Got mine yesterday and played it for hours. It’s an awesome guitar! I think I got a unicorn, though. Mine has vintage deluxe tuners instead of the Grovers listed in the specs. I think whoever installed them must have thought they were doing a Studio and not a Studio Session. It plays great and the 57 Classics sound incredible. Mine has a killer top. I absolutely love it! It’s a keeper for sure.
I’ve had mine a few days now and I love it! It’s gorgeous to look at, comfortable to play (mine is 7lb 11oz), and sounds incredible. It did need the intonation set and I changed the strings because the stock ones had an annoying ring on the D string. Thanks for the volume tip when using the phase control. I never found it useful before but now I do. Gibson did a great job with both this one and the regular Studio. If these new Studios don’t please the Gibson haters, then nothing will. And in today’s economy they seem to be fairly priced for a quality American made product. 🇺🇸🎸
That's very nice. I've got a left handed 2018 les paul studio with a vintage yellow sunburst and black color with the 57 classic and classic plus pickups. I love to play most of the classic rock stuff with it.

Great review and playing. FYI, besides the Axess and Neil Schon model, which is smooth and gradual, the cutout idea was also used on the recent Les Paul Moderns and Les Paul Supremes. Granted, they are much more expensive, but a nice idea. They are great guitars but I think the smooth cutout on the Axess and Schon models is better for upper fret reach, but a hell of a lot more expensive.
Already have a standard and a special. Thought about selling the special and picking up one of these but I can’t. Love the my standard 60’s in ocean blue and my tv yellow special. I’ll save up and pick up one of these probably.
Nice review mate, love the colour too. However, the Les Paul Studios I knew had a hardcase included and not some stupid doughnut bag. Here in Oz those session studios run retail price $4499 dollars and street price at around $3699 dollars which is a big chunk of change for a studio because you could go and buy a really nice mint condition standard les paul with hard case. The numbers just don't add up with those new studios, however the only thing I like is the bound fretboard, weight relief chambering and the 57 classic pickups which are my favourites 😊
Dude! That bourbon burst is calling my name! I might just have to break down and buy a Gibson Les Paul Studio Session. And this is coming from a PRS fanboy!
Just got the Bourbon Burst the other day and it's amazing, especially when you are in a bright light or sunlight situation. But besides it's looks.. .well Steve just illustrated how amazing and versatile this guitar sounds.
I’ve tried 3 of the new studios and everyone from the 2 guitar centers and sweetwater store front have been consistent and ready to go. For feel, sound, and price I’d buy this over the standard any day at a new item stand point .
This is pretty cool, but I would love to see Gibson do a "50's studio" with a 59 style neck and with the pickups in the correct position like on the standards.
Duuuude shut up! This is EXACTLY how I wire up my guitars! This has been an ongoing issue for me about Gibson not hitting the working musiican market! I'll spare my rant because you & I have these talks about what we like in our guitars! I'm sp blown away! Gibson could just throw that pick guard off to the side because that top looks killer! Normally I don't care as much about the top as I do about the sound but this definitely looks sweet! I am truly impressed! I picked up a Tribute to mod it this same way, but it would be nice to pick up one of these and go right out of the box to killer tones!
I bought a wildwood les paul 60's custom shop top and really like it, but i may be selling it for this guy. The blue is fricking amazing, it has the neck heel and is even lighter than my 8.7lb standard from WildWood. I put a pair of slash 2.0 pups, 50's style control knobs and vintage locking tuners. The classics are alnico 2's as well and about the same output. Any thoughts on playability vs the standards? I bought the standard because of the history of the bursts etc :)
They should have added locking tuners and a graphite nut, and it would have been perfect. Oh... and ANY finish besides a sunburst/translucent finish. Those tops scream Dad guitar, while this one has the better entry level price point which attracts younger players.
@ locking tuners are essential for me, makes string changes super fast. Very appreciated at a gig. As for solid colors, hell ya. I am so incredibly tired of bursts. It reminds me of a furniture finish trend from the early 50’s. And I say that with my #1 for two decades being a CS Strat in three tone burst. More so, I don’t like most figures tops either, nor fancy inlays. It screams Mr. T’s jewelry to me.
