The Fabia deserved the top spot IMO. A remap will actually see 180bhp reducing the 0-60 time to around 6.5 seconds and a top speed of a 140+mph and still manage 50+mpg so the extra £250 for the remap and the £200 extra you would spend on insurance you would actually get back from saving on your fuel cost.

I love these videos.... I'm well out of the range for these now being 35yrs old but I still enjoy them. My first car was a Renault 5 GT T. I absolutely loved it.
I’d say the older VW golfs/polos 2000-2008 are the best first cars, cheep, reliable, easy to work on, easy to learn about how cars work! I went from a VW polo 2018 to a VW golf GTI 2006 and my current car now is my BMW E92 M-Sport 2012
Joseph Hemming mk5 Astra Sri 1.9 150 and the 120 ive just got a 120 and it’s mapped to 189 with lots of torque, cheaper than my 1.4 307 on the insurance and beats most things I’ve raced st150s, fabia vrs, Leon fr tdi and my mates dads a6😂
Nailed that vid once again... becoming the norm for you my friend!!! you mentioned the vts c2 but i would also say the c2 code is a good proposition as well. Where I live it costs £1600 to insure for a 17 year old and you can say it's a limited edition vts except with a 1.6 instead of a 1.4 (in some cars), heated front tan leather sport seats and special paint with a few other bits and bobs. 8.3 to 60 as well :)
The Fabia VRS has the same engine as my little polo, best first car in my opinion is either the Fabia or a polo with the same engine as it’s cheap to run and easy to tune to get great performance.
I have a tdci ztec s which was my First car, I’d always go for the diesel over the petrol because of how cheap it is to run, and it’s very reliable from what I’ve seen, mines an 05 and I got it for £850
All vw group members r great cuz they cover sm u have seat for pretty much getting a polo (ibiza) or a golf (Leon) for a cheaper price then u have actual vw so u can get urself a polo or if ur budgets bigger a golf and then u have the Audi a1 and a3 for the rich kids my first car is a polo and due to this virus I’ve only had 1 driving lesson and now the rest r off till further notice☹️
I went for a VW 1.2 04 polo with 72k miles for my first car last year. Didn’t last long at all, engine light was near enough permanently on just all round quite bad. Switched it up to a 1.4 1998 Honda Civic ej9 74k miles with the car and insurance costing 2500 together. My insurer for the polo wouldn’t insure me on it so I had to start over as I hadn’t finished the year. So far cant fault the civic at all
I've got a 2002 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 I've been to Munich and back to Luton 4 round trips most times the cars packed even with my tool box and other stuff (I live and work in Germany but have to come back because of my car insurance) and honestly nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Actually been really solid for me even though all I do is just change the oil and filters which is dirt cheap for it also
Love that - so cool that you've done some long trips in it - I loved my Skoda for travelling Europe, 2,500+ miles with ease through snow/over mountains/wherever!
My dad had a Galaxy with the 1.9 TDi engine and we had it for 5 years ish. In that time, as far as I know, the only thing that went wrong wasn't anything to do with the engine. My favourite engine.
I know this is an old video now, but an honourable mention is the Renault Clio GT 1.6 Petrol. Its got 130hp and without a black box can be insured at around £1500.
been an owner of a Citroen C4 1.4 (90 bhp) for a while now and have to say its a pretty enjoyable car including modifying it and so on I have a few videos about it on my channel but I will soon upload a new one with everything I've done to it and for a 1.4 it actually impresses me a lot. it's so nice to work on it as there's tons of space in the engine bay and everything just works. but the next thing I'm about to do which I know I'm gonna run into problems with is a custom turbo kit slapped onto it (bare in mind ill probably push less than 5 pounds) Its gonna be a fun project though as I can't afford anything faster so why not make it a project and make it as fast
You got the short straw with the Mazda. The Mazda 3 Sport has a 2.3L The Mazda 3 Sport 2.3 is it the best overall car here with quality, practicality, power, handling, comfort. It has issues with the automatic gearbox though compared to the 1.5
Yaris t sport all day was 1750 with no years no claims and 2 crash claims on motorbikes was fast for what it was kept up with my mates in Fabias golfs etc good on fuel reliable and unique
the 1.9tdi d engine from vw is bomb proof I know a few people who will only buy those. Car trottle have also shown miles and the new a4 they've bought which have 400k and 540k mies on both using the same 1.9 is the fabia vrs featured in the video
I have a 2002 SEAT Ibiza MK2 (6K1) 1.4 it cost me 500 pounds has 57K miles. It needed a new centre and back exhaust (due to rust) which cost a total of 75 pounds in parts and got it fitted for free by a friend. I did an insurance quote with 1 other named driver who has 12 years of no claims and my quote was only 750 pounds for the year without a black box. I am 17 and have no NCD.
