The Cheapest Netflix Approved Cinema Camera | Lumix BGH1 Review

- Last year dominated by full frame releases like the SONY A7siii, Canon R5, and Lumix S5 but Panasonic did something crazy and released a cube MFT cinema camera full of professional features and ergonomics. Netflix just recently added it to it's approved cameras list so I was curious to see what this camera could do.

@Patrick Tomasso I really appreciate this video and it has convinced me to pick one up. I am have the Sirui 35 and 50 anamorphic Micro 4/3rds lenses. Any chance you have them and could shoot a test? I still intend to get this either way, but I love the anamorphic look. :D Great review, btw.
@@thechromeangel5559 I have a review of the 24mm Anamorphic for MFT. I don’t have this BGH1 anymore though so I can’t test it. I would consider the image pretty much identical to anything you’ve seen from a GH5s with slightly better dynamic range.
@@impatrickt Ok cool! Thanks
Fantastic Channel, one more subscribe!
I’m currently in Canada and would love to meet you and interview you for a brief moment for our listeners. Is it possible?
I've been flying this little guy on a DJI RS2 underslung on a jib and it's amazing! Great 4K 10-bit 4.2.2 footage to a ninja V at the base of the jib thru the HDMI while simultaneously sending a 1080p signal thru the SDI to a client monitor. If we want to stream that same signal we can add a LAN. We can do those 3 at once.
Put a DZOFilm Linglung lens and you got the smallest parfocal/parcentric cinema rig that is netflix approved.
I do wish it had at least a tiny screen as well but for my work I always use the ninja V.
To add to your battery section, I'd suggest looking into the CoreSWX VBR version as it has an additional Dtap output. It powers both the BGH1 with my ninja V for ~4hrs of continuous recording. Only con is that it's 4 inches long and though that's not a lot, on such a tiny camera that thing sticks out A LOT.
Great review!
This is exactly the kind of setup I imagined this camera would flourish in. People are upset because it’s not a pure cinema camera but I was never meant to be. It’s purpose built for situations and scenarios just like this. Amazing!
You've officially sold me. I want a cinema camera, but not a huge rig. This into the ninja, with a cage and handle for handheld (and easy to switch to my gimbal) is perfect for fast cinematic shooting. The Netflix approval is HUGE for affordable cinema. This will be a nice upgrade from the GH4, and I can still fly that as a b-cam. Probably going to go with the EF DZOFilm lenses instead of MFT (so I can use on other cameras too) but yeh, good stuff!
This guy is underrated. First video I’ve seen of theirs and it was a treat to watch and listen. The way he speaks is with such knowledge and authority and just extremely easy to listen to. Subscribed to the channel instantly!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much.
The intro music was spot on
its a banger
@@AndyPhu you have bad taste gtfo
@@AndyPhu he should've did more maybe a tracking shot of a talent or a wide angle to a close or maybe a inside of a vehicle shot the reel was just too static.
What is the song title?
@@thechillinspace7677 dont remember
Crazy how this camera is Netflix Approved! Absolutely wild and also a game-changer for POV or smash cameras on films.
That’s exactly what it’s for! And streaming/broadcast.
BlackMagic needs to get a cube. Like a new one. Maybe S35 sensor like the p6k in a cube with better DR, less noise and less rolling shutter
The BMMCC is still a beast!
@@Skopefilms ik but it does have a decent few limitations
I'm hoping the same but with full frame! I really don't have issues with the rolling shutter on either my BMPCC 4k or 6k.. But I don't really shoot a lot of fast moving objects.
Even when i shot football the rolling shutter Didnt bother me. But pocket 8k is coming for reds balls
It’s the their only FAIL right now. Looks like they failed at cubism again with the 6K Pro.
Biggest difference to the GH5s internally is the 12 bit ADC readout which allows for much better dynamic range (comparable to Pocket 4K now) and the lack of sharpening which is the reason the footage doesn't look like cheap DSLM footage anymore.
Serious?
Looks awesome. Now I'll wait for a video on how to use it. I have a few pro lenses from Olympus and want to learn how to do video and love the small form factor. Looks like quite a big learning curve. Thanks for showing us this camera.