@mhb450 i used to think the same about locking. In a pinch they are a savior. But I've paid a lot of attention to the break angle after the nut and most locking tuners don't allow the right downward pressure on the nut. So i wound up wrapping them anyway, thus canceling out the lock 😅🤣
@@SteveSterlacci when you read all the steps you take to make sure the strings don’t slip….i think of me changing strings in a dim light side stage…. A locking tuners is thorough the bridge, into the locking tuner gloryhole and locked. No wrapping! 😂. Faster and effective.
I like it better without the pickguard...but I don't like the holes on the top and side. I wish Gibson would supply the pickguard and hardware in a bag in the case and let the buyer decide if they want the thing on there. That way you can avoid the holes.
@@SteveSterlacci while you make a good point, $2k just seems far off for a "working musician." “Working man’s guitar” for the price of a standard just 6 years ago. Don’t get me wrong. I love Gibson and have a few. But a working man’s guitar is a player ii Strat HSS.
Strandberg boden essential is a working man’s guitar. Versatile, lightweight and good looking, and the price is right too. You won’t break a headstock if you don’t have one 😅 not a commercial just my own experience
I think they purposely introduced the $1,600 Studio a couple of months ago first so that a bunch of people would buy one and then when they came out with this one, those same people would buy one of these, too! Had they introduced this one first, I don’t think people would buy both, but just one. 😂 I wish I’d waited as I would definitely prefer to have the ebony fretboard and the modern neck carve. Not sure which pickups I prefer but I think both sound great.
You cant have frets go over the fret nibs. Thats why the nibs are there in the first place. This binding is just like any LP standard, including nibs. I hate the nibs and would opt to refret to get rid of them if it wasnt so expensive to do so lol id rather the fret go to the end of the board
@ that’s what I meant . I was just using my lp classic in rehearsal studio and maybe it’s because I was playing standing up but string was getting caught right around the 3rd fret. Looks cool but just not very practical for a modern day guitar. I’m a die hard Gibson fan boy. Thanks for this video was very cool 🙏💪😎🎸
I’m sorry, upgraded as compared to the “classic studio”? My 2017 studio came with a Gibson hard shell case, all the same options on the knobs. All of them. I actually can’t think of anything new with this other than ebony and…flame top? Which has nothing to do with practicality.
They should just remove the pick guard for this model to distinguish it as the top of the studio line. I always find the pick guard unnecessary for a beautiful guitar like les paul. Tks for the video!
According to Gibson all guitars from factory are Plek processed. So why Sweetwater offers a Plek service for a Gibson Les Paul? They charge $300.00 +tax ... for something not needed?
That is the same half-assed neck heel they have on the Modern for years, that design is actually not that recent, i remember they had a basic Made in the US model with a swamp ash body that they blew out for about 550€ 6-8 years ago. The Axcess guitar neck heel is different and was also used on the HP models 2016-2019 including faded and studio models, i have the faded version that i got for 600€ new. I don't buy Les Paul type guitars without a sculptured heel, there are quite a few guitars like that nowadays from ESP/LTD, PRS, Sire, Harley Benton, Cort, Dean, Schecter, Jackson.
@@SteveSterlacci Yes, the full ass one is great, if you search youtube for "Gibson Axcess VS. Modern Heel Joint" there's a great video with the differences.
I don’t get it… people love this and hated the previous studio modern. the only difference between this and the studio modern released last year is satin vs. high gloss finish and 490s vs 57s 🤔 the Gibson gatekeepers perplex me.
Way to much $....Put push pulls in the Tribute and binding on the neck and bring them back. If your going to spend double the cash why not just get the trad pro?.
I gave it a thumbs down because he only demonstrated one aspect of the guitar. Where was the clean sound at? All he did is demo the dirty side. Yes he showed the function of the guitar. I just think he could have done better. I definitely want to buy the guitar especially that color. Good job Gibson listening to people on what they want. Great guitar.
I love how people say things like “ It’s better than a Standard except for . . . And . . . . And this . . . .and if it had this ….. and maybe that . “ LMAO 😜 Is that kool-aid that you are drinking hot or cold ? Heritage Artisan Aged H-150 same price waaaaaay better guitar/case .
