After 2.5 years of continuous operation this clock had its first malfunction today. One note of the chimes quit working. Turned out the brass "tab" that connects the monofilament actuator to the hammer broke off where it was soldered. Easy fix, all good now. I'm actually surprised it ran this long without any mechanical problems!

It’s not how it works. If you see some real mechanical clocks you would be surprised they chime 3MINIUTES later than the hour... itself
Or sometimes 2 miniutes early.....
That chime speaks to my soul in ways I can't describe.

This reminds me of my grandmother's house. The grandmother on my dads side has an old clock that sounds just like this. I miss going there because if covid. But just listening to these chimes, I can fully map out the entire house.
This is incredible. A steampunk Nixie version of the old chiming mantel clocks that were everywhere back in the day, but without the winding once a week! I wish I had the skills to build something like this.
I love Westminster chime melody because the clock seems to pray for those who works hard with much risks to protect them against any danger. The clock prays for them at every quarter hour.

Built a Nixie tube clock myself back in about 1972. Mine didn’t have any chimes I though. I like yours a lot!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of tech I've seen and heard. Thank you!
I love many types of clocks, and the look and sound of this is absolutely gorgeous! Very Nice timepiece!
Beautiful sounding chime, nice clock with a blend of vintage and modern.
WOW it looks so steampunk!
My Nan and Grandad had a simple grandfather clock with no details on it at all. But the sound that came out was the same as this but very loud, it was wonderful.
a glow discharge of nixie tubes is mesmerizing
I like the combining of old world digital and analog...nicely done!
Wonderful! Also like the way you have mounted the Nixie Tubes.
Now I found the style I want for my Nixie project! This is pure awesomeness...
My dad had an old harmel regulator clock with a banjo style pendulum and it did the same chime. I remember falling asleep to the chimes very relaxing.
This clock is SOOOOOO cool!!! I like the deper on the hour gongs!!!
This, this is some beautifull nixie art!
Very nice clock. Love the chimes, nixie tubes, and construction.
Regardless of where or who you are, this is possibly the most British thing I've ever seen.
Excellent craftsmanship.
Thank you! Those are Hermle chime rods and hammer assy that I bought for this project and then modded to suit my needs. This project was a "make it up as you go, based on available parts" thing - surprised it turned out as good as it did - will make another one some day using what I learned from this one.
If you haven't checked out the Construction Pix link in the description yet, I highly recommend you do.
What’s the symbol that is on the base of the rods, also what is The model number?
@@IvanTimber Surprisingly I was able to find my invoice. Bought from perrinwatchparts (dot com). Catalog numbers 73-810 (rods) and CP-0691 (hammer assy). Those are Perrin's SKUs, actual Hermle P/Ns unknown. Sold as parts for "Hermle FHS 340.020 movement".
There is no symbol on the rod base that I can see. Are you seeing a reflection maybe?
@@sootikins nope, chime rods usually have a serial number on the block in front, and the tone just wondering because they sound awesome!
Also thanks! I’ll take a look
@@IvanTimber I've just done a thorough inspection of the block and there are no numbers. Only place I didn't look at is the bottom of the block because that would require disassembly. The audio of this video (recorded with camera mic) does not do justice to the sound of the rods. They sound much warmer/fuller in person. They sound a bit "clanky" to me on the vid.
Nice clock! It has beautiful chimes!
Very cool! I have a grandmother clock that can play this chime and It sounds awesome just like this one
Oh!! congrats on your build. Cool.
