The Lower Ninth Ward is a neighborhood within the geographically larger 9th Ward of New Orleans. Located close to the mouth of the Mississippi River, it's known for its historic significance and tight-knit community. It also gained national attention due to the devastation it suffered after Hurricane Katrina.
The Lower Ninth Ward was historically a working-class Black neighborhood. In the wake of Katrina, many residents were displaced and the area has struggled to rebuild. Crime can be an issue, though it's important to note the national trend of crime reduction applies to New Orleans as well. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize the Lower Ninth Ward, with a focus on cultural preservation and community resilience.