There was no "except for". It has everything a standard has, minus body binding, but does have the contour heel that a standard doesnt have. These are facts, not kool aid my friend. And an H150 artisan aged is twice the price. I have a custom core
@SteveSterlacci the standard will increase in value this will lose value. The standard will always be better than the studio and you mine as well save up the extra 600 and buy a standard instead of this. If you want a studio get the base 1600 model or the modern lite at 1500
Don’t use that Gig bag , definitely get a real case. Your asking for a snapped headstock. Even a real case isn’t good enough. Don’t even look at the guitar to long. Lol. Seriously it happened to me. 🥲

Yes its the WORKING MANS GUITAR, when you work so much throughout the years like a slave you will be able to affor one, hence the name.
Great tones clean luv it !!! Excellent playing my man 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks so much!
Locking tuners ??
No. Ive honestly become less of a fan after owning a bunch! So I'm good with it not having them
Awesome Guitar
If Gibson can send you one, then they can send me one too.
“Working man’s guitar” for the price of a standard just 6 years ago.
This is a more affordable version of Les Paul Modern, not a LP Standard because the electronics are PCB not hand wired.
in EU its like 2.270euros brand new. id go with a standard faded in that price xD
I caved and ordered a Studio Session in bourbon burst to go with my blueberry burst Studio. 😊
These sessions cost over 2k euros in europe much more than the studios
I wish they would have left the binding of or at least have the frets go over the nibs. Then it would be perfect but I’m nit picking it’s beautiful.
I wish they made it in the smoke house color.
I got a studio in that color practically new, im selling it for 1250 euros.
How much does it weigh?
If its ultra modern weight relieved not a lot
They need to make a version with a thicker C shaped neck, the slim taper is a no go for me. Otherwise I’d be interested.
According to Gibson all guitars from factory are Plek processed. So why Sweetwater offers a Plek service for a Gibson Les Paul? They charge $300.00 +tax ... for something not needed?
Write sweetwater and ask?
Is the full ass one different?
@@SteveSterlacci Yes, the full ass one is great, if you search youtube for "Gibson Axcess VS. Modern Heel Joint" there's a great video with the differences.
A Lester ain't properly attired without that guard! 😂
I prefer them inapropriately dressed!
If I hear the phrase, "that classic Peter Green sound" one more time...
Did commenting this do what it needed to for you? I sure hope so
I don’t get it… people love this and hated the previous studio modern. the only difference between this and the studio modern released last year is satin vs. high gloss finish and 490s vs 57s 🤔 the Gibson gatekeepers perplex me.
It would be perfect except for one thing - NO STAINLESS STEEL FRETS.
Looks so good I wanna eat it
Don't burn your tongue!
She's a Beauty....
Thanks Joe!
Way to much $....Put push pulls in the Tribute and binding on the neck and bring them back. If your going to spend double the cash why not just get the trad pro?.
Gorgeous guitar, but nope. Not 2K for a Studio and no hardshell case.
The binding and top i think are worth it from reg studio. The gig bag is preferred for me. Ive always toured with one
The first run through of all the sounds are clean. Literally the first sounds that are played in the video
Oh, definitely no pickguard. I wish Gibson would not install them on all guitars and let the buyer decide.
They used to
Personally, I think the pickguards are ugly, but I also don't want a new guitar with a visible screw hole on the top.
Ive done it on a few guitars. I put the screw back in and dont notice it
Just glue in a small plug of mother o pearl or abalone and it'll look nice! \m/
That price for a crappy studio? 🤣🤣🤣
Its spec'd almost as well as a standard, so yeah. What set neck made in USA guitar do you buy for under 2k?
don't buy this save up another 600 and buy a standard
Have you played one to compare to? Whats your reasoning? Add to the discussion rather than vague statements please
@SteveSterlacci the standard will increase in value this will lose value. The standard will always be better than the studio and you mine as well save up the extra 600 and buy a standard instead of this. If you want a studio get the base 1600 model or the modern lite at 1500
Please add evidence to support your claim

@stevegray5548 you're just making statements with no basis though. I'm just asking for something other than "trust me bro" information
i am not paying for defects that I have to pay to have rectified. frets should be set right, no string buzz
There is no string buzz 🤔 what are you talking about lol
Don’t use that Gig bag , definitely get a real case. Your asking for a snapped headstock. Even a real case isn’t good enough. Don’t even look at the guitar to long. Lol. Seriously it happened to me. 🥲
I use reunion blues gig bags for touring and love them. Over a decade and thousand plus shows incident free
