Why the hell is the blu-ray so expensive?
just saw that myself. Kind of gutted.
Region A Locked :(
12:40 you dont seem to have any understanding of the Phantom character, hes Definetly NOT trying to hide himself in the jungle
Billy Zane was awesome in this role. Swanson and Zeta Jones were hot. Treat Williams was over the top and campy. But I loved that this was a period piece. Solid film.
Billy Zane is such an underrated actor! I loved him as Drake in Charmed, and in Tales from the crypt Demon knight! (I know he’s done so many different films and shows those are just my absolute favorites.)
@@leannkennett905 I named my daughter from one of his lines in Tombstone...
Zane was the real deal. Always preferred him in babyface roles to his heel turns though he'll probably be remembered for the latter.
When I was 9yrs. old. in 1958, I remember reading the comic strips of the L. A. Times and one of my favorite characters was The Phantom! One of my older brothers subscribed to the newspaper and everyday I had the opportunity to read the comic strips. To me , The Phantom was very exciting and I eagerly awaited for each day to arrive so I may have the pleasure of reading my favorite hero. When I saw the movie, it brought back wonderful memories of my childhood. Despite what anyone says, I will always like, The Ghost Who Walks!
Amen. 😁👻👊🏼
im so happy lee falk got to see this film and visit the set before he died! Great film! i dont care what people say, it holds up today and is still a classic from my youth!!
Yeah its funny this along with Dick Tracy, Rocketeer & The Shadow where all flops in there day but nowadays are held up as cult classics & viewed by many as some of the best movies of the 90's amazing how things change.
@@JayDee284 I think it’s because they were seen as stylistically outdated on release in comparison to films like The Rock and Con Air etc, but they’ve stood the test of time because they’re classically made films with traditional film making techniques that we now miss.
We’ll never get an on location shot superhero film ever again and as film buffs we know films like this are special.
I always thought it captured the period it was based on well, and stayed faithful to the source material.
@d R I agree, I love my Bruckheimer era films but those were the style of films that were pulling crowds at the time.
I think The Mummy in 99 and Zorro in late 98 probably paved the way for the films of the 2000s which were more like The Phantom.
Imagine if The Phantom came out during the pirates of the Caribbean era.
If Bruce Campbell really did screen test for the film, I would love to see those tapes.
I know at least we got him to see him play Batman from those On Star commercials☺
I agree I think he’s hilarious and seeing it would be a hoot.
I don't care what anyone says. I love this movie
I care, because I love it too.
@@haroldellis9721 too bad the blu ray is expensive and out of print. More people need to watch this movie
me too a good film to have in your dvd collection
@DavidJG you cared enough to comment and watch the video
@@821lancevance It is back in print in two weeks! Check Amazon it's $9.99
I really enjoyed this movie. I found it to be campy fun. I love the line "no smoking in the skull cave". Don't expect some dark, serious movie - enjoy it for what it is.
In my opinion Harper is the best reviewer on the internet. I love the movies he picks and I love the way he goes into detail about the production of the films, something that I haven't seen any other reviewer do. I feel like his only weak point is that he spends too much time narrating the plot's of the movies. Just a little constructive criticism Mr. Harper from a fan.
dada bubz I think Oliver is the only reviewer that realizes that modern blockbusters aren't made to be standalone. They are only part of a multimedia franchise to sell tie in soundtracks, books, games, toys and other merchandise.
That's his usp for me. I use the recap as introduction to films I'm not familiar with, and when coupled with the rest of his video can get a clear picture of its worth.
Nostalgia Critic should take a tip from Oliver Harper.
You know opinion aren't right or wrong that's why they are called OPINIONS.
He and Decker shadow are my favorite reviewers. Him because of the detail he goes into with production and Decker Shadow because he’s fair about the flaws of the films he’s watching and he’s so funny. So it’s really dependent upon what you are in the mood for a professional look into all the details of a movie or a look at the good and bad parts of a movie that will make you laugh.
Big thanks to Cinematographer David Burr for helping to confirm a number of facts on the production.
Never heard of this film till you introduced it to me (among some other films) thanks for all your hard work man. (also enjoy you commentary/speech mannerisms)
I watched this movie and loved it. All it required was you follow the 1940s sensibilities and it works. Like you said in this review about the character Indiana Jones.
