The Phantom - Origin Of Forgotten Pulp Superhero - Explored - History Of Ghost Who Walks!

- Much before heroes like Superman zoomed into the world of comics, there lived and breathed several superheroes who graced newspaper comics. One of the earliest was “The Phantom” who also went by names ‘The Ghost Who Walks’ and ‘The Man Who Never Dies’. The creator of Phantom, Lee Falk, got the inspiration for this purple superhero from various historical and mythological legends like that of Zorro, Tarzan, King Arthur, Robin Hood, etc. He was a pioneer in the world of superheroes, with features like white eyes behind his mask or wearing underpants over his pants. Later, several superheroes namely the Green Lantern and Batman also had white eyes without pupils, and we all know how Superman wears his underpants. Phantom made his first appearance in the year 1936, but later, several well-known comics like Marvel and DC Comics also published comics based entirely on him, or TV shows that depicted him. In 1996, Billy Zane starred in a live-action adaptation named “The Phantom”. Phantom is a character whose backstory, powers and personality seems to be the inspiration behind many famous superheroes and definitely deserves a film that justifies his stature.

The superhero who started it all.Long live the Ghost who walks.
Except he was predated by The Shadow by about a decade.
As a kid in Sweden, I was a member of the Phantom club, remember when I got the Phantom ring in the mail. All was good in the world :) great video of a truly underrated superhero.
Glöm Fantomen grottan som fanns På nöjesparken i Eskilstuna 😁😁
That's really cool you brought back a memory i didn't know I had Im not sure where I got it but I had a ring too!
@@lectornox hihi, it was awesome...

" The ghost who walks, the man who never dies.........The Phantom !!!".
I loved this movie as a kid Billy Zane should've been a bigger deal.
Absolutely. Totally underrated movie and it's star.
He lost his hair
He would have been had he not gone bald smh that's a no no in hollywood
The costume of the Phantom was right on and saw it in the theater and have it on bluray. I enjoyed the film but many people today never heard of him but thanks to comics it influenced another generation. I used to follow the newspaper comic every day .
Bruce Campbell was a 2nd pick for the lead role. Campbell could have been a much bigger movie star but he made bad choices 🎭 & hes not a super nice guy in real life....
He is far from forgotten in India. Phantom is quite famous in India.
Not anymore, the comic sales have died
The “underpants” thing is actually a reference to the “strong men” at carnivals and whatnot. They wore the onesies and what appeared to be a dark pair of underwear on the outside of their “uniforms” in contrast to their lighter tights.
There's more to it than that tho.. something most people in modern times don't quite realize, is the actual reason for the outside shorts or trunks. A better term for them would be modesty shorts haha.
The creators of these heros costume design intentions , where that the characters are wearing tights, like circus and strongman performers, but also already worn by BALLET artists and if you have every seen a ballet , you would understand why the trunks over the tights would make sense..
It's so we didn't have to look at the characters balls 😳
I remember reading the original paper back novels as a kid! The Phantom, along with the likes of Conan, and Doc Savage, were the building blocks for my appreciation of sci-fi and fantasy genres! Zane did a fantastic job as the Phantom and it's a shame there never was a sequel! Cheers!
I have no idea what these other guys are sayin, but same here-The building blocks of manhood INDEED..
Same here!!! I read this book in middle school, and I LOVED IT!!!!
You forgot about Flash Gordan , and Buck Rodgers .
@Shin Shaman No it was at a time Superhero movie's wasn't the thing.
@Shin Shaman it is actually fun in all it‘s cheesy style.
Love this movie! I grew up watching it! It's one of those 90's superhero films no one ever talks about. The trailer for the movie had the most memorable music by Jerry Goldsmith, which was then used in Judge Dredd and Lost In Space.
LOVED THIS MOVIE AS A KID!!!! WATCHED DEFENDERS AND 2040 AS A KID ALSO. GOD I WISH THEY WOULD GIVE PHANTOM AND THE SHADOW A WELL DESERVED UPDATE
The is how I imagine it. Start with a Flash Gordon movie. Follow that with a Phantom movie. Then do Mandrake the Magician. Finally, have them team up in a Defenders Of The Earth film.
Yes yes yes Amen like-minded individual
The Phantom character, history and stories are filled with great action, mysteries and various adventures.
It is very interesting that Lee Falk's creation is commonly described as THE first masked comic-book hero, but have since the 1970's and up till modern days been A LOT more loved and respected in Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Danmark, Finland), Turkey, India and Australia before his own home country of creating in the U.S.A.
