Funny story , I took my 10 year old son to see Eric Clapton back in 2007. It was his first big Concert at Arco arena in Sacramento. I wanted him to see a master guitarist for his first big show so I took him to see EC. Robert Cray opened up the show. On the way home my son says he thought Eric Clapton was just ok, But that first guy was amazing!
Clapton is my biggest influence and the reason I picked up guitar but I've seen him and Cray two times each. Both times Bob was better. He's such a great entertainer.

@@rmiller9969 yea I’ve borrowed a ton of Clapton’s licks. He and Robert Cray co-wrote Old love btw. I even bought a custom shop purple Robert Cray strat. I ended up trading it. I wish I didn’t and just kept it and paid cash for the other guitar I got. The Cray strat is for very very clean playing and I love gain even though I love blues, rock, pop and even funk, funk is clean of course with compression.
I know I'm late to this party, but I was at this concert. I remember this performance, and seeing SO MANY stellar blues players in one day, including BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, and the list goes on, sparked in me a love for the blues. I was 15 when I was there in Dallas in 2004, and my life was changed. I don't say that lightly, that is not me being overly dramatic. I was a hard rock/metal guy until this concert, and I had started playing guitar the year before in 2003. Since then I have spent the last 16 1/2 years listening to, learning, writing, and playing the blues. Thank you for reacting to this, and taking me back to that important day in my life. ✌
My dad would watch this crossroads all the time when I was growing up and I remember distinctly this performance being what made me want to play guitar. As well as the first time I heard a guitar mimic something else and notice it. That would be Robert cray imitating the clock ticking back and forth while singing. He’s the reason I love the blues. Easily one of my favorite guitarists ever.

I love Robert Cray so much. I saw The Robert Cray band perform on their tour for the "Strong Persuader" album (1986/1987). Most underrated blues guitarist in my opinion. So amazing. I know what I'm listening to today. :)

My first concert ever saw Robert Cray band as the opening act. This was in 87 and I was 12 yrs old. I didn't know the blues, or basically anything but Top 40....but I instantly fell in love with his sound. Thanks for this "dealer's choice" because I haven't heard his music in years. I'm going to dig back into his catalogue tonight. Bravo.
That whole Crossroads’s festival was on fire. Robert was on fire. You need to do Eric Johnson’s Desert Rose from that festival and Jonny Lang’s tune. All incredible.

Gospel, soul, R&B, blues, jazz, - I’ll do it all while you guys push your pedals and try to polish up… I’ll be raw… I’ll be the music,,, and I’ll let the music be more important than I will ever try to be and that in itself will be magical.

Saw Robert Cray a few years ago. I knew who he was so I knew what I was letting myself in for. He still blew my mind. What makes him super special is that he is a vocalist first and his guitar lines really highlight this. He literally sings with his guitar when he isn't using his mouth. As you said in this video "he is a master of his craft"

My girlfriend of nearly 7 years and I saw him in UK. I'm 29 now and was a fan since I was 19 as my friend and I grew up with guitars. I saw him live for the first time with my buddy (the same friend) up in the stands as he got his ticket later and my gf and I together. His encore (or song before) was time makes two and since then we've had to work at our relationship and grow stronger so I will never forget the chills we both had watching this incredible gift of a man we have perform at his very best. I always thought that Robert was a mixture of George Benson, Buddy Guy and Albert King. What an amazing talent! Been a fan since the early 80's, have seen him in concert 3 times so far.
I think he is more a mixture of Sam Cooke, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and Bobby “Blue” Bland. He’s more soul blues than blues blues which I prefer much more. I am 30 and heard about him through my dad and paid to go see him live twice with my dad and both concerts he was amazing. Have also seen many interviews and he comes up as such a humble guy.

Such a treat to see this cat play live. Such a captivating talent. I don't know of anyone who bears their emotions on stage like Robert, and it's evident in his soulful voice and playing. First time I saw him was in the late 80's, and I was hooked.
Love it when players audiate - as you sooo succinctly put it. I first heard Jimi do it, but then heard George Benson & Cray do it, and was blown away by it. Just recently found Naudo (Brazilian player) who also does it nicely.
Had the good fortune to see Robert dozens of times in the mid to late 70s when he was based in Eugene, OR. I'd get off of work early waitering at local restaurants and get in before the cover charge started at the local bars where he played. He wasn't playing his own songs yet, but he played every electric blues song in existence and I got a thorough blues education. He always had the great guitar chops and the sweet blues vocals. No one better to hear all the blues standards from to build upon what I had heard from BB King and Eric Clapton in the late 60s and early 70s. When Animal House was filmed in Eugene, John Belushi saw Robert and was let up on stage to sing with the band. Voila! Belushi came up with idea for The Blues Brothers.