I know nothing about cinema cameras but still watched the whole thing. Really interesting watch, I love how you broke it into segments about different things and closed it with your final thoughts! The footage reel on Vimeo was really dope!
glad you liked it!
Dude what a great review. So many good points, use the camera that motivates you, loved that.
thanks dude! its honestly making reviews harder to make. you gotta go at all the little details because image quality is banging on everything now.
Appreciated the review! I'm planning on getting it later this year. "THE CUBE!"
YES enjoy it!
Thanks for the video Patrick, I love the idea of a cube camera. At work I shoot on the FS7 and FS5 but I am always looking to go smaller. Your Broll made me smile, I worked in Toronto at The Score Sports Network as an editor years ago and your broll brought back memories of the real Toronto for me. Thanks.
Cheers Dave! Those FS cameras are still kicking and crushing it!
As I was watching your video, I happened to be watching Veronica Mars, and of course, I had to rewind your video to make sure I saw what I saw. What a coincidence to see that actor on your video. I really liked your explanation of the camera.
Thanks for reviewing this camera! I feel that it's very underrated and agree with everything you've said. I'm upgrading from a GH5 and felt that this might not be enough of an upgrade so was looking at the s1h but going full frame becomes very costly so this just might make sense for me
right on! id maybe wait to see what Blackmagic is going to announce on Wednesday and then make a decision from there!
Dang! I almost dismissed this thinking it was just a rehoused GH5s and thought I’d rather get a GH5s for the screen but more than enough of a difference to really consider this.
Yeah it’s a sleeper!
Beautiful images, dude! I wish there were a bmpcc4k in a cube form just like the GH1. In fact, I hope the next BM camera will be a Full frame 6K/8K in a cube form too. Cube is the way to go.
Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is a cube one so they already have one and probably new model coming soon. Pocket is different line. This small cubes are designed for action, drones, cars etc like GoPro.
"Micro four thirds is still cool".😎 I would love to try BGH1 with Lumix 10-25 lens. That would be a sick combo.
If only that lens were stabilized!
@@danieldougan269 like you would vlog on it...
Wow!!! So that’s why cube cameras are great!!! I never knew that! OMG those ports!!! Controlling with the laptop seems so useful!!! I didn’t know micro four thirds was still really great either! I always thought it was like for the cheap cameras 😅😅😅 I learned alot today! Thanks Patrick for the awesome video!!! 😁
‘Tis a good looking Netflix box.
I just bought an S5 to upgrade from a G85 and I gotta say, while I LOVE the S5 it made me appreciate the G85 even more. M43 is just so cool and it’s an amazing platform to travel with.
the S5 made me realize the opposite. i should have switched to full frame years ago. i could never stand the 2x crop and weird lenses you have to buy… not to mention the crappy low light etc. now that the new FF lenses are so small and light i dont see much benefit for MFT. and the best MFT lenses out now are huge.
That’s awesome Patrick! Toronto’s looking a little gloomy, but very cool reel! Absolutely love your work! Thanks for showing us around the BGH1
Thanks for watching!
Superb review! I must admit the ergonomics and body-style makes this camera really interesting. One thing to note about the battery situation of the BGH1: These batteries are quite common with Panasonic's lineup of camcorders from their professional broadcast division and very easy to source and ubiquitous in ENG/EFP applications. hope that helps.
you would think on the battery but even panasonic couldn't find me an extra one haha. they had find some third party solution.
@@impatrickt Oh wow. I am using their camcorders for ENG work and these VBR batteries are floating around the office like nothing!
3:18 "I'm gonna Caleb Pike this thing" lol. Great video, never heard of that cam before. I'd like to know what is GH6 going to be like before taking ant decision though
If it’s a photo body is going to be a no for me. Which it will be if it’s a GH.
Really neat cam.. I was wondering about that. I'd hold out for the GH6..whenever that materializes.