So much that Lee Falk before he passed away lent most creation decisions to be made by Swedish/Danish "Egmont Publishing" to make sure
The Phantom and his future will live on. And they have done a darn great job doing so. In the 90's and early 00's they published a spin-off series titled:
"The Phantom Chronicles" where they explored past generations of Phantoms before the 36th one Kit Walker we all know.
They where well written and explored lots of historical events in his history and where certain comic legends came from. LOVED THEM!!!
Imagine if they could make a TV-series of these Phantom Chronicles - they would be epic and introduce a new generation of Phantom fans.
would love to see a defenders of the earth mythology and show review
Same here. I want to know what universe they ended up in... and if they can even unite in the same universe since then.
When I was a kid this movie came out at the drive-in theatre in our town. If you went to see it on opening night you got a free Phantom ring. That thing was my prized possession for years
I remember really wanting to like it but I didn't, just like the rocketeer, and the shadow and I was familiar with all those characters before the movie
All I remember from that movie was a dude getting stabbed through his eyes with a microscope and skulls. . . That microscope scene. . . God I still think that was such an awesomely creative method of impairing someone
We got phantom tshirts at our town, I would have rathered the ring
Mine too
My sister was working at a video store when the VHS can out. She gave me one of the promotional Skull rings they received. That was a great surprise!
Every time I see Shang Tsu I expect him to say, "Your Soul is Miiiiinneee!!"
I'd love to see an in-depth video essay, like this one, on *_The Shadow._* 🙂

I'll check them out 😃
In the Defenders Of The Earth canon, the Phantom gains super strength whenever he recites a magical incantation.
Tbh I was really not a fan of him having powers in that show. To me it kinda took away from what made him so intriguing and unique.
Power of ten tigers.
Damn. Talk about nostalgia. I remember watching The Phantom movie as kid. Awesome movie.
Billy Zane was so good in this role I thought he was Jeff Goldblum
That would be fun.
Whoa that's one hell of a secret identity
I remember and liked the Phantom movie... I think I was one of the few people to see it in the theaters.
So bad it's good, just like The Shadow
I saw it in theaters too and I was hoping it would get a sequel. Unfortunately, it didn't. I hope The Phantom gets another movie, someday.
I saw it in the theater. I was 21 or 22. I'm old.
Do the Shadow next please.
Yes!
The only superhero that made a onesie look cool.
Like The Shadow, The Phantom was a decent movie but both of these movies need to be remade
Needs a high concept series with each season in a different time.
Since Netflix lost all its Marvel properties, that would be a great idea!
Like Highlander.
Nothing is better than good old pulp comics
Not forgotten. Phantom is still popular here in Scandinavia.
I love that movie! I watched it so many times as a kid. I wanted a purple suit so badly.
This was another one of those movies that I thought would’ve done better than it did. I thought the same with The Shadow, The Spirit, and The Rocketeer. I still wonder what this movie could’ve been if Spielberg did it. Thanks for posting.
My first introduction to the Phantom in the 80s was through the Indrajal comics here in India. As a kid, all I wanted were his two rings. Oh, how I begged and pleaded with my parents... never got it though :))
Thank you for this video! Brings back great memories. Now, if only someone would make a Phantom movie on par with the Dark Knight trilogy...
If you want them today, u can get them at arroba silver. I got mine there a few years ago
UNA EXCELENTE PELÍCULA LLENA DE ACCIÓN, EMOCIÓN Y AVENTURAS DEL "FANTASMA" QUE NOS HIZO RECORDAR Y EVOCAR AQUELLAS SERIALES DE LA DÉCADA DE LOS AÑOS 50, EN QUE NOS HACÍAN PALPITAR Y SALTAR DE NUESTROS ASIENTOS EN CADA UNO DE SUS CAUTIVANTES Y EMOTIVOS CAPÍTULOS. The Phantom is my favorite after Batman, it was great to receive the Sunday newspaper for the comics, and The Phantom. Mandrake was good too.
In defenders of the Earth phantom did have powers. He could summon the strength of 10 tigers
Cool
There was a cartoon show and he said that i every episode. I can still hear it.
I remember watching the Phantom movie as a kid and really enjoying it, while knowing nothing about the character's history.
Learning more about him over the years has been a trip.
You forgot to mention that he has two rings, one with a mark of the skull which gets engraved in the faces of villain's. The other ring was a mark of Phantom protection and he would give the mark on their hands so bad people will not mess with them, I loved the concept. Great video.
