Very personal to me. My wonderful wife of 50 years and I would vacation in Key Largo back in the early 1970's. We made love on the beach in the evenings and fell in love with each other there. Also Humphrey Bogart was one of my favorite actors. This song really brings it all home to me. Thank you Bertie Higgins.

My first grown up love and my first real broken heart. I loved that man like I've never loved anyone else. His ex came back and they remarried for their kid's sake. I never really got over him. He's been gone now for a few years. I still miss him and everytime I hear this song, those beautiful memories flood in of that winter together in that old house with the big fireplace. ❤

Love this song forever! My mom had a paper route in early 80s delivering Atlanta paper and i would drive around with her this song was on radio all the time. Great memories.
Greetings Bertie. I love this song. I played several times a day while on vacation in Key Largo. It was the perfect song to listen to in the morning, then at lunch , dinner & on the water watching the gorgeous Florida Keys sunsets on the sunset cruises. This song is a timeless classic that will new grow old. The African Queen boat docked in Key Largo has be repaired & renovated. Now it is able to sail again for couples cruises.
It was 1982, I was lying on the living room floor with the most beautiful girl in the world and we were falling in love to this song. A few months later I was taking her to the beach to ask her to marry me. A fateful tyre defect caused the car to crash. She was taken from this world and my life turned upside down. My life moved on. I have been married now for more than 30 years and have 4 wonderful adult children. But I am sitting here in the dark listening to this song and I feel her arms around me. My first real love, gone way way too soon. My heart breaks with the memory.
Wife and I married 37 years now spent a vacation traveling up and down the keys 25 years ago. Scuba diving, deep sea fishing, kayaking and just stopping at random places. I recently told her I would like to drive the keys again with her. Pretend we're on that trip. Probably never happen as her health is not good and seems to be slipping away from me with each passing day. But this song always takes me back. Thx Berti.

I was living in South Florida in 1982 when this song was popular. I remember this playing on the radio of my 1980 Monte Carlo while driving to pick up a gorgeous blonde with green eyes and a smile that left me speechless that I had somehow talked into going out with me. She really was something. Still is, she's watching Netflix in our 'family room' right now, I married her in Miami in 1984. I smile whenever I hear this song.
This song has always been a favorite of mine. I told my husband I wanted to go to Key Largo and play it forever. Sadly, he passed, 2 days after our 25th Anniversary. That was 3 years ago. I will make it to Key Largo, even if it's only in my dreams ✨️ 🎶 Thank you Bertie, for keeping hope and romance alive, every time this song is played. ❤️🎹🎼
So sorry to hear about your loss--at least the two of you got to celebrate your 25th anniversary before it happened, although I suppose by that point your husband might not have been capable of "celebrating" anything (??). Again, my condolences. 😢
This song was playing over and over again when I gave my fiance her engagement ring at Pal's Cabin in West Orange, NJ. I would give anything to go back to that point in my life.

