This was the height of Vegeta’s character growth. Super basically regressed him to his Android/Cell Saga characterization. Goku was never really savage, just smart in battle, and got down to business when he had to.
I always thought Kaioken was neater than Super Saiyan, mainly because of the color and because Goku couldn't just spam it. He had to use it strategically due to the time limit.

Both are 'wrong' technically, but the common pronunciation of Saiyan is too iconic to change now.
It was pronounced right in the Uncut Ocean Dub movies because *Pioneer* were the ones in charge of the script, pronunciations and so on for the Movies. For the main series FUNimation was in charge of that, as well as the TV version of Movie 3, but they split that into 3 episodes for it's initial Syndicated run back in November 1997, so they are considered episodes. It's why you see such a stark contrast between the series and movies for the Ocean Dub. The Ocean Dub Movies have very accurate scripts, and the Ocean Dub Movie DVDs even put the Japanese version on there with subs, which was unheard of at the time.

He really was the first to demonstrate that Son Goku's proper voice can work in English. There are ways to reconcile it, though MasakoX is probably the best example.
Doesn't help that Kelamis was the only one of the early Goku actors to pronounce Kaio Ken correctly. Schemmel would pronounce right later on in Kai, but that was in 2009.

Genesis Malakh That is why I LOVE Peter Kelamis and that's why this is my favorite film. It was my first DBZ film I saw and thankfully managed to keep it uncut and retained the kick ass music. I never heard an original Japanese theme before when I was 10 years old then.

Other than the fact it was the one I saw first as a 10 year old they actually kept the original soundtrack intact unlike Funimation. Which I thought was stupid.
Yup, I was first exposed to DBZ in the early Days of Toonami, when they hadn't even released the Funimation dub yet. So up to Goku's fight with Recoome, that is Ocean. From that point on, is Funimation. Just like it was on the show. I am too old to learn to love Kai; I have the Funimation and Ocean scenes burned into my soul.
@@darmocat same. I remember after Goku arrived on Namek they did a rerun from the beginning. Then when we assumed new episodes would air, we got new voices. Vegeta was the most obvious change. Maybe his voice box got so injured by recoome that when he healed it never did 100% and got even deeper overtime (by super). When he ate the bean, he mentally said ge felt great in old voice not out loud. So jelly vegeta in Super can be like his old younger self trying to come back.
2:03 - Peter Kalamis was great with this one! This was one, _continuous_ kiai. Sean would've needed breaths for this, plus Kalamis sounds like Nozawa during this whole clip!
Love how Goku said KAIOKEN and burst out the ice like a badass and the kaioken had a flaming wind sound effect and the fight animations are so smooth and fluid, this is dope.
Peter Kelamis sounded almost spot on to Nozawa screaming the Kaio-Ken. IDK why people look down on the Ocean cast. The dialogue was accurate, the music was still spot on, and the voices were great.

I can’t stop coming back to watch this-the voice acting is AMAZING! Especially when Goku got hit by the soldiers from all sides! Kelamis really made it sound like it hurt like hell!
Jose. It's because it gives you that dbz vibe from the beginning of the series like the epic fight with Raditz. Now it's just flying and shooting powerful key blast at eachother. Instead of seeing more combat on the ground.
Jose Garcia BEcause it's so brutal. You can feel every punch, where as as the series went on, it was more about the spectacle. Sure they were more powerful, but this one just strikes me as far more brutal because he didn't curbstomp the bad guys after getting Super Saiyan 2
I bought the dvds of the first 3 movies of this dub it's my favorite dub. Accurate to the JP script using the OG score just like Kai did except most of ocean consists of good people.
Traditional animation looks so much better than CG animation, but CG animation is way quicker and cheaper so basically nothing is done the old-school way any more. This is true for Western animation as well as Japanese animation.
I think he's pretty soft though his fighting ability is NOT! He doesn't have a lot of killing intent compared to some of the people he fought. Perfect type of hero.

Peter Kelamis did a good job of portraying Goku here. While Sean is still my #1 pick, I just can't help but respect him for being able to capture Nozawa's Goku very well. Watching Super made me appreciate Nozawa's voice work alot, so hearing Kelamis deliver a fantastic performance here is making me want Kelamis to return in the Bang Zoom dub at the very least.

