  • The Character Sheet is back with more TTRPG and Fantasy news as we look at the first 3 episodes of The Wheel of Time season 2, and the massive departures the fantasy series makes from Robert Jordan's novels in these initial episodes. From completely dropped, major plot lines, to completely invented plotlines that put characters like Mat and Rand in massive plot holes for later events...we'll breakdown just where the show has veered away from The Wheel of Time novels...and what can be done to get it back on track, if anything!
So from scrapped plot thread, botched main storylines, and completely invented episodes, lets see just how far from the novels season 2 of The Wheel of time has strayed!

Good the first books are pretty mid. Also they were never gonna be a 1 to 1 adaption. Idk why anyone ever expected that. It’s wayyy to big to adapt anywhere close to 1 to 1.
I was hoping they would change more in season 1 tbh, and I’m glad they tried but their changes ended up being just as bad as the stuff in book 1. The ending of book 1 is ridiculous and pointless. The show got that theme right at least 😂 but season 2 has improved drastically and it’s so much better.
Better as in it’s becoming a good show, if you only want replication of the books then ya prob not for you.

It’s because season one was so bad. Season 2 was unquestionably a jump in quality and in storytelling. Not to mention the story is now further along, with season one being all about revealing the dragon in a very very slow pace which they actually tried mimicking the books in that regard but not on everything else. But in season 2 they embraced that they’ve lost that opportunity and went on to say “no its an adaptation and we will not be completely faithful, that ship has sailed, kind of ending of game of thrones “ and even already ordered a season 3

Idk why they’d abandon the original story. I know there are constraints, ie books being too long for a tv show with only 9ep a season however it’s a similar situation as the Witcher. They were handed a brick of gold and instead said “nah we can do better” and in the attempt to make diamonds they turned it into copper. In the process loosing part of the hard core fan base. Nonetheless it’s still awesome to see a live action remake of the books I grew up reading. I pray they don’t mess up the top tier books like “lord of chaos or knife of dreams.”
Also where tf did Rands hair go? He’s never had a shaved head wtf! 😢

The show is a different turning of the wheel than in the books they said in interviews. Egwyane is a god awful actress for that particular role. She is bankrupt of the inner strength and life experience to play such a character. Probably incredible at some high society person who has also never suffered in their life before. Lan is a god awful actor as well and is an abominable influence upon Rand, who copies his mega cringe narcissistic-controlled voice. Speak like a fucking person or learn to act.
Most of the other characters are good, though not one is impressive except for Matt (not the s2 one; his recast was really a dagger to the heart for s2.

There were many moments that felt like characters were being reworked, and the timeline and plot pulled apart. They were, but only in the service of the story. True, this doesn't quite line up with all the details of the books, but it gets the characters and the plot spot on (even if it doesn't feel like it for a moment in the middle).
When I read The Wheel of Time, I always hoped it would make it to screen, but was certain it wouldn't be possible. Too much of the original happens in thoughts and hopes and fears. That is why some parts had to be reworked. That's why Moiraine's arc skews so widely from the book. It had to, in order to do justice to the character and the thoughts and growth of mine and will that was the subject of half the book.
The efforts in this series are worthy of study to learn how to make a screen adaptation of a cerebral plot.
I've never been a fan before, but I'm now a loyal fan of this series. They are doing it right. Those who say otherwise probably can't see the forest for the trees. If they finish the book series they have a chance to outpace LOTR for the next generation, and become legend for decades.

I don't like certain aspects of the show, including some ham-handed "woke" stuff, but even though the plot isn't following the books very closely, season 2 has started to feel more like the world that Robert Jordan created and for that reason alone, I am still watching.
Also, looking at some of comment here, it seems like everyone thinks that they somehow know and have experience in how TV shows work. You (or I) may not like some (or many) of the choices being made, but I think that a degree of lenience should be made in regards to the process of setting up storylines that will pay off later and draw viewers into the world who would possibly be lost if a more straight-forward adaption were attempted.
(Of course, with that being said, the Lan storyline in season 2 and the warder-centric episode in season 1 were largely a waste of time and could have been used to fit more of the books into the show.)

