I do hope valve makes a steam controller 2. I don't often use my deck docked because I make heavy use of touch menus and back buttons for keybinds I couldn't fit onto the face buttons, triggers, or bumpers that I want to be able to use while having the ability to use the left stick. I also use the back buttons for stuff like action sets/layers or in the specific case of the L4 button, a gyro off button to re-orient myself. The only controller I've seen with almost all the featureset of the deck is the legion go controllers, but they seem to only work with the legion go's hardware at the moment (plus I've been wanting a joy-con-like controller since I think they give more freedom of movement for gyro aiming since only one wrist is in play instead of two).
There is light for Steam Machines 2.0 and with that Steam Controller 2, but it shoud be touchpads focused just like first one. Deck touchpads are compromised in comparison

Having to dedicate a button to toggle gyro on and off or having it just always be on is something that would ruin the experience for me. Valve just needs to release a Steam Controller 2 with every single button, sensor, trackpad, and stick that the Deck has. Until then, playing games docked will always be a handicap compared to what you can do with a Deck in your hands.

I remap the back and side buttons on the controller to keyboards buttons and then use steam input for other things. For me this has been amazing to use and haven't switched back to regular mouse and keyboard.
That's awesome! To my knowledge, the issue with the battery in the Edge is that there isn't any room for a larger one with all the extra internals. Couple that with the higher price point and I haven't been able to justify testing it😅

I wish they'd rerelease the steam controller. Its what I daily drive. The gyro aiming, haptics, and triggers were ground breaking when it first came out. Would love a refreshed version with steam deck "lessons learned".
The Steam Controller was my daily driver for years until my first one bricked, and now I don't want to use something that's out of production. Hopefully the 2 comes out soon 🙂
Can you tell me how to fix the surface feel difference after I use a handheld system or controller for a while? It seems like it starts to feel greasy after a while but online tutorials don't fix the feel of it to how it was from the factory.
Dude thanks for posting! Preem content as always. Might have to give the duel sense a try, still using a steam controller on the linux game box but have a USB extension cable so I can use my steam deck controller while docked and leaning back in my chair with a full size monitor and wired network. Damn dude, this looks like great engagement stats, about a quarter of people who liked the video commented too.
The struggle is real! 😂 too many options and none of them are quite right, as you say though the trackpad is so useful for desktop and also playing some unsupported or playable games when docked- for me it’s basically essential. DualShock 4 does an ok job for now… as others have said, hoping for an official 2.0 controller from Valve soon!
Yep! I've been considering getting a replacement battery for my dualsense for about a year now because I hate using it purely due to the atrocious battery life, but it's pretty great otherwise.
I feel like now what would make it perfect is attaching a chat pad on the bottom of the controller. If there is one that is that is usable without a dongle that would be perfect
Glad to hear! It was a great little project that really stepped the experience up. Being able to use the same controller for all games AND desktop is a huge benefit 😁 Thanks for watching another one, you're awesome!
@@cryobyte33 Of course, of course! Despite loving back buttons, I think that part would be one I'd skip, but the rest seem really practical and budget-friendly. Thank you for watching, and for the compliment! I might be able to, but it'll have a large amount of time investment since I haven't played it just yet. Not ruling it out, but it'll be a bit if I get to it!
I don't understand how that battery replacement has more capacity when the physical size is the same as the orignal. It looks like it anyway as theres no mention of it being bigger or smaller.
I use the RISE4 Remap Kit as I have a disability where I have limited strength/movement in my right hand, I can support the controller - but using R1, R2, R3 was always problematic. With the rebinds across the 4 triggers, I can now 'use' the R buttons/triggers and with DS4Win I have the mouse input too on the desktop. Cannot recommend this kit enough.
Anyone else have these two weird things happen when using a DS5? 1. The controller connects as a Playstation 5 controller but sometimes it connects as a Dualsense. When it connects as the latter, tons of options (like changing the light bar intensity & colour) are removed from the settings. 2. When in desktop mode, the trackpad works as it should... until Steam comes on. Then the trackpad only works when holding down the PS button, which when held for a short time has the unfortunate effect of turning off the joypad. Anyone got a solution to these problems?
Thanks for watching! Let me try answering: 1. I believe this is when connected with USB vs Bluetooth. Dualsense doesn't allow full control over normal Bluetooth (TMK) so some options are only exposed when connected via USB. 2. I needed to enable PS5 Controller support in Game Mode and then my trackpad worked.
@@cryobyte33 Thanks for replying! 1. Hmm, maybe that could be a cause for why it happened in some instances but I don't use usb at all so I don't know why it switches between them every so often when I reconnect. 2. Oooh okay, I'll have to check that. Cheers for the tip!