And the good luck/protection ring was worn on the left hand. Why? Because (as explained in the comics), closer to the heart! :-)
I really enjoyed this movie, and think it's very underrated. I hope it gets rediscovered somehow, this and "The Shadow". The film "The Phantom" was written by Jeff Boam (r.i.p.), who also wrote "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", and I felt it showed. If you missed this movie before, seek out out. I really miss the superhero movies of the 90's.
One of my favourite Phantom stories, was called, Wanted For Murder. A story with a fake Phantom murdering criminals & The Phantom has a week to stop the imposter.
I would love a new movie or TV series.
Fond memories of this as a kid. Always thought they'd make more.
Great video! I love, love, love The Phantom, he's amazing and deserves more respect!
The movie was ok. But the animated series Phantom 2040 that was the best. I wanted to kick Beaudelaire the evil cat.
Phantom 2040 is made the same people who released eon flux
@@Chervemania Ah, the elongated bodies and slightly unnatural movements by Peter Chung. I got pulled in by Phantom, but Aeon Flux made me a fan.
Also, the opening theme for the show was totally killer.
My parents read the comics, so I did to & really enjoyed them.
When I was older I played Rugby Union for my local team, The Phantoms. We wore purple jerseys, our club house was the Skull Cave with Phantom murals painted on the walls. My sister played for the women's team, The Diana's.
There are quite a number of sporting clubs in Australia that have taken on the name Phantom.
The Phantom was the one of the first and one of the best of what has come to be known as comic book super hero's.
Oh wow. I loved the DC comic that showed a different origin with him being beaten, thrown below deck and left for dead. It was a captivating read and he does succeed in getting free and taking back the ship. That was a hell of a mini series. The 96 movie was great too. No one should miss it.
I would definitely check it out.A while back I read The Last Phantom from Dynamite and it was a great series .If they ever plan to reboot the Phantom they should adapt that series.
@@elizabethmolino8262 I'm going to check that out! Thanks! This video re-sparked my interest in the character and desire to read more adventures.
There is one episode where Phantom is captured and chained by a Prince from the misty mountains and made to do manual labor. He finally breaks that chain -- that chain hands down on his skull throne to remind me of those days.
HE IS THE HERO OF HEROS THE BEST COMICBOOK WAS DONE BY HARVY HITS THANKS FOR THIS HISTORY WALK THRUE.
Phantom is the best hero ever. I use to love getting the comics as a kid and the movie was great not sure what people expected in 96 but it's was a awesome movie
I love Billy Zane's "The Phantom".
Like. Thanks. I first saw Phantom comics in my childhood in 1959 in Rangoon (Myanmar) exactly in "India Illustrated Weekly". He was the first superhero i got familiar, long before Superman and Batman. I was impressed and even draw a few pictures of Phamtom with color pencils. For instance, a picture influenced by the comics where Phantom throws thru the air villain Bruno, a bearded blond giant wearing leopard skins. I was (and still i am, naturally) neither a Burmese nor an Indian, but a European diplomat's son stationed there and I was taken to a local barber-shop. I still have a few issues of "India Illustrated Weekly" of that time stacked somewhere at home and maybe they contain some Phantom comics. But I am not sure. At almost 70 it is a hard task to burrow thru all that old stuff I inherited from my parents.
The Phantom movie wasn't bad not the best but me and my kid's love to watch for a good giggle followed by the Rockertier and Flash Gordon.
Please add the shadow to your list ty :)
@@johnjamesleahy4065 thanks forgot about that one
@@dabigork :) !!
I saw Phantom in the theater at the Chinese Mandarin theater in Hollywood. I still have the Phantom skull ring they gave out as a promotion. Fun times.
Whoever wrote the script for this retrospective sure loves the word, "comics".
this and aleck baldren's the shadow make a great afternoon movie day
The Phantom was one of my childhood heroes.
Not forgotten, never forgotten I actually remember the movie and the Defenders of the Earth series.
Wish I knew more so...
The Phantom DID have powers. He could call on the strength, speed and agility of multiple animals. He was one of the main characters in the defenders of the earth cartoons
That Phantom wasnt the real deal
@@badmrbox That phantom was mentioned in the video, its canon
@@markrobinson224 All the 21 Phantoms were normal people. DoE spiced things up.
Agree..this video is wrong
He doesn't have powers in the books
The Phantom was one of my favorite comics strips in the Sunday newspaper. I always looked forward to it. It's interesting to note that no mention was made of the 14 novels of the Phantom that Lee Falk wrote, published by Avon in the early 1970's.
Yes, those novels are really, really good! Especially the first one where there are details of how Phantom came to USA, his schooling, etc.
There are also those Little Big Books on Phantom -- about 12 cm tall, but thick.