Awesome video Patrick! First time I see this camera, wow. actually I read Klaudia's comment on twitter and came here to watch it. The image looks great and it seems to behave really good on low light conditions from your reel. And the best part of it is the price! Thanks man!
Cheers! Yeah it’s a little sleeper camera’
Very good review.
I actually quite highly rate this neat little camera. I've only used it on a couple of occasions, mainly domestic work back here in the U.K. as my main camera (for war/conflict and culture documentary filmmaking) is a RED V-Raptor, which of course, is unreal. But for those without the budget for some of the higher end kit, I think I'd quite recommend the BGH1; for the kind of money they go for, they're quite the steal in my opinion.
Again, great review mate, enjoyed it.
i know that feeling bro, when you pick up a camera. it must be inspiring to do so. even if the image is good, the blackmagic body is such a hassle that you need to rig it especially the battery part to make it usable. that's why i decided to go with the red komodo or the a7siii when i have the budget
Do the Komodo.
Hell yes. I was waiting for this video 🔥
I didnt film enough corners of buildings tho. I failed u.
@@impatrickt Good point. reported and unliked.
Great video.- got me thinking - perfect for a high quality stream setup too. What was the music used on the demo footage at the end.- really really good for the atmosphere.. subbed!
Great review. It's definitely an interesting camera, reminds me of the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera.
Hey! I'm interested in the BGH1. The only downside is it doesn't come with Batteries or a charger. I decided to go with the native Panasonic batteries, however the charger is seemingly way overpriced (it actually should have come included in the package).
Anyways do you have any experience with any other chargers for the Native Panasonic BGH1 batteries? The one Panasonic sells is mostly plastic and costs $219.
You had me at full-size HDMI and multiple outlet options.
RIGHT?
@@impatrickt RIGHT 4 sure
The intro was insanely good, really like the flickers on the sensor... idk if that was intentional that you made it or it just came out like this when you filmed it maybe a table fan reflection or something but yeah awesome.
yeah im actually not sure what caused that! but agree it looked dope.
Great video and channel, thanks! One questions... this camera have a internal ND filter? Thanks again!
I went with a Trio of ZCAM cameras. I have Zero regrets and hands down my favorite investment. I am curious enough to want to try this.
Lovely A-Roll. Equally lovely video
Great video Patrick very exciting times in the industry! Going to have to try one of these bad boys out, which monitor did you use?
I used the Shinobi here but also tried it with the Ninja V. Both are great!
Excelente video, gracias por subirlo !
Thank you for your quality videos!
In your opinion, BGH1 or S5 for Music videos?
S5
Awesome footage, I am going to put this on my list too..
right on!
Thank you very much, what camera would you recommend to make a movie, from the lowest range. the BMPC6K Pro is possible or with the Red Komodo.
The Lumix S5 is a great upgrade from your GH5.
Thanks for this review!
How do you find the HDMI latency compared to the previous gh4/gh5(s) (if you've used them at all). Is it tolerable for motion/action shots? Or is it basically useless for tracking anything fast moving like the previous cameras? I've had my eye on this for quite some time, but IDK if I want to pull the trigger because 12 bit pro res raw would be useless I can't use it for high paced scenes. Thanks!
I never noticed any latency issues with the gh5
On my Gh5s, I can connect to my phone over wifi and change settings / see live view. Would this method be a viable workaround to the bgh1 not having a screen?
if you have a GH5s - I wouldn't get this camera but yes you can use the wifi app too.
Great video Patrick! It’s the longest from I’ve seen from you recently. It will do great. A LOT of creators are looking for an entry point in the Netflix world and this is a cheap ticket 🎫 but with great potential
I absolutely loathe long videos. Don’t get used to it! Lmao.
@@impatrickt hahaha nooooooo! It’s long but juicy so keep them coming!
great video man, thanks, you are inspiring : )
Great video mate! Thanks for this