I'm shocked Valve haven’t made Steam Controller 2 yet. Just make the Steam Deck layout buta controller, thats literally all they need to do, and they would sell like crazy.
I don't have the circuitry knowledge to do something like this, but I bet it'd be possible to build some sort of Arduino add-on board that one could plug most of the Steam Deck controller components into and use to essentially homebrew a Steam Controller 2.
I also applied that paddles on my dualsense. At the beginning I enjoyed it but eventually I started hating them because ergonomics got worse and that paddles were way too easy to press. I was always disabling them. I think the dualsense edge would be the better choice + bigger battery. The paddles are better located and there is steam input support so you can assign them separately to the rest of the controller.
@@cryobyte33 thanks for the great work 👍 interesting... I've never held a dualsense edge. I thought it would be the same as a normal dualsense + paddles. What you said about the xbox elite series 2 controller is what I'm experiencing right now... I keep getting too many missed inputs when playing while docked on the TV. Never had missed imputs with the Dualsense. Is the Bluetooth on the Elite Series an inferior Bluetooth technology than the dualsense or just a worse implementation?
Iv tried deck docked , it looks horrible and never native res to my monitor making it look like poop on a 1440p display . I put it to native but it still uses 720p in game settings any tips?
It sounds like you need to go into settings, then display, then turn off "automatic resolution" and set it to your display, then the "Native" function should work per-game and you can set resolutions in-game 🙂 Please let me know if this works!
@@cryobyte33 I did that already . In game it defaults to steam deck aspect ratio etc and I can’t change it to native in game only works for the ui of steam os
Another great video! Appreciate the transparency. Extremerate makes pretty good quality stuff. I've modded all my ps4 controllers, modded my joycons to all hell, & modded my ps5 controller right out of the box before I even turned the console on lol Also their steam deck stuff is pretty decent, too. The back shells are good - I have an old extremerate back, the one without the venting for the fan, so I just traced it out & dremeled out vents for it, along with dremeling out the case as well, so it gets super fresh air. Would def recommend the vented model, & a case mod (if you use one). I would also *highly, highly* recommend you do your homework if you want to do any faceplate mods from them, be it nintendo switch or steam deck, as the screw holes can be an issue with placement or threading, and just the process of getting the screen un-glued & out is a much, much, much more intensive surgery than every other mod to the device combined. It can be a serious pain in the asssss. I will definitely pick up those batteries for my dual sense 5s! Once my soldering isnt total crap, I'll try my luck at the back plate trigger mod for it too lol 👍🏻
the only thing missing on the dualsense for me is capacitive sticks for gyro enabling, would honestly be the perfect controller for me, don't even need paddles really as i can claw grip
@@cryobyte33 i cant stand it on a handheld as you're moving the display along with the camera but with a controller on a tv it feels quite nice, it's the main thing making me hope for a steam controller 2
I hope extremeraterate does some hall effect sticks someday for these controllers. It's a bit tricky though since they'd need some addon boards to control voltages and stuff.
I’m getting input latency issues with dualsense and dualshock controllers on the docked deck, I don’t get them at all with xbox series controller. It’s annoying because I’d much prefer using dualsense with the deck but find it makes some games unplayable really. Any idea how I might reduce latency?
I'd rather stick to my dualsense edge. While the battery life isn't great, the original dualsense hurts my hands a lot. The handles are quite pointy, while they are rounded on the Edge. I also like having the function buttons, paddles, replaceable stick modules, and trigger stops. The extra buttons can be remapped in steam to be unique actions, rather than copying existing gamepad inputs
Hey man, any reason you used another battery in the video than the one you mentioned and linked? PAXO seems different from teh BATMAX one. Also one is 2650mAh and the other us 4000mAh. Thanks
I mention it in the video a few times, but I had the PAXO battery in Sweden, but I couldn't find it on US Amazon. I got the Batmax one since it had a larger capacity and was in the US. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I mentioned the disparity in 2 separate segments 😅 Thanks for watching!
after performing the battery mod, have you had any issues charging it to full capacity? I normally use the official ps5 dock however its been charging for 3 days now and still isnt reaching full capcity. was curious if you have had any issues with this
That remap kit is expensive considering you could get a simple remap kit for a PS4 controller for about $13 or less. Granted, it is a PS4 controller but there must be something similar for PS5 controllers I would think? Because I never like pushing my sticks in, I have my R3 and L3 mapped to those back buttons.
