  • Make a killer portfolio and land your dream design job. Enroll in my online industrial design course, Form Fundamentals. bit.ly/335vsqO . Form language and industrial design language are a fundamental building block for good design. This video will help you understand what key points you need to focus on in order to successfully manage your user's perception of a product. We explore the meaning of the term "Form follows emotion" and how it relates to industrial/product design. I talk about how to express certain ideas, themes, and emotions through the use of shape and form. This video also shows the importance of understanding culture, context, and your customer's use case when determining what a design should look like.

I am honestly surprised how high quality and insightful this video is, well done! I became increasingly interested in industrial design in the last few months and am thinking about perhaps studying it, really seems like an interesting field

It's a great field. Very competitive. But a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I've almost quadrupled my subscriber count in the past month, so I think that this channel won't be small for much longer. I want to keep things as conversational and as personal as I can while I'm still able to, though.

Great analysis. Love your consistency always learning something ! It’s the first time I heard form follows function.

Thank you! Glad you liked it. The phrase form follows function was originally coined by an early 20th century architect named Louis Sullivan.

Tangent based & curvature based transitions also play an important role in typography and graphic design

Yup. A lot of these principles can be applied to other design disciplines.

Hey, I've got a question that's been bugging me. You mentioned that Apple C3 thing (I think that's what it's called) and how its design was all playful - kinda like a Ford Ka, you know, that cheaper vibe. Anyway, I've been thinking about this for a bit. It's like we humans change how we see shapes and stuff. Like, compare a F22 Raptor and a modern Lambo. They're all about using looks we're used to seeing to sell us something that screams speed and coolness.
But hey, I grew up in the 90s. My first car was a Golf 2. And I've got a soft spot for those cars with clean, simple lines - think Acura NSX, Audi 80 Coupe, even the old-school Lamborghini Diablo. Those rides really speak to me. It's kinda funny how we're influenced by our past when it comes to what we like now.

    Amazing video! Learnt a lot!
A quick question, what software are you using to draw the concept? And what software (cheap or free) would you suggest for anyone interested in trying their hands at Industrial design and concept making?

    • @Design.Theory

just pen and paper is fine. for building physical prototypes, i recommend basic hand tools and a block of foam. the software I use is Procreate for iPad.

I don't think it's failed. I just think it's odd. Odd doesn't necessarily mean bad. Many odd designs are very good.
