Yes, that’s exactly how I do it! When your ready to cut it don’t slice it down the middle because that is very difficult. Just slice 1/2 or 3/4 inch at a time from the base upward after a bit turn it upside down and do the same thing. When you have the big part in the middle left, just slice it sideways. You avoid that huge hard to get through middle this way!
I love rutabagas. My mother used to fix them about every two weeks. I’m 71 years old. My mother has been gone since 2008. I haven’t had it since then. When I was about 20 years old my mother asked me to help her with the rutabaga. So I tried to cut a Rutabeggar with a butcher knife not a paring knife it slipped and hit my wrist cut my wrist not deep. But since then I have referred to it as the suicide vegetable am I will not touch it. So I’m really looking I really appreciate your help with this because I miss rutabaga
Thank you for sharing your story! It's very funny that you call rutabaga the "suicide vegetable" because of your injury! :) It does take the dangerous combination of strength while using a sharp knife! I hope you can figure a way to get them peeled and cut up because they are a tasty root vegetable!
@@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict Oh I watched your visit video and learned a great deal. I will no longer be afraid of it now I know how to peel the darn thing. Stay safe God bless 2021 is finally here please mask up
@@pamelabryant7390 Thanks Pamela! I'm so happy that my 85-year-old mother got her first vaccine today in Maine! You stay safe too! All the best in the new year!
To prevent nicking my fingers while holding rutabaga, I used a cutting glove I bought at Bed Bath & Beyond. This type of peeler worked great for peeling it.
There's a guy on RUclips that using a spade bit just Jabs in that sucker and Anna holds the fever and rotates takes no time at all and no work instant success
@@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict I'm making pasties today so that's why I looked up your video. I have never seen so much wax on a vegetable. Thanks for this.
wrap the rutabaga in a wet paper towel..put in microwave for 5 minutes...makes it super easy to peel...
Thanks for the tip on putting the Rutabakka in microwave for five minutes. Easy peel. Had to let it cool a few minutes.👍
Have always microwave mine till the skin just peels off.
I think it's nice how we can all talk about Rutabaga's like this.
Lol!

@@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict oh that is great news! I think I’m going to be waiting well into March for mine. Stay safe mask up and God bless
Great idea for peeling, rutabagas are notoriously hard and very dense vegetables.

Love the video and I’m definitely buying the knife since Rutabagas are so hard to slice. Great video and suggestions.
where did you find the knife? I want one also.
Awesome & It worked! Thank you. Quick & Easy.
Thank you Nancy! ☺️
Than You so much!! Very helpful.
Thanks Nancy. I bought one and had no idea what to do with it.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. Blessings 🙏
I always add rutabaga to my stews.
Love parsnips too!
This is how I peel mine. Very easy.
Never thought of peeling it around the sides!
Detroit says thank you. 👍
Thank you!!!
I absolutely love rutabagas but I would not say they have a delicate taste.
ever try putting it over stove and melt the wax - but your way looks really good
Worth a try!
We call it a swede in England
I never knew why we did though....
Why doesn't my peeler work like that!,! 😩😩 lol
Peeling is not the problem, cutting/slicing is.
Our Rutebegas in NJ are the size of basketballs and weigh 20 lbs.
Lol! Maybe an axe in the backyard to break it up first would do the trick? :)
@@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict Need a chainsaw on those bubbas!

Now get out the chainsaw to cut it up! LOL
I will peel my rutabaga like this next time. Thank you
Lord I hate peeling rutabagas.
I use it in my chicken soup
Minimal injury is a low bar to set. When will you release a video promising no injury?
Lol! :)

I thought rutabaga was turnip? Wtf
Boil it whole 2 mins first.