Friend, you are awesome. At one time I was so imbued with this performance. It is incomprehensible to the mind how it was possible to play such a strong thing in such a format (South, heat, beer, party). And here it is really difficult to make out it in terms of technique, because Robert Kray sang it from the depths of his soul. It is immediately felt. Such musicians are 1 in a million. And the problem is that many people seem to be able to play, but to bring their soul in this way is already something divine. In any case, well done, greetings from Russia)

We are brothers from another mother. In 1986 at the OMNI in Atlanta Georgia I went to see Huey Lewis and Robert Cray opened. We stay for about 20 minutes of Huey because as far as we were concerned we had seen the show. I think that's pretty astute for a 17 year old. I have seen him several times later but the show i always remember.
I saw Robert Cray at The Royal Albert Hall, London for my 18th birthday in 2014. An absolutely magical night. He has so much soul in his playing and his singing it just draws you in and keeps you there hypnotised! Thanks for sharing this video. Oh Michael, as you would say, this hit me on many levels. My lady and I have been together for 51 years. We have been enjoying Robert for over 38 and just caught a show last year. RC and I graduated together from the same high school. I used to see him play at keggars during that time, and years later, saw him play at several venues in the NW. I believe it was Robert that got Albert Collins to play at our high school graduation party.
Robert Cray is so talented on so many levels that it is just not fair. If I had an ounce of talent that he does I would be great. Great singer, great guitar player, great songwriter. It's sad that he didn't enjoy more commercial success. This song in particular should have been a hit single. Bob is great, I feel bad for people that don't know about Robert Cray because he is an amazing joy that everyone should experience in their lifetime. It is not very often that musicians come across your life that are so influential as Robert Cray. I can't say enough about him. He transcends artistry.

I saw him live a few years ago at the Bourbon and Barbecue Festival here in New Orleans and he played this song. I had no idea that this song even existed. When he played this live I was like WTF? The whole concert was just crazy good. It was my first time seeing Robert Cray live after listening to his music for years. I could not believe how great he was in person with a 4 piece band. His albums do not capture the true spirit of Robert Cray live. Such an amazing musician and person as well. Can't wait to see him here in New Orleans again!!!!
I seem to recall an Austin City Limits tribute to SRV that featured Robert Cray. Even as a young teenager I remember being in awe of the raw emotion this man exuded. Nice choice and much appreciated reminder! 👍 Thank you Michael.

This is the crossroads where his guitar switches from the sunburst to dark blue mid-song. Seen it a million times. Other thing with RC is if he stands too close to the mic when soloing you can hear him mutter out what he's playing so awesome.

The times Jonathan are talking about were in the late 70s. Cray was pretty big by the time the 90s rolled around - too big to play Eugene much except on an opening act for the Dead...

What kills me is that when I review the youtube vids of R. Cray singing this tune over the years, there's only 10 - 12 K views on average for any given video. I remember the first time I saw this on the EC festival DVD about 14 (?) years ago, I was so completely blow away. I'd been listening to blues guitar for 30+ years plus prior to that moment, and then I'm suddenly thinking that this song may be the best blues tune I'd ever heard. Crazy that the general public is unaware of how good it is....

I was listening to this song on my "recent" playlist today while doing my weekly grocery run, and started thinking about how much of the music you've shared and analysed has become part of my life in the last couple of years. I can't express how much this song, the lyrics, and the raw guitar playing speak to me, and your reaction and analysis and anecdotes all play some part in that. The same is true of Marcus King and Shakey Graves and Tyler Childers and Lisa Hannigan (and Damien Rice) and The White Buffalo and Billy Strings and Arlo McKinley and more. This crossroads dvd had loads of great performances, I remember letting the dvd run and a few songs after this one is Steve Vai ripping. First time I ever heard him play and it’s an amazing performance, instantly became a fan. I totally recommend checking out the Vai performance from this show. I also love Joe Walsh’s performances on this show
Wow, thanks for giving a nod to Mr. Cray. I used to see him play around small clubs here in Portland in the early 80s. I still have his 'Bad Influence' on LP. He had a GREAT band including Richard Cousins on bass and Warren Rand on alto sax. HIGHLY recommended LP.
Michael what else can you say? It’s Robert Cray. I play guitar and I use the term ‘play’ loosely. Ha. Im not a pro but fairly good. Anyway a few years back my wife and I went to see and hear him perform. It was outdoors at a lake in SoCal and transitioning to dark time. The venue to begin with was just very cool. Outside with his stage platform right at the sand just at the waters edge. The audience was up on a small hill with people on blankets on the grass. Everyone could get pretty close. I was a fan to begin with and had some of his music. He blew me away. I believe he played his guitar all night without a guitar pick. Wow, what a moving performance with feeling and soul!!!! I was at that show at the Cotton Bowl. It was so hot middle of summer but that performance gave me the chills like I’d never had. I was blown away. Still trying get get my hand to stretch far enough to catch those bass notes.

