    I'm actually starting to grow pecan trees and I got the idea after finding a few in my garden from soil I got from my father. Didnt know what they were. Did some research. Now I want to have a farm. Trees were my childhood here in texas so I'm going to continue for my kids and the rest of my family!

      Hello Kaci, thanks for watching. Really appreciate it. We planted them for the same reason, part of my childhood and I wanted a legacy for the future. Good luck

    Man seems like a lot of work! I threw my pecans into my compost pile and forgot about em. A few months later I had roots a few feet long. Transplanted them into pots and now little trees are coming through

      what did you do with those long roots ????? that is the tap root needs to grow straight down that what supports the tree

    I have successfully grown pecans from nuts, but I noticed pecan saplings are super sensitive to Texas sun. What schedule of sun time should we use to get them adjusted and adapted to the sun so their leaves don’t turn brown?

    just a tip for anyone wanting to root pecans (seeds) it takes about 10/12 weeks in the damp soil for some to sprout i had about given up but here the come little sprouts pop out of the soil they are about 12 ins tall now 4-2-20 two and three leaves so dont give up just use plain top soil.

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  4 года назад

      David Leal - thanks for watching. You can. The old days they would place 3-5 pecans in a hole and see what happened. Sometimes zero, sometimes 1-2. The method we are using is based off the guidelines of OSU. In our approach, you will have nice strong container grown trees all uniform in size. (Hopefully). Haha.

    i just rooted PECAN IN ABOUT 30 DAYS no fridgeration i nicked the tip of the pecan with a blade then placed the pecan in a small tube about 8 inchs high 2 in dia filled with top soil wet it good just cover the nut with some soil wet it several times out come a fat white root changed to a larger container now i green shoot is showing this is in an unheated garage my first pecan to root. i forgot to mention i soaked the nut several days to soften it you can see the shell start to crack the i put it in soil

    You're smart to plan ahead like that. I've considered doing the same but running this operation alone gets pretty overwhelming at times. I leave so many unharvested that they germinate on their own. I've considered digging them up, potting them then selling them when they got a couple feet tall. For now, and the last ten years, I have just been mowing them. At times I wonder how many millions of dollars I have mowed lol.

  • @JennifertxCarnivore

    I didn’t have to put my acorn seeds in the refrigerator. They started growing after I soaked for 24 hours in water. They started growing in Dec. I am repotting them but how do we get them adapted to our Texas sun? Even in late winter the Texas sun makes them cook. How do we get them adapted to the sun?

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks, I’d keep them in shade with limited sun exposure or just morning sun.

    • @JennifertxCarnivore
      @JennifertxCarnivore 6 месяцев назад

      @@HeritageFarmsTexas later on when I want to plant them on property how do we do that? Only plant in shady areas? How long will it be until they are tolerant to the sun? Pecan orchards are out in the open. So confusing as to what age pecan saplings can begin to be conditioned for full Texas sun. Thank you for replying back. ☺️

    I recently started following your channel and i am interested in growing pecan trees. I had ordered a pecan tree (bareroot) and a few weeks ago i had to cut part of it down as it was dead and sprouts came out. I am wondering if i can grow it out and maybe use the pecan nuts to use for the rootstock. (Btw I had to cut below the graft). I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance

    QUESTION? We have at least 30 native pecan trees, most are very large trees, I am not sure about the number of trees. They usually make a lot of small pecans. Some years more than others. Do the small pecans have any value? We do use some of them ourselves and they taste great. And if we started managing the trees like spray them and water and whatever else they need will the pecans get larger? Thanks

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  4 года назад

      Hello, They sound like native pecan trees. The pecans should taste just fine, but they will not get bigger. You might produce more, but the size will not change. Guessing the shell is pretty thick on them also. Positive note, they’re very durable, drought resistant. Cold hardy. That’s why the nurseries graft improved varities to native root stocks. All of my trees were grafted to native root stock.

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  4 года назад

      You should enjoy them. Taste great, just smaller and may take more work to shell

    the bad part about going with seeds is about 10 years to fruiting on the pecan tree and you still dont know what you what you will get the dna is not in the nut its in the tree so the quickest way i think will be with air layering a limb if it roots you have a 2 yr old tree instaid of a sprout. hope this helps some one

    if you have 8 acres of pecan trees would it not quicker to use the air layering method { in 90 days or less you can have 3 ft rooted plant) of excact copy with seed you dont know what you end up with the dna is in the tree not the seeds good luck