I graduated HS in 82 and did all the ,80s things . The music was the best If you didn't grow up in the 70s and loved thru the 80s then you missed everything😢
I love the 80s music the order I get and the more my kids and people make fun of me because of my hairstyle '80s never left me and I never left the '80s I don't care what your year it is
I'm just quietly listening to all the songs I grew up with in my yard now, wish u could be here and enjoy them with everyone who grew up loving these Beautiful songs.
The only love of my life, my husband, died a few days ago.We met in 1982..Life goes by too fast and it's gone..Hold tight to each other and don't be afraid to give your whole heart, when they come along. You'll know.
My condolences. Love goes by like a warm Sunday afternoon. I’ll keep holding on till the day I have to let go. Thanks for the reminder that this ships sails fast so enjoy the ride
I was a South Florida resident when this song exploded. It was all over radio, both on Top-40 stations and adult-contemporary. 13 million youtube views says this song has some staying power!
I had just moved to Florida about the time this came out, and then it was followed by Miami Vice being a huge hit. Jimmy Buffett was still big at the time too, it reminded me a lot of his "Come Monday", kind of a similar laid back sound. Those early 80's seemed like such easy, breezy days compared to now. People weren't quite sure how to follow the excitement of the 70's, and everybody was just kind of laid back, letting the 80's settle into place, wondering what path things would take next. It felt like a great time to be in Florida and soaking up the tropical vibe on the beaches, and at the tiki bars and cocktail lounges ( remember the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?), it was the perfect atmosphere for it. This song was kind of one of the last of the songs that still had a 70's sound to it, after that it was all about the new wave and the British bands hitting it big. I will always love this song and thrilled to see so many others feel the same.
Drunk in a hotel bathroom at 3am and it wasn't until my wife banged on the door that I realize I had sung this masterpiece for the 8th time at the top of my lungs great times lol
This probably won’t be seen by anyone but my Grandma, who grew up in Tarpon Springs FL where Bertie grew up said she knew him fairly well. She told us he used to go over her house and hangout with her and her dad every so often. She got married and moved and forgot about him for a number of years till she said she heard him on the radio and couldn’t believe it! She is the reason I got to know his music! I always was so fascinated how she knew him! Anyways she’s passed away now and every time I hear this song I think of her❤️Miss her very much.
I remember when this song came out. I couldn't get enough of it. That was a long time ago, and I still come back to it here or on itunes. Absolutely timeless. Here's lookin' at you, Bertie.
This song takes me back to 1993.. My husband took me to Key Largo for the first time. We did have it all back then but we took it for granted and thought it would last forever. I'd give anything to go back there with him one more time...
I feel the same about taking life for granted. I don't know how to enjoy it until it's a long passed memory. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? I visited Key Largo back in the 90's with my former wife. We loved it and it was very beautiful at the state park there. Our baby is now in her 30's, was always with us on trips. Great memories.
@@mabeleem4432 Yes, I just watched the video of Luke tearing up his room on the boat holding Laura's pink dress, screaming & crying, I am still crying. I had to come and listen to this song, I usually listen to it about 10 times in a row. Luke & Laura Forever. 💕💕💕💕💕
Wow, what a story! Thanks for sharing that, as a singer myself I'm very touched to know a song could mean that much to someone. It must have had some deep meaning for him, even if it might have been just about the sound of it really soothing him in some way. I've had songs I loved where just the sound of it really got to my emotions.
Your music didn't shock your parents? Come on. Music breaks down barriers. Ours did and now theirs is. Maybe if we weren't so bad they wouldn't have to work so hard to shock us. Ever think about that?
@@michelewalburn4376 No. You're wrong. Forget Rap and Hip Hop music with its constant race to the bottom on vile lyrics (I'm looking at you Cardi B and your disgusting WAP song). But when you see today's radio friendly pop artists constantly dropping F-bombs (I'm looking at you Olivia Rodrigo) in their explicit versions of so many of their songs (even freaking Taylor Swift has jumped on this terrible trend) ...that is the difference. Except for very rare cases, swearing in songs was just not a thing in past generations. Now it seems difficult for some artists to avoid doing it. And, like their stupid tattoos, vaping, and body piercings, it seems that cussing in music is also a big part of today's "rebel youth" counterculture. And unfortunately, these are the people whom todays' 6, 7 and 8 year olds aspire to be and will repeat what they see and hear.