I had horrible luck with the cheap remap kits on PS4, they usually had pretty bad quality and failed quickly. I wanted to recommend something here that's been solid for me, and extremerate for the bill 🙂 Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any larger batteries for it. The internals in the edge are much larger so there isn't nearly enough room to install a much larger battery 😞
This is awesome, thanks! I didn't even think of using the dual senses touchpad as mouse input! How is the experience using the touchpad as mouse input?
Thanks for watching! It's not nearly as good as the Deck trackpads, but it's enough to navigate when necessary or to play some games. I personally played Cookie Clicker and Supreme Commander with it and while it can be a little finicky it was perfectly serviceable 🙂
If there is a Steam Controller 2, I really do hope they include two trackpads where the dual sense trackpad is. Do you prefer PS or XBOX analog layout? @@cryobyte33

My favorite controller is the Wii U gamepad (no I'm not joking) and it would have a lot of potential if it could work on linux but I'm not sure it can without heavy tinkering
I've been thinking for a little while, Steam should merge all their past products to a streaming-only Steam Deck. Let's call this Steam Link Controller (Steam Link + Steam Controller 😅) Basically use the Steam Deck shell & controller circuitry, put a Full HD screen, and a cheap ARM processor (Rockchip). Sell it for 175-200, which is the same price point as XBOX Elite Controller. Make it so when it turns on, it can be switched to controller mode or streaming mode.
Very cool, however it turns out it’s not for me: I usually play wired so battery isn’t a concern, I absolutely hate rubberized stuff as the only thing they’ll do is rot and become horrible to touch, and the paddles (the exciting part for me!) aren’t like the Steam Deck extra buttons :( oh well. Cool video nonetheless!

I personally use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel break it up and then dry it thoroughly with a microfiber 🙂
personally wouldn't do a shell swap unless your shell is already broken since the quality tends to be worse. they can look very cool though.
I'm so happy I grabbed two Steam controllers back in the day.
I did both the battery and paddle mods myself a couple of months back (though I had the parts for quite a while before that) and it’s a great combo
are you going to make a new video on overclocking the steam deck ?
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION THE DECK IS THE BEST CONTROLLER EVER AND I REFUSE AND CANT GO BACK TO ANYTHING ELSE
It's definitely the best, but it's a little hard to sue while docked for game streaming or use as a PC 😉
Thanks for watching!
This seems like something I might be down to try! ^_^
Glad to hear! It was a great little project that really stepped the experience up. Being able to use the same controller for all games AND desktop is a huge benefit 😁
Thanks for watching another one, you're awesome!
@@cryobyte33 Of course, of course! Despite loving back buttons, I think that part would be one I'd skip, but the rest seem really practical and budget-friendly. I hadn't considered just upgrading the battery on the PS5 controller myself, which is funny, cause I DID do it to my Wii U, :P.
But yeah, I might actually try my hand at some of this! Thanks for making more awesome content! ^_^
Will you be doing a video on the new monoblock cooling solution for the steam deck from Poseidons 3 rings?
This looks really neat, great video, would it be possible for you to do one of your “deck dives” on The Last Of Us Part 1 on deck btw? One game that’s really hard to find optimal settings for 😅
Thank you for watching, and for the compliment! I might be able to, but it'll have a large amount of time investment since I haven't played it just yet.
Not ruling it out, but it'll be a bit if I get to it!
@@cryobyte33I appreciate you considering it regardless
I don't understand how that battery replacement has more capacity when the physical size is the same as the orignal. It looks like it anyway as theres no mention of it being bigger or smaller.
Off topic here.. but what do you have in your glass enclosures?
I use the RISE4 Remap Kit as I have a disability where I have limited strength/movement in my right hand, I can support the controller - but using R1, R2, R3 was always problematic. With the rebinds across the 4 triggers, I can now 'use' the R buttons/triggers and with DS4Win I have the mouse input too on the desktop. Cannot recommend this kit enough.
Can you do a performance test on Valheim and Enshrouded?
Anyone else have these two weird things happen when using a DS5?
1. The controller connects as a Playstation 5 controller but sometimes it connects as a Dualsense. When it connects as the latter, tons of options (like changing the light bar intensity & colour) are removed from the settings.
2. When in desktop mode, the trackpad works as it should... until Steam comes on. Then the trackpad only works when holding down the PS button, which when held for a short time has the unfortunate effect of turning off the joypad.
Anyone got a solution to these problems?
Thanks for watching! Let me try answering:
Very cool geeky stuff! 🔥
I've held the edge and it wasn't quite as comfortable, plus there's no internal space for a battery upgrade so I settled on this. Thanks for watching!