Wonderful mechanism, very well done indeed.
Beautiful chimes.
I thank God for You. Love, Light, Peace, Music and Joy
I've Never Seen A Clock Like That Before!
April 16 2023
Fantastic, I'd forgotten about clock chimes. Looking on ebay for some chime rods...
That's a beautiful clock, well done!
Thanks!
Sootikins how did you hook the chimes up to work with the nixie board
There are solenoids under the top cover. Microcontroller outputs fire the solenoids thru MOSFET driver circuits. Solenoid plungers pull "strings" that raise the chime hammers. You can sort of see strings toward end of this video. See entire setup taken apart at eeberfest.net/gallery.php?set=clock
@@sootikins GOOD
Very ingenious. Fantastic
WOW! New clock technology! Don't even have to wind it! So cool!! I want that clock!
Very nice work. Thanks. Cheers.
This is really great!
It is pretty neat. Especially with mantel or bracket chimes.
0:56 Norfolk and Western 611: *looks at clock* Oh my goodness. It’s time for me to go.
Gotcha. Thanks. Really neat timepiece
I love ❤️ 💕 that sound of that clock ⏰
verry cool clock looking both olden n new
Love those chimes.
Outstanding work! Only a thing to make it perfect: convention in clocks is that the first strike of the bell coincides with the hour (00m00s). Nothing hard to fix :)
Thanks. And yeah, I fixed the first strike error a long time ago after a couple British guys on a clock forum were giving me a hard time about it using Big Ben on New Years as their proof. :) The first *bong* of the bell marks midnight...
Sootikins: Westminster chimes should start 18 seconds before the top of the hour.
Just saw this - so much for notifications :( Thanks for that piece of info. At present my chimes start 15 sec before the hour and the first strike hits right at 00 sec. I guess my chimes are playing a bit faster than they should. I think I'll change it for authenticity sake.
That is a well-made clock :) Very nice.
Thank you!! It's still going strong now in December 2017. Has been in continuous operation since some time early 2012. Guess I got something right xD
You're welcome, and nice to hear :)
Cool design
Hey I Like that Nixie Clock Because it Counts up the Numbers!
Best I've seen!
Beautiful.
It's one of the most beautiful things i ever saw in my whole life...
Even I taught that
This is amazing =)
It looks abd sounds beautiful =)
Часы просто отпад))) Ты молодец)
What tha hell awful?
Oh man that's awesome.
Beautiful
AWESOME!
woooow very cool nice work!!!!
What I was saying was that the chime seemed to pause for a second between each bar.
I am used to the Westminster chime timing of Big Ben/The great clock in London.
***** We are talking about the same thing then: your "pause" is my "dotted half note". I notice that the chime doesn't sustain the sound for the entire dotted-half interval in the video, thus the apparent pause. In its present version (faster overall tempo) it sounds considerably better.
There are a lot of variations of Westminster in use in all sorts of clocks with lots of little differences. But I have to agree that Big Ben is kind of like the "authoritative" version, in which case mine is "wrong".
1st chime: 12h 00m 17s
2nd chime: 12h 00m 20s
3rd chime: 12h 00m 22s
4th chime: 12h 00m 25s
5th chime: 12h 00m 27s
6th chime: 12h 00m 29s
7th chime: 12h 00m 32s
8th chime: 12h 00m 34s
9th chime: 12h 00m 37s
10th chime: 12h 00m 39s
11th chime: 12h 00m 42s
12th chime: 12h 00m 44s
USELESS INFORMATION:
Long chimes (chimes where the first difference is 3 seconds): 1, 3, 6, 8, 10 (and possibly 12)
2nd differences: 1 = -1; 2 = +1; 3 = -1; 4 = 0; 5 = +1; 6 = -1; 7 = +1; 8 = -1; 9 = +1; 10 = -1; 11 = unknown
3rd differences: 1 = +2; 2 = -2; 3 = +1; 4 = +1; 5 = -2; 6 = +2; 7 = -2; 8 = +2; 9 = -2; 10 = unknown
LOVED IT!
Потрясающе!!!!! Класс!!!!! Супер!!!!!
Coooooool!!!!!!! I have never seen a digital clock that chimes! Only analog clocks with face and hands that chimes. Where can I get a clock like that?
That is a cool clock
Getting one!

