- The Washington Commanders are being sued by The Native American Guardians Association, which has been trying to get the Commanders to change the name back to Redskins.
The lawsuit states:
“The logo on the Redskin’s helmet is an actual person, it’s Chief White Calf. Every time they go out on that field, they were honoring Chief White Calf and they were battling on the football field with the same honor and integrity and courage. They should continue to honor that.”

Bring back The Washington Redskins !!!!! The Redskins Logo by far is one of the best in NFL history ..... remember guys like John Riggins , Joe Theisman and Doug Williams.
Who represented Indians better than John'The Diesel' Riggins! A Native American playing for the Skins! It was a Awesome site! Washington never should have given up their identify in the first place! Too much history and pride behind that name!
Correction. THE BEST.
As a chiefs fan , the redskins logo is the best in the nfl
I met a Family of American Indians from New Mexico at the Stadium before a Redskin game once. They were so proud of the team. To them it was a pilgrimage.
When the Boston Braves football team moved to Fenway Park, which was also the home of the Boston Red Sox, the Braves owner wanted a commercial tie-in with the Red Sox while retaining the Native American theme. An indigenous people of the region, the Algonquin, painted their skin with a red salve for beautification. They even referred to themselves as the "red skins" in their own language. So the Boston Braves football team became the Boston Redskins. The franchise, soon after, moved to Washington, D.C. as the Washington Redskins.
Thanks for the background info. Very helpful when I dug a little further into the history of the team and the term Redskin.
@@reginaldselby5074 Make sure you note that the name Washington Redskins was created by a racist George Preston Marshall 😎
My nation we call ourselves red people.
We want the Redskins. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!
I was a die hard Redskins fan my entire life, and i did my senior thesis on this exact debate. I went to Indian Reservations and asked many how they felt about time and whether or not they were offended by it and not only did they say that they love the name, but they said the only thing that they’re offended about is non-native Americans telling them what offends them. It means pride and honor to them, not skin. A native american came up with the logo for the Redskins. I have and will always have a empty feeling, no favorite NFL team, and disgust over this unless it is changed back. Let’s face it, politics did everything they possibly could to change the name as part of cancel culture…to act as if Native Americans don’t exist and the history of them never happened. since it took so long for them to rid of the name, it would take the on a miracle for the name to go back. It would mean the world to me if it did come back as the emblem is a symbol of my childhood, and watching games with my father and it’s what football is to me. If it did really truly offend, say 90% say if the polls were reversed, then despite my love for the emblem, I would agree that it does need to change however, they changed it for all the wrong reasons, and asked all the wrong people, and it was changed by all the wrong people.
You covered just about everything! Great post!
Never been a Washington fan at all. However I support them demanding the Redskins name back from the Woke fools. Good luck Redskin fans...Get er done!!
Define woke and the when the first usage of the term outside of meaning to wake up? If you do your research you would find that the use and meaning of the term is totally different than how you are using it.
Thank you Strong hands, we're fighting to get our team back but we need your help and everyone else's. So we can actually get back to football like everyone else is.

Raiders fan here , The Redskins had a top 3 Name and Helmet in the NFL
Agreed. I always felt the 'Skins and Raiders had the best helmets in the NFL.
I am a Native American and I am offended that the Redskins are no longer named that. I am so proud of my heritage and we just lost another representation of our Native American history. I am not offended by the Redskins name. I am offended that it was changed. It makes me feel as though we are not being recognized at all anymore.
I'm glad to hear your point of view!
Exactly! I have Native ancestry.. don't really look Native, but I have ancestry of a "redskin" tribe and I've never been more angry about a name change.
Honestly hope they change it back.
😆 😆 😆
The original redskins logo is an accurate depiction of what native Indians looked like. His skin is actually brown not red.
In my trump voice " they dont look like indians to me " 😆
I vote for redskins all day everyday!
GO REDSKINS
As a cowboys fan, bring back the history, bring back the tradition, bring back the washington redskins.
