Thank you for the tutorial. Helpful tip: Glue a piece of batting over the prongs of the magnetic snap and then fuse the outer fabric to the foam. Those prongs will wear through that cotton very quickly.
This is a great tip! I spent hours making an elaborate needle book and used these snaps. It started to pull through the cotton in no time. So sad! Will definitely do this next time!
Don’t use a seem ripper to cut the holes!! Fold along the mark and use embroidery scissors to snip the hole. If you do use a ripper place a pin along the top edge so your ripper has something to stop against or you could rip far more than you planned!😢
I just received this pattern today. I am a novice when it comes to bag making. I love how concise the instructions are. But after reading them, I came to YT to see if there was a tutorial. Your tutorial shows me visually and verbally, and that is a great way for me to learn, alongside written instructions. Thank you.
Misty, I am called "the bag lady" because I sew so many bags. I just ordered the pattern and I will make several bags, one for me and several to give as gifts. I love all your tutorials!
It’s 3:10 pm in San Antonio TX! This bag is awesome and I’m going to make this bag for my sister who crochets. Some of the interior pocket areas will be adjusted for her crochet hooks, patterns, etc. And, of course I’m going to make this for me as well! A little tip-after sewing the inside pockets together and before top stitching, press the seam open using steam if necessary. Fold together and press again. You won’t need to roll the seam-it will lay flat for topstitching!
I love that you made this bag for a crocheter. I made it for my Secret Santa exchange who crochets. I adjusted the two side pockets to hold her crochet hooks.
I like those nice wide straps. I tend to overload my bags with everything in the sewing room, then the narrower straps cut into my shoulder from the weight. Wider straps distribute the weight so they don’t cut in so much. I know, take less stuff. But then there’s always something I need but didn’t bring! 😊
5:15 After ironing in the 2nd fabric, before quilting, put a small square of painters tape over the snap to remember not to quilt there. When I quilt I get in a zone and would forget to pay attention! Or I'd pre-mark the quilting pattern to make sure I avoided the magnetic snap. 💖🌞🌵😷
@@jeanmezera , something to make it stand out, for sure! ... For instance, when I sew a pillow, I have to celebrate the start/stop marks so I don't close up the hole... I hate ripping out! And hitting that snap will surely break a needle! Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷 (chilly today only 66f, rain tomorrow.)
Great idea about the blue tape. Years ago I introduced my guild,to a tool called a Hera marker - I’m thinking/remembering? that it’s a Japanese tailor marker - it just leaves a nice crease but not a permanent crease - just enough to see and sew through.
@@sandybruce9092 , clover still sells them. My mom used one when I was itty bitty and I think I still have hers. You can use it with a ruler to draw "lines" (more like faint creases), but I remember that she also used it with tracing paper instead of the tracing wheel with the sharp points... The advantage of using the hera is the faint creases (something like a ballpoint pen leaves on the page underneath) instead of all those holes. I don't use it for marking as you suggested because I can't see the crease under the needle... the light is wrong. 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you so much for this tutorial Misty. My sister-in-law and I belong to a Craft Group at our Church where we make goods to sell at Community Fairs 3 - 4 times per year to raise money for Charity. I made myself a large tote bag for carrying fabrics and in progress Quilts plus another Block Carrier bag with large side pockets (1 for my Oliso folding Cutting Mat, the other for carrying my Longer and/or Larger Rulers. There's also divided pockets inside). These bags are much admired by the Craft Group ladies - the exteriors are patchwork. S-i-Law said she'd love a knitting bag made along similar lines and you have provided the perfect bag. The large zip pocket internal bag is perfect for storing knitting needles etc. and the snap-fastened section is perfect for patterns and the like. Thank you again.
So nicely done. Misty always get a ‘thumbs up’ from me but for once I must comment that this is a superb example of your expertise and a very well done video. Thank you!!❤🎉
I just made this bag. It was actually pretty easy. I bought the patter but this video made it all make perfect sense. The only are struggle I had was with sewing the binding on. The throat on my machine isn’t really big so sewing the straps on was a struggle as well. Next time I make it I will try sewing the straps on before putting it together. Still this big was amazing, it is a secret Santa exchange gift.
I love this bag! Thank you for the tutorial! However, I wish you would have shown how to do the outside binding! You didn’t say how much material to use or how to put it on. I hope you can do a follow up on a few of the things everyone is suggesting! Thank you!
Beautiful bag and great tutorial! I love making bags and can't wait to try this one but I do hope you do a follow up video on how to do the binding. Thanks Misty!
Very nicely done. However for those of us who are not familiar with binding bags this way it would be nice to have a tutorial on this. Do you have any links demonstrating this method?
I made this bag and will use it so much! I am also tall, so the long straps are great! I visited MSQC in the summer a few years ago and had the last souvenir line in a fat quarter pack. I made a scrappy version and it turned out so cute! I wish I could share a picture here!
I recommend double stitching the bottom seams and side seams of the tote for extra reinforcement, especially if you plan to use heavy objects in the tote. It will last longer and hold its shape better. I agree with others that a zipper close for the top of the tote would also be helpful. Good tutorial!
"Ask me how I know. " ... haven't we all been there! I think the neighbours heard me laugh. This is a great bag, and I don't make bags, think about this one, though. Hugs to all, Chel 🌸
19:57 I'm always terrified to use the seam ripper, so I get it started with the ripper to make a tiny hole and then use small scissors to fine tune the slits. 💖🌞🌵😷
Hi Misty thank you for this great tutorial and I love the comment about the pickers going in the same direction. I felt your pain and also laughed because I needed that little comment. Keep taping this great gems. 👏
I’m seeing this bag in some purple batiks with maybe greens, turquoise in!!!! I love the new MSQG fabrics and am waiting for the background white with stars to become available! I NEED that fabric😄😄😄😄
Misty ! I love the big tote! Have you considered making a kit with everything needed to make the bag? I was just a little overwhelmed trying to order everything! Thanks for all the great ideas
OK - still at the beginning and wondering where the snap comes in - sounds like it’s the zippered part - not sure if I will use that part or not. Most of my small sewing goodies are in small containers or pouches.
Thank u so much for this video. I’m making a tote very similar to yours but I use a brown paper bag. I was praying to find something similar to it so I could attach the bottom without the bulk.
Good questions about the binding - wondering if it’s the traditional 2-1/2” width (I use a bit narrower myself) or???? Maybe the size is in the pattern which I just ordered (digital) so I can read it before purchasing any fabrics!!!
Good Evening Misty, This is perfect timing as I am planning to make myself a bag. This looks about the same size I was planning to make, too. Great Job. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you very much for this tutorial. I hope you have a wonderful week❣️👍🥰 Chris
Misty thank you for the video. I can NOT seem to finish this project because I can NOT get the binding on. Please do a follow up video walking is through adding the binding and finishing it out. I will put this project away until you post an update for the binding. I can’t wait to finish this project.
I always wanted to make a large pckety bag like this where I can carry everything I need it's really relaxing to look at pretty you and your hands lovely in their nude polish
Boy, what a job. I don't think you show enough of the sewing. You didn't mention placing the pocket on the bottom, then mark for your snap. When you attached the bottom you didn't give us tips on going all around. That was a job. So now i am on the binding and straps. I love the bag, but i think 6" sides and bottom would be easier. The inside pocket is great. Love the design. I taught myself to quilt with Jenny. I can look at most quilts and figure out how to make. I say thisvso you know i am not a new quilter. Please try to think of the Jenny Quilters in your future tutorials. God Bless
Loved the bag but as I see in the comments, lots of people like myself would like more information on the binding. Straight or bias, width and how you applied it in which order?
In the first step when the Bosal is fused to the lining, I am confused about how this would work when the interfacing is double sided. How did you manage to fuse just one side of the double sided fusible interfacing to the fabric? You can't iron on the fusible side of interfacing, so how did this work?
I bought this bag as a gift for my mom and she's been using it every day since. She loves how roomy it is and how it can hold all her daily essentials. Thanks for creating such a versatile bag, 84Hoods

