So much good information here, but this video bizarrely omits that UX and UI designers are VERY often ONE combined role, especially at product companies like Spotify. It's not just that some roles have overlap - Product Designers are generally responsible for both UX and UI, including prototyping wireframes and mockups (and sometimes even some front end development and/or user research). As someone who has spent my career as a Product Designer, I can promise this is kind of essential information to provide.

However, in looking for open jobs just to see what the market looks like in my area, I find that most positions are titled ux/ui . I’ve yet to see just UI designer listed by itself in job listings. This is very important information to know for those who want to get into this field so they can know what they need to learn.

Great video explaining the differences in these two career paths. I'm a business analyst in a company with no UX or UI Designer, so I'm called on to do a little of both in my work. I enjoy the UI side of it more, but as an analyst, it is really important for me to understand the big picture including the user needs. I'd love to see another video that also splits out a BA role separately from these two as I'm working to get my company to see the need for these two concentrations.

What should I do if I have strong personal qualities of both careers and really enjoy both for different reasons?

  • @jignasha4

I want to learn about both. I am most probably leaning towards UX designer. I am willing to work hard and learn about UX and little bit of UI so I get the whole picture. I am leaning towards UX because 1- I love to design, 2- I like to work with people, 3 - I like to solve problem. Thank you Dee for explaining the difference between UX and UI. This field is totally new for me. I am trying to decide which one should I choose from these two and a graphic design.

I don't seems to understand this trade UX / UI. It seems to me a redundancy ...is more like laying out things to be press on a 5" x 4" screen. I think the critical part in this trade is the programming. I'm curious & wonder why the software engineer or the tech guy who is doing the coding can't can do it & cover such subject of this trade? Why need 2 tradesman to do 1 thing? If I am the boss, I will consolidate this 2 trade & just employ the software guys to do it rather than paying extra wages.

I disagree. Before the term "User Experience was adopted there was no confusion. Designers did research, writing, usability, information architecture, and user interface design. UI Design is simply a task within overall UX Design. All of these combined are the EXPERIENCE.

Does a careerfoundry ux course teach ui as well? I'm finding that there's more places that teach ux and not ui and im not sure if sure what to do. Does studying ux lead you into ui as well?

Hi, thanks for reaching out about this, we have to separate courses covering UX and UI respectively, however we have an advanced course that teaches UI to UX designers.
You can find more information on that course here: careerfoundry.com/en/courses/ui-for-ux-designers/ and if you would like to chat to a program advisor to talk over any specifics relating to our courses you can book a short call here: careerfoundry.com/en/connect/all-contact-advisor/

I build websites on the WordPress CRM for years and had no idea what UX/UI meant. I don't understand why these developers get paid so much. Most websites are cookie cutter with all that built in. Sounds like a bunch of bullchyte to me. There's only a few UX UI designs being implemented now, especially with the advent of cellphones.....bcoz there's only so much space.😕

God! Okaaaay, so I'm a Motion Graphics Designer & fluent video editor (I can also do animation).
I use Adobe Premiere Pro, Illustrator & After Effects.
So long as I can produce assets then does this qualify me as a UI Designer?
If so, where do I look for the jobs and what salary should I be expecting?
    Thanks.

In my portfolio, i have two ux\ui projects and the rest in branding, packaging, illustration and photography. I feel that i would be comfortable doing UI design but I would really like to learn and be a part of the UX process as I am passionate about finding creative concepts to solve problems.

    Question for you :
I am an hyper-introvert (my social battery is super limited) so UI design seems to be a better fit. How much presenting do you do as a UI designer ? Is it significantly less than UX design ?
Thank you for the content. Very informative !

    But great video

Information is either outdated or simply incorrect. Spotify doesn’t have UI designers, nor do most big tech companies.
The product manager will come up with a new feature or idea. The UX designers will create wireframes, full mock-ups, and prototypes of that idea using components created by the design systems team (think color schemes, fonts, button shapes, etc).
UX designers (also called product designers) at pretty much every major tech company will both design the visual UI and optimize the overall experience for the user.

I feel like a UXer can do UI but a UIer can't do UX. Does that make sense? Because the UXer will know why and for whom and what, but the UIer is only taking the information from UX and translating it visually (which is also important work!) But if I want flexibility, I would choose UX.

Quite the opposite really. Before UX was recognized as being able to be a totally separate job from UI, it was UI designers that had to consider the experience of at least the UI portion of a project(this is the part they talk about where UX and UI overlap). UX is a new career path when compared to UI because we've realized that expanding that thinking to the entire project rather than just the experience of the UI was something that could be highly beneficial. So you see UI designers have been doing UX before we even called it UX and they still have to do it as part of their jobs, its just that now we also know that tackling the full user experience is something that often its worth having a totally separate person for. Both jobs suffer from an looking intuitively easy from a perspective of an outsider or someone starting in the field, but to be good at either one it takes education, mentorship, and a lot of experience. Also UX being new is not fully adopted and often times still mostly being placed on the shoulders of UI designers, so you're more often going to find UI designers also doing UX rather than the other way around, or that UX is handled by a group of people that includes the UI designers, rather than by a single person.

Hi, I'm fresh out of high school and want to get into the UX/UI design field. I'm not exactly sure how to get from point A to point B though. I've heard there are a lot of different ways to get the education and skillset needed but I'm not sure what would be the most helpful. Does it make more sense to get a college degree in a related field or spend that time learning the skills on my own through things like bootcamps and RUclips tutorials?

I don't know, UX Design sounds like some junior level UI Designer that doesn't get to work on the actual thing and is instead a glorified idea machine. Wouldn't a proper UI designer take care of UX inherently already? What's the fluff for? Seems redundant.

  • @danglass2681

I found your descriptions of the two very enlightening. Though, I get the idea it's much more like a graphic designer compared to a production artist. The company that hires you probably wants someone with design/experience capabilities who doesn't mind doing the grunt work for someone who has already designed it. Or more to the point, if you are the one who does both, the employer wants someone who can do it all for the price of the one who does the grunt work. Is it like that? Do most UXers expect UIers to finish the work they created?
