brinno tlc pro 200 rusty battery

This is my brinno timelapse camera that was in the waterproof case for 8 to 10 months filming a construction project. I would change the battery's every 3 months with no problem.. this time the battery are rusted and it won't turn on.. is this a case leaking issue or a battery exploded issue beside the rust the battery's are sticky.. also the waterproof case is starting to turn yellow.. this camera was located on a roof in south Florida

should have used Lithium batteries

Batteries get hot over time.and when they are enclosed in an airtight case like that heat has no place to go.