I can vouch for the C2 VTS, it’s power is a little useless as it’s all at the top end, but they sound amazing with a good 4-1 exhaust and will out handle 90% of the cars for the price with a set of good Koni or bilstein shocks. Not a fast car by any means even my Abarth 500 will gap it, but my Abarth handles like shit compared to my mates c2 we put koni str.t dampers and H&R springs on his, my Abarth comes with koni FSD shocks and eibach springs AND has larger anti roll bars. But the c2 still is 100% better. It’s safe to Chuck around and predictable, it has lift off oversteer but it’s controllable and isn’t prone to under steering. Get yourself a Loeb edition c2 vts and you’ll get thicker anti roll bars by 1mm, nice red colour and graphics and red seats. Great thing about the C2 is my mate has had his for a year now, it’s been thrashed on the limiter daily, jumped big jumps at 70mph, given a good pushing in the corners and now has a Kevlar clutch and oil cooler. The only thing we have had to replace is the front top hats and the front ball joints. It’s a quality car, the interior might be a bit shit but it’s strong and well built, change out the steering wheel for a Citroen c3 or c4 and it’ll make it perfect, 100% a solid car 🤌
Be aware the ULEZ totally snookers you for the majority of VAG (VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat) 1.9TDI engines and it extends a lot more widely from 2021. Probably best to check diesels in general if you're doing much driving in London. Petrols of this era (2005 on) comply with Euro4 much easier generally than diesels do to Euro6.
Agreed - coming from London I'm literally just outside the 2021 ULEZ zone, and my girlfriend lives within the current ULEZ zone - I never drive towards central, it's not worth the £12.50!
I know the seller for Citroen C2 2:19 I’ve bought a Peugeot 206 from him but had few problems so I sold it but he’s good guy, You just have to check everything before you buy that’s it.
Having owned the Mazda 3 sport at 17 insurance was on the expensive side but the worst thing about it was rust arches and sills go rotten fast sold it and bought a fabia vrs don’t regret it one bit
Ford is the best for new drivers! Super cheap on insurance either a focus 1.6 petrol or a 1.4/1.5 diesel fiesta. Reliable too and cheap to repair as there's an abundance of parts
Best first car manufacturer has to be skoda, the hatchback they have skoda fabia has everything, nice and cheap solid interior and great infotainment system also really nice and smooth drive
My first car was a 1997 Toyota Carib bz Touring (not sure if you can get them in the uk) and that thing was great, 4AGE 20V Blacktop with 160HP and a 6 speed box. Was a great all round wagon.
Hey JB, love the video, great insight. I also have a Polo 9N and I can't say i'd have chosen another car as a first car. Dude, please do a fog light install for the VW polo 9N!!!! I'll be waiting on that video anxiously.
Haha good choice! As soon as the current situation clears up there are a whole bunch of mods I'd like to do to the Polo, so hopefully in summer a fog light install will appear...
@@CarsWithJB It runs very well, even though the mileage is on the higher side 130k. Every person that had a look on the engine said that sounds very well and can't see any issues.
I’m trying not to sound like an arse but are you planning on doing a video for more expensive first cars? I’m wanting to go for a newer first car around the 4-5k mark and not sure what you’d suggest?
Haha you don't sound like one! Definitely - I'll do some higher brackets soon for first cars, probably in a few weeks time. Also looking at doing a video on new first cars in the not-too-distant future!
