- Join us as we visit Ohrid, North Macedonia - one of Europe's best-kept secrets!
Ohrid is a town in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, lying on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Together they make the most bustling tourist destination in the country.
Ohrid is famous for having 365 churches over the centuries - one for each day of the year - hence why the town is known as the Balkan and European Jerusalem. The entire Ohrid region is protected by UNESCO under the world heritage program.
We entered the country through the Serbian-N. Macedonian border. The only thing we needed to show was the Green card for the car and we were on our way to Ohrid.
A good thing to know is that there are tolls on the road - the prices are not so bad though, varying between 1 and 2 Dollars per toll. We couldn’t find an ATM at the gas station, but luckily they were kind enough to charge our card and give us some cash back (something you don’t often see in other European countries).
After almost 3 hours on the road, we finally reached Ohrid. We checked in at a cozy place in the downtown area, called City Inn, which was going to be our home for the next few days.
The next morning, we decided to take a walk to the waterfront. As we explored the center and the old part of the town, we realized why Ohrid is also known as the Pearl of Macedonia.
One, because of the picturesque views, and two, because of the actual pearls you can find all over the town. (There are several old families that produce the famous Ohrid pearls, but the true authentic technique is a well-kept secret.)
Here, we met Zoran, the programmer we have worked with for the past two years and visited his office.
We ended the day with some card tricks and a delicious dinner with our friends.
On day 2, we visited Samuel’s Fortress. On our hike up, we ran into an amazing ancient amphitheater that was used for festivals and gladiator fights. Today, it's home to the most prestigious summer music, dance, and theatre festival in North Macedonia.
Samuel’s Fortress was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire and 10 centuries later, it’s still standing strong. The view from the top is breathtaking and it only costs 1 Euro to enter (make sure to bring cash).
Within the fortress walls, we found one of the most important archeological sites and holy grounds in N. Macedonia - Plaoshnik.
As we climbed down, we were amazed by the beauty of the lake and had the chance to see the most photographed church in North Macedonia, St. John the Theologian at Kaneo.
Next, we visited the church of St. Sophia, built in the 11th century. This place is of monumental value for Macedonian culture, architecture, and history.
We decided to end the day in the company of our dear friends we met back in 2014 and have some delicious food at a local restaurant.
Ohrid is truly a destination not to be missed. Be sure to add this hidden gem to your European wish list.

Macedonia is amazing country, full of ancient mysteries
Don’t apologize - we like it when others call it Makedonija.
It's Sill Macedonia to me! The Greeks made a mountain out of a mole hill on the issue.
MACEDONIA IS THE BEST❤️🇲🇰🙌🏼 LOVE MY COUNTRY❤️
Honestly this almost made me cry
IM A MACEDONIAN
Ahh. I hope in a good way. You must miss your country.
Come back again
With love from Macedonia♥️
Chloe your so funny explaining the toilet situation 😂

I'm hungry now 🤤
Thanks so much 👍🏾 that was awesome.
I’ll let her know. 😂😂 it’s definitely the place to see beautiful churches.
Just Macedonia!!!!!!!!!
Your curly hair when you were introducing the video was cute. Macedonia has a cool flag. When you arrived there you all were all bundled up as if the car had no heater.
Back in Europe, North Macedonia; the history must be amazing. Breath taking scenery too, a very special place. Thank you for taking us along. Kiwi from Virginia
Every single street you walk down is so ancient and has a story to tell. This is definitely a place we want to go back to to spend more time and get to know it more.
I bet North Macedonia is nice too. But this video is about Southwest Macedonia which is where Ohrid is!!! Greetings from a British-based Ukrainian!
Thank you so much for uploading this video! I was waiting for it for a long time. After this video, I have added Macedonia to my bucket list😀
BTW, There's a sad news from India, despite all the vaccination done in all over India, COVID cases in some states are still increasing and other variants of COVID-19 are detected. So I want to tell that don't take this virus lightly and follow all the precautions and safety protocols. Stay Safe ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed Ohrid! Thanks for sharing what’s going on in India. It’s so surreal still what’s going on all over the world. Keep safe where you are too.
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders Thank you so much ❤❤
Beautiful Macedonia, the homeland of Alexander the Great 👍👍❤
Yes! It’s a beautiful country. Wait until you see all the statues in our next video from Skopje.
His not from North Macedonia. He Was born in pella.
@@hellas1052 Hahaha yes but Pella was a Macedonian city before... That means he's Macedonian :). Greetings
@@ZurioSi this has nothing to do with the Slavic speaker's of skopje 😂 ancient Macedonia spoke Greek Alexander's was known to spread Hellenic culture in India Persia Egypt. He competed in Olympic games which a Greek only could he believed in the Greek gods he was the one that united the city states in ancient Greece to fight the Persians.
@@hellas1052 Modern day greeks are Turks , Albanians and mixture of other cultures. Nothing in common with ancient greeks. Bow to the Sultan turk
very beautiful video. thanks pattons.
Most welcome! So happy you’re coming along on our journeys!
You should definitely visit the small town of Kratovo. Its one of the oldest cities on the balkans with 500 year old bridges and towers. Also, they are a lot of local food specialties that are only exclusive for this part of the country 🤗
Sounds wonderful! North Macedonia is beautiful.
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders MACEDONIA PLEASE CAN YOU REMEMBER THAT?
You are not Macedonians, Slavs are individuals

Hey guys at the time I visited it was the Republic of Macedonia because of the confusion on where alexander the gr8 was actually born, none the less I had awesum time there gr8 vlog😎
There is no confusion, Alexander was born in Pella Greece..
@@traveler9283 yeah it was a few years ago now I think our tour guide was abit dodgy aswell, just wanted our money hehe
@@traveler9283 Pella is in MACEDONIA , not in Greece ! today is under greek ocupation sinds 1913 ! before 1913 no single piece Macedonian soil was under the greek rule !

