An intriguing insight into the social and cultural changes in an Indian community in Northern NSW, where traditional arranged marriages and maintenance of faith are being challenged by contemporary Australian influences.
Harbinder and Sarvie are two young Sikh -- Australian girls, growing up in a traditional community of Sikh banana farmers in the country town of Woolgoolga. In a community dominated by the Temple committee, there isn't any room for free will. Harbinder has an arranged marriage in India but Sarvie is "ex-communicated from the community because of her
marriage" to a white Australian man. This documentary portrays the ongoing generational conflict from the point of view of young Australian-Indians.

The First Sikh Gurdwara (Temple) Hastings Street, Woolgoolga NSW Australia was built with collective generosity of the following men and their families.
Mr Mangha S Atwal was kind enough to allow the Local Sikh community to acquire the very valuable land which he could have easily kept himself, where the First Sikh Gurdwara now stands. Mr Mangha S Atwal put the interest of the Sikh Community above himself, for which he will always be remembered.
Other elders who contributed to the build by mortgaging their personal assets for bank loan and donating funds are as follows….
Mr Piara S Ratandia, Mr William S Malhi, Mrs Jagir S Sodhi, Mr Gurbakhsh S Atwal, Mr Naranjin S More, Mr James Guljara S Malhi.
Thus the First Sikh Gurdwara (Temple) was built by the Sikh Community not by any one individual or family, it was a collective effort by above mentioned Sardars and their families. If anyone said otherwise they are not being truthful and are devaluing the sacrifices made by seven families.

Hindu's and Sikh's dont hate each other. They are very similar cultures. The Anti-sikh riots of the 80's is a blot on India, and the 'Hindus' who did it should be hanged. Thank you for your wishes, I appreciate it. All the best to you too! :)

I do respect all faith's mate. I am Hindu and my girlfriend is Sikh. All I am saying is Indian culture is all about integration along with staying pure to ones roots. Its unfair for me to comment for these people cause Australia was a lot more racist when these guys came here and hence they are more defended about their culture, but now times have changed and I feel we should adapt to the world as well :-)
P.S- I am very much sticking to my culture!

I dont understand One thing people leave their culture behind and agree to apapt in new foreign culture. Specially Punjabi community. Then they say volumes about the praise for their country and nation and yet choose to live in Abroad. This concept of our old Generation running away from country and setting up example for the younger Generations that Good life is possible only in Abroad had really devastated Punjab and rest if India . Why i am pointing towards punjab is that even these days The families their still keep this dream to immigrate to foreign lands for better lives.
Just imagine if the people in older Generations were that loyal to the country and their own state they woukf have returned back to their Roots. But Greed never ends . Punjabis and Haryanvis and other indians dont realise that if the trend like this continues the same Our Rich culture will be slowly transformed into Western culture.
What i see punjabi culture in todays scenario. People grow up in punjab go to other cities pass ielts PTE etc and good to fly to other nations. They have no vision to stay back and improve the cprtupt system there.
Gone are the days when thus Rich state has given birth to so many Brave warriors who fought with Britishers and Muslim Rulers for the freedom and Religion. But now people dont value their sacrifices. I am sure those people who Sacrificed their lives for the freedom struggle if watching India today they perhaps will be thinking why they have Sacrificed their lives for these stupid people who dont Value their doings.
My point is its ok of you like other countries. Its ok if you like to assimilate yourselves in their Culture . I want todays youth should think and i mean really think twice is it Really worth of Leaving your beautiful and Rich country ? I believe if anyone who is faithful to their country would never leave it.

@TheSardar22 Let's be honest. He did it to get a White wife. But it's true that the Abarahamic religions make you a slave and denounce the power of humans whilst Dharmic religions teach that humans have great power in themselves. I don't believe in the Abarahmic religions because they are too violent, dogmatic and factually wrong.
But I think there is a problem from trying to seperate cultural practices and religion. Practices tend to become outdated and drag religion down with them.

@@Sukhrajvlogsnz You didn't understand what I said. I said if your culture is that important to you , why would you want to leave your country? It is obvious some Indian parents love their culture more than they love themselves, if that is the case why not just stay in India, so that your children stay within Indian culture. If you go to another country and have kids, they are going to follow the culture of the country they are in. if you love your culture so much why leave India? it makes no sense? The kids have to suffer because they cannot follow the culture of the country they are born in. The parents don't understand just like they love India, their children love american, UK, canada or Australia. If you want your children to follow indian culture 100 percent purely then stay in India

Hinduism is based on two war mythologies of Ramayn and Mahabharat gita multiplied by superstitions thus inculcating a morbid violent mindset amongst Hindus. Sikhism promotes universal brotherhood, equality and justice for all.

Well going with the same attitude I would say- even Brahmins are oppressed( I am a brahmin). If we all keep on crying all the time (which is what's happening in India and rest of the world) then EVERYONE is oppressed. We are all at receiving end of 'hate' and now it is hard to distinguish action from reaction. I am marrying a sikh btw, and I bow my head in your (and now my) Gurudwara like any other sikh.
    Dont keep the hate alive

White daughters-in-law don't help with housework? Are they all that bad? I'm Indian and I'm asking this. You want an Indian girl who stays with you and massages your legs when they are aching and respects you the way you want to respected, whatever the hell that means, then get a maid from Punjab. You just want a subservient doormat you can push around what else.

It is precisely such fucked up thinking that ruins people's happiness and the more we can stand up to it the better. The only way we can revolutionise thinking is by taking matters into our own hands sometimes.

It makes me wonder why these people are so stuck about their Indianess. I mean it is one thing to preserve one's heritage and quite another to cling to the nationality of forefathers. Being an Indian myself I am not so proud of these people building pockets of their own community and refusing to call themselves Australian.
But it does'nt stand true for all Sikh's though.
Good documentary, pathetic background music and could have been edited better.
