The Treet blades tend to be very good value for money. Over here in Thailand we can get 200 Treet Platinum for about $7.
The thing that really surprised me about this video is how different your impression of the Bic blade was. I, and everyone I know, find the Bic Chrome Platinum to be very sharp indeed. That just goes to show that it is a case of horses for courses.

@randelrobbins1408 Bics are in my top 6. I do enjoy them, and they are in my regular rotation.
Blade ratings are 100% subjective. People who enjoy a specific kind of blade share other common blades with like-minded people. I'm curious: what is in your top 6?

I really like the BICs, and I think their distinctive feature is their ability to provide a surprizingly close shave just on the first with the grain pass. They may have a "sandy" feeling on the face on the first shave, but I elimibate that by palm stropping the blade before use. I know that there are many sharper and smoother blades but I started wet shaving with this blade about 5 years ago and since then it has been my main blade. It might seem weird but this background story associated with material objects that I own constitutes part of their value for me, not just their performance at the moment of their use.

I concur with trying multiple blades until you find what is right for you. I’ve probably tried 20. My recent favorite and leader in the clubhouse are Personna Comfort Coated made in the USA. Still have a couple more to try though. I was pleased to find a great blade made right here in the states. Great video as always

I just found your channel today and I'm very excited I did. I've had my grandfather's old straight razor for decades and just kept it as a memento since I was too afraid to use it. After watching several demo videos, including yours, I'm going to give it a shot. Can't wait to try some of your products.
I just tried the razor on my arm hair and it's still darn sharp!

I tried over 20 brands when I was looking for my go-to blades. I use the PAA Cube pre-shave… Proraso tube cream…T3 brush….Nivea post shave balm…and Rockwell T2, 6C, and 6S razors. After my sample trials…I’ve settled on four blades…Feather…Nacet..Astra Green…and Voskhod. Encourage guys starting out…to use sample packs…and keep a log to rate each blade. After this exercise…you will have 3 or 4 to stick with…and have confidence in them.

One thing I get from your Part 1 and Part 2 reviews is there are many blade brands that work for you. Lots of 4s. But still no Gillette Nacet was included. That's my favorite...followed by the Astra Green and Wilkinson Sword from India. Maybe the WS India and the Nacet could be included in Part 3. Another informative blade comparison. I also like the Personna Lab Blue. But they aren't worth double (or more) the price of my favorites.

Treet carbon is one of my favorite blades in the Ambassador. I like it better than Perma-Sharp and Personna in the Rex. Not very durable compared to stainless though. 1 and done.
Seeing your experience with some vintage blades shows why most people only did a 1 pass WTG shave back in the day.

Thanks for both your blade review videos, Matt! I think your perceptions are bang-on. I have certainly found Feather to be a great blade, although there are blades like Astra (both Green and Blue) that are almost as good, and much better value for the money. I was also extremely impressed with the Treet carbon steel, which I tried for the first time last month. I went a full week between each shave, and the Treet still lasted for five shaves. I used the Parker Variant, and each shave I upped the dial just a bit --my first shave was on 3 for the first pass, and 2 for the second, while five weeks later I had it up to 5+/4 (and usually a 2-3 for a third pass on my neck). All very smooth and no tugging, even on the fifth shave. Very impressive!

Three words for you, Treat Yo Self...
I haven't tried Treet blades yet but now I want to just so I can say this every time I do.
I have mostly vintage blades and most times they do tug and pull a lot but they don't nick or cut me and give me a good shave my 47 blue blades where the worst feeling but left my face feeling fresh afterwards. Schick Krona Blades are the best vintage blades I have the Super Chromium, Stainless Steel Krona & Schick Plus Platinum are all great vintage blades.
Will also have to get in on that Barbershop Soap and Aftershave I'm working with Rex Supply Co 1955 Old World Tallow and Phoenix Artisan Accouterments King R Emporium Formula CK-6 & Kokum Butter Shave Soaps from Razor Emporium. All are great but the 1955 is my favorite lathers great and the smell is amazing.

    Matt,
I shave daily with a Fatboy you restored but, have a number of other Gillette and Shick razors including my first razor a Gillette Ambassador. I first tried a sampler pack and found I had a lot of blades fit only for dry shaving Fidel Castro.
That said, why not make up sampler packs that have 5 or 10 individual blades. No remorse that way and you can move on. I’m down to the end of a pack of Gillette Plainums now. They are great for up to 4 shaves.
I’m thinking that Med Labs are worth a try.
I’m now 71 and trust me, as your face ages (changes) so changes how your shave goes and feels afterwards.
The good thing is, I’ve not had an ingrown in years.

Most Treet blades are made from carbon steel (beside the platinum) but some have a "stainless" coating on them. I really enjoy them in my Gillette Adjustables, especially the classic. But they are a one or two shaves and done kind of blade.
For me the current production Astra superior platinum are great (again). The production run around 2020 was awful. But 2021 and newer are really sharp and smooth blades. Only blade that will last for six great shaves with my thick beard. But they are kind of over looked by us wet shavers because they are so popular.
And in the winter time the Wilkinson Sword because they are smoother 😅👍🏼

I agree with you that Feather Blades irritate my skin as a near-daily shaver and I don’t like them for me. I find Nacet or Astra Blue for example “sharp enough” and WAY more comfortable to shave every day or even every-other day. I am “convinced” that the Feathers in addition to being very sharp are also wider or deeper than the Gillettes out of St. Petersburg and therefore have more blade exposure and thus are more aggressive and harsh. Blade exposure is known to be even more vital in this respect than blade gap per se. One of the reasons I believe that Rockwell 6S is so beloved is that its blade exposure is so modest.

