- The Louis Armstrong House Museum has acquired the only known film of the great jazz musician in a recording studio, recording the 1959 album, "Satchmo Plays King Oliver." This exclusive video depicts Armstrong and his All Stars recording the master take of "I Ain't Got Nobody," as well as silent footage of them listening to the playback. Also featured in the clip are Trummy Young, trombone, Peanuts Hucko, clarinet, Billy Kyle, piano, Mort Herbert, bass and Danny Barcelona, drums. The original album was produced for Audio Fidelity records by Sid Frey, who commissioned the film to be made. It was discovered in a storage facility in 2012 and was brought to the Armstrong House with help of Frey's daughter, Andrea Bass.

I just read an article saying that some black artists came to criticize Armstrong for grinning all the time, because they felt like he was doing it just to "put the white folk at ease." Yet here we have a behind-the-scenes film, and there's the grin. I honestly think the man was just in love with being alive - and with music, of course. Thanks for posting this. The world needs more Satch!
What a treat to watch Pops recording, a few years after I'd heard him in my hometown as a teenager. He lights up the screen here, just as he took over from Streisand as he came down the stairs in Hello Dolly! This is so beautiful I want to send a link to all my friends.
I love the way he's in shorts and all of the other men are wearing pants. He even has his short open. He made sure that he was comfortable. I like that.
Proud that he is from my home city New Orleans!!! Nobody does it better than Satchmo!!!!
Always great to see genius at work. Thanks to all who had anything to do with making this available.
how could you dislike this?
You can't.
Always cool to see the creative process, especially pre 80’s film, you don't see to many films from past eras of the recording process....very cool find...also interesting to see a businesslike, subdued(for him)Louis, because his public persona was very carefree and jovial.
Exactly !
4:50 Man, how cool are these guys!
Fantastic, thanks for sharing this. My favourite part was seeing everyone hanging out at the end . Smoking and wiping off the sweat of a hot recording session.
Louis you had the whole world, warm and love.
From the first note Louis always sets up an incredible groove and no wonder he liked Peanuts Hucko and of course Trummy Young the tram man for Louis.
fantastic footage.... : )
What a treasure! Thanks for sharing.
Trumpets 🎺 galore! What a find.
Louis Armstrong was a MUSICAL GENIUS. I believe that he was THE MOST important person in the history of Jazz. Louis Armstrong "Set The Pace".
Louis great as always, but shoutout to homeboy on the clarinet! He in the zone, he feelin it.
Peanuts Hucko is the clarinetist. He said that he tried to play like Louis Armstrong, and I think in spirit he did.
This is pure gold
Wow! Genius at work!
Always a pleasure to see Louis armstrong
This tune could be in ANY Woody Allen film! Love me some Satchmo!
Incredible!!! I’ve listened to this song since I was a kid and the first time I’ve seen it played in front of me.
Wow! Just Wow! Thank You!
Powerful Footage !! glad this was found so Profound !!!
It's so wonderful, A Grand Merci from Paris 🇫🇷
*The favorite of my heart when we listened to Louis Armstrong we can die in peace !!! :))
Immortal classics.
Brilliant, thank you for sharing this.
Love it!
Great stuff as always from Louis and the All stars!!!!!! Although... Are we sure that's not Barney Bigard on clarinet rather than Peanuts Hucko?
Yes 100% Peanuts Hucko. Bigard was about 50lbs heavier and looks nothing like Hucko. His sound was also totally different than Hucko. More vibrato and woody tone. I could listen blind and tell you that's not Bigard.
@@SeanStanley1986 : Okay; thanks for that!!!

@@ale6723 I don’t think so but take paper and write your own
And after a good sing, always soothe and recondition your vocal cords with a smoke.
Yeah.
(cough!)
I love Louis so much. I just do. His voice was incredible, and he radiates light and happiness of life which is just crazy to me. Such a talented man. Here he talks about ‘keeping his chops’ : ruclips.net/video/wyNRy1To5vg/видео.html 💔 I can only dream of playing trumpet with as much as feel as him. So much respect for the trumpet. ✨
Go to house in queens Corona NY it is a museum now, and everyone can visited. his presence is 8n the room you should take a trip
Reminds me of a song that would be in a Fallout game
Fallout made me appreciate music like this
Are those old Telefunken 251 Microphones?
+NURREDIN looks to me like the newly introduced AKG C 24 stereo(!) mic.
+NURREDIN it does look like a 251 on the clarinet.
I always thought they used separate mics for vocal and trumpet. Wow, secrets revealed. Oh, wait! Yes, that's a stereo mic; so they used one channel of it for the trumpet and one for the vocal.
King Oliver never recorded this, did he?
Pity about the sound-quality! Why is it so bad?
+Audun Borrmann It's old, duh!
+Mbletz No. That's not why. You probably would not be able to separate the original recording from one recorded yesterday in terms of quality. Those exact microphones are still in use on the most prestigious of recordings of today. This should sound absolutely stunning regarding quality.
+Mbletz if you want to check this for yourself, feel free to google the microphones. They are the following models: Neumann KM69 , Telefunken ELA M 251, AKG C12
+UncleAdas is this actual recording released?
No. It's a film of the session, recorded without Mr. Armstrong's knowledge and recently discovered. I don't know if those microphones on screen are relevant to the sound you are hearing on this clip.
He's wearing a bib.
