Always liked Sonny's style. Once saw him (on TV) walk up to center, look around, bend over and back peddle...as though the ball magically appeared in his hands, step up into the pocket, duck under two defensive lineman's arms, and throw a rifle shot to his receiver. It was a beautiful thing to watch.
Sonny is the best. He made the Skins worth watching even when they lost. My late father went to every single game for 40 years and he was a hugh Sonny fan.
My dad also. He said Sonny was the best, after Sammy Baugh, another redskin. Wish he could have met his idol.
I gave up after last season on my Dallas Cowboys. I have been with them since their first season. The Cowboy's first season was with ex Redskin QB Sammy Baugh. But after so many years I can't stand Jerry Jones any more. He makes my skin crawl. I hate everything about him and his repulsive family.
So, in memory of the Cowboys/Redskin history with Jurgenson and others, plus Dan Quinn now the Head Coach, a brand new Washington team, a new owner and a real team GM, Peters, unlike the Cowboys, I have become a Redskins fan. Smart Cowboy players came with Quinn and more will follow. In the meantime GM Peters and Quinn had a great draft. More have signed in free agency and pruning the team. I'm looking forward to the first 2024 game of Redskins vs. Commanders and hoping Cowboys get their asses whipped. If not the first game then soon. There's a new team of great previous history and a new powerhouse coming. 😊

I went to my first Washington game at RFK in 1962 and fell in love. I hate the arc of his career but love the man and the player.

My favorite player as a youngster...I wore his number in high school...respected Kilmer and quarterbacks like Jim Hart and James Harris.
I almost cried when he told that story of being in the press box by himself during Super Bowl . Thats messed up

He was a very exciting quarterback to watch, and just plain likable. Some people are winners all the way, and he was one of them.
Sonny had a ROCKET for an arm...what a great passer!!! Played for the Eagles from 1957 to 1963. Won the NFL title with the Eagles in 1960...(Lombardi's only title loss). Then played for Washington from 1964 to 1974. I remember watching him on CBS in 1968... he threw a 99 yard TD pass to Jerry Allen. Went to the HOF fame in 1983. Sonny was called the best "pure passer" of his time!!!

Redskins because he had sonny at QB.😮 Lombardi had plans for the team before he got Cancer.
Watching Sonny and his whole pro career was a joy. He made our team and fans feel like they were always in the game no matter the score. Such confidence, style and skill, that was Sonny...a winner no matter what... Never seen anyone like him...
I had the good fortune of growing up in Northern Va when Sonny came to town. And then when Lombardi came to town. The Skins got instant credibility and the next two decades or so were a hell of a good time to be a football fan in DC. Loved every minute of it. ESPECIALLY his 2-minute drills. Later after he retired you'd wander into this bar or that bar and there would be Sonny, Len Haus, Bill Brundige, maybe Billy. No one bothered them other to say Hi. It was great. He was great. May he live forever
I will never forgive George Allen for what he did to our beloved redskins and Sonny. Never. If only he was alive today, so I could tell him off. I hope he's rolling in his grave. We did a great job holding the dolphins to within 1 touchdown. We might have won if Sonny had been allowed to help coach. We definitely would have won if he had been healthy and played, ESPECIALLY with Lombardi coaching.
I am named Christian after Christian "Sonny" Jurgenson...I named the only dog I ever owned as an adult, Sonny...won't ever be the same watching the Redskins on TV but with the volume on mute and Sonny, Sam and Frank say "Touchdown!! Washington Redskins!!" My late grandmother asked me to bring her radio in to her hospital room to listen to Sonny, Sam and Frank...she passed in 2000 and her last game she listened to the Redskins sadly losing to those Dallas Cowboys..but she told me her most favorite of all was when the Redskins beat those Cowboys in 1982 in the NFC Championship Game and go on to watch John "The Diesel" Riggins score that go-ahead TD against the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17
Yep, 10 years later, revenge. Wish Sonny had a Superbowl ring. He deserves it.
I loved Sonny as a player, even as a lifelong Giants fan. I vividly remember the Redskins beating the Giants 72-41 in 1966 with Sonny as the QB. Sad times for us Giants fans. That was after YA Tittle and before Fran Tarkenton.
Many times, and I loved his never - say - die attitude.

I watched him play. He kneeled in the huddle and his huddles were long. He was speaking to each teammate and instructing them, teaching them. He would walk up to the line with his hands on his hips. Audibles were common. His passes were thrown with great accuracy and were catchable. They looked like perfect spirals. When he came into the game, no matter the score, we knew the master was in control.
I once caught a pass from Sonny as an 11 year old kid. Albeit it was a mini autographed plastic football on a Saturday morning at Lustine Chevrolet in Hyattsville, MD. My Dad said he and Kilmer both looked hungover. And I can confirm it was a tight spiral!

When the NFL first started having the officials review close calls on the field by watching replays, Sonny was on the radio broadcast with Herzog and Huff. When the official went under the hood to watch the replay of a questionable play, Sonny said, “The official is down there looking at dirty pictures.”
When me and my buddies would get together and watch the Skins, we would turn down the volume on the TV and tune into WMAL radio with Frank Herzog, Sam Huff, and Sonny Jurgensen with play-by-play and colorful commentary.

