@@craigadam A good faith debate between a pair of nobodies, sure. Joe Rogan's net worth is 9 digits long and he has a fanbase of predominantly right-wing libertarians that he will not dare piss off. At that point the debate is a sport and its fans are just like any other group of sports fans - spectators with a side they're cheering for. Its entertainment, not enlightenment.
IIRC the furthest-left person Joe Rogan has ever had on his show was Bernie Sanders, and Parenti here makes Bernie look like a moderate Republican. He'd get on the mic and say something nice about the USSR, feminism, communism or trans people (or say something mean about the United States, its military, or its history) and +60-90% of Rogan's audience would go thermonuclear, accuse him of going "woke", and unsubscribe.
Also, Parenti is in his late 80s and sadly in failing health.

00:00 🎙 Perception involves selecting, omitting, and organizing data, introducing distortions.
05:08 🌐 Objectivity is often influenced by dominant paradigms, which may be biased and lack true objectivity.
07:15 🤔 Dissenting opinions, although challenged, are often more reliable than mainstream views due to continuous testing against evidence.
09:05 🙅‍♂ Beliefs can be impervious to evidence, and people often resort to fallback positions when confronted with contradictory information.
23:35 🇷🇺 Many Russians regret the demise of the Soviet Union and believe life was better under communism, challenging mainstream narratives.
27:41 🇷🇸 Serbia is the only former Yugoslav republic that remains multi-ethnic, debunking the ethnic cleansing narrative.
28:40 🌍 Empires are often built on the expropriation of resources, labor, and capital from other countries.
36:24 🏛 Empires are not accidental or unintentional; they are purpose-driven and require conscious effort to mobilize resources for conquest and plunder.
45:03 💰 Imperialism is the process by which empires exert their dominion and economic control over other nations, often through exploitation and expropriation.
50:34 🌐 Investments and aid in the third world can increase poverty, as wealth accumulation often benefits the ruling and investing class of the imperial country.
55:38 📈 IMF policies may bring hardship to the people of target countries but can be highly profitable for a small group of wealthy investors, making them successful from a certain perspective.
56:50 🌍 The term "failure" is used to maintain the dominant paradigm and avoid radical analysis, which often ignores the true interests behind policies.
57:05 💰 Plutocratic investors and working people in recipient countries do not share a community of interest, highlighting the importance of class analysis.
57:32 🤑 The question "cui bono?" or "who benefits?" is crucial in understanding the motives behind policies, especially in the context of the IMF.
58:13 🇮🇶 The war in Iraq was not a blunder but served certain interests, including sending a message to countries pursuing independent paths.
01:00:09 🇮🇶 Saddam Hussein, initially supported by the U.S., turned into an enemy when he resisted economic globalization and maintained state ownership of the economy.
01:02:55 🛢 The Iraq war also aimed at securing control over vast oil reserves and manipulating oil prices.
01:04:53 💰 The Iraq war led to record increases in the defense budget, benefiting military-industrial complex interests.
01:05:33 💵 Iraq's switch from euros to dollars as its reserve currency served U.S. financial interests.
01:06:13 🇮🇶 Iraq's shift from supporting Palestinian liberation to privatization and destruction of its economy.
01:06:41 💡 Officialdom and media sometimes struggle to manipulate reality, and people develop skepticism toward propaganda.
01:08:20 💼 Those in power believe in protecting and advancing their own interests above all else.
01:12:47 🌐 The ruling class's primary goal throughout history is to acquire everything while paying none of the costs.
01:19:45 🗳 The ruling class targets the American public with propaganda because the empire relies on the support of the republic.
01:21:37 🔄 Over time, sedatives can become suffocating, and irritants can enliven, prompting people to seek a more meaningful perspective.
01:21:50 🌍 Parenti emphasizes the importance of resisting fundamentalist free-market plutocracy and exposing the dominant paradigm.
01:22:32 💰 Getting involved in political causes, contributing financially, and supporting political counter-propaganda is crucial, as the left tends to donate more to such causes.
01:24:00 📻 Parenti criticizes the American labor movement for not taking action in the realm of radio, while conservatives have effectively controlled the narrative through radio ownership.
01:26:48 🏛 The right-wing has strategically influenced the federal judiciary over the years, while the left has often underestimated their effectiveness in this area.

