Sikhs "don't see color?" Are Sikhs "COLORBLIND" or just denying anti-Blackness? | Why

  • Опубликовано: 6 янв 2024
  • In the debut episode of AT THE INTERSECTION: a Black x Sikh podcast, Soorma x Smalls discuss why this project, BLACK x SIKH, is necessary despite EQUALITY being a core tenet of Sikhi.
Punjabi Sikhs swear they don't see our color. Despite staring at us when we enter any gurdwara, or following us around said gurdwaras assuming we're there to steal, or mansplaining the most basic fundamentals of Sikhi to us after discovering our existence, Sikhs swear they're colorblind and don't see our race//skin color.
Moreover, they expect us to accept their unwillingness to accept or even acknowledge our Blackness; expect us to believe our race + culture as Black americans, doesn't matter and has no bearing or impact on our practice of Sikhi or interaction w| the sangat.
Yea, no-our lived experience w| Sikhi [nearly 10 years each] says otherwise.
If equality//equity is the goal, we've got work to do-starting with the acknowledging the rampant anti-Blackness plaguing South Asians, something to which not even Punjabi Sikhs are immune.
Let's get into it, right here at....
...the intersection of culture x faith.

I’m sorry that u guys experienced any discrimination. Our gurus teach us equal love!!!… I also feel ur A sikh because you want to connect with Waheguru, and ur focusing on the people. There is going to be some kind of separation because of the culture. It shouldn’t be I agree. Realistically it is but think beyond that. Its more and don’t let that get in the way of ur experience of bliss with waheguru ji.

I'm from the UK and its never heard of or even seen (different ethnicities visiting gudwara)..
Yes i agree that during langar they accommodate.
But excluding langar then there's no cohesion tolerance.
(For Example walk past any mosque and you'll see a whole range of people from all backgrounds ethnicities race etc embracing and United)..
The Sikh community needs to address this matter

I am not Sikh. (It’s not relevant but, I am female presenting Indian American Spiritual Hindu.) I stumbled across your instagram story and was intrigued. I have never heard of any non Punjabi Sikhs and wanted to learn more about this. Thank you sharing, educating and reminding all of us to treat each other with more kindness and grace than we do every day. This systematic racism is everywhere and we all need to do better.

Nice, the thing is that Punjabi culture is more practiced than Sikhi itself and because Sikhs did not teach anyone about Sikhi, Sikhi sadly kinda got trapped in the realms of Punjab.

In his lecture on the Arab slave-trade in Africa, Dr. John Henrik Clarke said the European did to Christianity what the Arab did to Islam that is remove the spirituality and use the religion as a political tool. Dr. Clarke said the African has a spirituality that he brings to any religion and conceives of that religion in its purest form.
Black people across the three major religions all deal with the exact anti-black racism you describe. This is how we know that the primary issue for blacks globally is anti-black policy and propaganda. This is the issue to be confronted and solved.
I suspect the two of you are true Sikhs of the highest order.

Please do forgive the ignorance of those whom you find in some Sikhi Darbar.
The issue of ones colour within scripture or Gurbani does not exist.
Now reasons why we may find prejudice within Darbar is because most of the worshippers within Gurdwara Sahib DO NOT understand the blessing of Sikhi.
Due to an amas of colonisation Sikhi was not allowed to spread and a lot of what we have today is a colonised version of Sikhi.
Satguru is Guru for the world NOT just for Panjab.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself was NOT of Panjabi descent. So until decolonisation of the Paniabi diaspora and the heads of our faith are NOT progressive in terms of not Just Panjab.
The British recreated Sikhi and lowered the spread so it wouldnt become widespread. One of the first things that the British and Brahmins done was Stop Sikhi People Preaching and spreading the word and scripture of Sikhi.
Not to take away from the Panjabis for they have sacrificed insurmountable heads to keep the faith alive.
Panjab is currently awashed with drugs and poverty so those you may see in the Darbar although in appearance maybe wearing a Turban they are NOT Dastaars.
They are learning or just practising from an incorrect standing. I think in some cases Plato’s cave analogy needs to be applied.
As more people are coming into Sikhi and have better understandings you can also be more than just students but become educated teachers of the Bani.
Remove the ceiling! For imagine having one who is Female and of West Indian or European Head of faith. We can do that now.
Until we keep those of Brahmanical or British mindsets in Turbans at the head of the SGPC those barriers will remain.

