    The first time I watched this video I thought it was interesting but couldn’t understand in which situation it could be useful… until this morning when a friend called me to rescue him.
    The car wouldn’t crank… then I remembered this video! Worked like a charm! Turned out it was a bad starter relay. I felt like a hero 😂😂😂😂 thank you for making this videos!!

      Good on ya. Also, if you don't have a paperclip, or want to use one, if you take starter relay out, and hit it a few times with a hammer or something ridged, you can get relay unstuck and work another handful of times.
      Also, sometimes the same relay is used for something no essential, such as the AC ,which you can swap in until you can acquire a replacement
      Source:Me, probably

    My Jeep has had a problem with intermittent NO start --- seems to be heat related but dealership cant figure it out. I have a new starter and a new TCM. Still, the same problem. THANK YOU for this awesome video that even I (a woman) can understand... thank goodness I won't be stranded for hours ever again.. the best part of your video is your diagram. It will help me track other issues that I didn't know were related to the starting process...blessings to you!

    My first car a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass (gutless) wouldn't crank when turning the key. I hooked a wire straight to the starter terminal and left it under the hood. To start the car I would have to put the key in the ignition, turn it to ON and pop the hood. Then I would touch my custom starter wire to the positive battery terminal and sparks would fly every where and the car would crank and start. I gotta a lot of funny looks while doing that.

      Norm T: I tried swapping the relay with another one and it didn't fix it. I think it was the neutral switch that was the problem. It miraculously started working properly on it's own after a month or so.

    • @carlzimmerman8700
      @carlzimmerman8700 7 лет назад +3

      Klingensmith AutoTech A short in the ignition switch would cause the starter to crank continously, or if it was a short to ground it would blow the ignition fuse, cause a fire, drain the battery etc etc. Didn't have any of those problems, like I said it was most likely a faulty neutral switch.

    My 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van has a no crank no start condition or a "Open" condition. I used a remote switch
    to test the starter to the solenoid which deemed the starter as good. With the key in the Run position and the remote
    starter switch utilized the van will not run. Cranks only. I am leaning towards an issue at the key lock switch. Watching your video gave me the insight to try the jump at the relay as that will test the wiring from the power distribution center to the solenoid and eliminate that side of circuit as an "Open" however will need to also confirm the signal at the Engine Control Module. More troubleshooting to continue for my (No crank no start Van) What is
    so weird about all this as I drive it daily with over 300k miles on it. This last Wednesday I parked it for about an
    hour and went to get in it and go and nothing. So it has been a mystery to me as why that happened after driving it
    under a shade tree to park. Guess that is why I am a shade tree mechanic. Got lucky about that parking as it is now hot here.

    People seemed entirely too confused by this video and the fact that he had a key.
    This presumes there is a starting problem to diagnose, not that you lack a key and need to use JUST a paper clip. That is the premise. If you have your key and can start the car with it, you wouldn't be poking around with a paperclip in the first place as you would NOT have a starting problem to diagnose. It is rather simple, and he explained it beautifully.
    If you start the car with the key, it closes the relay switch in the process. If that all works, you system is fine and you wouldn't need to pop out the relay, play with paperclips or anything. But if you turn your key and nothing happens, you might want to rule out one half or the other. Less parts to play with makes fixing a problem faster and smarter.
    The paperclip isolates half of the system. If you can turn on your control modules with the key and start the car with the paper clip, you have just ruled out the starter, the wires to and from the battery, starter, and fuse/relay box, and have either a bad relay or something on the OTHER half of the system.
    Even if you just replaced the relay (without testing the old one), you would not know IF the relay was actually bad unless the car then starts. If the car still won't start with the new relay, you probably just replaced a perfectly good relay. That is the brainless way to fix (not diagnose) a problem (start replacing parts until it works).
    If you lack a key, THAT is itself a MAJOR factor in not being able to start your car. LOL. One would first replace the key by going to the dealer or would replace the lock cylinder and get a new key that way. Then you can at least start the car without hot-wiring (which he mentioned) if everything else is good. The point is that if you do NOT have a key, and think you have starting issues, you probably need to get a key first as lacking one IS a starting issue.

