    I purchased 300 Astra Super platinum blades. They are both good for comfort and for sharpness. I can get 4-5 shaves with these if used correctly. I shave with one side until it gets dull and then I just flip it and use the other side. I did picked up a 10 pack of feather blades just to try but astra is my go 2 for blades

    Gillette 7o’Clock is great. But there is the yellow one, which is even! It is called 7o’Clock Sharp Edge.

    Nice video, as always. I think all blades have two characteristics: sharpness and smoothness. For example, Feather is very sharp but not smooth (not my cup of tea) and Derby is medium sharp but very smooth, and for my soft beard that works well.

    Great informative video Paul. I understand you make this a few years ago and your collection and choices are ever changing; same as with most wet shaving enthusiasts. You concentrated on blade sharpness here, however, I find there is a triangle of variables to consider: Sharpness, comfort, and longevity. I realize some would add cost but one could drive themselves completely mad with this cost per pass business. I believe Feather blades are very sharp. Having said that, I find a low comfort level. I can really feel the blade and it is a bit rough...like shaving with a hacksaw blade. Then there is the fact I can only get two or three 3 pass shaves out of them. Like you, I use them in a mild razor. Personna blades are more comfortable, but I found a limited longevity in them, even the med prep/lab blades. Some of the best for comfort and longevity are Schick and Wilkinson Sword. I can hardly tell the blade is in my razor. They are that smooth. Schick blades have a great longevity with a simple stainless blade lasting for 30 plus passes...that is the over 8 shaves for me....it shows no signs of tugging, plucking, or dragging and delivers a DFS still. As you say, blades are a personal choice depending on types of skin, beard, razor, shaving lather, and preparation. I just think any discussion on razor blades should consider the three aforementioned variables to get a complete picture of blade desirability. Thank you for doing your videos and I hope my input helps further the discussion. Take care as always. Todd

      Todd, the three different characteristics, as you say. I did try Feather Hi-Stainless for something like 14 or 15 shaves. Most of the shaves, the blade felt smooth. Definitely very sharp for at least 13 of the first shaves. I stopped using the individual blade only because of the reduced sharpness and the reduced smoothness in the last few shaves. Longevity was certainly good.

    My fist blade brand were Derby Extra , only last for 2 shaves. Terible blade,but cost 6 euro 100 pcs. Now i Got 300 russian Voskhod coming to my way and a 8 euro AliExpress qshave razor. Im used to shave with a 5/8 straight razor, so i like things sharp and use DE blades max 2 times. Feather i newer tried because of the very high price in Europe. Every shave goes with Proraso preshave and soap. Cheers

      I thought Feathers were too sharp, I don't really cut or even nick myself very much at all . They do give me razor burn, I only ever used one blade, but it is not really smooth. The sharpness is great for a guy with Tough skin and thick whiskers. So far I've liked Wilkinsons the most .

    Hi Paul,
    One of the most important factor regarding blades is their repeatability. When it comes to Derby, they have an opinion of being very low repeatable, I mean, one may be very sharp and the other, very dull. Personally, I use Merkur blades. They are very sharp, very mild and they are 100% repeatable, so they are all the same (I guess they have really good quality control in the factory). I wish you would mention about repeatability of presented blades in some future videos. Anyway, very good video, Paul. Thanks a lot.

    Cracking video! I've been looking for a blade comparison / opinion / review type thing on Razor Blades, and yours is one of the only ones that I found that was clear, concise and to the point! Great stuff! Derby blades have been tghe only ones I've used since I started safety razor shaving last November. The price is so low but the shave quality is great on them.. I've been looking for a catch but can't find one!! :-) £5 for 100!?!?! Amazing. I have yet to try another type.. I guess it'll be a while. Just got a semogue 830 and some Paroso sensitive cream to try out too....