These head-to-head blade comparisons are great! Some of my favorite blades include Treet Black Beauties, the Persona and Wilkinson Sword (both from Solingen Germany), Gillette Platinum, Voskhod, Rapira (several types), and the Bic Chrome Platinum. For me, the Bic blades perform similarly to the Gillette Platinum, but this is very subjective due to pre-shave routine, razor, skin-type, beard-type, etc. Like Matt, I've been using the Razor Emporium pre-shave soap, which is a great product with a mild scent, so it doesn't overpower the scent of your shaving soap.

Astra blades are very popular. They are manufactured in St Petersburg Russia, along with Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette Platinum, Permasharp, Nacet, and Wizamet Super Iridium. The factory which used to manufacture Astra blades in the Czech Republic now makes Tatra and Tiger blades.

I'm really surprised you didn't like the Bic more than you did. I find it to be quite sharp and smooth.
Lots of people love the Treet Carbon Steel in Gillette Adjustables. I tried them in a Fatboy and a Slim and really wasn't impressed. I still have a few so I guess I'll try it in a three piece razor at some point.
I'm with you on the Feathers. They are sharp but they are rough. I say they're sharp like a Ginsu knife.
To me, Dorco blades share that roughness with a duller edge.
You should definitely try the stainless blades from Czech Blades, Tiger or Tatra Superior and Platinum. It is my understanding that Tiger and Tatra are the same blades with different names. Superior have PTFE and the Platinums have platinum, chrome, and PTFE.

Thanks for the video! Interesting to see what you like about the blades. Haven't tried so many blades but my favorites are so far treet back carbon, Shark super stainless and bic seem very nice too but abit sharp er and I got sensitive skin so I try to shave with a less sharp edge to spare the skin irritation.

  • @keithosmond5730
    @keithosmond5730 Год назад +2

Surprised by a couple of the results. I find the Bic quite sharp, whereas the Treet carbons are less so - and quickly lose their edge. Those Treets are good for a maximum of two shaves for me, whereas I get four from most (and up to six from some).
I've heard from some that the Dorco 300 (blue) and 301 (red) are the same except for packaging (red in plastic and blue in boxboard) whereas others say the reds are sharper. So your findings are interesting. The ones you need to try, though, are the Dorco Primes. I don't know how they compare to the 301s but they are much sharper than the 300s and one of the sharper blades I've tried. Currently one of my favourites.

I've found that the carbon steel treet blades are one of the few that respond well to palm stropping. I typically get 5 great shaves + 5 decent shaves out of one blade. That's with stropping, I've never pushed it past that because de blades are cheap after all.

I agree that you would usually need to try a razor for as many shaves as you would use your current favorite. It does kind of seem like though you can quickly weed out the truly terrible blades.

Great video. Two blades that I haven't even heard of, and they came out tops in your comparison test. Personna Med Preps and Treet. I do like the Feather blades, and since I have recently started using the Leaf Thorn razor, which I absolutely love, I also like their Leaf blades. I would love to see you compare the Leaf blades to the Feather along with the top two in your comparison test using the Thorn single blade razor. Of course, all you need to do is snap the DE blades in half in order to do the comparison. Is this a possibility for you? Much thanks.

I just started using a shavette a couple of shaves ago, my first experience even using Dorco blades is that I got better results than cartridge razors.
However, I am feeling the Dorco blades do not give me the cleanest shave and I might consider getting new blades.

I can really confirm that carbon steel blades are softer than stainless. The first shave with Treet is good, not Astra or Gillette platinum good, but quite good. The second shave feels a bit more tuggy, but still good enough, the third shave though... It's just awful, while other blades last an extra shave before getting tuggy. Maybe that's just my razor that doesn't work well with them, but what i get from them is that they are good for a single use blade, not so much for more than one or two shaves.
I also missed some Shark brand blades.

Reading the comments (and observing the “likes” on them) is a bizarre experience. It’s amazing how some blokes swear by blades I have used and think are terrible (Treet Carbon black is a case in point). I’m a daily shaver, so maybe my needs are different to those who shave every 3 or 4 days. Given the enormous range of opinions on this subject, it’s probably a waste of time to give my preferences - but for whoever is interested, my 4 favourites are Wizamet, Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon Pack, Feather and Gillette Nacet. All of them are better after the first shave (I get a total of 4 shaves from each blade - so shaves #2 to #4 tend to be a little smoother than shave #1). Cheers. 👍🪒

Another great video, Matt! I, for one, have been testing blades for the past 8-10 months since I've gotten acclimated to DE shaving, and I've gone through SO MANY BLADES and am narrowing down my favorites. But I had to go through sooooo many to get to where I am now...and thanks to this video, I just picked up a few more: Treet Carbon Steel, BIC Chrome Platinum, and some Gillette Minora blades. Out of my testing of blades over this long time, I'm down to three major favorites -- Rapira Platinum Lux, Dorco Stainless Red, Perma-Sharp -- and others that I have to test out more that have sort of "made the cut," but are still TBD: Wizamet Super Iridium, Dorco Prime Platinum, Astra Superior Stainless (Blue), and Personna Platinum (Red).

Thanks Matt💈🪒👍Great comparison! Med Prep blades are great as well as regular Personna Blues, mine came in two distinct packages labeled for each. Alas one of my most favorite blades, Israeli Red Personna blades are no longer made in Israel but now mfg in Germany and not nearly as good, bummer. Anyway, subjective to say what's good except for what I use, so it doesn't matter😉 Great video.