I liked the way it captured The Phantom's idiosyncratic sense of humor from the early strips.
And my favorite Vampire Slayer as Diana didn't hurt either.
How about a review on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Teen Wolf & Scream?(apologies if you have done any) thanks!
Who else thinks Billy Zane would have made a great Bruce Wayne/ Batman?!
Or maybe even Superman
Or maybe even spider man
Lael Destan Billy Zane could be Lex Luthor, he would be perfect.
I can see threat coming from him, but that pooty butt kid that got the role I can only see as threatening as a high strung stalker.
@@IblewuponyourfaceIII YEEEEES! He even looks and sounds like Clancy Brown's Lex😀
I adore Treat Williams in this movie; he steals every scene he's in.
He indeed does.
He plays it so over the top, that line after he kills the mafia guy with spear kills me.
The 1990's certainly had so many great films like this, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, Darkman, The Mummy, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Mortal Combat, Dragon The Bruce Lee Story, The Mask of Zorro, Dick Tracy and so much more.
Oliver, your videos are easily the best reviews on RUclips. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man!
I am glad I didn't miss this at the theater, it was not over-the-top but it was fun to watch and still is today.
When I saw this movie when it came out, I was familiar with the character thanks to the serial newspaper comic strip in The Washington Post. I think the setting of the 1930's gave it the Golden Age of Comic books vibe. It was a great popcorn flick.
With the success of Avengers, we need a Defenders of the Earth movie.
That would be awesome.
Make standalone phantom, mandrake movies and then defenders of the earth.
All New superhero movie universe
I'm not a big fan of those characters but I'd give them each a shot.
As Indian i remember watching the movie trailer on national TV called Doordarshan and i found it really cool. It was the early 90s when Hollywood was making entry into Indian market. The first blockbuster to catch the nation's attention would definitely be Jurassic Park. I watch Defenders of The Earth and Phantom 2040. Learned today that Billy Zane, the Titanic villain is the movie Phantom. Phantom remains a cool character and needs a reboot.
I still think this was one of the better 90s superhero movies... From what I recall, there was a bit of a backlash about his costume... purple in the jungle indeed. Very dark purple & black tactical gear would have been a bit different and updated from the old comics. Though not sure if he'd survive the humidity hehe.
They didn't really have the concept of camouflage in the Western World at the time, so it would've looked very out of place.
There are some interviews with Lee Falk in a couple of the books collecting the old comic strips where he says he actually wanted the costume to be either grey or dark green. He actually liked the idea of using some form of camouflage (despite what the other commenter says about people in the past not having a concept of camouflage, people in the past were in fact, not stupid) some of the first comic strips even describe the costume as being grey. However, when it was printed in color for Sunday comics, the publisher decided to color it purple.
@@CrashWeezerman when it came out in italy his costume was reprinted in red, the original purple was used only when it was republished in the 1991.
this is my dad's favorite character when he was a kid.
@scaccu In Sweden it’s blue, which is my favorite ;)
In India phantom is purple.
However i feel darker deep purple would have looked better for hiding in shadows of dark jungle
If Paramount or Lionsgate (which bought some of the rights to "The Phantom" I believe) is intelligent. They'll make a sequel starring Billy Zane and introduce Mandrake, Flash Gordon and Tarzan, who all were owned by King Features Syndicate. Then they can make a Defenders of the Earth type movie or like the new "King's Watch" comics. Though they need to make these movies more gritty and real and remove the camp quality of the first film (I love it though!) as that wouldn't work anymore at all. Also, to ensure the sucess of the character, they'd need to release the movies first on the territories where the comic book characters are popular, like in Australia, New Zealand, India and the UK. Release it later in the U.S. It's not the be all and end all of a film's box office anymore!
Billy Zane, one of the most underrated actors. Great film, saw it a bunch of times in the Theater.
When people say that the purple suit is horrible for camouflaging in the jungle I look at them and say. "Maybe in the daytime, but try finding a guy in a full body purple suit in the jungle at night. It'd be easier to find Batman in the dark alleys of Gotham."
This was the first time I remember a movie being hyped with it's own website. That blew my mind back in 1996! Great movie and great review!
