the prototypes are interesting, they look less "scary" but more "mean" it's really cool to see the evolution. i drew 2 monster high books back in they day

You look phenomenal 💖 honestly Lily deserves the same recognition as Garret. Both are fangtastic designers and she deserves the spotlight too. I mean, she gave us some of the best eras of dolls. Myscene and Barbie back in the day….. icons 💅
I think she deserves credit, but ultimately things turned out like that for the better! Garret had that vision of freaky scary turned chick that i LOVED about MH and lily's style was just not giving that. I was a huge myscene fan before mh tho so i still love and respect her craft
I gotta say I really don’t love her comment “based on a story idea by some package designers” like Garrett Sanders contribution is nothing?!
@@jankk exacly! seems like she's brought up this topic too many times, trying to gain some attention when garret deserves most of the credit for what MH is today. Her doll sculpts are iconic and credit where credit is due, but the essense of MH was all Garret and his team
@@richarsfdzs.6680 I mean he was just showing off his first prototypes. It would be weird for him to show off someone else’s work, plus he may not have even had the photos of the first prototypes.
Whether it be in the dolls, animation, videogames, creatives being at the whims of big corporate is often really harrowing. Lily is a saint for staying so strong through it all and I'm Hoping that her finally starting to speak up about everything is healing for her in some way.
Also the far-right one of Lily's prototypes looks a bit like a scene kid Drac and I'm really here for it. I have a lot of love and nostalgia for the scene aesthetic, and while I love the designs we got in the end I think having a bit of scene kid flair would've been fun to mix into the lineup lol. We've already got some dated fashion in MH, why not add throw this in the mix too?

Welp, at the end of the day, the toy industry is massive and worth billions, so it has to operate like a business and business can be cut-throat! That being said, the humans that pour their ideas and creativity into generating this corporate wealth, need to get the proper respect and recognition that is well deserved. Glad Lily is able to tell her side of the story and be recognised and respected by the fans and collectors! 💛
I have a really hard time seeing her as the “designer” or “inventor” of Monster High simply because she designed the original, completely non monstrous sculpts. Don’t get me wrong, her dolls are really cute, and I’d totally buy them as edgy but NORMAL LOOKING fashion dolls! But there’s nothing spooky or scary about them in the least- and I don’t believe that monster high would have been any less successful on a different sculpt. Monster High was successful because girls like spooky/creepy stuff, and it’s an underserved market.

I get it but lily did design lagoona completely though! So she does deserve some credit.

Heyo! Sharing a bit of my experience here, I am a creative working at a toy company (a small one) and I have to say that its not easy to be an artist there, I often feel more like a laborer. Yes, it is a group project to design dolls. At the end of the day its hard to point fingers to who created what, because there are so many hands in the product before it is done. I have also lived through the focus tests with girls and its sometimes frustrating how the decisions this girls make are more important than the creative minds behind the designs. (Its not fun to have the design you think its worse being the one it ends up sticking because four year olds like "stars" and "pink" lol) Also a lot of the decisions are made by marketing teams, and people that are not artists nor do they understand how colors work. ( I am so tired of the " you should add more pink" just because girls like pink)
So If I feel it is bad in a small company, I can't imagine how it would be in a big one.
That's so interesting to hear, as a doll collector I thought the design process was all fun.
I wonder, have you tried telling them off? Like saying that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about and that just because a few girls don’t like it doesn’t mean anything? I feel like toy companies often put profits and marketing over creative. I think they’re being very stupid, because most times the creatives won over, the doll lines became iconic and recognizable, instead of the usual boring pink and pretty doll.

I was working alongside these two groups at exactly the time when MH was hatched. I can attest to the fact that there are many, many people involved in the development of these toy lines. We (designers) pump out tons of ideas, brainstorm concepts (even with other groups), make a million sketches and experiment a lot to even get to the point of showing our managers and get an opportunity to get the models in front of focus tests with kids. If you get a bad qualitative (the aesthetic value of the idea or concept) test, your concept could die on the vine. They also measure the quantitative (how much is it worth) value of a concept and to what age group the idea appeals to. This is where MH spent a lot of time exploring. The entire object of MH was to create a product that would appeal to older girls 10-12 who already phasing out of toys. MH nailed that in spades. Ironically, once they captured that group (and teens, adults and even boys), five years later, they didn't know what to do with it, changed the aesthetic to look much younger and try to appeal to younger girls.
I mean Lily and Adam are who we can thank for the silhouette and face molds of the doll line, but that's about it. Mayyyybe the makeup style as well?
To be fair MH is notoriously iconic for their face molds!
And she designed Lagoona and part of Cleo wave 1, I genuinely think that without Lily Mh would be so different
Okay, I love My Scene btw and hope they bring that back. I really like Lily's MH prototypes. I don't know if I like them as MH per se, but would as another line. I would totally buy them.
Very interesting. I hope that at somepoint everyone that was the original MonsterHigh team gets the recognition that they deserve. Her contribution is essential for what MonsterHigh has been and continues to be. I don’t remember Garrett saying that he was the sole creator of MonsterHigh just his concept as a brain child.
I would love to design a doll line, it looks so much fun. I have designs and ideas but we'll we what happens lol

Always and forever a fan… I love how transparent you are. Being scripted allows you to have structure… being non-scripted allows your charisma and personality to shine through. You don’t have to do just one thing. Different types of content may require different types of approach. 🤷🏽♀️

One of my favorite things about your scripted videos is how articulate you are, organized, and knowledgeable. Its super impressive, but non-scripted is great too, you are still very articulate and more entertaining.

Both prototypes were so cool I feel like hers would be more aimed at kids and his is probably more of an adult version of them.
I wish the clothes of the Monster High dolls were more similar to Lily’s work, but I do love Garret’s character designs more

I love this style of video, it really does feel more intimate. The comfort with being candid comes with time, I can understand your hesitantancy after everything the past couple years why you'd be reluctant but we love you ! This is really the content that hits. But ultimately it is YOUR channel so if you choose to go back to the scripted method I still fully support! Ok, I didn't work in a corporare environment but I've had my own experience of abuse in the workplace. I worked at a cafe where I got payed BELOW minimum wage in my country. I even designed menus for them and I was not payed extra nor credited for my designs.

I can definitely see that myscene design in early monster high. Kind of wish the doll line could get a revival too, i had one given to me because she shared the same irl name as me and i remembered her being very pretty with more subtle colors compared to the bright pinks of barbie.
To me it sounds like mattel is just being a typical corporation not caring about the teams behind their successes. But ill definitely give lilly lots of love she helped make a lot of our childhoods whether it be barbie, Myscene or monster high

Honestly, I wish they released or still release those dolls as a separate line. I think Monster High is good as it is but I would love to have those dolls in my collection since I love MH fashion, but I would of loved to see more scene style dolls.