RC was the first guitarist who actually choked me up with his playing in a concert. It was like he was playing and singing to ME and each and every one of the few hundred of us in that small theater.
I've taught skills (multiple genres) my whole life. Ive started learning The Guitar later in life and decided in stead of deep diving into it which is typical for me. I though t I would leave out the theory and just learn to play. I did not want to get bogged down and I did not want to lose the the fun of why I was learning but... you make it very engaging, interesting and fun. These particular videos are really well don! I went to see Boz Scaggs and Robert Cray they're blues tour, to tell you the truth it was awesome. Robert Cray was doing some phenomenal things on the guitar as you know. I was disappointed when Boz Scaggs played loan me a dime maybe it's because no one can play that song better than Skydog did it but he had a guitar player that wasn't versed in the Blues. Back to Robert Cray unbelievably talented and what he was doing on the guitar during shiver all over still blowing my mind

My son and I just saw Robert Cray last night and he closed with this song. It was amazing. My 17 year old was blown away.

I saw him open for Framton and he was absolutely killer. Fantastic to see a guy who isnt going to for shred blues, and just delivers great phrasing.

Have loved Robert cray since the 80's. She right next door.
Such a treat to see this cat play live. Such a captivating talent. I don't know of anyone who bears their emotions on stage like Robert, and it's evident in his soulful voice and playing. First time I saw him was in the late 80's, and I was hooked.
Love it when players audiate - as you sooo succinctly put it. I first heard Jimi do it, but then heard George Benson & Cray do it, and was blown away by it. Just recently found Naudo (Brazilian player) who also does it nicely.
Had the good fortune to see Robert dozens of times in the mid to late 70s when he was based in Eugene, OR. I'd get off of work early waitering at local restaurants and get in before the cover charge started at the local bars where he played. He wasn't playing his own songs yet, but he played every electric blues song in existence and I got a thorough blues education. He always had the great guitar chops and the sweet blues vocals. No one better to hear all the blues standards from to build upon what I had heard from BB King and Eric Clapton in the late 60s and early 70s. When Animal House was filmed in Eugene, John Belushi saw Robert and was let up on stage to sing with the band. Voila! Belushi came up with idea for The Blues Brothers.

Some year ago (1984) I saw robert cray on tv. I was a 12y old boy in Brazil. At that moment, I knew that I’d like to express myself through a guitar. 2018 I had the chance to see Robert in person in a show in São Paulo. Thank you for the video.

Friend, you are awesome. At one time I was so imbued with this performance. It is incomprehensible to the mind how it was possible to play such a strong thing in such a format (South, heat, beer, party). And here it is really difficult to make out it in terms of technique, because Robert Kray sang it from the depths of his soul. It is immediately felt. Such musicians are 1 in a million. And the problem is that many people seem to be able to play, but to bring their soul in this way is already something divine. In any case, well done, greetings from Russia)
The guy is flawless... Live, in the studio, voice, guitar, timing... Clean, flawless delivery.... He writes some great music too.. One of my all time faves!
We are brothers from another mother. In 1986 at the OMNI in Atlanta Georgia I went to see Huey Lewis and Robert Cray opened. We stay for about 20 minutes of Huey because as far as we were concerned we had seen the show. I think that's pretty astute for a 17 year old. I have seen him several times later but the show i always remember.
I saw Robert Cray at The Royal Albert Hall, London for my 18th birthday in 2014. An absolutely magical night. He has so much soul in his playing and his singing it just draws you in and keeps you there hypnotised! Thanks for sharing this video. Oh Michael, as you would say, this hit me on many levels. My lady and I have been together for 51 years. We have been enjoying Robert for over 38 and just caught a show last year. His combination of soulful singing and emotional playing never disappoints. Thanks for your vid and insightful break downs.

RC and I graduated together from the same high school. I used to see him play at keggars during that time, and years later, saw him play at several venues in the NW. I believe it was Robert that got Albert Collins to play at our high school graduation party.
Robert Cray is so talented on so many levels that it is just not fair. If I had an ounce of talent that he does I would be great. Great singer, great guitar player, great songwriter. It's sad that he didn't enjoy more commercial success. This song in particular should have been a hit single. Bob is great, I feel bad for people that don't know about Robert Cray because he is an amazing joy that everyone should experience in their lifetime. It is not very often that musicians come across your life that are so influential as Robert Cray. I can't say enough about him. He transcends artistry.