I found Billy Zane's preformance of the Phantom character had little of Adam West's 60's Batman in style and tone in certain scenes but not over all)..the shower scene with the women could have been right out the 60's Batman tv show in style and tone
Excellent review! I remember seeing The Phantom movie in wide release and enjoying it. Over the years I've watched it a few more times on DVD and I still like it. As a matter of fact, I own a copy. I was disappointed when it failed at the box office because I wanted it to become a franchise. I hope they do a remake that catches on one day.
I'm a huge phantom fan i.e. "phanatic"
They got almost everything right in the film just like in the comics .
I loved this film although it has some flaws.
I hope we get another Phantom movie .
Great review.
I remember being obsessed with his ring as a kid and had to get it lol never saw the movie just wanted his ring
This movie is a real treat for superhero junkies. Phantom was one of the first comics I came across as a (big) kid. Interestingly you didn't mentioned the late father's (ghost?) appearance, for me it give the movie character a sense of insanity, which I didn't like. I don't recall anything like this from the comics, tho I had only around 8 of them, so I'm absolutely fall in the category of "I know some basic stuff of the character, I like it, but I don't know everything."
I loved the Phantom, I am not sure why their is so much hate. It hits all the superhero geek spots to me.
I like this movies about pulp heroes, one movie that I recommend is the 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas, for me is a good movie then again I don´t know your opinions. And by the away great review.
When I was a kid, Phantom was my favorite hero.We had indrajal comics here in india which used to print comics way back in the 70s and the 80s.But slowly they disappeared from the main stream comics.Today children in india dont know anything aboit phantom.Really sad.
I can't believe it's 20 years old!,it's still a good movie!
"the idea of a man dressed in purple running around in the jungle" 😂
I really loved this movie. It didn't take itself too seriously (the Phantom certainly didn't take himself seriously), the Phantom's fight scenes seemed straight out of the comic book pages, and there is that whole adventure feel to it, taking you into that time and era. Absolute nostalgia. Absolutely loved it!
"A great sense of fun" sums the film up very well.
I absolutely love this movie. It was like a blend of the charm of Superman The Movie and the swashbuckling adventure of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Billy Zane and Treat Williams are essentially Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman's Superman and Lex Luthor. My ONE issue with the film is the backstory of Quill and Kit's father. So Quill killed Kit's father when he was the Phantom... yet Kit's father's ghostly image is an elderly man. So.... was Patrick McGoohan running around in purple tights at age 60?
yeah I think McGoohan was a bit too old to be running around at the previous Phantom but you are only as old as you feel! lol. You got Arnie and Sly running around in their late 60s!
He was indeed that age when he was killed. The date seen on his nameplate in the crypt and what Kit tells Diana both support it. So this means Kit was off in America while his geriatric dad was still being the Phantom. The question, though, is... was this because the father can't give up the role until he dies, or because Kit was being a typical irresponsible twentysomething post-college? Either way, this makes Quill kind of dumb if he can't the difference between a sixysomething man and a twentysomething man.
Treat Williams was a much better villain than Hackman's Lex Luthor though that wouldn't be difficult but Williams is very likeable.
I saw this in the theater with my wife. We both enjoyed it then and we have both the DVD and Blu versions. It is a fun little movie and Billy Zane was perfect along with Kirsty Swanson. If I could change anything it would be Treat Williams as Drax. But still very good and watchable. I own this movie, the Shadow, the Rocketeer, and Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. Each one slightly different but all watchable. I miss pulp stories.
I loved The Phantom growing up. I used to read it on the newspaper comic strips everyday. On the Sunday Paper it was a full page in color so you got more of the story! Sucks kids today don't get to do that sort of stuff...
Loved the movie. Watched it repeatedly when it came to the cable movie channel.
This was an amazing review. Interesting to know that in Spanish Phantom and Ghost are the same word . So we call him "El Fantasma que Camina" the waking ghost
My kids and I really love this movie as well as The Shadow and John Carter. I think the main problem was that these characters came from a time too long before the current generation and were largely unknown to them. Also the advertising wasn't good. Thx for these reviews. I enjoy them!
