  • The Washington Commanders are being sued by The Native American Guardians Association, which has been trying to get the Commanders to change the name back to Redskins.
    The lawsuit states:
    “The logo on the Redskin’s helmet is an actual person, it’s Chief White Calf. Every time they go out on that field, they were honoring Chief White Calf and they were battling on the football field with the same honor and integrity and courage. They should continue to honor that.”

    When the Boston Braves football team moved to Fenway Park, which was also the home of the Boston Red Sox, the Braves owner wanted a commercial tie-in with the Red Sox while retaining the Native American theme. An indigenous people of the region, the Algonquin, painted their skin with a red salve for beautification. They even referred to themselves as the "red skins" in their own language. So the Boston Braves football team became the Boston Redskins. The franchise, soon after, moved to Washington, D.C. as the Washington Redskins.

    I was a die hard Redskins fan my entire life, and i did my senior thesis on this exact debate. I went to Indian Reservations and asked many how they felt about time and whether or not they were offended by it and not only did they say that they love the name, but they said the only thing that they’re offended about is non-native Americans telling them what offends them. It means pride and honor to them, not skin. A native american came up with the logo for the Redskins. I have and will always have a empty feeling, no favorite NFL team, and disgust over this unless it is changed back. Let’s face it, politics did everything they possibly could to change the name as part of cancel culture…to act as if Native Americans don’t exist and the history of them never happened. since it took so long for them to rid of the name, it would take the on a miracle for the name to go back. It would mean the world to me if it did come back as the emblem is a symbol of my childhood, and watching games with my father and it’s what football is to me. If it did really truly offend, say 90% say if the polls were reversed, then despite my love for the emblem, I would agree that it does need to change however, they changed it for all the wrong reasons, and asked all the wrong people, and it was changed by all the wrong people.

    I appreciate the video! I'm a 3rd generation Washington fan. I've only missed a handful of games in the last 20 years and my family even buried my grandfather with his Redskins gear. I've always held the same opinion that NAGA is saying now. We love our team and would never have named them after something we disrespect. I was taught as a child about the Indian who designed the logo and I was always proud that the design wasn't cartoonish or offensive (like the Braves' mascot). I learned early on that our team held favor on many reservations and when the name change was forced, I felt like it was a way for modern Americans to alleviate their guilt about the past by erasing representations of American Indians from pop-culture. Now, I think there might be a way to reconcile the past and the present with this team. The name Redskins might never come back, but I'm happy that this side of the issue is finally coming to light. Thanks for the video!

    • @walterproctor4065
      @walterproctor4065 Год назад +3

      What does the modern Indian feel guilty about? If anything, the Indian in general should want to be remembered for their struggle and being taken advantaged of for being a loving group of people! Being part Indian myself, I want America to always remember us and what we sacrificed years ago and we still stand strong! Taken away the name to me is erasing history that we all should be aware of!

    I appreciate you covering this. I would just politely point out that what you described is *not* the actual, original meaning of Redskins. “Redskins” is a warrior-class identifier created by Native Americans themselves. It is specific to red-painted native warriors renowned for their bravery, skill and fighting spirit. Redskins is derived from Native Americans’ use of the blood root plant and dye as ceremonial preparation for war. Redskin tribes used it to cover their shaven heads, arms, torsos, and legs. They believed this color would protect them like a spiritual suit of armor, and that they had made a connection with their war spirits who would guide them and provide strength and courage. Red symbolized energy and power. More in the replies...

    • @pharaohosam
      @pharaohosam Год назад +5

      During a certain period in history, the word "redskin" was hijacked and used pejoratively. But like many other formerly pejorative terms, it has long since been recovered and elevated to a term of respect, admiration, and reverence.
      The name Redskins was chosen in 1933 to honor Native Americans in general, including a coach and four players on the team who were Native American. In 1971, Coach George Allen consulted with the Red Cloud Indian Fund on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation about logo design. It was a Native American, Blackie Wetzel, who persuaded then-owner Jack Kent Cooke to honor Native Americans with a logo based on the likeness of Blackfeet Chief John Two Guns White Calf.

    • @pharaohosam
      @pharaohosam Год назад +4

      To discard the Redskins name and imagery is to further eradicate any relic of Native American existence. It is a gross double-standard in relation to other groups who were allowed to elevate terms once derogatory to them; terms with pejorative origins, unlike the “Redskins” moniker and its hallowed, Native American roots.
      The word "Yankee" has pejorative origins, but no longer.
      The name United Negro College Fund is now accepted.
      The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is accepted today.
      The LGBTQ community have reclaimed the words "gay" and "queer." Their use is no longer derogatory.
      The term "cowboys," which once comprised slaves that managed cattle, is now revered.

    • @pharaohosam
      @pharaohosam Год назад +6

      Why then do these groups have the right to elevate names originally derogatory to them, while the overwhelming majority sentiment of Native Americans cannot be respected - despite the Redskins name having positive roots and actually originating from Native Americans themselves - unlike the examples above?
      And then there are nicknames like Fighting Irish, whose logo is a leprechaun with its fists raised. The Minnesota Vikings logo is a generic caricature of a Scandinavian, a false depiction of Vikings as they did not actually wear horned helmets. The Redskins logo, on the other hand, was meticulously selected and designed by actual Native Americans, to say nothing of changing the name of the franchise to a military rank partially responsible for carrying out the genocide of Native Americans.

