On Tuesday, June 28, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue will conduct a training house burn at 635 SE 18th Avenue. The Burn-to-Learn exercise will give valuable live-fire training in a residential structure to Hillsboro's newly-hired firefighter recruits, as well as the department's career and volunteer firefighters.
The Burn-to-Learn exercise will begin at 9am when Hillsboro Fire & Rescue training officers set small fires, one at a time, inside the house. Training officers will then accompany firefighters inside to extinguish the fires. The drill will be supervised by experienced, career firefighters and will adhere to strict safety guidelines. Firefighters have ensured that all that remains in the home is normal, non-hazardous building materials. Once the interior training is completed, the house will be allowed to burn in a controlled and safe manner. There will be teams of firefighters at the scene from beginning until all flames are extinguished.
Motorists can expect that traffic on SE 18th Avenue from SE Maple Street to SE Oak Crest Drive will be closed from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Hillsboro Fire & Rescue conducts these types of training burns a few times a year. Training Officer Jeff Gurske explains, "Live fire training exercises are especially valuable for Hillsboro Fire & Rescue's newest firefighters by allowing them to witness fire behavior and smoke conditions in a burning structure." Gurske added, "Firefighters are able to learn the capabilities of their equipment and apply tactics in a controlled environment."
The home used in this training exercise was donated by the owner to make way for future construction on the property.

The drone operator does an excellent job. You get an "ATTA-BOY"
thank you!
Must say great job keeping the drone away from those electricial wires that were right below it.......
that's the number 2 priority! number one is keeping a safe distance from personnel and fire equipment.
Definitely love the drone prospective! keep up the good work
This is a awesome perspective I have never seen a fire from before I used to run with volunteer crews in PA now Oregon is my home thanks for the video keep up the good work!
LTI IMO makes the best Tower ladders in the business Bar -None
Very cool and unique video. Keep up the good work:D
thank you!
Nice video... and decent flight time from that drone.
It will go about 23 minutes on a full charge
+Fire Videos nice. I've been considering getting a cheap one until I get used to flying them but 7 to 10 minutes of flight time isn't adequate for me. Nice to see they're getting better.
This one flies itself, there is very little to learn!
+Fire Videos I can't afford that type yet. :)
Thanks for sharing. 👍 ✌
+İlhan Arikan Thanks for watching! If you have a moment, share the video on social media!
Damn good video work...Kudos!
like the drone views
WHAT FLASHOVER?? it's past that point
Professional crew! Good work
That practice/controlled burn is missing a food truck and more chairs.
Rookie school, 1986, Texas. 105 degrees. We had a training fire like this one, with occupied homes on either side. I was scared to death! Lol. Please please please don't let this get away from us. And if it does, please please please don't let it be my fault!
Went off without a hitch!
Texas retired, 29 years.
I find it insane that any fire department would do this, anywhere.
+Emsnews Supkis Why is that?
It will be interesting to see how many more dumb comments will be made about why this fire wasn't attacked differently. It is right there in the description. It was a learn and burn, or for training purposes and not one that should be expected to be attacked in the form of "get it out". The attack to bushes and trees, among neighboring houses was to be sure they kept the training fire from spreading and damaging other things nearby, not because they cared about a tree more than a house. The house was meant to burn here.
Well maybe, just maybe it shouldn't say "structure fire" and "Flashover" in the video description... Maybe it should say "training fire" instead of being misleading.
I can agree with that, but at the same time, too many people click and watch without reading the description with details. So, yeah, the title could've been a bit different.
Yeah as far as I know we do not conduct training house fires in Australia. Even training car fires are not allowed in my urban area because of the pollutants. So it does surprise me that they have these types of events in the first place.
Many attack's are rather similar to this one. But sometimes less water.
Buena la toma !! Flojo el trabajo de los bomberos ya se se limitan a impedir que el fuego se propague pero hacen muy poco por apagar el foco del fuego. Más son los que miran que los que tiran agua !!
Must be trying to save a house or have a fire in the backyard the house on fire there not even putting out.
yes I understand I was a firefighter for 15 years but I was trained to put the biggest problem out first then deal with the small problems later so that's why I don't understand why they are going for the small fires first but whatever I'm not putting out this fire so..
They don't want to put the fire out, that's the whole point of it. They're burning it down so the owner can eventually clear the lot and build a new house.
I gotta agree with a previous comment, this is one helluva stupid location for a training exorcise. If I was a homeowner on either side I'd be raising bloody hell!!
I'm sure the homeowners would have to agree in some way to this happening.
Doing a training burn right next door to someone's home???? Who in their right mind would allow this?