I’m a Washington fan, but it’s actually really cool that us fans can come together on this. Much respect.
The rivalry lives on in my heart! HTTR!
I honestly think they should go back to the Redskins that was by the best name
I agree
Should have left it alone. Washington Redskins
I think it is a pride to carry the name of the roots, I do not see it as an offense
We should have never changed the name. I always, and will always, see, and call, this team, the Skins. The Redskins. I love them. We all do. Snyder is gone, let us heal together! SKINS! :)
I appreciate the video! I'm a 3rd generation Washington fan. I've only missed a handful of games in the last 20 years and my family even buried my grandfather with his Redskins gear. I've always held the same opinion that NAGA is saying now. We love our team and would never have named them after something we disrespect. I was taught as a child about the Indian who designed the logo and I was always proud that the design wasn't cartoonish or offensive (like the Braves' mascot). I learned early on that our team held favor on many reservations and when the name change was forced, I felt like it was a way for modern Americans to alleviate their guilt about the past by erasing representations of American Indians from pop-culture. Now, I think there might be a way to reconcile the past and the present with this team. The name Redskins might never come back, but I'm happy that this side of the issue is finally coming to light. Thanks for the video!
What does the modern Indian feel guilty about? If anything, the Indian in general should want to be remembered for their struggle and being taken advantaged of for being a loving group of people! Being part Indian myself, I want America to always remember us and what we sacrificed years ago and we still stand strong! Taken away the name to me is erasing history that we all should be aware of!
Damn, getting buried in his redskin gear, that's tough 💪🟥🟨
Hail to the Redskins...get er done...great video thanks for sharing this
It’s not racist it was used and named redskins by a Indian tribe leader
I’d like to see the Cleveland Indians name return.
Bring back chief wahoo as well
Go Redskins
Always.
I appreciate you covering this. I would just politely point out that what you described is *not* the actual, original meaning of Redskins. “Redskins” is a warrior-class identifier created by Native Americans themselves. It is specific to red-painted native warriors renowned for their bravery, skill and fighting spirit. Redskins is derived from Native Americans’ use of the blood root plant and dye as ceremonial preparation for war. Redskin tribes used it to cover their shaven heads, arms, torsos, and legs. They believed this color would protect them like a spiritual suit of armor, and that they had made a connection with their war spirits who would guide them and provide strength and courage. Red symbolized energy and power. More in the replies...
During a certain period in history, the word "redskin" was hijacked and used pejoratively. But like many other formerly pejorative terms, it has long since been recovered and elevated to a term of respect, admiration, and reverence.
The name Redskins was chosen in 1933 to honor Native Americans in general, including a coach and four players on the team who were Native American. In 1971, Coach George Allen consulted with the Red Cloud Indian Fund on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation about logo design. It was a Native American, Blackie Wetzel, who persuaded then-owner Jack Kent Cooke to honor Native Americans with a logo based on the likeness of Blackfeet Chief John Two Guns White Calf.
To discard the Redskins name and imagery is to further eradicate any relic of Native American existence. It is a gross double-standard in relation to other groups who were allowed to elevate terms once derogatory to them; terms with pejorative origins, unlike the “Redskins” moniker and its hallowed, Native American roots.
The word "Yankee" has pejorative origins, but no longer.
The name United Negro College Fund is now accepted.
The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is accepted today.
The LGBTQ community have reclaimed the words "gay" and "queer." Their use is no longer derogatory.
The term "cowboys," which once comprised slaves that managed cattle, is now revered.
Why then do these groups have the right to elevate names originally derogatory to them, while the overwhelming majority sentiment of Native Americans cannot be respected - despite the Redskins name having positive roots and actually originating from Native Americans themselves - unlike the examples above?
And then there are nicknames like Fighting Irish, whose logo is a leprechaun with its fists raised. The Minnesota Vikings logo is a generic caricature of a Scandinavian, a false depiction of Vikings as they did not actually wear horned helmets. The Redskins logo, on the other hand, was meticulously selected and designed by actual Native Americans, to say nothing of changing the name of the franchise to a military rank partially responsible for carrying out the genocide of Native Americans.