I must have this...
This is amazing. Very impressive. As you do not sell them, would you be willing to share more information as to how the system works please?
Start here with construction pix: eeberfest.net/gallery.php
The clock part is a fairly standard Nixie clock design - microcontroller keeps time and oversees all other functions, high voltage driver chips are used to allow microcontroller outputs (5 volt) to drive the tubes (170 volt).
The microcontroller operates the chimes by energizing solenoids that pull "strings" that raise the chime hammers. The lengths of the chime rods determine what notes they sound. Playing the Westminster tune is then simply a matter of programming the microcontroller to fire the right solenoids at the right times...
The first strike of the hour bell should mark the hour, not the first strike of the bells ringing the Westminster chimes
I know. Fixed it years ago but didn't make a new video.
Look at the clock
Look at the time
Look at them both
It's time to go
i need one of these
Que hermoso!!!!
nerd-weirdo level easily over 9000!!! :D
nice job, i'm looking for some ideas for my nixie clock
I recognize that chime
Awesome :)
That clock is the balls.
No idea where to get one - I've never seen a chiming digital clock either - AFAIK this one is unique. I conceived, designed, built, programmed, etc. this one myself from scratch, i.e. it's not based on something I saw somewhere.
I must say Sootikins you did an absolute outstanding job on this very unique beautiful clock! Would LOVE to have one!!! I also love the very unique clock shown in the movie "Intersection" with Richard Gere. So if you ever get the chance to see that movie, if anything just for the clock, it's a MUST see! :) Thanks for showing us this fascinating rare piece and all the hard work you put into it. Truly appreciate it.
безупречно сделан корпус и механизм. Очень интересно и грамотно выполнена механическая часть музыки. На фоне всего это великолепия, кусок губки для мытья посуды, выглядит просто как инородный предмет и портит общее впечатление.
I like that music
Ok. I want one. TAKE MY MONEY
Count me in too!! :D Love this beautiful very unique clock!

Awesome...
It's 6 years since you made this first one... and it keeps on ticking. Did you eventually consider start making and selling them?... I know it's time consuming and they just can't be made like cookies, but I guess you'd make some really good holiday money...and make some people happy [like me] to own one of your works of art under the strict protocol of cat sass designs ;)
Or... at least a detailed DIY guide in order to have a chance to make one ourselves... though... that would be a tough project.. and even tougher to get all the exclusive parts.
Give it a thought :)
Cheers from Barcelona, Spain.
Thanks for taking the time to look at the construction photos. I never did try to commercialize. The only way I can see to get the price down to something people would actually pay would be to set up a production line, but the clock doesn't really lend its self to mass production. There's also the issue of liability when selling an electrical device that uses high voltage, and more other issues than I can put in a RUclips comment. I also rather like the idea of this being the only one in existence ;-) The "new version" linked is a new version of the video, same clock slightly modified, not a second unit.
I must have one
Nice
Великолепно!
I am gonna miss listening to this because my friend sold my anniversary clock that sounded like this for $5,000.00 !
SHUT UP AND DELETE THE COMMENT BECAUSE I DON'T WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT !

Kyle Choy I am crying for that Imagine its like 1990 And imagine the scene Like sunrise and sunset the world......
Haha bear go brrrrrrrr
Why is there a 2-3 second delay between each bar?
***** I'm not sure I understand the question. This is the version of the Westminster Quarters that is in 6/4 (not 5/4) time. Each 4-note phrase is three quarter notes and a dotted half. 1-2-3-456, 1-2-3-456, etc. My note durations are programmed correctly. I'll admit the overall tempo is a bit slow here, I've since speeded it up a little.
Love!!!!!!!
where do i buy this the chime are amazing
This is the only one in existence, I made it for my own enjoyment and have no plans of selling it.
The Westminster Chime Should Be About 17 Seconds Before The Hour. Then After Westminster Chime, It Should Be 12:00.
April 17 2023
Yep. Fixed it years ago after being told by commenters and then looking it up. First stroke at exactly the hour.
Now all the other chime patterns (the quarters) are also starting earlier so as to finish at :00 seconds.
Did you write the firmware in AVR machine code?
All written in C actually. I use avr-libc and the rest of the WinAVR toolchain. Some do not like WinAVR... I dunno... it's always worked great for me.
nice ... but the chimes should be timed to ring just before the time is reached (especially on the hour as the first strike of the hours count should be exactly on the hour)
True, and I made that change ages ago - this is a very old video!
Nice.