I hear you. Sikhs and potatoes are everywhere and comes in all shapes and sizes and colours and cultures . I just don’t agree to the generalisation . I saw a video where a black child saw a white guy for the first time and thought it was a ghost and cried. So if a Punjabi ( old to middle age especially ) see a black Sikh and stares , it’s not because they don’t like you but it’s new to them. I have yet to see a Chinese Sikh in real life ( only saw on screen)and I might stare for couple of seconds 😅 lol while my heart bursts with joy to see Chinese Gurus Sikh. Sikh has the same issues with Hindus where Hindus points some things out and says that it’s SAME ( sameness) without realising the definition of culture and religion. Hindu culture might have a lot of interceptions with Sikh culture but religion is a different story. Keep going. It’s gonna take time or maybe a whole generation before every one understands the difference between religion vs culture and equality vs sameness.

To not acknowledge skin colour is to completely ignore who you are. I am sorry for the experiences you have had from other Sikhs my dear brother and sister. I know how this feels but not in regards to skin colour but more in regards to my caste.
Caste belief is forbidden in Sikhism but caste is integral to Punjabi culture and so it bleeds into the faith. People like Diljit Dosanjh and Jasmin Sandlas perpetuate caste belief through their music which is very unfortunate. If we cannot treat each other properly then it’s no wonder to me that when a black or white person joins the faith they experience some form of negativity.

I agree with what you both are saying. It is definitely a problem in the Sikh community and communities across the globe taking Black culture for there own benefit. I will say one thing about what the gentleman said about there’s no hoods in India, I would say go to slums out there there definitely is the same shit you see out here in America, if not WAY worse. Also, there are Punjabis here in Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, and Stockton that grew up there whole life in the hoods. Don’t think you don’t see Desis in the hood, just like Asians, Samoans, Hispanics, etc. just sayin

      Hello,
Thank you for watching. For added clarity: he wasn't talking about Indians (Desi-americans) in the hoods of the u.s. He specifically mentioned Indians in India.
While there may be "slums," or similar areas, there are not hoods in the way the artist was talking about. This isn't about economics or simply living in a poor area; it's cultural and the meaning + definition of hood in this sense is contextual.
By no means was he trying to discount the experiences of Indians who have similar economic experiences.
Hope this clears some things up. : )

The whole world will be Sikhs, united to give God a better day , everyday but we will always have boundaries as living things.
Everybody is the same but the attention and intention determins were they are in the sum of their being.
We are all expressions the same source. Treated equally but the symbolism of 3 sword and a ring is Automatic on the 5 K 's.
That determins the properties of the true self , the Sat Nam. Be your true self.
Dont speak for Guru like that in what he intended based on your interpretation. Guru made a Khalsa army to appear as one to fight an oppression.

When you say Sikhs you are generalizing all Sikhs. You are talking about few people who at the end of the day people with their imperfections. So to label all for a few is hypocritical. Also do more research on the meaning behind the turbans depending on the code of conduct for Amritdhari Sikhs is a little different. So if someone tells you something don’t get defensive, there is more to it so sister take your advise and be mindful yourself.

why do y'all do this? why try to explain my own experience to me? i see their faces, i see them avoid me; it's not pride.
it's very dismissive of y'all to make excuses for their bad behavior, to downplay//diminish the harm caused to us. respectfully, it's not helpful; in fact, it just causes further harm by forcing me to relive the experience over again b|c it's like you're trying to gaslight me by telling me my experience is not real or that it was different than it actually was.
let me be as clear as i possibly can:
they do not stare out of pride. sometimes it's shock, sometimes disdain, sometimes concern, sometimes confusion. but i promise...it's not pride. especially if i speak, wave, say hello + they ignore me, make a face, or just look away w|o saying a word, or worse turn to the person sitting closest to them + whisper to each other while one continues to stare at me w| furrowed brows. that's not pride. that's not welcoming.
if you want to be helpful or make things better for Black Sikhs + non-Punjabi Sikhs, don't do this. don't make excuses or try to explain things away. instead, listen to what we're telling you + reflect on it. trust that we are more than capable of understanding our own experiences + don't need them explained to us.
accept the experiences as they are told to you instead of diminishing them or insinuating the person doesn't know or understand their own reality//lived experience.
please. we hear this almost every day. imagine if every other day, strangers told you that you never actully experienced what you say have experienced. 🥵😣
how would it make you feel?