Dear Mr Higgins just wanted to let you know I am a disc jockey and have a large vinyl collection. And your music is among that collection. Great Work!!
I was young and a new bride. This was our song. Little did I know that it wouldn't last. That was 20 years ago. My heart died when it was over. My life went on quite well but no more love.
You listen to these songs you don't have to see the world as it falls....go back to years before and feel the piece. Me and my grandkids listen to this song every week here in Key Largo
Who down votes the Key Largo song?! And growing up near the Keys in south Dade County in 1981 when this song hit was a special time. It even inspired my oldest sister and her new husband, who married in 1981, to honeymoon in Key Largo.
Bertie once supported himself as a sponge diver, and began his career in show business at the age of twelve as a ventriloquist. No wonder his voice is so unique as he would have built up lung capacity. He was also a drummer for Tommy Roe. So yes he had it all and made the most of it co-writing this song and making it one of the most memorable songs of all time. Once you hear it he hooks you like a Tarpon so that you have to keep playing it over and over again flooding you with memories of that special love you had and maybe lost and your life was never the same again.
This was one of my dad's favorite songs. Now that he's passed away, I feel like it helps me remember him, while helping me hold on to the nostalgia of my childhood. Love this!
Married 50+ years. We went to Maimi in the 90s and drove on highway 1 all the way to Key West to eat. Stopped at Key Largo just to take pictures. We were so happy just to be there. We were fans of Bogie and Bacall! He is been gone 7 years but these songs keeps him here with me. ❤️❤️
Bertie, I was the music director and midday DJ in South Carolina when Cat Family Records released this song. We played this thing in rotation even after MCA records wanted us to send it back because they were re-releasing it. The listeners were more important and they wanted to hear the song, sooo... we replaced the record when the newer release came in. Years later and living on Amelia Island Florida, you and your band came and played at the Shrimp Festival. Great memories, man. Thank you.
This song was the soundtrack to my first marriage falling apart. I even remember quoting ".... I love you still, baby this can't be the end". Bittersweet memories
Played this song many times on the radio during my alleged radio career in the great northwest. There was always something special about this song. It just touches you . Now I'm an old man with my clock winding down. I hope this song is never forgotten..life passes you in the blink of an eye
I was a DJ back then too. Just as The Pina Colada Song finally fizzled this one came out. We called it housewife music. Ah, but guess what was on the horizon in 1983? "Ride Like The Wind".....ugh.
When I was a teenager in the late 80s this kind of music would come on the radio and I hated it. In the late 90s there was girl in college I dated who loved this stuff, and I ended up listening to it just to spend time with her. It didn't take long for the music to grow on me. As I approach 50 this stuff is about all I listen to - it just feels good. Bertie is one of my favorites -the aesthetics in this video are so nice. Many thanks!
Unforgettable moments.... the eighties... "Key Largo"... pure romantic top class, both lyrically and musically including a song with an international message for young and old. Bertie Higgins... pure youth sentiment...!
I listen to this song, with tears in my eyes because I miss my first real love. We truly had it all, just like Bogie and Bacall. Even though I’m happily married to a woman that I truly love, nothing can ever compare to the love me and my first true love shared
I know how you feel. I was in love with a woman who was married with a child. She and her husband were in a tumultuous relationship that it is a matter of time it would end in a divorce. I tried to wait it out instead being a homewrecker. Then surprisingly, she had another child with her husband. I was in my early 30s and I thought perhaps I was wrong, their marriage would last. I decided it was time to look elsewhere I am not getting any younger. Soon I met another woman who would end up to be my wife. I gave a wedding invitation card to her, and she said she's planning to get a divorce. I couldn't leave my fiance. Soon she ended her marriage. With two children, she remarried to a wealthy man who was at least 18 years older than she was. This was over 20 years ago.
My dad died 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I used to sing this with him