I LOVE the LUMIX series. I’m looking to do a web series and I’ve seen great footage with this
Looks like a solid alternative to the Z-cam if you're already in the Panasonic world. Nice review!
for sure! also a more reputable brand with better software too.
Z-cam E2 is good if you want amazing slo-mo for same price (4k up to 160fps)
@@thykapow shitty camera
@@impatrickt I don't think so. It's very good for what I use it for with a good community. It could be more refined for sure but its still a very good camera

Hi! Thanks for an interesting review.
I think you can power it over the Ethernet port with PoE also.
Nice review! It’s definitely a camera to think about... I have G9 and this is so interesting!
Could be nice addition!
Dope video, great ending message too 👍
Thanks Mike!
Thank you! I enjoyed this.
Man Lead with that reel. Really sweet colors on it. I am so torn on Zcam, This or using my Z6II and save for Komodo.
anyone can shoot footage lol
The music with the reel was 🤌
cheers! glad you liked it.
The music at the very end reminds me of the video game Earth-Bound
Great review
So happy Gerald made a collab video with you. I wouldn't have known you otherwise!
welcome to the madness
This is a great, informative video - thanks so much. I'm moving more into broadcast and the FS7 is super popular. However for non-broadcast work I've been using the Lumix S5 and really love the UI so think this camera could be a great shout to switch over to for a broadcast acceptable piece - but what would you say about the FS7 and this compared? I don't want to skip on an FS7 and regret it if there's a reason they're so damn popular for docs / TV I've just not realised...
Pretty apples to oranges between the FS7 and BGH1. Since you have an S5 I’d perhaps look at S1H or the Sony FX series. (FX3/FX6)
@@impatrickt Yeah guess I'm just thinking price-wise and broadcast accepted this ticks the boxes but FS7 is so popular in the TV industry. I've played with an FX6 and it's lovely, but at £5k for body alone I was hoping for something more pocket friendly! :)
I’ve been think about moving away from Panasonic but now I’m going to reconsider. Also loved the Toyota Landcruiser. I have two of them on the back burner for restoration.
Amazing!
Amazing production quality and b roll
Appreciate it!
What’re your thoughts of pairing this camera with my pocket 4k?
What editing and colour grade program did you use when filming with the Panasonic BGH1
It doesn’t matter.
I want to buy this camera, I have the gh5 and I like the color of the Lumix, can you tell us if more of this camera in another video, apparently it has a much higher focus and a greater dynamic range.
I gave it back already. It’s not a really a camera I would recommend for standard filmmaking. It’s more for speciality work and studio.
great video and an honest review.
cheers!
Using Caleb Pike as a verb was really funny to hear xD
I really like the name chameleon for it, it's what RED should have called the Komodo.
fire video. what’s the name of the song in the intro ?? i need that trackkkkk haha !!
14:57 I didn't need the personal attack 🤣
lmaoooo
The colors in the end footage are incredible!
Are they true to how the locations looked in person or have you redone the whole thing and made it look cinematic?
I'm really curious because that would be the deciding factor in my opinion.
If you were the one who made it look cinematic, and the camera just recorded the standard image, then I'd most likely just stick with Blackmagic :)
(I mean, I'm 99% sticking with Blackmagic, but I'm just wondering about the colors hahaha)
I think the BGH1 and the P4K are really neck and neck. In terms of an out of the box image I definitely think the BGH1 needs less work and feels more natural. You can totally get them both to look the same though. Choose the form factor you like best!
100% on your closing statement. Subscribed.
Appreciate you watching till the end. A lot of people have taken comments out of context.
great review! Hows the moire and OLPF on this camera?
Same as gh5 and gh5s
Hi! Can I ask a favour - can you test what happens when you plug an iPhone into the BGH1 USB-C port with an Lightning to USB-C cable? I’m wondering if it charges it, or if it helps with latency?
Nothing happens. There’s no power out.
@@impatrickt thanks!!
Great info 👍

You keep saying you don’t like the black magic, but you keep shooting with it. 😎
Once in 6 months? Lmfao
I’m getting this camera, it’s so good and has none of the corner warping found in other Panasonic cameras
Very cool video! Ursa mini 4.6k is also a great budget Netflix approved camera if you can find a used one for a good price! It does take more expensive accessories, so I think when it's all said and done, the BGH1 is overall cheaper.
But Ursa is not MFT

How is the full size HDMI is “safer” and more “secure” compared to mini HDMI? 04:40
If you’ve ever used micro HDMI you will know the answer to this question.
mini HDMI breaks if you look at it, breath on it, touch it, or even thing about it. Mini hdmi never lasts more than a few days, unlike hdmi which is very robust and sturdy.
@@cheeeeezewizzz also mini HDMI isn’t even that bad but it’s rarely used - it’s micro HDMI that’s bad.

Nice camera..something to look at. I get what your saying about the pocket4k but... easily overlook at when you shoot with it.

Helpful review. BGH1 = full size HDMI port, S5 = Micro HDMI port, should partly sway your purchase decision. Sometimes it's the small things, or the big things in the case HDMI connector types.
I prefer micro. smaller stuff coming out the side. ive never had issues with micro.
Funny, I did expect an update of their little cube cam from BMD, but instead they give us the opposite, a fully rigged pocket pro. Which I think I like better.