Does Kelamis do anime anymore? That’s why he replaced Ian Corlett, because Corlett didn’t wanna do anime anymore. And Kirby Morrow is of course unfortunately dead, so Kelamis is the only choice left.
You know how you can listen to an awesome solo, and it just touches your heart and brings a tear to your eye? That's what Peter Kelamis's Goku performance does to me. Everything in this movie just accents moments perfectly. The sound mixing, staging of the scenes, the sound FX, the acting. For me, it is perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it.
Goku from early DBZ has a very monkeyish aesthetic to him, he's always squatting very low, he's very buff but you see little definition most of the time, his ears are huge and there's the way he open his mouth very wide when he's yelling, I really dig it.
That was the most and will always be the most epic kaio ken moment when he broke that ice, still get goosebumps from this version. They used to use it in commercials for DBZ too.
Agree I prefer Shawn's voice, but in these films Peter's voice was better. I wish Funimaton's English dub would re-dub the films and Dragon Ball Season again.
When he did the “Kaioken Kai Break” you could feel the sudden onset of pain in his scream from the stress of using the technique right before the power up kicked in. Def my favorite English dub Goku!

Love this with the Ocean dub over the clean footage and original musical score. I grew up with this dub before it switched over to Funimation. I always preferred those voices a bit more comparatively. Same with the original music. Was never a fan of Bruce Faulconer’s strange electro-drone BGMs.
There's this division between english speaking fans of Dragon Ball and japanese speaking fans. Japanese fans appreciate that Goku sounds like he always has, that he's voice acted by the same performer since the beginning and that he has the voice of a child even as an adult. English fans, on the other hand, generally prefer a Goku that sounds more like an adult man. Peter Kelamis was perfect because he bridged that gap, giving a voice that is clearly an adult man, but with a youth and innocence that captures what Masako Nozawa gives the character.
The Ocean Dub in this movie is so much better than Funimation. Not just because I like Kelamis better as Goku, but because the sound design is so much better. The Kaioken sound effects sound like a damn jet engine going off.
The background art at 0:58 is so pretty. The art in this film period, is just really gorgeous. That's one thing I miss dearly about 80's and 90's anime.
So I recently watched the re-dubbed version of the World's Strongest and it just didn't feel the same to me. To go with Gohan's cheesy dream-music being completely different, the ambient music and sounds just wasn't doing it for me. What is one of my favorite DBZ movies all of a sudden just felt like an old show I liked as a kid. I say all that to bring me up to this point where I'm watching/hearing The World's Strongest as I remember. This put a smile on my face and gave me that flood of nostalgia. Goku's voice being so damn high-pitch but working so great to make him sound like a mad-man when he uses the kaioken, the explosion sound effects, and whirling ambient wind noises of the Kaioken, and the build up of the music when Goku starts casting the Kamehameha on Dr.Wheelo. This is why I love(d) this movie.
2:46 holy fuck! The way kelamis screams immediately after goku invokes the kaioken is incredible. That surge of potential energy would be WAY too much for an average human. Good thing he's a saiyan.
Man, Peter Kelamis really nails the _high pitch_ of the screams too, something that Sean, however awesome he may be, could never do. He always sounded gravelly.

Biggest reason I loved the ocean dubs, other than all of the dialogue is just... so much better, the emotional range too. Buuuut.. When they are screaming, they are really screaming. While I know the lower toned shouts are healthier throat wise for the recording artists of Funimation, and I would not dare ask them to destroy their own vocal chords and throats for me, it just doesn't have the same feeling. Imagine if Asura's wrath had that funimation even toned yelling stuff.
Cant agree more. But i think the reason why its way cooler is the way Goku fights in Kaio-ken and before he uses it. Hes doing some crazy Marterial artists move like the Backkick against that Ice Guy and the intense sound it makes when he punches the lightning guy in the face.
the scene starting from 1:23 is beyond awesome. Goku, the main hero, getting fcked up but still charging into battle had me locked in as a kid and even now.
Not only is this the BEST voice acting i've ever seen with DBZ, the sound effects are top of the line. This dub is so underrated and overlooked its unbelievable.
Seeing the Ocean Dubs of the movies makes me wish they got to dub the series like this, accurate script, no censorships and whatnot. If they didn't have Saban breathing down their necks their dub of the series could have been amazing.

1:10 - 2:30 is just so entertaining to watch. So much stuff going on. And I LOVE how the animators portrayed the 3x Kaio Ken, showing Goku flying up to beat the electricity guy while the other guy is flying after getting hit. Incredible. Pete Kalamis knew EXACTLY how to portray Goku across ANY English Dub of the anime.
I remember the ocean dubs. I was so confused as I also saw Funimation dubs the same time. But man, I miss this old series. Characters actually used martial arts!!!! Now it's nothing but lasers and giant energy balls.
1:50-2:10 For those that have seen Nozawa's version, Kelamis is actually superior here. Which is incredible. Nozawa's scream right after the Kaio-Ken was actually cut into two screams for some odd reason. Kelamis's scream ADR was carried through.
Still the best DBZ movie. And this is still the best dub of this movie. This piece in particular was my introduction to DBZ. Up until then, I'd grown up as a Superman junkie... needless to say, was a wee bit overwhelmed.
Even from Mexico, where we idolize the Mexican voice actor for Goku. I must say that Peter Kelamis was the perfect Goku, striking the perfect balance between being comedic and serious in his tone, voice and acting.
I also like that the ocean dub, like the japanese dub, they are not shouting their KI-ais constantly. You only release the scream / breathe of air at the pinnacle of your strike.

