- In this installment, I analyze not a movie, not a TV show, but a viral dance video: Casey Frey's "Get tf out my way type way." This seemingly simple viral video deserves close inspection because of its masterful editing, camerawork, and storytelling. I'm surprised nobody else has analyzed it in detail before.

This is one of those things where people will think you are being ironic but you aren't.
We used to shut people in mental facilities to be treated with electroshock therapy for posting vertical videos. To be unironic in these circumstances is against the law in #Russia
I checked to see if it was April 1st.
At first I thought it was serious...then I thought it was a joke...then I questioned my mental health
i love this
Yeah I cant believe this...its good tho
The chopping of the wood into two pieces perfectly symbolises his two conflicting personalities
Y'all shitposting here and I got nothing better to do than read it all.
Everyone knows that the opening of a film is the most important scene. It needs to immediate familiarize the viewer with the themes and story that are about to come. The opening cut with the wood cutting foreshadows the themes of identity crisis and inner conflict. In just one minute time Frey was able to illustrate a story so strong and immersive that other creators cant achieve in 1+ hours. Anazing
It also seems to be a sledge hammer 🔨 after the chop?
or splitting from the group
Bro don’t do this to me 😂
Finally, someone takes this brilliant piece of art seriously

Gonna become an English professor just to show this as an example of the hero's journey
lmao
Fuckin do it!!
that would be awesome dude !
while it's not really a good example of the heros journey, it is a great video to get students to think analytically about media they would never think analytically about. Think of people who say that english teachers just overthink stuff, and that the author didn't intend anything. When in comparison, it becomes very clear that all of this was intended, and interpretations of the video that don't include all the stuff are less interesting because of it.
Wait no it’s a pretty amazing example of like 8 of the 12 steps of the hero’s journey. Went frame by frame and saw shades of most of the steps
"Get tf out of my way type way" is a cinematic masterpiece was not a take I ever expected to see, but I fully support it!
Thought it was a joke at first😅, but was like wait ok....I see...yeah ok🤔🧐

Really looking forward to "Minecraft manhunt in a nutshell is a cinematic masterpiece"
@@Nugcon it’s not it’s the totally opposite
I thought I was the only one who found this video above average
I was wondering why your vids didn’t get the popularity it deserves @Mugo
Can’t believe you don’t make the connection between the protagonist starting off using his hands for physical labour contrasted by the mentor being introduced by effortlessly opening the door with his mind. This shows the audience that he’s from a different world that the protagonist is not yet familiar with and shows the audience the other side of the story circle that the character must cross into in order to emerge more powerful upon his return.
Amazing video by the way.
OMG I love this, excellent observation
Star wars is a paragon of the hero's journey. It's a stretch, but I wonder if using the force to open the door was an intentional connection
Or maybe the main character uses the mentor as a motivation to bypass the rejection of the antagonist for example the main character may have hallucinated the mentor hence the mentor using powers which obviously isn’t of any human kind. If you notice in the video the antagonist does not notice or give any attention to the mentor. The main character does though, in a way that supports him in overcoming the rejection.
Idk this could be just your own meaning. He uses this power regularly in his videos and it can just be a simple reference to that.
THIS i cant believe he didnt mention the door! That’s significant
“Get tf out of my way type way” is an allegory for class consciousness was not a take I was expecting.

Wasn't it josh ovalle who filmed this? He's literally a filmmaker so it makes sense that it's so well paced and shot!
Nice call out
oh man I used to love Josh on Vine, what a throwback lol
Came here to comment this. I think film quaker shoots a lot of caseys stuff which is why it's so well cut. Even their Twang video is really well put together
Josh is back.
Shame he never learned to read :/
Bro, I always thought about this but never imagined there would be a video essay lol
Same, man. I know what you mean. I'm not mad Jack did tho lol