The vrs is head and shoulders above rest power torque mpg I had over 60 in my mk 4 golf with same engine tuning potential reliability it's got the lot and the road tax is good too
Hey JB I found a Alfa Romeo mito TB ... about 120 hp I think that pretty good but it’s a Alfa ... idk abt reliability of it but I think it looks rlly good
As above - also I use the details I got from the insurance research I did, which usually gets my quotes as low as poss: ruclips.net/video/ph7eyV-1RIk/видео.html
It could be different in the UK but in Ireland insurance is based a lot on horsepower rather than engine size, most 2.0 Diesel Avengers make 120 brake but it could be a lot mpre expensive in the UK because it’s a 2 litre
Had a swift sport it was great fun but it's possible to get 40mpg in the real world. I also didn't like the non upgradable stereo or poor boot space. Had a Fabia VRS and it was truly epic. 200bhp with nearly 400nm torque. Rapid.
I've just bought a Yaris Sr 1.3 as my first car. Got it for 600 with 90k miles on it and a new clutch fitted. Lowest quote I've got is 1.2k and now I'm thinking I should have got the t sport 🤦♀️there's also a decent modding community for them
@@ΑθανάσιοςΣαϊνίδης Nothing much really. Had to replace the drop links numerous times and top mounts once which are both a cheap and easy fix. Had zero issues with the engine or gearbox - but expected suspension related problems.
You could have also added the Nissan micra sr 160 to this list 0-60 of 9.8 second and you can get one with fair low milage for well under £2k so just a fast as the fiesta
Well for a first car you would want it to be quite reliable so probably something japanese as almost all of them are bombproof or maybe a German as they're reliable and easy to find parts for if they do break down
i can say fabia vrs from personal experience is a solid choice. But I have no idea how you managed to get that insurance quote. One thing to look at is rust right behind the front wheels
Big fan of 5 of these cars...sorry JB, the vRS is still a diesel! I've only driven 1- the C2 VTS, although only been rallying in it so no idea what it's like on the road! I'd pick the Yaris or Swift though, if my commute was on b roads and not motorways I'd even be considering swapping out the GS for a new Swift...but it's not ☺ Forgot the question bit- VW have the widest variety of decent 1st cars, but Fiestas are still just the best car for nearly everyone (I've still never owned a Fiesta).
Haha I'm gunna have to disagree with you on this one, the vRS is my fav of the bunch! Having been in one, it boggles the mind how well it pulls, and I'm not a diesel fan by any means (i.e. if they had made a petrol version I would have been all over it!) - VW group generally would be my pick, but can't argue with a fiesta!
I'm being tempted to purchase a fabia MK1 vrs seeing on on autotrader in black and really good condition with lower than average milage. Might be a good first car/project 😸😸
I'd say VW make solid first cars not biased at all

Yeah there's plenty of it - but if you can get through a year or so with a black box it will help your future insurance!
Fair shout, and that is a very decent car history haha - quick changes though surely between 2018 to now?
Stay safe, dude! Another great video! Good shout on the Yaris. They're so underrated generally. Tiny factory sleeper.
Thanks as always boss, you too! The Yaris I wasn't even aware of when choosing my first car, it's a really decent offering
Like the thumbnail the fabia is just the one yo go one I av got and never had a problem there bulletproof and becoming rare
Agreed - all about that Fabia!
Could you do one for second cars? Like 19 year olds looking for cheap 8ish second 0-60 cars. Love the content keep it up 👍🏻
Joseph Hemming mk5 Astra Sri 1.9 150 and the 120 ive just got a 120 and it’s mapped to 189 with lots of torque, cheaper than my 1.4 307 on the insurance and beats most things I’ve raced st150s, fabia vrs, Leon fr tdi and my mates dads a6😂
I did a second cars video actually, but aimed at 21yos, I can have a look!
Cars With JB ive been wanting somthing like this aimed at 18/19 yo second cars
Nailed that vid once again... becoming the norm for you my friend!!!
you mentioned the vts c2 but i would also say the c2 code is a good proposition as well. Where I live it costs £1600 to insure for a 17 year old and you can say it's a limited edition vts except with a 1.6 instead of a 1.4 (in some cars), heated front tan leather sport seats and special paint with a few other bits and bobs. 8.3 to 60 as well :)
That's not bad at all - didn't consider the code at all! But I'll have a look into it
@@CarsWithJB It does look really slick in the grey i may add
Vauxhall make the best first cars IMO e.g. Corsa, Agila, Viva and the smaller engined Astras
Very fair contender for it!
The Fabia VRS has the same engine as my little polo, best first car in my opinion is either the Fabia or a polo with the same engine as it’s cheap to run and easy to tune to get great performance.