True that.. grew up watching DBZ in the 90s, it's like they went through puberty with us, the voices sound younger in the early seasons
Yup, I was first exposed to DBZ in the early Days of Toonami, when they hadn't even released the Funimation dub yet. So up to Goku's fight with Recoome, that is Ocean. From that point on, is Funimation. Just like it was on the show. I am too old to learn to love Kai; I have the Funimation and Ocean scenes burned into my soul.

@@darmocat same. I remember after Goku arrived on Namek they did a rerun from the beginning. Then when we assumed new episodes would air, we got new voices. Vegeta was the most obvious change.
Maybe his voice box got so injured by recoome that when he healed it never did 100% and got even deeper overtime (by super). When he ate the bean, he mentally said ge felt great in old voice not out loud. So jelly vegeta in Super can be like his old younger self trying to come back.
To think this is the same voice actor who voices Rolf in Ed Edd n Eddy. You can hear it in his voice lol

2:03 - Peter Kalamis was great with this one! This was one, _continuous_ kiai. Sean would've needed breaths for this, plus Kalamis sounds like Nozawa during this whole clip!
Love how Goku said KAIOKEN and burst out the ice like a badass and the kaioken had a flaming wind sound effect and the fight animations are so smooth and fluid, this is dope.

Peter Kelamis sounded almost spot on to Nozawa screaming the Kaio-Ken. IDK why people look down on the Ocean cast. The dialogue was accurate, the music was still spot on, and the voices were great.

It's like having Liam Neeson, Jack Nicholson, and Samuel Jackson reading Three Stooges Script seriously, versus The Situation, Andy Dick, and Kristen Stewart reading lines from The Matrix.
My childhood consisted of the first 3 movies in ocean dub but everything else dbz was in funimation's dub
I think the first 3 DBZ films are the best ones.
I really like how the first 3 movies in the Ocean dub kept the Japanese music and the original dialogue.

Jose. It's because it gives you that dbz vibe from the beginning of the series like the epic fight with Raditz. Now it's just flying and shooting powerful key blast at eachother. Instead of seeing more combat on the ground.
ALL Shonen fights should be like this.
Jose Garcia BEcause it's so brutal. You can feel every punch, where as as the series went on, it was more about the spectacle. Sure they were more powerful, but this one just strikes me as far more brutal because he didn't curbstomp the bad guys after getting Super Saiyan 2

I bought the dvds of the first 3 movies of this dub it's my favorite dub. Accurate to the JP script using the OG score just like Kai did except most of ocean consists of good people.

The small details and lighting in OD were amazing. Wasn’t no playing around in ocean dub every one was going for the kill. The artistry was real.
Traditional animation looks so much better than CG animation, but CG animation is way quicker and cheaper so basically nothing is done the old-school way any more. This is true for Western animation as well as Japanese animation.

Flanker Eagle Goku is the most underrated character. They always portray him as a dumbass but actually he's vicious.
I think he's pretty soft though his fighting ability is NOT! He doesn't have a lot of killing intent compared to some of the people he fought. Perfect type of hero.

While Sean is still my #1 pick, I just can't help but respect him for being able to capture Nozawa's Goku very well.
Watching Super made me appreciate Nozawa's voice work alot, so hearing Kelamis deliver a fantastic performance here

I assume they meant Ocean Group, as BangZoom is an American dubbing agency, and Kelamis is a Canadian talent.
@@therandom_dude The Bang Zoom dub was a Los Angeles-based dub of Super that was done by the company Bang Zoom Entertainment for Asian audiences.
The dub has unfortunately been cancelled for a good while at this point, though.
Does Kelamis do anime anymore? That’s why he replaced Ian Corlett, because Corlett didn’t wanna do anime anymore. And Kirby Morrow is of course unfortunately dead, so Kelamis is the only choice left.

You know how you can listen to an awesome solo, and it just touches your heart and brings a tear to your eye? That's what Peter Kelamis's Goku performance does to me. Everything in this movie just accents moments perfectly. The sound mixing, staging of the scenes, the sound FX, the acting. For me, it is perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it.