@@Guitargate True story here. I have been a huge Robert Cray fan for years, and had never heard this song. I saw him live a few years ago at the Bourbon and Barbecue Festival here in New Orleans and he played this song. I had no idea that this song even existed. When he played this live I was like WTF? The whole concert was just crazy good. It was my first time seeing Robert Cray live after listening to his music for years. I could not believe how great he was in person with a 4 piece band. His albums do not capture the true spirit of Robert Cray live. Such an amazing musician and person as well. Can't wait to see him here in New Orleans again!!!!
I seem to recall an Austin City Limits tribute to SRV that featured Robert Cray. Even as a young teenager I remember being in awe of the raw emotion this man exuded. Nice choice and much appreciated reminder! 👍 Thank you Michael.

This is the crossroads where his guitar switches from the sunburst to dark blue mid-song. Seen it a million times. Other thing with RC is if he stands too close to the mic when soloing you can hear him mutter out what he's playing so awesome.

The times Jonathan are talking about were in the late 70s. Cray was pretty big by the time the 90s rolled around - too big to play Eugene much except on an opening act for the Dead...

What kills me is that when I review the youtube vids of R. Cray singing this tune over the years, there's only 10 - 12 K views on average for any given video. I remember the first time I saw this on the EC festival DVD about 14 (?) years ago, I was so completely blow away. I'd been listening to blues guitar for 30+ years plus prior to that moment, and then I'm suddenly thinking that this song may be the best blues tune I'd ever heard. Crazy that the general public is unaware of how good it is....

I was listening to this song on my "recent" playlist today while doing my weekly grocery run, and started thinking about how much of the music you've shared and analysed has become part of my life in the last couple of years. I can't express how much this song, the lyrics, and the raw guitar playing speak to me, and your reaction and analysis and anecdotes all play some part in that. The same is true of Marcus King and Shakey Graves and Tyler Childers and Lisa Hannigan (and Damien Rice) and The White Buffalo and Billy Strings and Arlo McKinley and more. Cheers, mate, from an Aussie wanderer always in search of new music that speaks to and resonates with that deepest level of the human psyche. Keep up the fantastic work, mate, sharing your love and knowledge. There's not a really great live version on youtube, but I guess you'd appreciate "the road is not your only friend" by the Aussie guitarist and songwriter, Jeff Lang.
My dad and I love watching this crossroads dvd, and this performance always stood out to both of us as something special.
This crossroads dvd had loads of great performances, I remember letting the dvd run and a few songs after this one is Steve Vai ripping. First time I ever heard him play and it’s an amazing performance, instantly became a fan. I totally recommend checking out the Vai performance from this show. I also love Joe Walsh’s performances on this show

Wow, thanks for giving a nod to Mr. Cray. I used to see him play around small clubs here in Portland in the early 80s. I still have his 'Bad Influence' on LP. He had a GREAT band including Richard Cousins on bass and Warren Rand on alto sax. HIGHLY recommended LP.

Michael what else can you say? It’s Robert Cray. I play guitar and I use the term ‘play’ loosely. Ha. Im not a pro but fairly good. Anyway a few years back my wife and I went to see and hear him perform. It was outdoors at a lake in SoCal and transitioning to dark time. The venue to begin with was just very cool. Outside with his stage platform right at the sand just at the waters edge. The audience was up on a small hill with people on blankets on the grass. Everyone could get pretty close. I was a fan to begin with and had some of his music. He blew me away. I believe he played his guitar all night without a guitar pick. Wow, what a moving performance with feeling and soul!!!! I was at that show at the Cotton Bowl. It was so hot middle of summer but that performance gave me the chills like I’d never had. I was blown away. Still trying get get my hand to stretch far enough to catch those bass notes.

RC was the first guitarist who actually choked me up with his playing in a concert. It was like he was playing and singing to ME and each and every one of the few hundred of us in that small theater.

I've taught skills (multiple genres) my whole life. Ive started learning The Guitar later in life and decided in stead of deep diving into it which is typical for me. I though t I would leave out the theory and just learn to play. I did not want to get bogged down and I did not want to lose the the fun of why I was learning but... you make it very engaging, interesting and fun. These particular videos are really well don! I went to see Boz Scaggs and Robert Cray they're blues tour, to tell you the truth it was awesome. Robert Cray was doing some phenomenal things on the guitar as you know. I was disappointed when Boz Scaggs played loan me a dime maybe it's because no one can play that song better than Skydog did it but he had a guitar player that wasn't versed in the Blues. Back to Robert Cray unbelievably talented and what he was doing on the guitar during shiver all over still blowing my mind

I love that you did this. I tell anyone who will listen anout Robert Cray. I noodle around on guitar and most the stuff you say goes right over but you usually feature all the guitarists I love. There is a video of Eric Clapton and Robert Cray playing old love on David Sandborn old show. Cray is the highlight on that song for me.