I hate when people say there weren't any good superhero/comic book movies before the Marvel Studios movies. I love The Phantom, The Shadow, The Rocketeer, and Dick Tracy.
I don't know why these films set in the 30's didn't do better. I mean the Mummy did really well and I thought they were at least on par with that film.... Maybe I'm just a sucker for pulp adventure films?
The mummy had a better story.
I really need to watch this again.
The thing that really makes the Phantom hold up is the stunts; in world where every hero becomes a CGI rubber ball, it's great to see actual human beings swinging from bridges, sliding down elevator shafts, and dropping from planes.
hard choice for me, loved Phantom and Rocketeer tremendously. Shadow, while a good ride isn't one of my tops to watch, but I was there, at opening night, I witnessed the history and that's all I need.
Thanks for the great review, it really gave me new appreciation for this film. As a kid I loved The Shadow and Rocketeer, thought this one was the weakest one, although I absolute love The Phantom 2040. Hope to see more reviews from you.
Such a great movie. And you're right it is aging well.
I always loved reading the phantom along with my grandfather. We loved that movie.
I think a review of Backdraft would be nice. It's such a neat flick.
I was 16 years old when it was released - and I remember enjoying it! surprised that it wasn't more popular... I appreciated its more traditional, upbeat tone ----- great review, I'll rewatch The Phantom! I haven't seen it since 1996
I was amazed when you said everything above the first floor in the city is CGI. it’s amazing even for today’s standards. It also doesn’t hurt that I’m a sucker for Art Deco
I think there's two reasons why super hero movie reboots of early era heroes don't do well at the box office. First, super hero or adventure movies are mostly for kids, teens or thought of as light family entertainment. Most people, especially young people, have only experienced this present day world we live in, with no frame of reference to the past. Kids watch movies like The Phantom, The Rocketeer or The Shadow and feel like they're watching something "old fashioned" and not of their time, even if it has big modern FX and contemporary actors.
When The Phantom, The Rocketeer and The Shadow first came out, they WERE contemporary stories, not period pieces! They were present day super hero stories told to a present day audience, and I feel updates and reboots of such stories should also be contemporary (if you want good box office, that is!) Look at Batman and Superman. Two of the earliest super heroes, emerging in the 30's… But when the major studio movies came out, were Batman and Superman set in the 30's? No! Because they're contemporary characters, and however many more reboots there are of them, audiences will always respond better if those characters exist in THEIR OWN time period.
The second reason is that the target audience for super hero movies has no idea who any of these characters are. Unlike Batman and Superman, characters like The Phantom, The Rocketeer and The Shadow didn't go on to have huge comic books followings in the coming decades, cartoons, TV shows… They were forgotten. The only people who remember the old serials or comics are the old timers, and they're not the people going to see super hero movies!
Rocketeer was invented in the nineteen eighties.
Well, I enjoy films set in the past. I find them interesting because they are set in the past, not yet another film set in the present.
Great review !!! Really enjoyed it , top notch Oliver. I remember seeing it in theaters too and really liking it. I'm glad it found an audience although somewhat later
I should also point out some changes from the original version of the Phantom. The 1st Phantom was around 20 years old when his ship was attacked by pirates and he was found by members of the pygmy tribe Bandar. Touganda is totally different tribe, who have appeared in very few stories. The origins of the Phantom's ring has, as far as I am aware of, never been mentioned by Lee Falk, but in Team Fantomen stories (stories license produced by the Swedish comic book) it is said to have been given to the 1st Phantom by Paracelsus in 1541 (or 1540) and once have been owned by Roman emperor Nero.
Concerning Sala, she was in the very first two Phantom stories, being a bad guy that fell in love with the Phantom and was torn between her loyalties. Later, she returned in "The Return of the Sky Band" which ended with the Phantom helping her escape so that she could start a new life.
For anyone who wants to find out more about the Phantom, I can recommend the PhantomWiki.org
Always a joy to hear your reviews, Oliver.
I noticed a misunderstanding in the review about Quill. Quill stabbed the 20th Phantom in the back (that is obviuosly based on Rama Singh's similar treachery in the comic book) and took his belt. When Quill then met the Phantom in the beginning of the movie, he stabbs the Phantom in the side, causing a minor wound that is tended to by Guran later. When they meet the next time Quill tries to hit THAT wound, not the backstabbing wound.