For some reason when I was a kid nobody could tell me that that wasn’t Jeff Goldblum playing the Phantom in the 1996 movie lol. I could’ve sworn for sworn to you that it was him playing that role. I honestly forgot all about this movie from my childhood until recently.
The Phantom is still fairly popular here in Australia. Even most mainstream newsstands/newsagents have Phantom comics.
Same thing in Sweden heck the 1000 number was recently released
I got a few Phantom coffee mugs and birthday greeting cards from 'Monkeys of Melbourne' when eBay had recently started. I also bought a 200+ comics collection from an Australian collector.
@@Groza_Dallocortwhat do you mean 1000 the latest number in 2023 is something in the 1780’s since the start in sweden 1950.
@@breakingthelaw7974 I think it was 1000 number of only swedish made adventures in that case
@@Groza_Dallocort yes it must be something like that because the original phantom comics in sweden were from the original Lee Falk run and after that they used stories from the Italian run of the phantom because the destributor in italy had a licence to create their own stories. So Sweden took them and remade then to fit the swedish market so 1000 of only swedish made comics could be correct.
The Phantom was a favorite of mine. The movie is underrated.
The generation of phantoms-thing is clever, many of the best adventures were historical. Another useful thing is he sometimes "walks the streets like an ordinary man" (Mr Walker) so the angles to come up with stories is infinite.
"There are times when Phantom leaves the jungle, and walks the street like an ordinary man. This is one of those times". Almost always followed by someone trying to ambush him unsuccessfully in a dark alley or a fight in a bar (where is orders milk for himself and water for Devil, his dog, I mean wolf).
*I love the comics and the still ongoing comic strip of The Phantom.*
The phantom is huge in the nordic countries! Perhaps not the most complex character, but sometimes just a pure good hero is what one need!
Don't you guys have Phantom suit in blue color? I have rotating screen savers of Phantoms and one of them is 'Phantomen' -- Fran Lila Valnad
@@0anant0 yes, blue Fantomen
Mr Walker, The Ghost Who Walks, Guardian Of The Eastern Dark, Friend Of Pygmies. I have a Phantom Good Mark tattoo and have collected enough paraphernalia and comics over the years that when I got in contact with Frew Publishing, I was told that not many people today could afford what it is worth.
The Avon novel made quite an impression on me as a young teen in the early '70s
As a kid to an adult , I used to follow the Phantom in the newspaper comics in the weekly and Sunday papers .As other classic comics that I liked .
Loved The Movie The Phantom.
Thanks for the review
Liked the movie. Also, liked the TV movie with the tech-gear, parkour Phantom.
I still have my metal phantom ring I got when the movie with Zane came out. I'm mad it doesnt fit. Sucks being small kid once. Also in the movie with Zane they actually made reference to his original costume as one of his ancestors. Fun fact though; the exterior of the playboy mansion was actually filmed for the 1996 film.
They made it 'open' in the back -- would cause a painful 'pinch' if you hit your hand accidently while wearing it.
As far as the fact number 1 goes Lee Falk intended for Phantom's costume to be gray (as he is the ghost who walks) put the later colour prints made him purple. Falk didn't like this at first but later accepted the palette swap.
Moonstone Comics Phantom book had a full Trade paperback devoted to the story of the first Phantom. The was written by Ben Rabb. I am not sure of the spelling of the last name. That story was the most detailed telling of the origin of the first Phantom ever written. It won awards for everything about it. I own a copy of it and consider it one of my favorite books. The Phantom like the Shadow has always been an under appreciated comic book hero. The Billy Zane movie never got the kind of preadvertising that other movies got leading to the poor box office. I would like to see another try for both the Phantom and the Shadow taken with full backing to make them successful.
The Avon novel by Lee Falk about 21st Phantom is also really good -- talks about how the young Kit when to America, etc
"Who ever get scent of the Phantom socks, will be going to be die"! Old jungle saying....
I remember loving to watch the cartoon show as a kid. I see lots of potential from the movie though. I think you even forgot the live action mini series.
I wish this video touched on the Defenders of the Earth cartoon's version of Phantom having abnormal abilities/powers. A conversation about why the Defenders of the earth created a different version of Phantom having powers need to be in this review.
This brings back my childhood days
Phanthom 2040 is the Great grandson of the current phanthom.. His great Aunt Eloise is in the series. She constantly moaned about how she was better than her brother at everything but he got to be the phanthom and not her. Auntie had issues.
I was a major fan of both the Phantom and Mandrake the Magician, both of which our local paper ran.
When the Billy Zane film was released, I was greatly looking forward to it.