    I enjoyed your video! . . I would like to offer a correction to what was mentioned as the earliest use of the term, Redskin. . . You may want to re-examine the history of this word. Redskin was not a term created by English settlers to be used as a racial slur. It was actually created by the Native Americans first as an identifying name to differentiate the native tribes from all others who were beginning to settle and colonize the Americas. First noted in the 1760's Canadian region between the French and the Native Americans who called THEMSELVES Redskins. The French then translated the Native American term into a French translation, then shortly after that an English translation was the name we now know as Redskin. It should be noted that "Redskin" was used for at least a half a century as a very respectful and dignified term by all sides untill greater conflicts between the Natives and the settlers heated up and animosity and prejudice perverted it's use into racial slurs. But even that missuse faded. By the time the Redskins Football team first appeared, any intent to use that term derogatorally towards the natives had greatly departed. . . So that being said, HECK YEAH!! BRING BACK THE REDSKINS!!!!

And I agree that to most people today, the term would mean the football team, not native Americans. I also don't really get how people considered the classic Redskins logo to be racist, when it is so similar to the logo of the Chicago Blackhawks which people seem to be fine with. I consider 'Commanders' to be an awful name, and in actual fact I've not come across anyone that suggested this name in the competition that the team held a couple of years ago to find a new name.

  • @robtech341

    I grew up in the DC area, Fairfax, Virginia, and can tell you first hand the "Redskins" name was celebrated and cherished with nothing but the upmost respect for native Americans. For the most part when referring to our, then, beloved football team, we'd almost always use the term "Skins". i.e. "Where are you watching the "Skins" game or what time are the "Skins" on? My Elementary school, Westmore Elementary, had a Redskin night once a year where our principle, Mr. Freeman, had a player or 2 come in to play football and sign stuff. There was always a segment of the evening that discussed the history and pride of native Americans spoken by a Native American. It's always been about honor and pride. Changing the name because some Karen felt offended on Native Americans behalf is simply tragic. Hail to the Redskins! A side note, as if it matters, my Dad's Grandmother was 100% Cherokee Indian.

      You notice how the fight song also had the words "Hail Victory". Just think about where else you hear that specific ordering of words. There arent many places, if any. Now think of where you have heard it historically. Maybe you cant think of any scenarios. Now, translate it into German. Oh wow! You get "Sieg Heil". In a song penned in the 1930s... There is a specific reason why you dont hear the phrase "Hail Victory" in modern times. Only an organization that turned a blind eye to racism kept that bs going.

    A little birdie told me that this time next season the Redskins name will be back and not only that the new ownership is working with the DC city council t knock down RFK and rebuild a re-tractable roof stadium to some day host a Super Bowl ! They will knock it down, make a bunch more parking and still be able to bus everyone in by Metro like they use to be back in the day. The stadium will only have around 60K seating to keep everyone close and sell out every game played at home. The issue with Landover now is they cut down on a lot of seating because they couldn’t sell out any games unless Dallas came to town and even then there were more Dallas fans showing up than Commander fans..SMH, coming from Md im a Huge Steelers fan since the 70’s but i love my Redskins as well being a home town team! The only thing I ever wanted them to change was to get rid of the yellow color from their unis and change it to more of an old gold color. The WFT and Commanders names suck, I'm glad to hear that there is an effort by Native Americans to get the Redskins name reinstated.

    Great content! Educational, sensitive, and respectful. Well done, bro. Football transcends racism. There’s no room for it and it should not ever be allowed to poison or tarnish this great game. Athletes/people should never be ranked or judged by the color of their skin. It’s the team’s responsibility to put the best athletes in positions of advantage to help their teams succeed and ultimately win as often as possible. As a former D1 athlete who spent years building relationships and developing chemistry with a variety of different teammates from from all walks of life I can honestly say if there was EVER a microscopic chance of that nonsense happening in our building it wasn’t tolerated. It would’ve been eliminated swiftly and effectively. I sincerely don’t believe the Washington Redskins ever intended their team name to be hurtful, racist, or disrespectful towards native Americans. It was to honor them, embrace their warrior spirit, and to keep their legacy alive. For them to cancel that gift all to appease others and their feelings seems cowardly and foolish. That is NOT the warrior way. It’s truly a shame to see negative influence like this ruin and distract from the actual meaning so much that the team would bend the knee to pressure from others who don’t understand or ultimately care enough to find out for themselves.

And the name " Red-Skin" has such a different meaning then what has been added to Webster's dictionary it's ashame. Truth be told, it's a honor, not a disrespectful word to those who know. The people who were so-called offended were bought and paid for by some who had a bigger agenda. I signed the petition, and I hope the true and beautiful name Redskins returns back to our fans and the original people of this sacred land.

People just talk before even doing any type of research and its most annoying when its not even the people its supposedly offending that speak out on things which imo is more disrespectful because youre taking away the voice of those people that should be the ones were listening to and this is for many different situations not just the Redskins situation. But im just a nobody with a random 2 cent opinion lol. This video was a good video and i agree with the points you made. You mentioned the Native American Guardians Association and this is where the focus should be ... on the term "Redskins" and the fact that this term had a rich history with all Native American Tribes long before it was ever used as a name for a football team !! Native Americans used this term for their most valued honored warriors, who fought to protect their tribes. The examples of Native Americans with their faces painted specifically red, overwhelming exist in all Native American Tribes throughout American history ...

    The cancel culture is erasing history and damaging the people it purports to represent. The removal of Native American imagery from media and products removes the culture and history of Native Americans from the mainstream. Example, Land O Lakes butter removing the maiden from their packaging suppresses the reminder of these great people. An image that was paint by renowned Native America artist was removed from the package. Seeing the image reminded anyone who saw it that the Native Americans were part of our history. A constant reminder. If you remove all Native American images from society bc they may be offensive to some then you remove the reminder of a culture and people. They will be erased and forgotten.