As Zane who was Australian , was thrilled to play the role as he wore a wig since he shaves his head in actual life .
Billy zanes is not Australian, he is Turkish American means Turkish Christian
Wrong again, he's Greek born in America to Greek parents from a village in Sparta.
It is a great movie.
Also debut of Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Ppl find treat William silly, but that's kind of the point of his character, a rich man who is not very smart but wants to buy supernatural ancient powers.
The movie has a very 1950s look and feel
I remember when I saw this in the theater I fell asleep, and woke up to "UNBELIEVABLE!!" Very jarring. However, when I was able to rewatch it, I loved it, I was just too damn tired that night. I definitely got a mini Phantom obsession for a few months.
I was introduced to the character by this film. Because of this film, I watched the matinee serial and miniseries and loved them all...
Apologies, I'm a bit late getting to this Ollie. Another great review of a beloved film from my childhood. There something about this, The Shadow and The Rocketeer that I adore. Love that time period and could imagine all three of these guys teaming up....a 40's Justice league!! This was packed full of facts and as always a treat to listen to. Awesome!
I love this movie. I used to read the comics as a kid, while everyone else was reading DC or marvel, I was collecting the Phantom. Those Phantom rings they brought out as merchandise for the movie I still hold dear!
It's a real shame this film didn't turned out better; Billy Zane did an amazing job even if he comes across as a costumed Indiana Jones than a superhero (at least as we see 'em nowadays), I think he totally nailed the throwback vibe of pre-1950's movie heroes. This movie's biggest flaw to me is its weak plot.
Oliver. Again, my friend, you have brought out pieces of my childhood. Awesome pulpy adventure movie that feels great in an old school way.
Another great retrospective Oliver I am going to rent The Phantom tonight. I love to see another movie like this done as a retrospective Sky captain and the world of tomorrow. Some love it some hate it I think it would be interesting see your take.
Now it's time to bring Phantom in 2022 as a movie...A wonderful character
Great review as usual. You are my favourite movie reviewer. Why you dont have at least a million subscribers is beyond me.
Thank you very much for your feedback, its very kind of you.
recent interview with Joe Dante discussing the Phantom www.denofgeek.com/movies/gremlins/13227/the-den-of-geek-interview-joe-dante
Interview was from about 6 years ago but the part about the Phantom was enlightening. The fact it was originally a spoof actually explains a lot about the film. I was a huge Phantom fan as a kid and while there are parts of this film I really like, for the most part it was a massive let-down. It was too silly to be played as straight as it was.
Great review as always, I know youre buissy, but I was wondering how does a film shot-today, on HD cameras, SD cards or what ever get to the projectors? Does It fitt an SD card-feor example or does It have to be coverted in some fashion? Like a vidoe casete to a DVD or?
One of the most recognizable soundtracks used on oh so many movie trailers.
It is a fun movie that has that quintessential '90's' look when a lot was done practically and VFX were limited to the absolutely necessary. And it is worth watching just to see Treat Williams chewing the scenery of every scene he is in. ;)
Back in the 90s, my Mom used to work at a Blockbuster and would bring me back the most random movies. This was one of them. As a kid, I thought it was pretty good. Now that I'm older, I still think this but I can't help but laugh at The Phantom's gear. Just a dude running through the jungle in a purple ass spandex jump suit. Compared to Batman or Ironman, this superhero getup is just hilarious to me.
I don't know how it is (was) in the USA but here in Sweden I think everybody knew about The Phantom in the 1960's, -70's and 80's... and perhaps even longer. The Phantom then was common knowledge and famous as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.
Man i love this movie and the character of the Phantom.... I really hope we get a remake of this underrated as hell character
This Movie looks pretty good, And Catherine Zeta-Jones ❤️ she’s so Hot
I might add some more details of the character, as I am a fan. There exists a license production of Phantom stories in Scandinavia (in Sweden), which from 1972 until quite recently was in the hands of Ulf Granberg, longtime editor of the Swedish Phantom comic book, Fantomen. One such story ("The Skull Murders") inspired the movie's idea of the Skulls of Touganda.
I remember watching an HBO closer look on the bridge stunt back in the day.