Impressed it was set as a period piece, not just modernized, what thrilled me was its opening title card, _For those who came in late_ as this was at the start of each new story in the daily comics: a story would run for several weeks, and properly conclude, the next day they would run the quick "For those who came in late" (a la "Previously on... the Phantom..."), reminder of his origins.
Great video, I been a fan of the phantom for years. Also you can find shields with the phantom on them in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford in England.
The Billy zane movie is amazing.
My favourite thing is that it is a period piece.
Sadly it was never released in India.
Hollywood movies became a thing in India (that craze began with jurassic Park)
We also got Alec Baldwin as the Shadow near the same time! But Zane did this very well I wished we could have gotten a 2nd film!
He is not forgotten in Sweden. When I was a kid the Phantom (or Fantomen) was one of the most popular comics, along side donald duck. I subscribed to the comic and got a new one in the mail every friday. Good times. The stories were great too. And the lineage of fantomens were cool to explore, called chronicles. Fantomen were like our version of Batman. Fantomen is Batman but stronger. Not a better detective or more skilled in martial arts, but he is definitely stronger. Like Batman he is a peak human. But Fantomen can knock out anyone with one punch and when someone hits him it's like hitting a wall. It is truly an amazing comic, also great side comics like Thorgal and Camelot 3000.
I do wish they would make another movie about the phantom.
Do a video on his greatest adventures, or enemies.
"Better to stare into the tiger's eyes than into the cold eyes of the angry Phantom." -Old jungle saying.
I remember very old comics my father used to buy for me from street stalls and the more recent Infantino's drawings: astonishing! I was fashinated by some episodes such as dealing with "Vultures" and the immortal Gladiator.
Enjoyed 1996 movie but i can see why it underperformed at box offices: it tasted kind action comedy in an era of "serious" heroes and looked a B movie production. I know it was on purpose, a sort of revival of those "Jungle Movies" with a wrestler donning gorilla suit but non seemed to understand...
May be a remake with darker tones would work nowadays.
ME ENCANTABAN Y DELEITABA COMPRAR SUS REVISTAS O "CHISTES" DEL FANTASMA QUE NUNCA MUERE Y TODOS SUS EMOCIONANTES Y PALPITANTES CAPITULOS , SIENDO UNO DE MIS FAVORITOS EN SU LECTURA.
Awesome!I absolutely love this character along with characters like Batman, Daredevil and Moon Knight and I think they share similarities.I really appreciate you guys doing a video on him as he's among the great underrated heroes.
Trust me this character is an absolute Gem from the past. The phantom must have on of his own movie and can give a really great boost to the audience if it is released. Marvel can profit fortunes from a phantom movie ❤️
I LOVE The Phantom!!!!! I even have the HBO making of special on my RUclips channel. This movie was my introduction to the character and I still love it!!!
The Phantom doesn't need super powers, he has a pair of sweet 1911s. In .45 ACP that's really all you need.
My dad would read the Phantom to me on Sunday mornings when I was little before I was old enough to go to schoo. I have many fond memories of those moments. l
Before Superman, before Batman, before Wonder Woman and before the Avengers, there was...The Phantom.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
The Phantom is still very popular in Sweden and Scandinavia, and he is dressed in blue here.
The Phantom was also called the Gray Ghost it was intended that would be his color.
I seen the phantom and liked before i even started to watch 🤙
As a kid growing up in the 1960s I read the Phantom in the New York City Daily News Sunday paper.
The phantom is still popular in Sweden.
The comics are still published here.
This guy is the actual first color costumed superhero Superman became the modernized idea of a superhero but certainly he was not the first many people get it mixed up
I seen the Phantom in the the cartoon "Defenders of the Earth"
There is no other hero like the Pantom. His legends and hist universe is totally awesome.
But he does has many super powers also like super strength of 100 Tigers, ability to speak with the animals and more
The Phantom was always my favourite super hero!
I read allot of old Phantom comics because a bunch of my uncles collected them as kids and kept them in huge binders. I always thought the lack of powers and wealth made him a true hero.
I loved the comics when i went to school.
For me, he was more interesting than most other comic heroes.
Also i like the movie.
Since the 60s Sweden / Scandinavia has produced a thousand "Fantomen" stories of their own.
The Ghost who walks, the man who cannot die. Another title for him is 'Guardian of the Eastern Dark'
Love the videos. Thank you.
Our pleasure!
I really haven't seen the movie The Phantom. But I wish I did. Because it sounds like a lot of fun. Great vide.
A lot of comments about Defenders of the Earth. Totally remember that great cartoon show. I was born in '80 so Defenders was my introduction to the Phantom and Flash Gordon.
