The lyrics have been cleaned up beyond all recognition, but Raul was still sexy as anything.
I saw Raul Julia on Broadway many times and he was the most charismatic and brilliant actor I have ever seen. I wish they would make the film available on DVD. RIP
He was the greatest & sexiest man on celluloid or stage. Saw him in WHERE'S CHARLEY? at Circle in the Square (I think), back around 1974. Such an intimate space, & there he was, mere yards away from me, singing "Once In Love With Amy." The eyes! The subtle, whimsical smile! Swoon....

Talent, charisma, great looks, Raul Julia is a much missed Actor for those who worked with him on the Adams Family films and on stage, and by his old and new fans. you should all see the cast of the Adams family films when they talk about him, they have never said anything mean about the man

I played Jenny in a community theatre production. The man who played MacHeath was stunning and engaged. But when we were on stage together, he was no longer engaged. He was MINE :-)

I know, I miss Ellen Greene too. I saw this on Bway in the 70s. The cast album was awesome.
Just saw a new version of The Three Penny Opera directed by Martha Clark. Very sexy, BUT there is no sexier Mack the Knife than Raul Julia. I saw Raul in the 1976 Lincoln Center version and I also saw Sting's and Alan Cummings versions. Raul was sexy, yes, but also scary. You could imagine Raul running a gang of thieves which neither Sting nor Alan Cummings had the cojonoes for.
The cojones part has me cracking up😂😂😂😂

An interesting sidelight on yr comment that the music appealed most to you mackjay2 - I'm sure no matter how clever Brecht's words were, without Kurt Weill he'd be a dry, ranting old moralist. These 2 talents complemented each other perfectly & produced a work of art widely considered to be the most important piece of theatre created in the 20th century. Guess what was chosen as the first theatre to be performed at the Sydney Opera House? Of course, the Threepenny Opera, a truly inspired choice
Divided here... Mack's not supposed to be attractive but somehow charismatic anyhow, yet Raul Julia is always enjoyable anyway.
depends on the version, sometimes he is described as raw and unpolished and in others with an intriguing atractive masculine look

Thanks for the comment. I like the words as well, but for me the music is the main thing. I love the Kurt Weill tunes. We'd not be hearing this very often if it weren't for Weill's music.

Does anyone out there know what filmed version of this has the most faithful German-English translation? I discovered 3PO through the 1930 Telefunken discs reissued on CD (before that all I had heard was Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife") and have come to find out that the translations and adaptations to English vary widely.
The 1976 NYSF version staring Ellen Green and Raul Julia is by far not only the most faithful translation (in fact, some critics panned it as being too literal of a translation) but im my opinion the best English version of the play. Ellen Green is probably the best Jenny after Lotte Lenya (though IMO I like her version better than Lotte)
I have loved Brecht's 3PO lyrics since I was a child & learned many worldly things from this gritty biting piece of theatre. BB's dirty words & low crude lyrics have been so sanitised in this 1989 version as to be almost unrecognisable - on the other hand it IS still the 3PO & in almost any local adaptation, it is still a feast of wisdom & an indulgence in moral truth & criminal candour. I prefer the Donmar Warehouse Production of 3PO from 1992 (on YT). Much nastier - & Scottish as well.
