Are 'black-only' theatre performances racist? | LBC

- A playwright has defended performances for black audiences at a West End show saying it gives black people a place ‘to feel safe where they often do not feel safe’.
On the evenings of 17 July and 17 September the theatre will be open to an 'all-Black identifying audience' to allow black audiences to watch the play 'free from the white gaze'.
Playwright Jeremy O’Harris has defended the decision, saying “it is a necessity to radically invite them in with initiatives that say 'you're invited'. Specifically you.”
In this video, Nick Ferrari and Narinder Kaur go back and forth on the usefulness of 'black-only' performances.

This woman is always so annoying.

Not just enraging, makes his audience feel superior. Gives the impression "the other side" are generally as unhinged hypocrites as Narinder was here. People lap it up, toxic arrogance gives a "buzz" which is detectable in the brain, propaganda works by addicting people to the hits of neurotransmitters that come from enforcing the views on the channel.

So sad how far backwards we’ve come since Martin Luther King’s famous speech. I have a dream that my children will be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.
I don't think we ever moved forward from MLK speech😊
Part of the problem is that people like her have very little in the way of real character,
In America, they are being judged by character which is why so many are in prison.
@chrisj9700...Martin Luther Kings speech was just a dream of idealism in the American context. Anyone who knows real American history and dynamics that happend against Afro-Americans would be a realist and know MLK was to lost in his idealism. No intelligent and historic consioncess person wil neglect the years of lynchings, burning alive Afro-American men and cutting of their private parts, pushing anti-Afro-American propaganda for years in the name of fearmongering. MLK was blinded by his Christian faith, idealism and egalitarianism. He did became a realist at the end of his life and realized what type of beast the American system really was and still is.

@@Sylar1968 absolute nonsense, there are no such evenings
@@chelseapoet3664 Maybe not explicitly but that is the reality unfortunately. Theatre spaces tend to be predominantly filled with the white middle class which is the reason for Black Out nights; simply to encourage black people to come to the theatre
@@Sylar1968 They are predominantly filled with white people precisely because other ethnicities don't want to go; and, of course, because the UK is a white northern European country.
You have to wonder why people are so offended.
It's because as a person with a white face I do not look at the stage when I go to the theatre, I face the opposite way and look at the audience, so I can certainly understand why some groups would find that offensive
Fair enough, It is human nature to question why you are being left out of something... but if you just sit and think about it for yourself, its not really a big deal is it, to let a black audience have 2 nights out of a whole run of nights, to watch it amongst themselves? Why have a night like that? Because its a play that deals with the subject of oppression against black people? If there was a night for just Jewish people to watch a piece that portrayed their oppression, would we begrudge them that? Or if it was was a piece about WW2 and there was a night just for families of veterans, would be begrudge them that? When comes to sensitive subjects is it not understandable that some people might like to watch a play about it amongst their own community if given the chance. Perhaps it will make them feel more comfortable, more safe, less judged, a bit freer to be vulnerable?
If you're white, and want to to buy a ticket that night i'm sure that legally they cant stop you at the door, but why would you choose that night knowing they've allocated it to black people for some of those reasons above. Really try and question the part of yourself that cant just go on another night.
There's an easy answer to avoid white gaze!
2 nights white only no black gaze

Seriously though, I'm fine with it as long as other identity groups can do the same. Men only, straight only, women only etc. Can't work if only certain groups are allowed to be "ists"

We need to encourage black people in UK to differentiate American media from UK media. We've either dropped the baton or encouraged this nonsense. In general the generational handover from X to Z has been really poor and compromised by internet and social media misdirection.
If there were enough black spaces to affect the whole of society in any meaningful way: yes.
As there aren’t: no.
Different groups need their own spaces, and you have to balance that with the need for everyone to have some space somewhere. I’d support a mens only gym for example, but only in a town with mixed gyms and probably a women’s gym too.
I'm beyond tired of this. She can very easily no longer have to live with the 'white gaze' by living in a black country. It may improve her mental health.
Well said
What are the alternative suggestions then?
Whites' only pubs, football matches; blacks' only pubs, football matches, etc. Great for racial harmony!
All white rap concerts anyone? They can avoid the Black Gaze.
This is a foolish thing to do. A Huge step backwards. There will be certain groups absolutely loving this ready to exploit and manipulate to cause division.
I recently watched a video where Carl Nicholson systematically and calmly and very politely showed up Narinder Kaur's arguments for what they are. It was basically an adult explaining simple facts to a child. Its not surprising to hear that she learned nothing and is still shouting the same nonsense. No money for her in everyone getting along.
Do these people not see the problems this is causing, all you are doing is harming yourselves and causing more division and hate, this world is getting sadder by the day, why can't we all be one, why do they want to be separate, if we said no blacks allowed at the theatre they'd be a riot from them.
This doesn't exist in the UK. Literally fake news. Which production, which theatre, when?

White gaze...in a theatre with the lights down...everyone staring at the stage.

I'd recommend going to the event, if you want to. It's open to all. I've been to black events where I was the non black person. I've never had any problems. I've also been to theatre's where l've been the only non white person.
Its open to all??? Thought the point here was that it's for blacks only???😊
Segregation sounds absolutely awful. The idea of a child who doesn’t want to live in the real world.
If there was a play about the Blessed Thomas Green and Blessed Walter Pierson, two Carthusian monks from London Charterhouse who were killed under Henry VIII direction, or Abbot Richard Whiting of Glastonbury who was hanged, drawn and quartered, I wouldn't object to a Catholics only performance as a person from a C of E family. I wouldn't call it segregation, it's more like a community experience
For a couple of nights? It seems like the kind of thing theatres should already be doing, diversifying the experience. Of course it will be a different experience in a black only crowd, and if they find value or catharsis in the experience then what's the problem?
Thank you for restoring my faith in the people of this country
Women is completely bonkers
I initially thought this was wrong but having thought it through have changed my mind on the matter. People should not think of it through the lens of race, but instead think of it through the lens of vulnerability and trauma. Imagine if people sold tickets to your meetings with your therapist while you are trying to deal with past trauma. We need safe ways to deal with traumas that clearly still haunt us.
I'm white but i might self identify as black and book a ticket.........seems fair.
I think that woman just put the equality movement back by about thirty years
I have no problem with Black only nights. Probably the reason this woman thinks the theatre is a "white space" is because less people of colour historically attended the theatre in Britain. Anything to break down that resistance to attending the theatre is fine by me.
But surely it is more important for white people to see something about slavery and to learn from it.
Obviously, yes. Next.
So diversity doesn't apply when it suits them? 😂

It isn't necessarily a bad idea. White people are not banned but minorities and working class people (not a traditional theater audience) are encouraged on certain nights. By all means have black only theatre. Just don’t then give in to pressure to put two black actors into a play about the Brontë sisters. Yes they played two of the sisters. Where?
