When I was 14 (1991) and learning to play guitar, I had a an audio CD of this video that served as the only musical instruction I had for nearly two years. I listened to that CD every night when I went to bed and throughout the day for months on end. Even for guitar, this whole thing was superb and I will be forever grateful to Jaco for the part he played in my musical education.
I remember seeing Jaco walking along Federal with his guitar case in his last couple years. It was sad to see, let alone his fate a year or so later. He was a true genius!
Charles Cote yeah bro, I have never understood the fascination you tube bass players have with slapping. I think it gets old real quick. Jaco was so much more melodic. Like singing on the bass, and that’s much more appealing, at least to my ears.
@@richsackett3423 Actually, he did. Fender started making fretless electric basses almost entirely because of Jaco. Bassists like Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten play in a melodic style with rich harmonics inspired by Jaco. And in an interview with Marcus Miller, Miller recounts how he was showing off his slap technique to Jaco who sad "Yeah, I can play like that. I just don't." I mean, you can say whatever you want about the man, but there is absolutely no denying the influence he had on the world of bass playing, both as a player and as an innovator. It's just the way it is.
@@diego2112gaming "Fender started making fretless electric basses almost entirely because of Jaco." That simply isn't true. Why do you think that's factual? Were you playing bass in the '70s? I was. Bipolar disorder is a hell of a thing. Some days you're good. Other days, you're not so good. The days I'm not so good, the only time I'm even close to holding it together is when I've got an instrument in my hands.
Jaco plays like a damn god, it’s so nice to hear him play. When Jeremy plays, it just sounds out of tune and not nearly as good as Jaco. I don’t mean to be rude, but i can’t imagine anyone replacing Jaco.

I love how after each exercise, he throws in a couple of random harmonics. That's one of his trademarks.

It really makes me sad that we've lost these geniuses at such young age. Jaco, Hendrix, and on and on.

great story...
when I was in high school I actually had this loaded on an iPod and I would walk around listening to it!
My favorite bassist of all time!
Feel, musicality, and tone.
I just felt a quick breeze flow right over the top of my head.
Close your window
That was the spirit of Jaco.
Me too watching this really!
Love harmonics on the bass.
So does Steve Bailey.... I think Steve has played more harmonics on bass than straight notes... 😝😝
instantly recognizable tone, a one of a kind

Two bass giants talking about music using the language of music. Great lesson.
The way that he plays the Harmonics at the end of any riff!!!!!
Cliche!!!!!
Could watch stuff like this all day!
Would pay just to hear him practice, the definition of cool hipster. RIP Jaco.
Jaco changed the world of bass, all without slapping. It's all about music and feel.

At this point in his life Jaco was a homeless drifter with huge addiction issues, and still the best bass player ever.
After the Playboy Jazz festival fiasco everybody wrote him off. He couldn't get a gig