Yeah fair enough - the PD130 really pulls!
Yeah they have tonnes of torque specially I’ve had mine remapped 👀
I have a tdci ztec s which was my First car, I’d always go for the diesel over the petrol because of how cheap it is to run, and it’s very reliable from what I’ve seen, mines an 05 and I got it for £850
That's very decent - the Zetec S is a nice first car either way!
Skoda fabia my first car loved it after 3 years I've still got it
A man after my own heart - I miss my Fabia!
Well If you want a bit of driving fun, comfort and style get a BMW E87 1Series. They are a bit more expensive but 116i and 118i Models are good enough
Yeah very fair shouts, can even go for the diesels!
Seat Leon is another one which deserved to be in the list... But I'm between Skoda Fabia, and Mazda 3
You should look at a fiat grande punto 1.9 multi jet, cost me £900 for my first year and it got to 186BHP on a single remap. Very underrated cars!
That's strong on the remap! I included it in a previous first car video, but never knew you could get 186 out of it!
I had a Forfour brabus for my second car. For a 1.5T, it wasn’t too bad!
Yeah that's strong, I'd have loved a Brabus Roadster!
The Swift is a good car. Quite small and cheap interior. But good handling and power.
Yeah agreed, VW group do very well with first cars! And that's so dead, sorry to hear that man!
So far cant fault the civic at all
Sorry to hear RE the Polo, but glad it worked out with the Civic!
I'd agree with most of that 👍 if insurance really is a big deal then get the Skoda pd100 and map it because most haven't been thrashed like the VRS
Yeah very fair shout there, both of the PD blocks have a lot of potential!
Definitely an unreal engine - really keeps going! CarThrottle have proven its longevity for sure
I know this is an old video now, but an honourable mention is the Renault Clio GT 1.6 Petrol. Its got 130hp and without a black box can be insured at around £1500.
Yeah definitely a fair shout too - one for a future video!
Love my 06 vw polo. Amazing little car only passed last October but I love it and am now a VW fan
Great to hear!
@@CarsWithJB recently installed a ramair filter and I have a tailbomb exhaust. Would be good if you made a video on these mods.
Great vid man hope you’re in good health during these crap times 🙌 Alfa Romeo 147 is a nippy car with dirt cheep insurance
Haha cheers boss - and didn't consider the Alfa!
@@CarsWithJB Becuase reliability is not that great.
When u wanna AR only with Diesel or V6 (if u have money), not twin spark
After taking apart 2 Mini clubmans, pretty sure a mini one is a bulletproof first car, If you ignore the timing belt issues that is
My girlfriend has one and it's definitely decent, quite nippy with the 1.4L engine too
been an owner of a Citroen C4 1.4 (90 bhp) for a while now and have to say its a pretty enjoyable car including modifying it and so on I have a few videos about it on my channel but I will soon upload a new one with everything I've done to it and for a 1.4 it actually impresses me a lot. it's so nice to work on it as there's tons of space in the engine bay and everything just works. but the next thing I'm about to do which I know I'm gonna run into problems with is a custom turbo kit slapped onto it (bare in mind ill probably push less than 5 pounds) Its gonna be a fun project though as I can't afford anything faster so why not make it a project and make it as fast
Sounds sick, especially with space to work on it - that's a key issue with the VW group superminis!
You got the short straw with the Mazda. The Mazda 3 Sport has a 2.3L
The Mazda 3 Sport 2.3 is it the best overall car here with quality, practicality, power, handling, comfort. It has issues with the automatic gearbox though compared to the 1.5
Can you make the exact same video with new cars please 👍
Haha I can have a look!
whats your budget on the newer car?
Yaris t sport all day was 1750 with no years no claims and 2 crash claims on motorbikes was fast for what it was kept up with my mates in Fabias golfs etc good on fuel reliable and unique
Definitely a great car for the money - wish I'd known about them when I got my first car!
can tell this is gonna be good start making another now before ive even watched the first ;)
Haha I'm already on it!
the 1.9tdi d engine from vw is bomb proof I know a few people who will only buy those. Car trottle have also shown miles and the new a4 they've bought which have 400k and 540k mies on both using the same 1.9 is the fabia vrs featured in the video
Yeah it's incredible - really keeps on going!