This is by far my favorite video on the internet. The music, the dancing, the editing...it is all so very hypnotic. WE NEEDED THIS ANALYSIS!!!!
I have watched this 60 second clip at least a hundred times over the span of the last 1,5 years.
you got the voice down pat. it's amazing
A casey frey film analysis? Jack you’re gonna make me ACT UP 🥵😳
Acting REAL brazy
Hahahhahahaha omfg this killed me, thank you
It would a shame to ruin with words... *slaps face*
I've been obsessed with that video since I first saw it... I don't know how to describe Casey Frey's terrible and magnetic energy... I want to be his parole officer
"I want to be his parole officer."
That has to be the most spectacularly creative and impactful compliments ever written.
An addition: Characters do not share a frame until the very last shot. Despite not seeing the good, the bad, and the worker ego in the same space, Frey uses "line of sight" editing to create the illusion that these characters are interacting with one another.
In the end, the evil Casey is unable to share space with anyone, rejecting the camera entirely, while the good Casey and worker Casey form a union, living not separately but together.
Feel like you should've also mentioned the ending few seconds of the video in which you see the protagonist and the good ego doing different dances. They're both finally doing their own moves and while the mentor looks at him, he appreciates what he's doing and decides to copy the protagonist, showing that he has grown and they're now at a more equal footing. Also showing that the protagonist is embracing his own individuality.
i could do an analysis on this analysis. the comedy comes from the fact that this is not a joke at all but a deep look into a video that may have these themes but could also be a shallow dance video, who’s to say. this video validates the former opinion and gives reasons to feel that way. if it had any hint of a joke during the explanation, the whole video would fall flat. you could watch this as a parody or as a genuine analysis. i choose the latter. thank you, now you see it.
I will now analyze your analysis of this analysis
@@Weretooth DO IT THEN
he never did it :pensive:
i'd like to point out that the cut on him flipping off the camera -- moving backwards in time on the cut, so you actually see the motion twice -- is a technique used by martial arts filmmakers like jackie chan to make punches feel more impactful. the most fun part of this video is its quality is 100% intentional
This is un ironically the best video essay on youtube
It was bizarre how good it was.
It has layers. The dancing is legit, the humor is funny, and it really delivers a message.
ohhh, now i see it.
Wait a second...it’s not April Fool’s!
This needs to be illegal.
I was thinking the same
My thoughts exactly
Because it's not a joke, it's the TRUTH
i don't know how i lived so long without knowing this masterpiece exists
I'm honestly glad someone made a video about this, that song video is so hypnotizing and very well done.
Ah, the subtle genius of the playful arts. There's always more to memes than the laugh.
This video taught me more than film school ever did
Even if you don't have artistic knowledge, people 'recognize' good art. And this is what everyone feels in Casey Frey's video; you can't really put your finger on what it is, but to best describe it is to call it 'magnetic'. You just have to watch, listen, feel
This the type of thing where you ask the creator all these intense questions and he just goes, “Nah I was just fucking around.”
Honestly, it’s a brilliant and tentative allegory for the Id, Ego, and Superego of Freudian psychology.
At the beginning, the id, a representation for our baser instincts begins to act inexplicably in a way the the Superego, which values order and normality, sees as “dumb”.
The ego then emerges and wrests control of the situation, channeling the energy of the id in a heathy manner, and showing the superego that nothing is truly wrong.
I believe the face you can see the superego make as they take their glasses off is one of astonishment over the fact that this seemingly meaningless impulse can be used positively, with the final dismissive gesture simply being their acknowledgement that their micromanaging isn’t necessary.
This film needs to be archived by the library of congress. I know many people (including myself) who plan to write our film thesis/dissertation on this truly important work of the 21st century.
Also note the fact his ‘good force’ or what-have-you character, pauses for a moment to dance in tune with ‘worker Casey’
That’s some great self choreography/editing
I know this might be a small thing, but one of the only times when the camera DOES move with the 'hater' one is when he's shocked when the guy first starts, like it jumps back with him. I like to imagine that there's that spark of "ah, those dumb people... but...." in there too that kinda does get a small fraction of excited by it
This dude has another gem, which is called "There was a party". It's a meme, but has a weird storyline that can be interpreted in many ways, which was probasbly an accident, but also has clever editing and surprisingly good acting. This dude and his buddies are def talented.
i knew there was a reason i have to watch this video about 900 times before i can live the rest of my day peacefully
I think about this video a lot, it tells such a beautiful story about accepting yourself and rejecting all the hate. What makes it so good is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways by different people, it’s why this video is a cinematic masterpiece
Finally, Casey Frey getting the recognition that he deserves
I've been raving about this video for so long i'm so glad someone actually took it seriously
Truly a man enjoying his craft, when he recognizes brilliance and talent in the most obscure places.
I get goosebumps every time I see that video. Thanks for going through it. It's not that I needed this to appreciate it more, but I always like to be remembered that it exists. This analysis was very much needed
That’s what I have been trying to say. While we know it’s a masterpiece, we don’t realise how GREAT the video really is until we see people trying to recreate it.
Casey Frey is an amazing actor, his work with Cherdleys is unmatched.
this video is a cinematic masterpiece
IM SO GLAD UR GIVING IT THE PRAISE IT DESERVES . imo it's THE shortform video platform masterpiece ijs
I thought this was gonna be a meme but holy shit everything you said was spot on and things I never noticed. I like to criticize film making a lot while paying attention to editing and shot composition, but this video is so fun and silly I actually never looked at it critically. It really is masterfully crafted.
I've rewatched this masterpiece about 100 times. I go back to it from time to time.
It is truly an internet Masterpiece.
It's not just a good dance video. It's also great cinematography what makes this so interesting to watch in combination with the song.
I just realised the camera movement is a film equivalent of stretching and deformation in the in betweens in animation. That whipping extends and emphasises everything and does it soooo stylishly. Love it.
This man saw a dance video and went: "this is amazing"
Woah! Super cool! Repeating the motion of a dance move as he flips off the hater is a action move used to give punches more energy. Super cool to see that used here to add energy to the shot.
class struggle engulfs every aspect of our conscious being
Now this shows a true appreciation of the art. Many would have the entire internet thrown in the bin, but without it we wouldn't see these snapshots of pure cinema.
this is the essay we all needed about a masterpiece made truly ahead of its time
I love this, I have been obsessed with this video for ages and it's feels so cool to see others appreciate it's beauty
not to mention when 'restrained' frey says "ur dumb", the camera zooms in so slightly on the second word. also the first time we see the 'unleashed' frey, his eyes dart back and forth completely in time with the music. so much is synched.
I no joke didnt think of it in this artistic way but now that i do it genuinely is one of the most phenomenal dance videos out there, unironically great
We've come to the point where we're analyzing Casey Frey videos like they're arthouse films. I love the internet.
This is one of the most beautiful interpretations.
It's one of the things bollywood has masterfully developed in their movies
Frey is something like a mad genius when it comes to making these types of videos (and also seemingly in his own life), and no one seems to have noticed yet..
is this the sequel to "The art of over analyzing"??
The film analysis is bang on, as usual. The sociological analysis, not so much.
I loved that video since the day it came out but never did I think that this channel would would do an in depth analysis and I’m loving it!

I love how this isn't just a meme analysis of a funny video. Everything said here is 100% true.
This is easily one of the best viral videos I’ve ever seen. It’s genuinely effffing amazing.
I thought it was a break-up from a toxic relationship and finding loving energy in another relationship.
Absolutely love the attention you gave this.