    I tried a lot of blades. Only except Feather. There are several packages (even there are old, 1980’s made packs). But they are so "advertised" that they are super-sharp, I’m even afraid to try them now)))

  • @whaleseatkrill
    @whaleseatkrill 10 лет назад +2

    I have been looking forward to this blade comparison. I found it very helpful and informative and as a follow-on have a couple of questions for you. Would you say that the sharpest blade like the feather although more expensive than a laser is better value? I can achieve 5+ shaves from a single Feather blade whereas the laser is only good for 1 or 2 then it tugs and skips on the beard. It also seems to me that the use of a platinum coating makes the blade sharper than a stainless, again the more shaves the greater the blade costs. For tough beards or heavy growth the cheaper blades are a nightmare and that’s when I end up having to staunch the bleeding. I very rarely cut myself with a sharp blade. Finally where can I obtain those non-branded Persona type blades, they seem to be the ideal price/value/sharpness weapon of choice? Thanks again Paul, in the art of shaving you are fast becoming one of the masters.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  10 лет назад

      Thanks Bob, I would say, for a heavy/tough beard, your better spending more money on a Feather etc..as it will last longer, and give more of a comfortable shave..if someone has a soft beard growth, they will probably get away with using the cheaper blades..but to get an honest answer..is to actually try the blades themselves. The unbranded normally are in some of the Savers shops in the UK..and some pound shops..all the best..Paul.

    Like your vids mate. A few months ago l brought a Ming Shi (Merkel Futur clone) for about £5. just to see, Actually l think its a great bit of engineering . But it also came with 5 free Ming Shi blades, These were put in the blade pile probably never to use but the other day l used one for a laugh. I thought it was great .Sharp smooth and lasted a long time ,But l cant see them for sale anywhere. As you say its all personnel taste, but its great to learn new things. and over many years l am still learning.

    for me i've only tried (in order of which ones i like)- 1) derby 2) astra 3) shark 4) persona. derby-sharpest of the blades i like and performs good in cutting my thick stubble can leave lots of little nicks if i don't use any kind of shave prep and razor bumps if i do use shave prep lol (oxymoron). astra-super sharp also and feels like i'm shaving with a gillette fusion razor but rust way quicker than a derby does and doesn't really do as good a job at cutting my thick stubble BUT doesn't leave nicks or razor burn. shark-similar to astra and derby for me. persona-ok but not anywhere near as good for me as the other 3 blades i've mentioned. hopefully in the future i can try the feathers and other blades and update this comment! have a good xmas and new years everyone!

    Paul, you are very brave for giving your opinion on blades. It seems most people disagree no matter what a person's favorite blade is. I say I always appreciate hearing what people like and if a person doesn't like that blade then it just doesn't work for them.
    You should add to your comments that not only the razor but I think more importantly is the cream or soap. If it has awesome slickness or not will make that blade a winner or a painful loser. :-)

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  9 лет назад

      markmongo44 Thanks, I do try to make it clear that what I say about any products I use, are of course my own opinion, as you say, everyone has different opinions and indeed needs from there products...which may work for me me, but not for them...I do also try to give a honest opinion of the lather, slickness etc...in my shaving videos, this video is quite old now....many thanks...Paul.

I myself have a little growth and want to try a feather as d2 as a next DE razor, which is supposed to be a very mild razor. • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 4 года назад +1

      The general consensus is that kai blades are thicker than feather blades. This seems to make them a little smoother and much more long lived. The major complaint about feathers is that they are extremely sharp on first use, and after that are just sharp. This means that the technique needs to be adjusted between first use and subsequent uses.
      I have not heard this criticism of kai blades.

    A lot of people hype about feather but I find them awful! I've tried personna feather Derby and just ordered some Gillette blues when I first started all this DE shaving I had no idea just how much difference blades really make its such a personal thing :-)

    I am about to receive my EJ DE89 with Derby, Astra Platinum and Personna red platinum blades. Which one do you suggest I try with my first ever safety razor shave? I have very sensitive skin, especially around my neck. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  10 лет назад

      Maybe try the Astra first, but a tip for sensitive skin, maybe try some shaving oil on your neck area as well as the lather, massage oil in first then add the lather and shave as normal, plus no pressure at all on the razor, just guide it..hope you enjoy your first DE shave...all the best.. Paul.

    Out of curiosity, why did you decide to include the _unbranded_ blades? It seems to me that they couldn't possibly be of any interest to anyone, since nobody could get them with any assurance they have the same ones you do.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  8 лет назад +1

      I shown them because they are part of my blade collection, and most non branded blades are made by Personna anyway......thanks...Paul.

