Even as a kid in the 90s , I could sense that this cartoon was artistically and thematically different than all the other cartoons prevalent back then. The urban jungle aesthetic, the unusual character and environment designs, the detailed futurism, the animation ... Everything about this show was made with care and attention, by a team that clearly cared about their final product.
As somebody said below, it was ahead of its time. It started airing way before the influential cyberpunk Ghost in the Shell was released. I confessed that, then, I wasn't ready to greet it properly. I was too young, and the artistic direction, which heavily channels Aeon Flux's, isn't particularly attractive to younger minds. But that was the point: Phantom 2040's world wasn't supposed to come off as appealing, as it's in a cold, creepy, post-apocalyptic place. The ecological statement of this futuristic reinterpretation of the original comic strip works excellently well, not only because of the tribal nature of the hero... But also because it doesn't contradict the franchise's canon. Indeed, the Phantom is the heir of a long dynasty, instead of a self made standalone vigilante. I have seen most modernizations of old franchises miserably failing, but this IP's formula is virtually timeless. The Phantom is the purest avatar of the noble savage, an indomitable shadow of what humanity decided to cast away by embracing civilization. It makes for action packed intrigues with surprisingly complex subtext.

Always been send the 1930's
one of my favorite cartoon during my school days
My Childhood Memories ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ From MANIPUR
lol we are about 15 years from this cartoons era lol and not one flying car, not one
Another 20 years we will get this
This style reminds me of the Aeon flux cartoon and a few short of the animatrix. Stephen chung was the creator i think.. not sure
This animation are beyond the Time 😵😵
20:19 that part of the tape was worn. It was my fav scene and I just kept rewinding it
I was always in a hurry to get home from school, to watch this. 😂😂😂
I will be 60 in 2040
I hope to be still around and will play the games either on the SNES or Megadrive on RUclips
Funny I never watched this growing up because this wasn’t the phantom from defenders of the earth
Now I was watching this series 30 years later
This is the first time I have seen this. And I love Peter Cheung s animation.
My favourite show.
That Grey Ghost line was definitely a call back to the Grey Ghost from the old old 1920
I wish the full series was released on streaming or blu ray
I am seeing after a long long time still it's so fresh,90 kids knows about this
90's are awesome... 😇😇😇
Ya know having this on tape there’s actually a couple differences between the two
What about the ten or so episodes that are listed as unavailable in the Phantom 2040 playlist?
The Aeon Flux style of art creeped me out as a kid. It was a head of its time
