    Looked a great crop.
    You may be aware of baldys farm, if not have a look at a couple of his videos of about a month ago and what he grew and baled. Although he's a suckler herd not dairy.
    Just a thought to consider along with what you've got.
    You must get chatting as i know you've a lot of knowledge to pass on.
    Keep well.

      Yes I saw that video. In baled form I think it’s more of a beef feed to be honest. If we grow it again we will put it in a clamp I think. We may put it out with a mchale straw chopper for the youngstock

    Great video, would be good to see more of your dairy operation 👍🏻. Will you just feed a few wholecrop bales alongside the grass silage?

    • @sandersfarmvids
      @sandersfarmvids  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ideally we would just put the in between the silage ones but the silage bales are so good I don’t think they’ll eat them. I think we will save them for youngstock and dry cows

    Different feeding system and very different climate. Canada, near Montreal. Dairy herd in a tie stall type barn. We run a steel spike through the centre of the bale and lift them with an electric winch that runs on an overhead track. They unroll like a roll of paper towels. I aim for 30 percent moisture or less. Too wet and I have a block of ice to deal with

      Definitely be a different climate! My dad has always wanted to farm in Canada

    Can you show a photo of what rye silage looks like? At what stage was the grain mown, or was there already grain? Did the press have their knives on? Great videos, best regards.

      Hi. Can’t put photos on RUclips! We mowed it when the grain was at a cheesy stage so it was digestible without crimping it. We did put the knives in but the straw was still quite long. We should have lifted the mower and left the bottom 10 inches of stalk. We put it out with a mchale strawchopper which chops it up a bit more. We have fed it to our young stock and dry cows who love it.

    What is the percentage humidity of your bales? I have trouble with my wrapped bales freezing solid if i do them too wet

    • @sandersfarmvids
      @sandersfarmvids  11 месяцев назад

      Probably 50% DM. Never had bales freeze. I think a bale shear would cut frozen bales

    I thought when doing wholecrop silage the grain would need to be rolled or have some sort of mill as the grain would pass threw the animal and they would not get all the value from the feed if not rolled. I hope im wrong as ive planned to do wholecrop but ive no concrete slab but i do have my own baler and wrapper

      You have to harvest the crop when the grain is like a soft cheese. Too milky it won’t have as much nutrition, too hard it will pass through cow. If it’s gone too hard you may as well combine it

    Nice video! Wouldn't it be better to chop it? 🤔

    • @sandersfarmvids
      @sandersfarmvids  10 месяцев назад

      Yes it would but currently don’t have a clamp and didn’t want to make one for what was a bit of an experiment
