    I live in the midwest and my uncle is the only farmer left in the family. I wish I could get him to watch these videos as he is stuck in the corn/soybean rut and has been for years. In good years he pays off debts in bad years he rides the edge of bankruptcy. If his wife didn't work off the farm as a nurse he would have lost everything during the farm crisis of the 80's, I don't think everything Polyface does would be a good fit, but I think diversifying would help immensely.

      Check out videos by Gabe Brown. He lives and ranches in N. Dakota so I believe the rainfall is similar. He likes to say “it’s not how much rain you get but but how much you retain in the soil”. His emphasis is soil health, which translates to plant health, which translates to animal health. Hope you enjoy his videos.

    What impressed me is that his father had started this in the 60s. It's a pity that most ranchers are still overgrazing their land. I'd venture to say that the dust storms of the 30s were caused in large part by overgrazing and overfarming land.

    • @shandor2522
      @shandor2522 Год назад

      There’s a great documentary explaining that the Dust Bowl was caused by traditional plowing one season, which was hit by a drought-and the bare ground whixh never had a chance to foster green growth, blew away. Now, no-till techniques should prevent that from recurring.

    It would be even more productive as a savannah with oaks, walnut, hickory, chestnut, and locust to feed to the cattle, provide shade and valuable timber, and to house spiders that significantly reduce fly populations. Just need to build a pallet fence around the trees to protect them when small.

    The sound of homesteading!
    Hey Mike, I noticed my clover leaves have a tiny worm, eating between the leaf layers, making it look like a thin plastic opaque layer. And clues to what to do? I mowed and tossed my clippings (instead of composting), but there are many left that were not tall enough for the mower.