Ayyyyy can’t believe my car made it to the top didn’t think you’d find out what one is
Passed my test last month and I’m in an R53 Mini Cooper S - absolutely stupid for insurance but worth it imo
Congrats both on passing your test and getting a cooper S!
I would choose the Mazda 3 or fiesta St or focus st mk2 or maybe an old escort lol 🚗🚙🏎🚘
Haha fairs - the quote I got on an ST was £4K!
Ah that's interesting - cool to hear!
Cars With JB Yh bro
you should do the best jdm cars for first drivers, could be interesting to see how they compare to other British/ german cars
Dizer Done t sport is pretty JDM, so is Suzuki, and Mazda
Yeah I can have a look - I've been planning some JDM videos recently anyway!
@@CarsWithJB I'd love a jdm car as my first but i can't find much about the insurance and general costs for 17 year olds in the uk
Having owned the Mazda 3 sport at 17 insurance was on the expensive side but the worst thing about it was rust arches and sills go rotten fast sold it and bought a fabia vrs don’t regret it one bit
Thanks for the insight! I do love the vRS, it does bang
6:35 2.0L with 148hp, and 0-60 in 9s? Damn that’s pretty slow, maybe it has low torque?
Reason that’s the case is because it’s a heavy car unfortunately, it’ll be bulletproof though, it’s a Mazda at the end of the day
@@dhd7327 oh yeah makes sense, didn’t think of that when I commented
4:54 I’ve got a fabia vrs for my first car. Best decision I ever made
Ford is the best for new drivers!
Super cheap on insurance either a focus 1.6 petrol or a 1.4/1.5 diesel fiesta.
Reliable too and cheap to repair as there's an abundance of parts
Very fair shout - and you have the Ka too at the very low end!
Toyota Yaris 1.4 Diesel is my first car and love ittt
Very decent!
Best first car manufacturer has to be skoda, the hatchback they have skoda fabia has everything, nice and cheap solid interior and great infotainment system also really nice and smooth drive
Haha as I had a Skoda as my first car I have to agree
Great vid my first car was(and still is) My Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 tjet 120bhp with insurance at 1750
I do like the MiTo - you've done well there!
@@CarsWithJBThanks. Still can't believe my luck got the car last Wednesday the only 120bhp version in Northern Ireland for sale at that time.
I say the best first car is a basic ford mondeo my dad has one 2011 and its a fun car to drive and I’m considering getting on for myself
That would be a nice first car - the Mondeo is a classic too!
My first car was a 1997 Toyota Carib bz Touring (not sure if you can get them in the uk) and that thing was great, 4AGE 20V Blacktop with 160HP and a 6 speed box. Was a great all round wagon.
Can imagine that was fun, we may have gotten them as the Corolla instead of the Carib, not sure!
I recently got a Honda civic 2007 1.4 as my first car. It was £1400 and insurance £1700.
Very nice - how well does it run? Congrats on the purchase!
Received quotes for all these cars and all fetched over £2700 🤔 I live in a quiet village and I'm age 22
How about 4 door hatches? Cheap, practical, manual and fun to go on the twisties with.
The vrs is head and shoulders above rest power torque mpg I had over 60 in my mk 4 golf with same engine tuning potential reliability it's got the lot and the road tax is good too
Agreed - it's such a beast!
Can you do a video on best first cars with awd? I live in norway and there is a lot of snow in the winters.
That's an interesting one, had never considered it before - I'll have a look into it!
Hey JB I found a Alfa Romeo mito TB ... about 120 hp I think that pretty good but it’s a Alfa ... idk abt reliability of it but I think it looks rlly good
I love the MiTo - really decent car! Included it in a previous video on cheap first cars
My first car was a Corsa SXI 07 reg.
Very decent, did well there!
Am I the only one who’s getting ridiculous insurance prices, like all over £2000 with every single car on this list?
the skoda fabia vrs 5 door would be a nice first car.
Agreed - a very quick one, too!
This video makes me miss my C2 VTS, such a brilliant amount of fun from such a tiny car 👍🏻😁
Literally cant find a car with any insurance less than 2,500 it’s annoying me now
A great video i love these
Let's hope it lives up to expectations!