Thanks for letting us know! We appreciate your feedback on this!
I AM A FAN IN MY HEART IN PROTECTING THE HISTORICAL NAME OF WASHINGTON REDSKINS. I JOIN YOU GUYS IN THIS FIGHT IN THE CHANGING OF THE NAME "COMMANDERS" BACK TO "REDSKINS"!!! That would be so epic and awesome
The irony of it all, the only reason it was changed was due not to skin portrayed as red but by skin that’s too thin.
I’m not a redskins fan but the nfl needs the Redskins. Bring them back
Yes please bring the Redskins back! ❤🎉
I enjoyed your video! . . I would like to offer a correction to what was mentioned as the earliest use of the term, Redskin. . . You may want to re-examine the history of this word. Redskin was not a term created by English settlers to be used as a racial slur. It was actually created by the Native Americans first as an identifying name to differentiate the native tribes from all others who were beginning to settle and colonize the Americas. First noted in the 1760's Canadian region between the French and the Native Americans who called THEMSELVES Redskins. The French then translated the Native American term into a French translation, then shortly after that an English translation was the name we now know as Redskin. It should be noted that "Redskin" was used for at least a half a century as a very respectful and dignified term by all sides untill greater conflicts between the Natives and the settlers heated up and animosity and prejudice perverted it's use into racial slurs. But even that missuse faded. By the time the Redskins Football team first appeared, any intent to use that term derogatorally towards the natives had greatly departed. . . So that being said, HECK YEAH!! BRING BACK THE REDSKINS!!!!
Thank you for the history! People that complained should appreciate the education and maybe you gave them a different insight of what they considered offensive! Being part Indian, you enlightened me!
@walterproctor4065 Thank you! Hope I could be of help if possible. I think many who complain may possibly be doing so out of some social political bias and not really by the historical facts. In fact, it seems to me that these historical facts may be purposely ignored by some in favor of social political bias. This current climate is pretty divided right now so who knows. . . Thanks for the reply!
What do you care about the team? (Oops, Sean T. Handle) nevermind. Just kidding, sir. I also remember reading a while back that the term "redskin " did not appear as a racial slur until the early 70s. I imagine that had more to do with the rising leftist cultural influences, and not an epidemic of anti-native American speech
Thanks for letting us know!
I still am a little bothered by the Redskins name - it's like calling a team from the South the "Blackskins". However, I don't think the Commanders was not the right choice. They should call them the Washington Warriors and bring back the Native American imagery. That way they can honor them while not using a derogatory term.
I am a traditionalist, go back to Redskins. Iconic uniforms.
It's not racism, it is recognition! Our Native American Warriors have always been celebrated as mighty men/women of valor from the mighty Sioux to the vicious and conquering Apache Indians who took down Custer and the 7th Calvary back in 1876.
Let's celebrate our Indian Native American Warriors again! We love them!
I’m a Bears fan, but I’ll say that those helmets where so great. And I also loved their maroon pants with the white and yellow stripes.
Can't disagree! It's a great uniform!
Bring back the Redskins!!

I think it is wonderful idea I been redskins fan since I was little guy now I 60 years old 🎉🎉🎉
Why fact is greater than theory? The Redskins name is in honor of the first HC of the franchise who is Native American.
Yes, bring it back. Commanders is a lame name, redskins has great history.

I Hope we get it Back before gameday
Go redskins. Not a fan of the team but loved the history and uniform images of the current redskins and their uniforms of the past. It was a tribute to the Native American people and showed the respect of the colonists to these proud people
The name never should have Ben changed to begin with
as a native .. and a real one . living on a rez.. i feel maybe the logo should not come back ,,, but the name with the old warrior logo,, but yes i feel it is ok for me .. NCAA still using our likeness in there teams
Why the logo is not offensive, in fact iconic, historic and beautiful.