Prob most of book 3, then I think we can fully expect to lose most if not all of books 7-10. Besides a few big points they will prob cut those for sure.
They have to cut ALOT. It’s literally impossible to do it all. Same with characters. It’s just not possible to avoid so it’s a matter of finding the ones you can merge with others, or cutting those who may be loved by everyone but in the end don’t really affect the major plot points or endings. Like Gaul for example, he’s my favorite Aeil, but you can cut him and it’s not going to change much at all.

I can live with cuts - adaptation from one medium (books) to another (tv) requires consolidation, streamlining, and reordering. When it's done well, like the LotR movies, you almost can't remember what was cut. However, Character is STORY. When you fundamentally change characters, relationships, and most crucially their motivations, you are no longer telling the same story. Now, whether this show is good or not is a separate question from whether it's a good adaptation of the books. But, they've clearly abandoned RJ's story in favor of telling whatever story they've decided to tell.

I’m a big fan of the books (reread various books over a dozen times over the years until the series culmination), I’ve respectfully refrained from criticizing the show, because the show runner spelled out his plan for better or worse prior to the series. Just two thoughts: 1) They’re not really pressed for time if they keep adding filler material in both seasons; 2) Episodes 3 & 4 of season 2 are what I’d hoped to see (nothing to do with plot), the wheel of time . Hopefully, it’ll continue and give the characters more purpose, regardless of their motivations

I understand what you mean but it is precisely because they are pressed for time that they have to add seemingly random plot. Because they have to compress two books in one season (plus deal with the split up of all characters from s1) they have to fuck around with the plot and make it make sense.

Makes me not want to watch it cause they completely just leave out very important parts character building and honestly I feel like they completely screwed up the casting. I mean not sure if it's just me but it's nothing like how I imagined it. This movie era of fantasy adaptations is so exciting.. but not so much for people like me who've read the books prior and loved the lore & story first (asoiaf
, lotr, wot etc.) I get why there's need to cut out and edit some parts.. but to add an entire new storyline.. that's going to be more tricky. If you are still expecting this to be super accurate the books you haven’t thought much about this adaption. It’s literally impossible to stay accurate to the books. 14 books 1000 words each 2000+ characters and you got 7-8 seasons of 8 episodes each.
You can’t tell a good story at all on screen if you don’t change a shit ton. Ya it’s sucks but if anyone was actually hoping for a 1 to 1 adaption I don’t know what to tell you. Give up on that and you’ll enjoy the show a lot more. The books will always be there.
If you value replication for adaptions only then prob stop watching cause it absolutely will not be that.
My guess is they will end up cutting most of books 7-10 almost entirely besides a few important things. Even more than that will have to be cut, it’s just literally impossible to do.
It’s so much more enjoyable after accepting this and just going along for the ride, seeing how and what they try to do to achieve the larger plot points, just with a different path to get there is becoming really fun. Get alot of good laughs at how stupid some of the things are but also blown away by some of the actors and season 2 improving immensely after that meh first season.
If you read all that I luv u. If you are still mad please just take some time and try to think about what it would require to be 100% loyal to the books. Cant be done. Will the changes they make be good ones tho? We will see 😂 some I love and some make me laugh.

Of course it was. They literally have said it all the time. It’s impossible to not turn away from the books to adapt a series this large. I very much disagree tho they have mostly done very close themes and messages. Just with different pathways to get there. Which they have to do , you can’t read the narration of the characters mind on screeen. So they have to do things a different way.
This show has repeatedly showed us it’s changing things and ppl still act surprised.
Stop hoping for replication of the books as that was never once in the cards and never will be.
Bad adaption can still be a great show. Although I’ve thought it’s been pretty accurate as an adaption as book 1 and book 2 are my least favorite. Book 1 is a pretty weak book, and the first season definitely followed that theme 😂 I’m very glad they have done all these changes for season 2 as the events in book 2 are boring and weird.