At first the land was settled for generations and the people lived off the land and the fruits of their labour. Then along comes Mr Do Good. He says it would be better if he owned the land and the people were cleared off of it. Now they live in shanty towns on $2 a day. 10 years later they are making $4 a day and Mr Do Good wins a prize for improving the lot of the poor people by 100%.

For me two party paradigm is as obvious thing as american imperialism. I just hope it was just a sign of small bit of naivety (just like Chomsky and his lack of willingness to dive into 9/11 "conspiracy theories"). And there are more things - even though he suggest that USSR wasn't perfect by any means, i think his portrayal of it ommits how strong class divide was in communist block - people who worked for the party lived different lives and accumulated incredible wealth, when "system change" came, they had no opponents in the market, they started all of the biggest bussineses, people from secret police went to work in private security sector, and organized crime, or went to police and millitary - all working together (in poland for example organized crime was even used by late communist party to make money from selling drugs, stealing cars, and prostitution abroad), they had owned all the major media and most public offices from the get go. I think if your definition of communism has anything to do with social justice, and more socialy oriented social contract - USSR and it's spehere of influence had barely any communism in their systems. Instead of "working class" being in power, it was a priviliged class that made all decisions. And then the whole transformation was nothing else than smooth transition to even better system, one where illusion of democracy, and illusion of political discourse (many forms of two party paradigm) helped make people who made real decisions, pretty much unaccountable - this fake democracy used (or is using) bureaucracy as a tool of covering their tracks and fighting real opponents (covering - becasue it's always a clean up operation after previous government, and no one is responsible, and there are magical "rules" and all hands are always tied, and then you can always use that tool to destroy someone elses political and financial power - bureaucracy isn't in that case an error, it's a carefully constructed and well maintained tool).
The last thing that i want to point out is that i don't agree that the only reason for impersialistic endavours are clear economic means (like resources) - i do think you have to fully understand that at some point the goal is the power itself, the power over others freedom, no matter the cost of obtaining it. Some people want money, some sex, some luxury, and some want just power - and there are plenty people at the top with all the money needed, all the brains needed, and just inextinguishable thirst for power. Without that realisation, that people at the top can be as far from sane as a crazy serial killer, but much smarter, and much more resourcefull, at some point whole thing doesn't make sense anymore.
That being said i really enjoy his lectures

So, the first question is "What IS money?" You answer that wrong and you get what we have. We are not going to fix this with several more centuries of illiteracy.
If the imperialist can create units and demand that taxes be paid in those units then the populace has to go looking for those units that the imperialist can dole out to whatever 'businesses' or adventures that the imperialist needs people's labor to get done. And since the people cannot get out of paying taxes then they have to provide their labor to the imperialist's adventures and whims in order to not get their asses kicked by the imperialist's thugs (cops and military) that the imperialist has already "paid" with those magical units! Of course, the imperialist will announce all the fun places one can provide one's labor to in order to acquire the magical units and even "advance in the social order" ........and the populace may even come to think of the imperialist as kind and beneficent by way of all the "job creation" that has happened. There are companies in support of the Military Industrial Complex 'providing jobs' in every single congressional district of this imperialist country. It is Stockholm Syndrome in the free range plantation of imperialism all being driven by our own illiteracy about this thing called money!!
What if we thought of the present system as centuries old 'Martial Law!?' (as in marshaling resources by the imperialist) Perhaps we can see martial law as having levels to it and that we simply are not seeing the level we are on.
The People must come to know that money creation, from nothing and yet turned into a thing of 'value' - Poof! - is NOT a power that anyone actually has, not anyone, not any government, not any bank.
The war making will not stop till we come to know what is wrong with our own beliefs about money and the insanity that we are accepting.
Graeber and the history of coins and money and their connection to militarism.
    Listen from 42:06 to 47:10
    ruclips.net/video/CZIINXhGDcs/видео.html
There is no "authority" or anyone else that has some magical power to create a thing of value from nothing. And if no entity has this power it certainly cannot hand this power off to the very banks that now hold even governments hostage to this process!
We all must know that the illiterate 'pre-creation' of units is different from unit creation that comes after the work is done as recognition/a record of it. We must articulate this difference to keep people aware that it is their own freely initiated enterprise that calls the use of money into existence. When we lose sight of this we lose our sovereignty.