Designed by a Native American. I’ve always said schools and pro teams don’t name their teams after things or people they don’t like. Its about the spirit of the bulldog or chief or Braves etc. look back when the old ncaa teams were first named and they give a description of the mascot and why they choose them.
@@showmemoblues that is your opinion though, but you are trying to tell a Native American how they should feel about the logo.
@@zman8340 Was they really or was they an Elizabeth Warren? Also, being Native American does not necessary mean they have the best interest of their particular tribe or Native Americans as a single group. Remember the USA had a Native American vice president and that did not work out at all.

I know, how about the Washington Redskins name and stop messing with the true fans and ruining football!!!
Redskins, most of us grew up in this Era. Don't think it's a racist term. For instance, cowboys are always portrayed as white, but historically, not all true.
Bring back the name Redskins it represents my heritage.
I'm not a Washington fan, but my take on it is that the 'Redskins' was one of the iconic names in the NFL. And I agree that to most people today, the term would mean the football team, not native Americans. I also don't really get how people considered the classic Redskins logo to be racist, when it is so similar to the logo of the Chicago Blackhawks which people seem to be fine with. I consider 'Commanders' to be an awful name, and in actual fact I've not come across anyone that suggested this name in the competition that the team held a couple of years ago to find a new name.
I grew up in the DC area, Fairfax, Virginia, and can tell you first hand the "Redskins" name was celebrated and cherished with nothing but the upmost respect for native Americans. For the most part when referring to our, then, beloved football team, we'd almost always use the term "Skins". i.e. "Where are you watching the "Skins" game or what time are the "Skins" on? My Elementary school, Westmore Elementary, had a Redskin night once a year where our principle, Mr. Freeman, had a player or 2 come in to play football and sign stuff. There was always a segment of the evening that discussed the history and pride of native Americans spoken by a Native American. It's always been about honor and pride. Changing the name because some Karen felt offended on Native Americans behalf is simply tragic. Hail to the Redskins! A side note, as if it matters, my Dad's Grandmother was 100% Cherokee Indian.
We need our Redskins back!!!
Look I’m tired of the name changes. As a fan I have purchased redskins, Washington football team & commanders gear. At this point I need to know where we stand lol I’m not buying another piece of gear until I get some finality.
It’s so stupid. If we were using the word in a derogatory way, we would sing “fuck the Redskins” instead of “Hail to the Redskins”
You notice how the fight song also had the words "Hail Victory". Just think about where else you hear that specific ordering of words. There arent many places, if any. Now think of where you have heard it historically. Maybe you cant think of any scenarios. Now, translate it into German. Oh wow! You get "Sieg Heil". In a song penned in the 1930s... There is a specific reason why you dont hear the phrase "Hail Victory" in modern times. Only an organization that turned a blind eye to racism kept that bs going.
@@cmike123 did you have to stretch to reach that far?
@@jakeflemming google Hail Victory. Tell me in what context it comes up. I'll wait.
@@cmike123bro people have victories in football games too

As of Indian myself and the Dallas Cowboy fan I want the Washington Redskins back now and I want them back but I also want to see the cowboys-redskins rivalry.
A little birdie told me that this time next season the Redskins name will be back and not only that the new ownership is working with the DC city council t knock down RFK and rebuild a re-tractable roof stadium to some day host a Super Bowl ! They will knock it down, make a bunch more parking and still be able to bus everyone in by Metro like they use to be back in the day. The stadium will only have around 60K seating to keep everyone close and sell out every game played at home. The issue with Landover now is they cut down on a lot of seating because they couldn’t sell out any games unless Dallas came to town and even then there were more Dallas fans showing up than Commander fans..SMH, coming from Md im a Huge Steelers fan since the 70’s but i love my Redskins as well being a home town team! HTTR
If you know anything about D.C.'s mayor and city council, you would know that it's impossible for the team to have a new stadium in the District AND also be called the Redskins. Sad but true.