Hola! 🇲🇽
Organic food I love it
Love your videos and family! But when you are in an off the beaten trail place like Ohrid, maybe a minute of practical info like how to get there, where to stay. Etc. Thanks
Good morning growing🙂
Morning!
I was in a same hotel in Skopje with my girls, wew years ago 😁
Oh that’s funny. When we were there is was the end of the busy season so there wasn’t hardly anyone there.
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders yes, we were at September 2019, pre-covid misanscene.
I like how they recreated waterfront , some buildings existed pre- earthquake 1963. some are new. Pseudo clasicistic , a bit kitchy, but it looks nice to me.
You know, I have spent one year, as a soldier in Skopje , 1980/1981 and city were neglected and not very nice.
That idea to build in fashion of 18/19 century neo classicism , really changed a face of a city and , being simple man, it suits me well . I like it.
And Ohrid, off course , it's lovely. Only, when hit the beach, fresh water with zero salt confuses me 😁
Great video. Btw its always Macedonia , from the start, there is not know older name than that, for those regions than Macedonia.
Thanks! For us it’s still Macedonia too 😉
Hello julian thanks i m looking
Imtiiaz
This is Macedonia, NOT NORT
Good morning family 🌻🇧🇷
Good morning José
So gorgeous❤
Hi from Curitiba
It will always be Macedonia
I hear you...
Hi guys been missing you, where have you been lately, the girls are growing big, what an experience, write your own geography text book
this was not part of bulgaria
Hi, you have great videos. Please give me advice how you decide what to visit in each location? Do you use internet/ google and or travel groups and tourist guru feedbacks or something else? How much you contact local people before coming (except accommodations purposes)? Happy miles with sunny weather on your roads.
We sometimes do a lot of research before we visit a place by simply googling it. Other times, we go a little ill-prepared and discover as we go but mostly we plan it out.
Meeting locals usually happens as we’re there unless we already know people.
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders Thank you for feedback. I also use similar way. If you need info about next destinations (see below) do not hesitate to contact me (Former Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, European part of Russia, India). Happy miles to your family.
Salut vă doresc numai bine. Succes
only MACEDONIA never North
I hope I am not wrong in thinking there was a War in that part of the world a few years ago, but from the video its peaceful, good thing.
Nice... when was this filmed. I don't see anyone wearing masks or worried about C19. Was this film before covid or don't they care in Macedonia?
The less people care, the less it affects them. The more society sucks up to its authorities and tries to pretend Covid is the new plague is the more infections and deaths you get. Funny that.
Where’s your husband? How come we never see him? It will be nice if you make a video telling us about your family, what kind of work you and your husband do, everything about your family, that will be great!
Macedonia never north and never Greek!
when Mazedonia is so nice, why all the people are leaving from there?
I"m not sure. I have friend who have lived there for many years.
economical reasons .
Because of economics reason we go for work in eu contries . But most of us come back it not because we don't like our country
Come to kosovo too🇽🇰🥰
ONLY MACEDONIA - МАКЕДОНИЈА
It's not Macedonia , this name is been stolen from Greece , so the name must be Skopjie . And also because i am from bulgaria the language is similar with the bulgarian language and its not Macedonian
M A K E D O N I J A ime od BOG MAKEDON. pred 30 veka.
Do not make that mistake..your country under the Prespa agreement, which your government has signed and your parliament voted in favour states that you are North Macedonia and you have nothing to do with ancient Macedonia.Your history books will follow,it will all change as well under the agreementin ,in order to teach you the right staff. Ancient Macedonia is related to greek culture,as all ancient artifacts found even in north Macedonia, speak for themselves!!
I’m not sure if this is directed to me or the citizens of North Macedonia. For us we know it as Macedonia just because this is what it was called the first time we visited. I know there’s a lot of people upset about this but no need to focus on this since it’s already changed names so that everyone is or should be happy now.
Idiot Macedonia had a referendum and by law needed 50% to change the name. They only got 30%. But the NAZI EU and Nato forced them to change the name. Modern day greeks are mixture of turks , Albanians and others. Bow to your Sultan turk. Hello from Australia.
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders don't reffer our country north macedonia most people will get upset . Just say macedonia
Prespa agreement is not legal ! acording to the Macedonian Constitution only th Macedonian President is aloud to sign that kind of agreements , not the Foreign affears minister !
@@ohrid59mk76 never forget.. Germany and USA is your friend!!
Please, don't call my country, (north)... only MACEDONIA place. This name imposed by force, and against the will of the people. Over 1000 political prisoners lie in prisons for that name. Please respect the people of my country MACEDONIA.