There is absolutely no question he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Any doubts of that are foolish.
When I was a kid I loved George Allen but having learned how he treated Sonny, Allen has lost a lot of luster in my eyes. Had Allen let Sonny be Sonny and Allen had taken care of the Defense they would have won Super Bowls together.
A young lady I worked with told me Sonny was bad about calling the house, asking for her sister. One time her father intercepted the call and told him, “I thought you were married!”
~~ saw Sonny play in 1969 with Lombardi coaching - at the newly re-named RFK stadium - he was one of the best pure passers ever - his very fast release helped him avoid many sacks - much like Dan Marino - felt so bad for Sonny when he could not play in Super Bowl 7 due to injury - even coach Shula said it would have been a better game had Jurgensen played ..

Redskin fan from age 6, my brother and I had season tickets in 1967(6 games only - couldn't get Colts game tickets, $84 for them...$6 a game), 10 years old, row 12 behind the Redskins bench, everyone stood up to see the game and I had to look between everyone to see.
Pat Richter used to practice punts behind the bench. The days of DC Stadium.
We would have beat The Dolphins in the Super Bowl had Sonny played....AND had he been on the sideline.
George deserved to lose that game, The Redskins did not.
Interesting how Lombardi confronted him at the first meeting. He had practice with Hornung and McGee with the Packers, and even though a devout Catholic, seemed to get along and somewhat admire his polar opposites.

QBs back then were their own coaches. They called their own plays.
I was a Sonny man along with my Dad and Brother! Only QB his balls were perfect spirals and they turned into the receivers. Miami had a perfect season because he tore his achilles. But we were even more lucky spoiled to have him broadcast all the games for all the Superbowls season and share his awesome knowledge of the game.
Possibly the best arm ever in the NFL. The only ones that could compete would be Marino or possibly Aaron Rodgers. I’m not a packers or dolphins fan and I hate the redskins. Love the cowboys

I remember as a kid watching Sonny play on TV. I saw pass after pass being completed by a guy I never heard of, with kind of a different arm motion, and the physique of an accountant. They lost, but it wasn’t his fault. George Allen didn’t like bravado and flash, Sonny was the epitome of that. Almost looked like he tried to pick on the best, just to show he could best em.
As a Dolphinns fan, and an old one who was around as a young teen boy when they went undefeated, I got to watch Jurgensen play and specifically remember the '74 game when we only lost 3 games, and I agree with Shula that the SB would have been tougher with him starting rather than Kilmer....the redskins never scored an offensive point in that game with Kilmer at QB against our top rated defense.
If Jurgensen plays in Super Bowl VII, I think the game goes either way
@@1983jblack Highly unlikely...The '72 Dolphins had the top offense in the league that year (Most points scored) and the top defense (least points allowed). the skins were lucky the scre was only 14-7. Without Brisco's foolish offsides (The Warfield TD that was called back) and the crazy FG turned touchdown return for the Redskins, the score should have been 21-0. The Skins were completely outplayed.
09:01 - "The only thing I ask of you is to be yourself." At that late stage of his life, coach Lombardi knew not to try to fix what wasn't broke. And when Sonny says: "I *finally* had a coach," one can tell he really means it. Lombardi was wise enough to know how to bring out the best in Sonny. George Allen wasn't, because he was so egotistical he wanted to mold every player's personality to suit his own. That's what separates good coaches from great ones.

Wish I did. I was born in 1966. I understand he should have been starting QB in Redskins first SB. Probably could have made a difference against Miami top notch team.

I saw Jurgensen play in 1961 when I had season tickets to THE EAGLES. Norm Van Brocklin had retired in '60 and Sonny Jurgensen took over. Sonny had great chemistry with Tommy MacDonald, just like Dutch did, and the Eagles had a great season. Then it came crashing down. There was a scandal which shall go unexplained. I know what I was told happened, but I don't want to slander anyone's memory. They had to get Jurgensen out of town. Jurgensen was shuffled off to the Redskins and the Eagles received Norm Snead in exchange, I think. What a disaster. The Jurgensen trade marked the beginning of two decades of futility by the Eagles. So yeah, I saw Jurgensen play.
@8:50 I remember watching the 'Skins and Jurgenson put up points and lose. They were on our local cbs station, was glad when nbc started televising the AFL, and another local cbs affiliate staring showing the falcons. Sonny was a great passer

He made the Eagles pay for trading him for Norm Snead. Jurgensen consistently beat them every season he played against and went 13-3 against the Eagles. Snead led the league in interceptions twice in Philadelphia and went 9-26-2 as a starter. Smart move Philadelphia
There was discussion that said the Philly police were instrumental in that "trade". They wanted him gone.
The "Barrel", no one threw it quicker.
I was at that comeback against the Dolphins in his final season. Cool game.

I only saw Sonny play at the end of his career.... Due to injuries, and George Allen hating the fact Sonny was a passer, not a guy handing off the ball 30 times.... Nothing against Billy Kiilmer.... I respect the fact both hated Allen ... Because even Billy realized Allen was playing them against each other.... Both guys would talk to each other over drinks, about the bullshit Allen was doing.... Trying to play one against the other....
