So you are telling us that a $400 device released in 2021, is less powerful than devices that cost 2x and where released just a few months ago? No way 😮? Also, you do know that the SteamDeck can play modern indie games and 2D sprite based games that are less resource intensive? It can also play thousands of games from previous 3D generations that can potentially run at higher fps! Shocking, i know.
Why would you want to though? This thing doesn't reach 120 FPS unless you're playing retro games, and it doesn't need 120 hz at that point. This is entirely pointless.
Higher refresh rate can hide tearing better, can lower input lag, can allow you to insert black frames at 60fps, can help to show dropped frames on an early refresh cycle, can...
I think it could hit consistent 120 on indies so not virtually pointless. SD OLED @120hz could also possibly now use BFI on emulators so there's also that.
Not true. Lots and lots of games can hit 120hz on steamdeck. I'm currently playing south park the fractured but whole and it does 120hz fine. Lots of my favorite indy, 2D, and older 3D games can hit this just fine.
@@PR0XIDIAN Yup. It seems like everyone who comments about this mod being pointless thinks that the only videogames in the world are current 9th gen 3D games.
My alienware monitor has been overclocked for 3 years strait (100hz to 120hz) and it was $1500 new. Display overclocking has been around for ages. I just overclocked my limited edition to 120hz and its fine. (I also undervolted it and installed cryoutilities). Runs like a dream. I'm 99% sure based on the model number of the display and the display timings on the BOE panel that it was originally a 120hz panel that valve is running at 90hz due to the fact that the samsung panel can't hit 120hz, and also due to the fact that the color accuracy drops a bit due to display bandwidth at 120hz (noticable).
@@PR0XIDIAN i suspect you're right when it comes to the panel. it just makes more sense to have conformity across the board than to split the devices even more
Overclocking the screen is not even remotely the same as overclocking processors, nothing will blow up. In face the screen may have been 120hz all along, they just kept it down the the same 90hz as the Samsung panel.