You’re exactly right! Same thing I suggest. 😊
Thanks for this hint. I’m curious - is a snap really necessary? For some reason, I just don’t use them even if whatever I’m carrying has them.
Don’t use a seem ripper to cut the holes!! Fold along the mark and use embroidery scissors to snip the hole. If you do use a ripper place a pin along the top edge so your ripper has something to stop against or you could rip far more than you planned!😢
Would have loved to see you do the binding. That's the part I was most curious about how to do and how to finish on the ends.
Also sewing all around the bottom of the bag.

Great idea - I’m always trying to find Christmas gifts for a special group of friends (about 3). But will try making the bag for myself first!!!!!
Maybe having the pattern gives more information

I would probably draw my first line on both sides of the snap and go out from there,

Please, did you use that real stiff craft Tex or the foam?
Wonderful tutorial, Misty. I hope I have time to make one in the next couple of days. I can’t wait to use one of my pretty zips.

I’m not sure about using/needing a snap and a zipper - it’s just me and not wanting to fool with those closures that I probably would use anyway.
"Ask me how I know. " ... haven't we all been there! I think the neighbours heard me laugh. This is a great bag, and I don't make bags, think about this one, though. Hugs to all, Chel 🌸
Adorable large bag Misty! Can’t wait to make it. 💖💖💖 thanks for the great tutorial!!!
Thanks for showing how to measure for magnetic snap placement as I hadn't seen it before!!! Great close-up camera work for that, too!
I wish she would have shown how to bind the bag, too. Great video. I will be making this bag. I bought the pattern. Thanks Misty 😊

Great tutorial! Love this large bag, it will be very helpful taking all sewing items to retreats! Thank you !
Awesome Bag. Love the fabric you used. This will be great for a quilting retreat I'm attending. Thank you for sharing this.
Love all of your tutorials! Wish I could see inside the bag. So the zippered part can come out because it is attached with the snap?

Amazing tip about cutting out the corners on that bottom panel , I wish I knew that before , thank you so much .
how are the ends of the binding finished?

Love the bag!! ❤
