Lets be honest, most people use email for password resets, viewing bills/invoices etc. Most company's couldn't care less about end to end encryption. Totally agree. Self hosting is the best option out there. Most of web hosting services offer a plug and play solution. It s not how hard that you can imagine.

There's a _huge_ difference between handing data over to a third party by default, versus someone knowing you self host, and having to actually gain access to your home network and hack into your email. For me there are actually just two - Tutanota and mailbox. One buck per month for the basic plan which is more than enough for most private usage cases and they don't sell to third parties which is the most important thing. Encryption is all good and fine but why would some person, organisation or state force encrypt mails if there are much more simple and efficient ways to get to the content of stuff written with a keyboard. It's much simpler to inject a key-logger and it even has extra value. Protonmails prices are outrages and their rhetoric simply is fear mongering and nonsense. If someone wants your data they'll get it if they know what they're doing. Also, the good thing with Tutanota and mailbox is that they're big but not too big. Most domain/aliases are still available. For some weird reasons proton lists that as an positive (as being reliable and not going bankrupt anytime soon) but it actually is more a burden than anything.

Actually, most of these don't use port 25. Proton, for example, uses a bridge to offer SMTP and IMAP functionality. The bridge encrypts everything on the computer before sending it to the proton servers on a unique port, and the proton servers will send encrypted email to the bridge local on your computer on a unique port...and the bridge decrytps and put it in the client through a common port locally.