I grew up neighbors to two Native American Reservations. They are very concerned that the elimination of things that denote their heritage is essentially ERASING their history from all. They'd prefer the mascot use of "Redskins", and they aren't "woke".
I've been a Resk8ns fan since the 70s and I love the name and everything else with it 7:45

Bring back our old colors and logo and call us the “Washington Warriors” if we can’t get Redskins back.
I never stopped calling them the Redskins.
Redskins needs to come back
Im a die hard cowboy fan. I think Washington has the BEST DAMN HELMETS IN THE NFL. THERE MASCOT IS COOL AND AWESOME AND REDSKINS IS A GREAT NAME. IF I WAS NATIVE AMERICAN I WOULD PROUD OF THEM. GREAT FOOTBALL TEAM . BRING THE REDSKINS NAME BACK...
Bring it back!! They were always the Redskins to me, and I never thought of that word to stand for anything other than the name of a football team. The only thing I ever wanted them to change was to get rid of the yellow color from their unis and change it to more of an old gold color. The WFT and Commanders names suck, I'm glad to hear that there is an effort by Native Americans to get the Redskins name reinstated.
Space Commanders? The hell? I mean that’d fit Houston better than Washington. Houston’s teams are all space related except for the Texans
Space Commanders is not being pushed by the team. The video got that wrong. Space Commanders and Wolf Commanders is being pushed by a trademark squatter named Philip Martin McCauley, who has pulled this kinda thing previously.
Great content! Educational, sensitive, and respectful. Well done, bro. Football transcends racism. There’s no room for it and it should not ever be allowed to poison or tarnish this great game. Athletes/people should never be ranked or judged by the color of their skin. It’s the team’s responsibility to put the best athletes in positions of advantage to help their teams succeed and ultimately win as often as possible. As a former D1 athlete who spent years building relationships and developing chemistry with a variety of different teammates from from all walks of life I can honestly say if there was EVER a microscopic chance of that nonsense happening in our building it wasn’t tolerated. It would’ve been eliminated swiftly and effectively. I sincerely don’t believe the Washington Redskins ever intended their team name to be hurtful, racist, or disrespectful towards native Americans. It was to honor them, embrace their warrior spirit, and to keep their legacy alive. For them to cancel that gift all to appease others and their feelings seems cowardly and foolish. That is NOT the warrior way. It’s truly a shame to see negative influence like this ruin and distract from the actual meaning so much that the team would bend the knee to pressure from others who don’t understand or ultimately care enough to find out for themselves.
My Stepmom is full blooded Navajo. She had her jersey and helmet that she would wear every game day. Now she has a Redskins Hog stuffed animal that she brings with her everywhere. She was so disappointed by the name change.
I have been a Redskins fan since I was a kid I’m 51 now so you know what I think. But I can’t believe the Camanders is the best name they could come up with sounds like a hockey team to me. I suggested the Washington Warriors and there helmets be a spear with feathers on it.
There is no other name for this team but REDSKINS! Snowflakes need to go away.
I surely hope so, name should have never been changed.
Washington Redskins
My family is from Santee South Carolina. And we're one of the oldest tribes in this country that's not recognized by the government. But never the less we exist. And the name " Red-Skin" has such a different meaning then what has been added to Webster's dictionary it's ashame. Truth be told, it's a honor, not a disrespectful word to those who know. The people who were so-called offended were bought and paid for by some who had a bigger agenda. I signed the petition, and I hope the true and beautiful name Redskins returns back to our fans and the original people of this sacred land.
I know this may sound stupid to some, but it may depend on the next election. The tide has to turn !
I knew the man that designed the logo for the Redskins and his family so lets change the name back. Do it for Walter and his son Don.
Bring back the Redskins Uniforms and Helmets just change the name from commanders to the Seminoles and the Commanders have the ugliest uniforms in NFL history look like something from the XFL
Never understood why they didnot just change the name to Warriors and be done with it. No uniform or logo change would have been needed.
I am 25% native American and that's why in 1981 I chose them to be my team. I have never understood the problem with the name cause the cowboy name was originally a group of murderers before it connected to modern day people and no one complained about that.