It sounds like you need to go into settings, then display, then turn off "automatic resolution" and set it to your display, then the "Native" function should work per-game and you can set resolutions in-game 🙂
Please let me know if this works!
@@cryobyte33 I did that already . In game it defaults to steam deck aspect ratio etc and I can’t change it to native in game only works for the ui of steam os
Won’t even let me go to 800p in game stuck at 1280x720 max on a 27 inch 2k monitor it makes it not very good to use for simple games
Another great video!
Appreciate the transparency. Extremerate makes pretty good quality stuff. I've modded all my ps4 controllers, modded my joycons to all hell, & modded my ps5 controller right out of the box before I even turned the console on lol
Also their steam deck stuff is pretty decent, too.
I can't stand gyro so that's not an issue for me, but I hope it's on the next Steam Controller for players that enjoy it 🙂
Thanks for watching!
@@cryobyte33 i cant stand it on a handheld as you're moving the display along with the camera but with a controller on a tv it feels quite nice, it's the main thing making me hope for a steam controller 2
would you have interest in making a video about custom css loader themes for the steam deck? :)
i found no video video about that topic.
I have gyro mouse control as a chord with the ps button, i use it constantly.
Bro any way to overclock the steam deck using the new boss and steam os ?
Sounds like a good idea!
Bro. Cant wait for your next videos. Can you make one for bg3 optimum performance settings
Hey Cryo, do you happen to remember where you got the battery in Sweden? (I live here lol)
Hi crybyte33, i have follosed you guide on overclock and im on OS 3.4.11 and cpu overclock seems to not be applied? Any fix
Weird, my steam deck actually came with buttons on it. 😉
Please note this is just a joke, as said in the video, this is clearly for docked use.
🤣 had me double-take there, thanks for watching and for the comment!
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I mentioned the disparity in 2 separate segments 😅
Thanks for watching!
after performing the battery mod, have you had any issues charging it to full capacity? I normally use the official ps5 dock however its been charging for 3 days now and still isnt reaching full capcity. was curious if you have had any issues with this
That remap kit is expensive considering you could get a simple remap kit for a PS4 controller for about $13 or less. Granted, it is a PS4 controller but there must be something similar for PS5 controllers I would think?
Because I never like pushing my sticks in, I have my R3 and L3 mapped to those back buttons.
I had horrible luck with the cheap remap kits on PS4, they usually had pretty bad quality and failed quickly. I wanted to recommend something here that's been solid for me, and extremerate for the bill 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Hi! I would like to know if cryoutilities can still enhance performance for the steam deck oled, thanks in advance!
It does, I plan on coming out with a video on it soon! 🙂
8bitdo pro 2 is not good alternative ?
Did a cat or dog get to the Switch Pro Controller and gnaw on it? Had the same thing happen to one of mine lol
Neither actually, it's just been beaten pretty badly through 2 intercontinental moves and a whole lot of usage 😂
Great video!
Thank you for watching!
is it possible to just add a bigger battery to the dualsense edge controller? Cuz that’s a lot of tedious work.
Is it possible to use the trackpad on the PS5/PS4 controller as a trackpad on Desktop mode?
Yup! I just had to enable "PS5 Controller" support in game mode and it started working right away 🙂
Thanks for watching!
have you hear of the steam controller ? witch both are perfect for the steam deck
Someone really needs to get the steam deck controller, Then make a wireless controller out of it. It honestly fits so good with my hands, The back buttons are really useful for fighting games, And it’s good over all. (Sorry if the start was kinda weirdly worded, lol)
I love your vids bro! What layout do you use for the duelsense on stream?
My favorite controller is the Wii U gamepad (no I'm not joking) and it would have a lot of potential if it could work on linux but I'm not sure it can without heavy tinkering
We just need a steam controller that mimics the neptune controller from the deck.!
I've been thinking for a little while, Steam should merge all their past products to a streaming-only Steam Deck. Let's call this Steam Link Controller (Steam Link + Steam Controller 😅)
Basically use the Steam Deck shell & controller circuitry, put a Full HD screen, and a cheap ARM processor (Rockchip).
Girls are jealous of his magnificient hair.
Well, I'll probably never own a soldering iron in my life, but sure have an upvote for your effort. 😄

The Dualsense.
Yes, but with a few changes 😅
@@cryobyte33Yes I also did the mod, Rise 4, clicky face buttons, Kontrolfreak hi-rise stick, Gyro, trackpads, mixed with Steam Input, now I refuse to play a shooting game with out Gyro Aiming, it's just revolutionized how you aim and a perfect marriage between Mouse and Controller.
I just want a controller that will wake the deck from sleep. As far as I know only the steam controller will do this. Why!
