  • If you are thinking of pursuing a career as a UI Designer or UX Designer then this video is for you. It can be hard to know where to start and which road is the right one for you to travel down. Although there are some inherent similarities between the two roles they are very different in nature.

To help clear things up a bit, in this video I'm going to cover the roles, tools, and expectations of day to day life for both jobs. At the end, I share a few opinions on which is right for you to pursue.
In a nutshell, UX design makes websites functional and UI design makes websites beautiful.
UX design, short for user experience design, is a very analytical process that is heavily based on research to find out how to design a a product in a way that it solves the customer's problem(s).

Love this video! Can't wait to start my masters in UX design soon :) I kind of went a 180 degree career swap from Dietetics -- but I'm convincing myself that nutrition is the basic building block for a healthy lifestyle/experience and UXD cognitively (like nutrition) can make life better - which plays a big part what I'd want to leave behind while I'm living. Also, creating, making people smile and feeling richer! It's also why I youtube on the side too ;)

I've found your videos super helpful so thank you! I'm currently looking at making a career switch into UX/UI design (previously an account manager at a branding agency). You and many others have said that often companies will expect the designer to do both UX and UI. I’m looking at doing a bootcamp online that ideally covers both, as I think when it comes down to it I’d be more interested in the UI side of things (I’m more of a visual person). However, a lot of the responsibilities of a UI designer sound similar to a graphic designer, and what I’m conscious of is that to get hired as a graphic designer in many agencies your expected to have a background degree in graphic design, something that takes 3/4 years to complete compared to a UI design bootcamp that could take between 3-9 months…does this not mean that either a degree is a massive time waster, or a UI design bootcamp is unrealistic and a waste of money? Also, do you know if companies treat a ‘UI designer’ role completely separately to say a ‘junior/senior designer’ position, therefore not having a background in graphic design isn’t an issue?
