I never thought I'd hear a choir whose pronunciation was actually too good. This is gospel music, not Monteverdi.

James Thorson Its also not Gospel. It’s a Negro Spiritual, while similar the two are very different

Prefer the version that ends with a higher note “home” very good pronunciation tho

Lovely singing. Only fault IMHO is over-emphasising the 't' sound on the end of ain't and got which rather spoilt it for me. It sounds unnatural and cumbersome to my ear. 'Ain't got' is a slang expression and sounds better pronounced as it would have been sung originally by black Americans, i.e. stopping the tongue on the roof of the mouth, as opposed to the open-mouthed cockney way.

Choir directors insist on things like singing the "t" sound so it can be clearly heard. I used to sing this with my barbershop quartet and the Viroqua Mens Chorus.

Sang it in a Men's group freshman year in high school, probably '73-'74 school year. Those practices were pretty damn early in the morning now that I think about it. 6:30 or 7:00. Before school. Glad I did it.

Give 'em a break; they don't speak that foreign language.