    Having thick stubble using a Gillette rubi razor. I find Gillette rubi blades to the sharpest follow closely by super Max blue diamond titanium, which last much longer. lastly Wilkinson sword blades struggle to cut my stubble and don't last more than two shaves.

      It's nice when you find blades that work for you, as I find my "go to" blades always work for me too..also of course finding blades which don't work so well....some good choices you use....thanks..Paul.

      Hi, welcome to the wet shaving community.....I would suggest buying a multi blade sample pack, which will give you many brands to try then, you will find which blades work best for you and your razor, what feels good, and what doesn't. Also try shaving with no pressure on the razor at all, hope this helps you....thanks....Paul.

    Hey Paul great video. which way would be the best to try out a bunch of sample blades. Should I shave once with each or should I have twice with each sample blade? thanks.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  10 лет назад

      Giovanni Messina Thanks, I would shave at least twice, it will give you a better idea how it feels and shaves, then when you move on to the next blade, you will have a good idea of how each one feels and shaves, and even which one works best in which razor ( if you have more than one razor)..then you will know which blade you prefer.. hope this helps..all the best and good luck...Paul.

      Hey Paul thanks for tip. I have been using a few samples so far. The problem that I have is I seem to nick myself all the time no matter what brand DE blade that I use. I think its because when I used to shave with a mutli blade razor always shaved against the grain no matter what. This seems like the only way I can get the BSS. Is there a better way to get that type of shave without all always having to go against the grain or am I stuck with it.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  10 лет назад

      Giovanni Messina Do you shave just against the grain?..That could give you nicks, as the razor may tug against the beard growth, with these razors I would try shaving three passes, first shave with the beard growth, then across the beard growth and last against the beard growth, lathering between passes..it should help...hope this helps..Paul.

    • @GiosSimCorner
      @GiosSimCorner 10 лет назад

      I do go with the 3 pass shave with only going against the grain on my 2nd pass on my neck. I try going go from ear to nose or vice versa but I don't seem to get the close shave. my beard is very coarse. What blade would you recommend for an EJ DE89. I got a sampler and so far I have tried the Gillette 7O'clock and the Gillette Blues.

      You could try the Feather blade? Very sharp blade..especially with thick/coarse beards, maybe worth a try...Paul.

By the way, I don't know if you have ever viewed Busta's video, however, he was reviewing a Derby blade and he commented about you pronouncing it DAARBY. It of course was done with great love. Cheers, if you are ever in Vegas, look me up and we'll have a pint. Don't worry... I'm not a poof.

    Wow, you aren't lying about blades being subjective. To me, the 7 o'clock super stainless is much sharper than the Derby blades. Derby blades just slide over my hair like there not even there.

    Hello Paul,
    I have been using Personna DE blades (made in the US) in my Edwin Jagger DE89 (made in the UK). Here's the link to the blades sold on Amazon (amzn.to/1fgkskj). These appear to be different than the Personna blades in your video. Have you tried the US version? If so, how do they compare to the one's you show here? Do you know where the Personna Platinum blades are made?
    Being new to DE shaving, what differentiates a sharp blade from one that is not as sharp? How would I tell the difference? I've only used Derby and the Personna's.
    I love your videos. Keep up the good work.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  10 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment, it can get confusing sometimes with blades...as they are made in so many different countries, the Personna Stainless is made in the U.S.A...but the Personna platinum are not stated, so I take it they are made in the U.S.A also..it normally says on the blade itself ( but not in this case)..as for blade sharpness, you get an idea from different videos on people using them, but really the only way of seeing which blades you find sharp etc..are by trying different ones, the Feather blades are known for there sharpness, also any Japanese blades I find..because I feel when your classing a blade into it's sharpness, it depends on your beard growth, thick, coarse etc..so a blade someone else finds very sharp, may not be to you..( hope this makes sense) I see you have used two different blades in your shaves, so you will know which one of those is sharper than the other?..so it's a case of just trying other brands too, which will broaden your thoughts on them. All the best...Paul.

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 4 года назад

      @@mrsrhardy As I understand it, reds and blues are made in Israel. Israeli blues are virtually identical to USA blues. Reds are sharper. To confuse matters, Israeli reds are packaged in Mexico in tucks of 5 in a red box; and in the UK for the EU in tucks of 10 blades , plastic box, blue label... but they are reds. Confused yet?
