Steal Away is a traditional American song used by the enslaved people attempting to free themselves using the Underground Railroad, the term describing the journey to northern America or Canada to live in freedom. The lyrics "Steal away to Jesus," on the surface, meant dying and going to heaven, but also symbolised escaping to freedom as spirituals often held hidden meaning used by the enslaved people to communicate with one another.