The “Washington football team” and “commanders” are symbolic of four nightmare years that we need to see behind us forever.
As a lifelong niner fan, if this comes to fruition, I’ll stand and shout HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!
Bring back the skins damit!!
As a Saponi Indian mixed with Chickahaminy. I am proud to be a Redskins fan all day. Coming from the 804
This is the situation that those cancel culture smooth brains will get you into. People just talk before even doing any type of research and its most annoying when its not even the people its supposedly offending that speak out on things which imo is more disrespectful because youre taking away the voice of those people that should be the ones were listening to and this is for many different situations not just the Redskins situation. But im just a nobody with a random 2 cent opinion lol. This video was a good video and i agree with the points you made. Bring back the og Redskins but lets ask the natives first what they think or what they would like because i know that no matter what they come up with will be 10x better than those 2 dumbass proposals the team has to offer for potential names 😂!!!
Bring back the Redskins! The true Football fans and people who love Native American culture want it back! Let's ignore the people offended by everything.
The name wasn't there as an offensive slang. The name & logo was the meaning of pride and representation of the native Indians
You mentioned the Native American Guardians Association and this is where the focus should be ... on the term "Redskins" and the fact that this term had a rich history with all Native American Tribes long before it was ever used as a name for a football team !! Native Americans used this term for their most valued honored warriors, who fought to protect their tribes. The examples of Native Americans with their faces painted specifically red, overwhelming exist in all Native American Tribes throughout American history ...
That's interesting to know! Thanks for sharing
Redskins
I've never understood why people think you'd name YOUR team a name you think is an insult. You name yourself something you can be proud of.
Is the guy actually explaining that we’re not at war with the Indians any more,oh my god😮
It was all a bunch of time and money wasted to start with . The Redskins are both the history of both the NFL and United States not a fan of the Redskins but come on man!
The cancel culture is erasing history and damaging the people it purports to represent. The removal of Native American imagery from media and products removes the culture and history of Native Americans from the mainstream. Example, Land O Lakes butter removing the maiden from their packaging suppresses the reminder of these great people. An image that was paint by renowned Native America artist was removed from the package. Seeing the image reminded anyone who saw it that the Native Americans were part of our history. A constant reminder. If you remove all Native American images from society bc they may be offensive to some then you remove the reminder of a culture and people. They will be erased and forgotten.
I like the Redskins logo, but I can see why people do not like the name. Personally hoping they bring back the logo and change the name to Redhawks or Redwolves
The logo was badass. I don't see how anyone was genuinely annoyed by it. Then again, so much in Thee Current Year flummoxes me.
I am a Australian who as a kid pick up a hat as like the logo.
I think and believe they should go back to the Washington Redskins.
The team won't go back to the Redskins it's just another distraction the team doesn't need. The Commanders is the here to stay. The same way the Guardians aren't going back to the Indians. Fans need to move on and focus on actually winning.
They actually said they are moving on from Commander's.
No, the team has not. This presenter, Steve Adams, got that part totally wrong. A trademark squatter named Philip Martin McCauley registered Space Commanders and Wolf Commanders, and is trying to get the team to buy them from him.
Yes they have. The term Commander is is already trademarked by the NCAA. Know your stuff and the NFL lost in court.
Washington Warriors with the native imagery.
That could be good for them!
Cowboys fan here. Washington Natives is a nice, neutral name that honors the legacy of American Indians without using a term that could be considered offensive.
Don't think they are going to change the name back? That ship done sailed as I heard! Well I say bring that ship back to the dock!!! Like this guy's commentary.
I am part Native American The Cleveland guardians are one of my worst enemies because the name "guardians" is very offensive to Native Americans and a racial slur but I do not care about commanders i hope that they changed their name back to the Redskins.
What you're saying is that the term acquired a secondary meaning relating solely to the sports team and not to be taken literally.
I'm a loyal Redskins and it needs to be back as there original name
