- One of my two favorite cameras ever made, the original Canon F-1 has held up over time unlike almost any other camera. Designed for professionals, and used heavily, Canon F-1 bodies remain reliable, accurate, and highly usable even as they've passed 40 to 50 years old. This video series provides detailed instructions on how to do all the things that a Canon F-1 (Old) can do to take photos and create images.

I just received my F-1 today. Thank you for making these two videos of the F-1. Very informative, helpful and clear. Can't wait to start using it.
Very nice! These are such awesome cameras.
love my canon f1
Very informative video. Just purchased this camera, cant wait to use it.
Nice! These are awesome cameras.
Just ordered my F 1 tonight will be back for the second video. Ty❤
Nice choice!
I believe this camera was designed by the designer from Nikon who Canon managed to get over to their camp. A bit of a cheek too, to call this the F1 when Nikon already had the Nikon F. This was Canon's major attack at getting into the professional market. Nevertheless, the Canon F1 is a great camera along with the accompanying FD lenses
Nice! I did not know that, but it has a lot of the same design hallmarks.
Do you know that designer’s name?
Thanks for sharing. Besides the functionality, I like the black paint which looks similar (imo) to Leica’s.
Thank you and yeah, there's something about this camera's specific shade of black that looks great.
Back in my Nikkormat FTN days, a classmate who had a Canon FT, decided that the Canon F-1 was his "next step up." Along with the updated Canon FD lens series, I was prompted to upgrade to a Nikon F2 when I saved enough coins and bills.
They're highly comparable cameras. The F2 has some weight advantages, too, and they are more reliable than the F-1 Original (equally reliable to the F-1N)
It’s unfortunate that you didn’t go over the speed finder! There’s barely any reviews on this wonderful and useful finder
Good point. Yeah, that's the finder to get with this camera. I wish that camera makers today had swappable prisms so that speed finders could be a thing again.
I believe there is three versions - F-1 (OD), F-1n (2nd style) and F-1N.
Yup. The third was an entirely different camera, though, and had additional features and a different design and system components.
Best photography channel out there and great videos David. You don't know it but you were with me at every step of the way, so thank you teaching me how to develop film and so much more!
Thank you and it means a great deal to me to read your comment! I hope that what I have planned in the coming years is just as helpful if not more so.
What batteries can I use for the canon f-1? I’ve been struggling to find the right answer because everyone says completely different batteries
The second video in this series has a section explaining that.
Video @15:06 "better to waste the film" - Not necessarily.
Page 45 of the instruction manual shows the simple procedure of making multiple exposures (push the rewind button). - So release the shutter to help the mirrobox & shutter springs, then before you store the camera away, push the rewind button. There you go, no frame of film wasted !
Yes, but you still need to advance an extra frame afterward. That was just understood back then. Gearing doesn't immediately start up again except on cameras with a multi-exposure switch (which this one does not have.) When the double-exposure process is finished, the rewind button is released, and the lever is activated to advance the film, the start of the advance re-engages all the gears and it takes a moment for the film to start moving. A dead frame is still needed to ensure there is no frame overlapping on this camera.
@@DavidHancock - Well Mr. Hancock, - #1 Did you even read Page 45 of the instruction manual? - #2 I'm a camera technician & understand the 'customary' mechanics of let's say a Canon FTb that you're speaking of. - #3 Notice that when the rewind button is pushed in, that it IMMEDIATELY pops up when one releases the shutter (this can only happen with the film door closed). - #4 In the Nikon vs. Canon WARS, the flagship System cameras were all in close competition in their features. This of course included MULTIPLE EXPOSURE capabilities. - - - Your apology is accepted😇
I did reread it before replying, yes. I always go into a question or correction reply after going back to the source and re-reading to verify my interpretation. And ultimately, this is a guide video to get people familiar with the controls and with them idea that they'll practice and refine and learn on their own. I have also made double exposures with this camera.
I have been looking to getting this camera on eBay . i want the original but on eBay they put early f1 old f1 late f1 if someone can please explain what they mean when they put that on there listing don't want to end getting the wrong one
Assume that eBay wording is probably faulty. If you're looking for this specific model, examine the images in the listing and compare them to the banners in this video. The Canon F-1 New looks (most noticably) different than this on the back and top.
@@DavidHancock i would just like the original that came out in the 70s nothing else after that
@@rubeng1609 That should be called the old or original F-1. Just keep an eye out for one that does NOT have a battery chamber or grip on the front and that DOES have a battery cap on the bottom and you'll be in good shape. The old also has a battery check dial on the back and a different top plate. The F-1 New was a significant redesign. I also have a video series on that camera if you'd like to see what it looks like so you can stick with this one (which, by the way, is my preferred version of this camera as well.)
im trying to find a good new f-1 and its looking like im gonna spend 4-500 bucks for a good one
At least, yes. There are equally capable cameras that cost less and are more reliable than the New F-1. If you're set on the FD bodies, check the T series cameras, like the T90. If not, check the Nikon F3 (which is far more plentiful) or something like a Minolta X-570 if the removable prism and focusing screen aren't mandatory.
There is one being sold in Dallas on Facebook marketplace and comes with a bunch of extras