Phantom is the one superhero that chooses to stay out of public knowledge unlike superman or spidey which is why he is my fav superhero before Batman. Phantom stories are also the most mysterious/suspenseful because of the jungle setting and Indiana jones kind of adventures. I'm an aspiring filmmaker and if I'm successful, I will definitely make an old school type phantom movie trying not to be cheesy.
One thing that really stuck with me was his ring, when pushed it will forever leave the mark on your face lol, also the mark, when placed on the wrist will symbolize you are under then phantoms protection.
I will always love this movie, the phantom is my favorite comic/pulp character ever created and this movie has a special place in my heart. I remember seeing this in the theater with my uncle and I was blown away by it. It's a shame we never got more movies. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake. I saw the Syfy channel movie as well which was alright. But it never resonated with me as much as the '96 movie...
Honestly love your selection of movies that you review, so many movies ive always been curious about but never really wanted to give them the time to watch.
I haven't seen this one. Saw the Rocketeer (thought it was OK) and The Shadow (thought it was boring). I saw them both when they first debuted and I was just a teen. I really didn't know anything about the '30s at the time, so all of that work to replicate the time period went unappreciated. I suspect many other young people were the same way.
I am 50 years but still a fan of the Ghost who walks.
If not for the pandemic we will be watching another movie. The Phantom 2021.
They can make a tv serial casting someone. Phantom of the present time.
Billy Jane was superb.
Ages like a good fine wine.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND THE PHANTOM! everything from defenders of the earth, phantom 2040, the comics. he is my favorite pulp/comic hero ever. I've been a fan and my very first comic was the phantom that my grammpa gave me when I was three in 83. sure the movie is cheesy, but I love it for what it is. anything about the phantom and im on it.....
I passed on this movie back when it was new because it looked really cheesy to me. However, watching this review and seeing a lot of the scenes, it looks like a pretty well-made film with some good action and humor. I'll check it out sometime.
Note From The Future: R.I.P. Treat Williams.😢
Great show as always. I always liked the phantom as well as the shadow.
You do excellent shows. You have done so many shows, I wasn't sure, have you done the black hole yet?
Ghost dad in the movie is great.
Phantom knows he is only in his mind but the dad properly scolds and schools phantom
Excellent review! Makes me want to watch it again. Been a long time.
I never would have throuhg to compare Zane's _Phantom_ performance with Reeve's legendary _Superman_. But saying they were both "proper heroes" and joyful in their portrayals...yeah, that works.
I am a big fan of the phantom and I would love a modern reboot (I think we can all agree to forget, that 2009 monstrosity) as long as it was faithful. if done right, I think it could be modern and true to the phantom mythos.
1630revelloak 2009?
Probably the most accurate page to screen transition I've ever seen
the phantom's father played king edward longshanks in braveheart.
I kinda like this when I was a kid it's kinda like a cross between black panther and Indiana Jones but he doesn't have powers like Batman but I thought he have powers in the cartoons unless they changed it but the phantom is cool anyway 😎😎😎😎
I remember when this movie was on TV, and we went to the grocery store and I got the Phantom dart gun. Miss being a kid.
Man, I remember watching this when it first came out and thought it was god awful. The music score, however, was excellent. Easily one of the best action scores of the 90s. Now your review makes me want to go back and revisit it. I tried watching in on one of those free movie streaming sites, but they played commercials every fives minutes, so I bailed, but not before watching the impressive opening action sequence on the bridge. This movie really did look very nice.
This was a childhood treat. Loved it as a kid as I'm a fan of the comics!
You have brilliant reviews man , keep them up , legendary.
The Phantom was a comic strip in my local daily paper so I grew up knowing about him years before this film was released. I enjoyed it more than the other film about a comic strip in that paper, Modesty Blaise.
Time Bandits(1981)? Love the reviews, keep them up!!!!
I have this film on my Playstation 4 and It's really good.
I've never seen this film before mainly because there was never any marketing that stood out for it. Now that I've seen this, I would be willing to give it a watch. My only hang up is that it does seem a bit of a clash to have a guy in purple spandex riding a horse and running through the jungle. One is a very modern visual while the other is a very old style visual. Regardless, thumbs up to Mr. David Burr!
