I'm a bird farm sailor, serving aboard U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA 43 from Jun 67 to Aug 70. Home port was Alameda, as was for the Enterprise. I went aboard her as she came back from her WestPac cruise in June or July 67. I remember seeing Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda on the flight deck as they had filmed a movie aboard.
The Coral Sea was a big ship, but Enterprise's flight deck was level with our 07 level on our Island structure. She was huge, even compared to Forestall and Ranger. It was a treat to be aboard her. Almost two years later, while we were in the Tonkin Gulf at Yankee Station off North Vietnam, we got word that Enterprise had a catastrophic fire on the flight deck while undergoing ORI south of Maui. 28 men killed. I spoke to the Admiral aboard her at the time, who had transferred his flag to Coral Sea. He explained he thought at the time they may lose the ship. The flight deck crew fought the fire, including exploding ordnance, with unbelievable courage. Remember that these were mostly 18 to 22 year old kids. my salute to all the bird farms sailors out there, it's a dangerous place to be with potential for disaster at any time.

I served aboard that ship off of Vietnam. She showed me the world, and the many moods of the sea. She carried her crew and air wing through 2 hurricanes on that deployment in the Indian Ocean. No problem. The destroyer escorts had to bug out. She was so fast I swear you could water ski behind her, and she routinely outran her escorts.
Enterprise was refueled 3 times in 51 years. That ship could cruse at flank speed for a decade - without stopping. The miles she covered would circle the earth 40 times.
Gotta tell you, it raises the hair on my arms to watch this, Thank you for putting together all these great memories! I can almost smell the JP.
And Tony, Russia has a single oil burning carrier. No contest.

@@johnjones5354 I stood relieved. There are only a handful of fellow Nuc-Laureates that went into the early 1980s aboard Enterprise and on shore station transfers. Many have passed on, I am very sad to say. I really never thought I would see the day that the Big-E would be decommissioned. Guess I never gave it much thought. Over the years both ships I was on were decommissioned, the other was the USS Camden AOE-2 out of Long Beach Naval Shipyard in 1972 as a TAD for w months between ET-A School in Great Lakes, and NPS at Mare Island. NPS and NPTU Idaho Falls (A1W) are both closed as well since the 90s. It is just a really odd feeling. Many good memories of times now long in the past 43 to 52 years ago. Sadly I was driven more to breaking the constant tie to the Enterprise and not being able to transfer unless I re-upped for 6 more years. A 7 years I pulled the plug in order to get my college degree, and then another, with more periodic schools afterwards. I hope and pray that I will still be vertical for the first C-Note of the USS Enterprise CVN-80 at the turn of this decade. I’ll be pushing 80 myself by then. It would be a fantastic moment in my life though. Thank-you for your meaningful reply. Oh, my moniker in those 1 and 3 plant “illegal” Dopey Books, was “Salty-Dawg”, 🤣

The phrase, "I have your 6" originated from a combat pilot informing another that he was protecting him from an unseen danger. This video shows that "I have your 6" begins on the flight deck. Each deck crew member is performing a job to protect that pilot and his aircraft from anything that could endanger his safe takeoff and landing. No matter how small his task, any deck crewman passing by a flight officer can proudly say to him, "I have your 6." The video clip of the carrier task force at 22:10 should have the caption, " Hey America, we have your 6." This old Air Force guy got a lot of goose bumps from this video.

If you're going to get technical about it... since the early days of military aviation, pilots are taught to think of directions around them as the face of a clock. Directly ahead of them is 12, (12 o'clock high, etc) on the right is 3:00, on the left is 9:00. Directly behind them is 6:00. To tell someone "I have your six", means literally "I have your back", ie I'm watching for problems that are coming up behind you. I'm sure you know this William, just for those who may not.

I wish I had been able to serve aboard that ship. I joined the Marines instead of the Navy. I saw some Marine aircraft in there. The Enterprise was a one of a kind ship, in a class of her own. She was the most desirable ship in the Navy. I'm glad they are going to build a new Enterprise, unfortunately it will be one of the Ford Class ships, and while the new Enterprise will be a better ship than the original, she will no longer be one of a kind. I wish they had been able to save her, but they have to get the reactors out, and when she was built, no provisions were made for that.

Gerald, One of my Filipino friends was that ship and he's one of the marines. I think he was on the ship in the late 80s. He's name is George Pansoy he even have a younger brother who was in the U.S. Marines but never served on the ships.

Patricia Sinopoli they say the ear drum burst at 150db. typically the aircraft make 140db +. our ear protections only good for 70db cancelation. the noise is so intense it also compromises your sense of touch. yes maam all us roof rats are hearing impaired. according to the va the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is not a loud work environment. id like to cram their heads into the tail pipe of a bird during a hi power turn.

I was on the Enterprise from 68 to 69. Had to fly over to West Pac to catch the carrier online in Gulf of Tonkin. Then in 69, we went back to Vietnam. Was on it long enough for that cruise and was flown back to be discharged at Treasure Island in Jun 69. When we were off Vietnam, they had us working 12 hours per day, 6 days a week building bombs to drop on Vietnam. They could never get enough bombs. We used to go to the top of the island at lunch time and catch some sun and watch flight ops. Too many people for me, had to wait in line for everything.

Enjoyed the excellent video. I spent 3 1/2 years as deck edge and console operator of the aft cats on the USS Constellation CVA-64 back in the mid 60's. There is one scene that jumped out at me and I had to play it back to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. At frame 19:40 it shows an F-18 landing on the deck but the scene is a mirror image of the actual scene and it has the island of the Enterprise on the port side of the deck instead of the starboard side. You can also see that the big E that is painted on the back of the island looks like a 3. Don't know how that happened but my brain did a double take.

The first USS Enterprise was a captured British Ship in the Revolutionary war. The second an american light cruiser. The third a cruise that fought in the war of 1812, the war with spain and sunk most of the ships in those wars. The fourth was a cruiser in the civil war I believe, the 5th was some sort of balloon, the sixth CV-6 aircraft carrier in Midway, CV-65 the first nuclear aircraft carrier, CVN-85 dual twin nuclear reactors, maximum 100 aircraft, 95 aircraft normally, 7,000+ crew, anti submarine capabilities, anti air, anti ship, and auto cannons stationed on lower hull portions, twice as big as the previous Enterprise. Oh and don't forget the shuttle enterprise.