I think Ford make great first car , the ka ,fiesta ,focus especially fiesta and focus in zetec s trim or st line
Yeah a fair few of them out there - they definitely have a decent old vs new selection too
How are you insuring a 2L and a 1.9L as a 17y old for so cheap?
It's simple, they have low BHP.
As above - also I use the details I got from the insurance research I did, which usually gets my quotes as low as poss: ruclips.net/video/ph7eyV-1RIk/видео.html
Dodge surprisingly have cheap insurance going for them, got a quote on a 2008 Dodge Avenger for €1900
That's very decent - I'll add a reminder to have a look next time I'm doing an insurance video
It could be different in the UK but in Ireland insurance is based a lot on horsepower rather than engine size, most 2.0 Diesel Avengers make 120 brake but it could be a lot mpre expensive in the UK because it’s a 2 litre
I love ur content but the problem is that cars here in macedonia isnt that cheap if that citroen c2 is less then 2k there here is 2.5 or 3k+
That is tough, we are very lucky here in the UK with our second hand prices!
Had a swift sport it was great fun but it's possible to get 40mpg in the real world. I also didn't like the non upgradable stereo or poor boot space. Had a Fabia VRS and it was truly epic. 200bhp with nearly 400nm torque. Rapid.
Cool to see you've had both! The vRS is definitely a favourite, such a decent offering for the money!
@@CarsWithJB agreed. It's such a good all rounder the one I had was a rocket ship and would still do 60+mpg on the motorway.
I've just bought a Yaris Sr 1.3 as my first car. Got it for 600 with 90k miles on it and a new clutch fitted. Lowest quote I've got is 1.2k and now I'm thinking I should have got the t sport 🤦♀️there's also a decent modding community for them
Haha that's unfortunate - but still decent for a first car at 1.3k!
The 1.8 sr is actually slower than the t sport, so get the t sport 😂😂
I love my C2 VTS! Incredibly fun and surprisingly quick
So sick that you have one - they're such good little cars!
Did you have any expensive problems with the c2? Cause i am looking to buy one
@@ΑθανάσιοςΣαϊνίδης Nothing much really. Had to replace the drop links numerous times and top mounts once which are both a cheap and easy fix. Had zero issues with the engine or gearbox - but expected suspension related problems.
@@calj2405 suspension is really easy for me. I'm a mechanic i just don't want to buy one and keep spending money to fix it
Cracking video JB well done mate 👏👏👏
Cheers Adam!
You could have also added the Nissan micra sr 160 to this list 0-60 of 9.8 second and you can get one with fair low milage for well under £2k so just a fast as the fiesta
Good shout, not one I considered, will keep note for next time!
Cars With JB I’ve got a 1 litre one so been looking at the sr for ideas and parts haha
Yaris ts - the best car in the world
Haha at least a decent first car!
Well for a first car you would want it to be quite reliable so probably something japanese as almost all of them are bombproof or maybe a German as they're reliable and easy to find parts for if they do break down
Agree on both points!
I'm struggling to get my insurance lower then 3000
i can say fabia vrs from personal experience is a solid choice. But I have no idea how you managed to get that insurance quote. One thing to look at is rust right behind the front wheels
Just the standard quote I always do - I was surprised at how cheap it was myself!
T sport was my first car 🥺 I miss it
What a beaut! You did well there either way
I got a quote for mk6 golf gti 1.4k second year driving and I hav 3 points
Big fan of 5 of these cars...sorry JB, the vRS is still a diesel! I've only driven 1- the C2 VTS, although only been rallying in it so no idea what it's like on the road! I'd pick the Yaris or Swift though, if my commute was on b roads and not motorways I'd even be considering swapping out the GS for a new Swift...but it's not ☺
Forgot the question bit- VW have the widest variety of decent 1st cars, but Fiestas are still just the best car for nearly everyone (I've still never owned a Fiesta).
@@CarsWithJB The vRS is impressive enough, but revving the balls off a petrol engine can't be beaten!
I'm being tempted to purchase a fabia MK1 vrs seeing on on autotrader in black and really good condition with lower than average milage. Might be a good first car/project 😸😸
I know its not on the list but I've found clio's are pretty cheap and some are relatively fast!!
Automobile Heaven reliable though??? They are French 😂😂😂😂
I tried getting a quote on a 182 for this video and it was well over £2.5k!