I was a South Florida resident when this song exploded. It was all over radio, both on Top-40 stations and adult-contemporary. 13 million youtube views says this song has some staying power!
and the bumper to bumper traffic all the way to the key west.
Ask him about when he used to sing in the bar in Illinois back in the day;-)
Yep, heavy rotation on JOY 107 in the 80s🤣
Drunk in a hotel bathroom at 3am and it wasn't until my wife banged on the door that I realize I had sung this masterpiece for the 8th time at the top of my lungs great times lol
This song gets better as time goes by😊💽❤👍
Love this song

This probably won’t be seen by anyone but my Grandma, who grew up in Tarpon Springs FL where Bertie grew up said she knew him fairly well. She told us he used to go over her house and hangout with her and her dad every so often. She got married and moved and forgot about him for a number of years till she said she heard him on the radio and couldn’t believe it! She is the reason I got to know his music! I always was so fascinated how she knew him! Anyways she’s passed away now and every time I hear this song I think of her❤️Miss her very much.
That is so sweet great story
We see it. :D that's awesome!
I was just trying to piece together the lyrics. Didn't know who sung this song. "Just like [Lauren] Bacall. " but it's Bogie. LOL oops.
I remember when this song came out. I couldn't get enough of it. That was a long time ago, and I still come back to it here or on itunes. Absolutely timeless. Here's lookin' at you, Bertie.
A Classic
YES INDEED!👍
Awe the 80's beautiful!
God love you
Lol I’m not sure I remember it coming out because I would have been a baby but I still love coming back to it. A classic
Love “Key Largo“ the movie and Bogart and Bacall . Love the song and the video.
I remember watching it with my mother. She loved Humphrey Bogart.
Oh my goodness what a handsome man!! Love this song even in July 2024
2024 and still loving this song. Thank you Bertie.💜💜💜
The 80's WE had it all. All those great songs 👫
Takes me right back to 1982 --- when I was in 7th grade and loving my Atari 2600 game system !!
Got that right ❤😎👍
And the feel was different. People were more real. Maybe it was the mindset... cause i haven't changed.
@@billbelzek6748 yes! Combat, river raid, so many classics.
Not only is this an exceptional song, the story behind the song is special, and for me, it brings back fond memories - a special era.
I knew some what about it just can't remember. It's been a while

Thanks for posting. It brings back good memories.
My dad loved this tune so much he asked me to make him a cassette of it on repeat. He'd listen to that 120 minute tape for hours back in '82.
Perhaps this song reminds him of a love relationship he once had.
So nice of you to do that
Wow, what a story! Thanks for sharing that, as a singer myself I'm very touched to know a song could mean that much to someone. It must have had some deep meaning for him, even if it might have been just about the sound of it really soothing him in some way. I've had songs I loved where just the sound of it really got to my emotions.
@@whyicare I'll say that he was a HUGE Boogie and Bacall fan. Yes, he found the tune to be very nostalgic. Thank you.
Before music was profane. What a classy and classic song!
I agree. Ahhh the good ole days ❤️😉🎶
"wrapped around each other" is profane! Society will always change and the music will change to keep in step.
Your music didn't shock your parents? Come on. Music breaks down barriers. Ours did and now theirs is. Maybe if we weren't so bad they wouldn't have to work so hard to shock us. Ever think about that?
yes music changes through time, today's music has morphed into feces
My Mom's favorite song. She would play it over and over again. 💜🎼💜

Its now 2023 and I could never get enough of this song. Reminds me of someone. Blake i will never forget you!❤😊
Who down votes the Key Largo song?!
And growing up near the Keys in south Dade County in 1981 when this song hit was a special time. It even inspired my oldest sister and her new husband, who married in 1981, to honeymoon in Key Largo.
Why would anyone NOT love this song. Great memories.
Jack, they got no heart and spend every second of their pathetic lives ALONE with their right hand. No discrimination from me ,left hand too.
Born in 1950. Served 26 months Vietnam flying helicopters and just never stopped loving this song!

I too have beautiful memories of this song
This was one of my dad's favorite songs. Now that he's passed away, I feel like it helps me remember him, while helping me hold on to the nostalgia of my childhood. Love this!
Married 50+ years. We went to Maimi in the 90s and drove on highway 1 all the way to Key West to eat. Stopped at Key Largo just to take pictures. We were so happy just to be there. We were fans of Bogie and Bacall! He is been gone 7 years but these songs keeps him here with me. ❤️❤️
2020 still sailing away to key largo

I hope you found someone to help you pick up the pieces and to love again. It's very hard to find I know but I hope you did.
This takes me back to my younger year with a sweetheart that lasted 56 years.
It brings tears of joy such fond memories.
Music takes you right back to those precious intangible moments you ache for.
We all have a soft spot in our heart for our first love that was a time of innocence
This Song is 40 Years old!! I was 20 years old in 1982 and I feel young everytime I heard it again ☺️
How many times has been memory been tickled by this song. It's one of the best ever songs.
2024 I woke up with this song in my head!❤
Close your eyes and it takes you back to the 1980s - love it
Unforgettable moments.... the eighties... "Key Largo"... pure romantic top class, both lyrically and musically including a song with an international message for young and old. Bertie Higgins... pure youth sentiment...!
I love her singing 🎉
My uncle did that. Married someone other than his 1st and greatest true love. Weird. (Only jokin'! 🤔Still puzzling tho').
This song is a true love story, today in 2024 I am still listening to it and I like it a lot.