Goku from early DBZ has a very monkeyish aesthetic to him, he's always squatting very low, he's very buff but you see little definition most of the time, his ears are huge and there's the way he open his mouth very wide when he's yelling, I really dig it.
That was the most and will always be the most epic kaio ken moment when he broke that ice, still get goosebumps from this version.
They used to use it in commercials for DBZ too.

When he did the “Kaioken Kai Break” you could feel the sudden onset of pain in his scream from the stress of using the technique right before the power up kicked in. Def my favorite English dub Goku!

Love this with the Ocean dub over the clean footage and original musical score.
I grew up with this dub before it switched over to Funimation. I always preferred those voices a bit more comparatively. Same with the original music. Was never a fan of Bruce Faulconer’s strange electro-drone BGMs.
Even the dubbing of Ocean Dub only changed the music, they didn't change it in the movies
There's this division between english speaking fans of Dragon Ball and japanese speaking fans. Japanese fans appreciate that Goku sounds like he always has, that he's voice acted by the same performer since the beginning and that he has the voice of a child even as an adult. English fans, on the other hand, generally prefer a Goku that sounds more like an adult man. Peter Kelamis was perfect because he bridged that gap, giving a voice that is clearly an adult man, but with a youth and innocence that captures what Masako Nozawa gives the character.
The Ocean Dub in this movie is so much better than Funimation. Not just because I like Kelamis better as Goku, but because the sound design is so much better. The Kaioken sound effects sound like a damn jet engine going off.

The background art at 0:58 is so pretty. The art in this film period, is just really gorgeous. That's one thing I miss dearly about 80's and 90's anime.

So I recently watched the re-dubbed version of the World's Strongest and it just didn't feel the same to me. To go with Gohan's cheesy dream-music being completely different, the ambient music and sounds just wasn't doing it for me. What is one of my favorite DBZ movies all of a sudden just felt like an old show I liked as a kid.
I say all that to bring me up to this point where I'm watching/hearing The World's Strongest as I remember. This put a smile on my face and gave me that flood of nostalgia. Goku's voice being so damn high-pitch but working so great to make him sound like a mad-man when he uses the kaioken, the explosion sound effects, and whirling ambient wind noises of the Kaioken, and the build up of the music when Goku starts casting the Kamehameha on Dr.Wheelo. This is why I love(d) this movie.
2:46 holy fuck! The way kelamis screams immediately after goku invokes the kaioken is incredible. That surge of potential energy would be WAY too much for an average human. Good thing he's a saiyan.
Man, Peter Kelamis really nails the _high pitch_ of the screams too, something that Sean, however awesome he may be, could never do. He always sounded gravelly.

Biggest reason I loved the ocean dubs, other than all of the dialogue is just... so much better, the emotional range too. Buuuut.. When they are screaming, they are really screaming. While I know the lower toned shouts are healthier throat wise for the recording artists of Funimation, and I would not dare ask them to destroy their own vocal chords and throats for me, it just doesn't have the same feeling. Imagine if Asura's wrath had that funimation even toned yelling stuff.

Cant agree more. But i think the reason why its way cooler is the way Goku fights in Kaio-ken and before he uses it. Hes doing some crazy Marterial artists move like the Backkick against that Ice Guy and the intense sound it makes when he punches the lightning guy in the face.

Seeing the Ocean Dubs of the movies makes me wish they got to dub the series like this, accurate script, no censorships and whatnot. If they didn't have Saban breathing down their necks their dub of the series could have been amazing.

1:10 - 2:30 is just so entertaining to watch. So much stuff going on. And I LOVE how the animators portrayed the 3x Kaio Ken, showing Goku flying up to beat the electricity guy while the other guy is flying after getting hit. Incredible.

1:50-2:10 For those that have seen Nozawa's version, Kelamis is actually superior here. Which is incredible. Nozawa's scream right after the Kaio-Ken was actually cut into two screams for some odd reason. Kelamis's scream ADR was carried through.
Still the best DBZ movie. And this is still the best dub of this movie. This piece in particular was my introduction to DBZ. Up until then, I'd grown up as a Superman junkie... needless to say, was a wee bit overwhelmed.

Even from Mexico, where we idolize the Mexican voice actor for Goku. I must say that Peter Kelamis was the perfect Goku, striking the perfect balance between being comedic and serious in his tone, voice and acting.
I also like that the ocean dub, like the japanese dub, they are not shouting their KI-ais constantly. You only release the scream / breathe of air at the pinnacle of your strike.

i absolutely love the funimation dub, but i gotta admit this is probably the best english goku out there, especially with how good his kaioken yell is. sean schemmel's got nothing on peter kelamis
