    Winifred Attwell was well known and popular in the UK during 50s/60s and even had her own television show during that period. She very often featured two pianos, one being a grand piano (if my memory serves me correctly) and the other (which she called the "other piano") being a honky tonk upright. She would begin her performance playing classical or music using that style on the grand and then proceed to the "other piano" to play such pieces as Black and White rag, Poor People of Paris etc.

    15:25 My dad used to sing us a parody of that hit song:
    I want a beer like the beer
    That pickled dear old Dad
    It was the beer, and the only beer
    That daddy ever had
    A good old fashioned beer
    With lots of foam
    It took ten men to carry daddy home
    Oh, I want a beer like the beer
    That pickled my old man

    LOVE ragtime especially what you play & how you play it . They just don't write em like that any more. The 'history' lessons are such a bonus. You mention names of old' musicians' my Dad talked about when I was a tot, 3/4ths of a century ago.

    Thanks for mentioning the great Winifred Atwell. She lived for a long time in Australia, and was the organist at my local church when I was a child. She was very much loved by Australians !

    Adam, you are fantastic! The first video I saw by you was when you were playing 12th Street Rag, which appeared to be done at a house party. The little boy with the glasses standing next to you was completely enthralled by your playing. I was too. I couldn't get over how you kept speeding up that 12th street rag as you went along. Absolutely amazing! I subscribed immediately after watching that video. I'm hoping to hear Kitten on the Keys written by Zez Confrey. The first time I heard the song was back in the 50s or 60s by Knuckles O'Toole.

I enjoyed your music very much as well as your commentary. You've motivated me to practice more even though it's very hard for me. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Do you have a list of 50 ragtime / honky-tonk classics for the piano that an aspiring piano student can learn over time to represent a full repertoire of that time?

  • @elmerfudd979
    @elmerfudd979 2 месяца назад

    Honky-Tonk pianist would put tacks on the hammers to get the 'honky-tonk sound'. it goes back to the 1800's and strongly associated with country music. The first syncopated bass songs were by Gottschalk in the mid 1800's.