      Jimmy disconnecting the battery won't kill the car as long as the alternator is good, like if you have a junk battery that needs a jump all the time its literally just as good as no battery, so disconnecting a battery won't kill the car unless that alternator is bad, a way to kill it is to cut off the spark to the engine, or to cut the fuel off

    If you get in your car, put the key in the ignition and you have power, radio and all other accessories then try to start the car and you dont even get a solenoid tick, i'd bet it's the solenoid (or so little power it wont even kick the solenoid).
    If you get into your car and you have no power at all, well it's most likely your battery.... (if the battery is fully charged and you have no power still, you've got yourself a bit of an electrical problem)
    If you try and crank the motor and it keeps cranking but you get no start, it's probably fuel pump or ignition.
    If you try to start the car and your solenoid on the starter ticks but the starter wont turn over it's possible the starter itself has a dead spot in it or maybe not enough power to turn the starter over. sometimes if you keep trying it'll eventually work, smacking it with a hammer sometimes works (enough of a nudge to get it out of its deadspot), or you try bump starting.
    Let me know if i missed anything, i trust the internet will. lol

      wont work on most cars worth stealing, actually pretty much all cars wroth stealing this wont work on, even so, if its an automatic transmission, the wheel will lock when you try to turn. Also, most people dont leave their hood open when they park somwhere, making this a really piss poor way to hotwire a car.

    • @seanerobertson32
      @seanerobertson32 7 лет назад +5

      The most someone would be able to do without either having the key in the on position or hotwiring the car would be wear down the battery, as the ignition circuit would not be on and the starter would just crank with no "fire" from the spark plugs.

      you have to have the car on b4 it starts. you cant just go and put the paper clip to a starter solenoid and bam it on.

    My car doesn't get enough power through the key to start the car so There's a switch that's connected directly to the starter relay. It only starts with the key on the 3rd Position so if the car gets stolen it won't go nowhere and besides the fact people that steal Cars don't know how to drive stick.... lololololol

      My 99 Ram 1500 was stolen, They used a screwdriver, in the door lock to get in, then also used it in the ignition. Went out last December to go to work, and my truck was gone. At least the RCMP got the crack heads, later that evening. '60's Mopars, run a jumper cable from the battery terminal, to the coil positive, no steering column lock. I don't know how far you'd get before the electronic ignition module would get fried. Because you are bypassing the ballast resistor, and that ignition system can't handle 12 volts to the coil

    there was a time when I had to start my 91 samurai from the electric starter motor, i liked doing that with unnecessarily big stuff, like a crowbar or an axe, since i did have a shitload of tools in there, and that was a fun show for whoever was around. I replaced the ignition switch with some buttons since then. But this wouldn't work on modern cars with chip keys.

  • @msgcheckout
    @msgcheckout 8 лет назад +9

    I am badly confused, why would anyone want to use a paperclip to start a car, especially when you also need a key in the ignition, so why not make it even simpler, if you turn your key one step further it will start your car, and no need for a paperclip or removing any relay.

    • @myRatchets

      you dont need the key watch the entire video or my video on whether you can hotwire a car.

    • @msgcheckout
      @msgcheckout 8 лет назад +2

      true, if you can bridge ignition circuit and then use paperclip, you can, but you won't drive very far as the steering won't turn, secondly if your car has an immobiliser, it won't fire up either.

      It's a way to tell if your key ignition is bad or if you have a wiring problem.

    • @Rain_Zima
      @Rain_Zima 8 лет назад

      if you add a power line to a ACC line in the fuse box you don't need a key (unless you have a chip or VATS) so bridge a always hot line to acc then use the paper clip to start the car then your golden. this is obviously bad for the electrical system and should never be done but criminals do it.

    this trick does work, but in some cases will fry your fingers when said paper clip goes from room temp to red hot in a matter of nanoseconds.... he used a fairly thick paper clip and got lucky... if he used a smaller paper clip he would have got burned too.... the easiest thing to do is just short the small wire terminal to the big wire terninal on the starter it's self with a small screwdriver, this fires the solenoid which fires the starter and all fingers are safely out of harms way if things get hot
