  • Detailed Review and Demonstration. F-1 was Canon's challenge to Nikons early dominance of Professional film cameras.
    The F-1. It was produced from 1971 to 1981.
    There are 3 versions of this camera. F-1, F-1n and New F-1.
    What I demonstrate here represents F-1 and F-1n.
    The Canon F1 was meant as a direct competitor to Nikon F but almost a decade later. It takes a similar path as a true system camera. According to Canon’s own literature, it had 10,000 component parts. They claimed to demonstrate reliability unmatched by any other product in the photographic industry ie nudge-nudge wink-wink, Nikon. That was the brand to beat, even though other Japanese brands like Pentax, Minolta and Olympus were also doing incredibly innovative things but in a different market segment. At the time Canon F-1 was launched, to some extend thanks to Nikon, you could completely forget about competition from Germany, either West or East, let alone. It did not matter anymore.
    It is questionable if Canon F-1 was meant as a competitor to Nikon F2 since the release dates for Nikon F2 and Canon F-1 were so close. There was little time for Canon to try to change the design and compete with the new features of the F2. But in fact it was marketed as such. In many areas, Fanon F-1 did manage to match and surpass the features of both Nikon F and Nikon F-2.
    Canon F-1 is still a favourite of film photographers. It has an exceptional reputation for reliability after more than 50 years.

    I bought my first F1 in 1972, and since then I have bought another 4, for a total of 5 F1s. They are all absolutely fantastic.

    great video! can you tell me if the viewfinder for the original F-1 would fit on the 1976 F-1n (the second model)? because i cant find that information anywhere. i know that the first model and third model viewfinders are not compatible, but i am wondering if the first and second model viewfinders are interchangeable. thank you!

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  2 месяца назад

      My understanding is that viewfinders were not changed between model F-1 and F-1n. In fact Canon did not even name the model differently. F-1n is a made-up name by commentators and reviewers for convenience. That is probably why you cannot find any information. The differences between the two models are very small. The main one being the ISO dial goes up to 3200.
      The model that I demonstrated was F-1n. I listed the differences as far as I know at 1:44. This is just my opinion. I cannot guarantee anythign 100%.

      Hello, the viewfinders are the same, no changes at all between the 1971 and the 1976 model. All finders support the 12 per cesnt selective metgering rthatr is built into the body and not the finder. Only the Servo EE finder uses an integral metering of the whole screen. Another modification in 1976 was a bigger collar around the shutter button for a smoother handling. A major improvement where the news focusing screens made with new and brighter surface. They are marked with an additional letter L (for laser, as I remember). . It was a technique that was used on all screens for the New F-1 and not mentioned very often during the last two years of the production of the original F-1. They are really brighter than the old ones. (the focusing screens for the New F-1 are a totally different thing to discuss, there are 32 different types for spot, partial and integral metering)

    Great review! Love the detail! I do have a question. If I have a lens on or off the body when I rock the camera back and forth I hear a clicking noise. It sounds like something sliding then stopping. The camera works great just not sure if any noise when rocking the camera is normal or not?

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  2 месяца назад

      Nope. It should not make any sound. F1 is rock solid and nothing shoudl be loose. You may have to invest in a camera service.

    This is hands down one of the best videos if not the best one for these cameras :) Anyone know where I can buy the battery and adaptor for the F1-n? I'd appreciate it if you sent a link! Thanks fam!

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  2 месяца назад +1

      If you prefer the battery without using an adaptor, on Amazon search for "PX625A battery" and plenty of options come up. These are the Alkaline versions of PX625. Then set the ISO dial one or two stops lower than the film box indicates (ISO 400 becomes ISO 200) to compensate for the slight voltage difference. Alternatively you can get cheap and common Brass adaptors on Amazon. Search for "Brass adaptor for PX625". These adaptors take the common LR44 or SR44 batteries. Do the same ISO adjustment as mentioned before. If you want to get the best voltage controlled adaptor from Japan, search on Ebay for "MR9 adaptor from Japan". With those, ISO re-adjustment is not necessary as the voltage will be just right. Finally get the ultimate information on this type of battery and all the adaptors from our video on this exact subject: ruclips.net/video/xt6bC9Kt3Dw/видео.html

    Canon F1 is beautiful but the new F1 is a beast. More versatile than the F3, better built but born just before autofocus area.

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  6 месяцев назад +4

      F-1 is historically important as it probably saved Canon from being forever a consumer camera maker. Also it lasted a long time as was promised by Canon upon its launch. New F-1 is a very competent camera, which takes a respectable place in the Canon history, but not as critical as the original F-1. This channel is all about Heritage.

    • @philmtx3fr
      @philmtx3fr 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@TechHeritage I understand your point. Two rems : the canon F1 was not the first professional canon reflex camera. They first develop another system Camera - The Canonflex and R2000- but the success went to the Nikon F. Then personnaly I just consider that the F1 was not as good as the Nikon F2 and the new F1 was better’ than the F3. Anyway the real success of Canon went later and the deal breaker was the canon EF mount which was 10years in advance and made a lot of sport photographers pass from Nikon to canon.

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  6 месяцев назад +1

      As the historians would have it, there is a chain of events leading to where we ended up. Canonflex was not the right path but F1 was. Without F1 Canon could have ended up as second or more likely 3rd tier camera maker for a decades. F1 bought enough time for Canon to re-group, innovate and come back for a counter-attack. So, F1 was the "Inflection" point and therefore historically important. Many more Canon cameras are in-line for review including EOS-1 (the original one) which was mentioned several times in the Nikon series. The very next one, however, is AE-1 in a couple of days.

    It's just an A1 with a removable EVF 🤷🙄

    • @TechHeritage
      @TechHeritage  4 месяца назад +2

      Actually A1 is 7 years after F-1. It is based on the A series chassis like AE-1 and the rest of the A series, designed for robotic factory production. F-1 is fully mechanical but A1 is fully electronic (both shutter and aperture). I would say the differences are a bit more than the viewfinder.

      what point? It doesn’t even compare…
      FTB with a removable prism makes more sense. Still the F1 does a lot more in terms of custom modularity and swapping parts. Also, EVF means “electronic viewfinder” and is digital language