+Emsnews Supkis There is very little risk
Fire Videos really? Little risk? What if something goes wrong. I’m assuming your a fire buff of some kind by your name . You know as well as any firefighter, fire is uncontrollable. If the house flares up just enough to ignite the house next to it, then what? Oops? I agree, shouldn’t have been done in a rural area, too many IF’s involved
@@glennhuber4975 They are protecting exposures it's really no big issue. It is to you because you just don't have the job knowledge to make a serious statement You just dumb.
nice video. very unique.
+1ytcommenter thank youd
Stop lying with the "flashover" in all you titles.
Or backdraft.
I don’t know, I wouldn’t have done a training burn this close to other houses. What if something went wrong, they lost control? Not to mention the smoke from the fire going into other homes? Not a well thought plan if oh ask me. And the fact they were given permission is even more questionable.
Yup, when you live next to a crack-house!
I want to know what kidn of Drone was that, because civilian ones don't have battery life like that....just saying...
it's a DJI phantom 3 standard. it has a 23 minute battery.
Why.cause this unnecessary air pollution? The house next door is gonna stink for a long time!!
I dont know if you have been back since this exercise was completed, but if you have, to this day, is that an empty lot now or have they actually startedbuilding a newer home on the site?????
I actually have not been back. I will have to take a look next time I am up there.
Control burn?
Burn to Learn
the funny thing is as a firefighter i didnt see a flashover and i didnt see a backdraft ANYWHERE in this TRAINING VIDEO !! the title should have been "Hillsboro Fire Dept. live fire training " stop lying in your titles or stop making videos... simple as that !!!!
Thats right they learned how to burn it like a true firebug.
are they trying to save the bushes? !!! what the hell put the house out!!! they got the ladder up but no water is going on the house?
A priority is always to protect exposures, but the hand line should have been able to handle that, including the bushes which could have flashed over. Not clear why the tower ladder focused on the same area instead of moving to the end of the fire building itself.
it was a controlled burn, even if it wasn't the structure was obviously abandoned and already destroyed. there's nothing to salvage in that house so it's better to just let it burn and make sure the fire doesn't spread and catch the rest of the neighborhood on fire because then they'll have a big problem
I NOTICE 2 LAZING FIREMANS JUST SITTING ON THERE CHAIR WHAT NO WORK FOR THEM
A controlled burn down is the only thing, what they can do with such a wooden dog-house. You need only a few particle or plywood panels to rebuild it. ;-))
chữa cháy kiểu này quá máy móc và bài bản ko cần thiết, vừa lâu, tốn nước mà ko có hiệu quả cao
I`m no fireman but even I can see that the ladder truck should be putting water on the fire instead o watering the lawn.
Read the description.
Ok Mark, I stand corrected.
I hope the owner of this property had brats & beer for them in the 2 wide party tent they had there the least he could do for the FD saving a lot of the cost of demolition & on the taxpayers dime & what did firefighters learn from this?
They could not swing the boom
well at least the trees got a drink dont worry bout the house thats burning down right next to them
Harry Mckenzie it was a training fire.. read the description before leaving your unnecessary input on something you don't know about. Thanks.
Only took 2 weeks to get a reply. must be nice having all these houses to burn down rather than help the homeless but still its only a training fire right
fyi i did read the description and i stand by what i said, it only took someone 2 weeks to respond to what i said and if its a training fire shouldnt they be learning to put it out rather than standing there watching it watering the trees, must be nice to have houses to just burn to the ground rather than do them up and let some homeless people have them. P.s love the name is that what you drive cause that explains a lot
They did train with the building and the next step is burning it to the ground. Help the homeless? Why is it the property owners job to do that? They want the house gone to build a new one and they donated that house to the FD to get rid of it. Win, win for everyone.
not everyone
does the guy operating the drone realize that flying it around the scene of an emergency is prohibited by the FAA, and is punishable by jail and a fine?
michael plays do you realize you can't read. This wasn't an emergency. SMH
Would have been hilarious if a water main had ruptured making them lose their water and then the neighbors house burned down too.... Dumbass firemen would have been there the next week sawing lumber and building them a brand new house.........
Do you know how hydrant systems work?
yep, they get their water from water mains.... One of those ruptures and your plug won't even drip water.........
rico334 what kind of dumbass liberal are you?
How about this scenario, the fire get a big enough gulp of air and it goes rouge. Just long enough to lite the house nest door up? I may not agree with the fire hydrant issue, but just a bad place to do a training burn
محمد نور
Youve got all that equipment and manpower to say nothing of money attack the fire not the bushes the commander on the scene should be fired.
Ron Harrison it's a training fire read the description ffs
Good thing it's training, Ron.
Can we fire Ron now, for not reading?
