I had a Nokton SC and replaced it by an Ultron. I found the Nokton images too "mushy" for my taste, and it also has quite noticeable distortion. On the positive side, I did like the warmish colour of the SC version. I kept my C.Skopar which is really good at 5.6 to 8 (and mostly good enough at all other stops). For "character" in f35 I am happy with a Jupiter-12 and a Canon f2.8 (black focus ring). For years I have been looking for a Summaron but never found one with clear glas (on critical inspection) at a reasonable price. Now the few clean specimens there are seem to have become collector's items.
Hey Matt✌ The vidoe looks great👌I've been waiting for that too. I have the same combo but version IV of the Summicron, today I had the 1.4 35 S.C on the M3 in the surf park near me, the largest surf park in Europe, it was only opened in August😉 so with small cutlery of the M3 and the Leica II on the way. So I have both and like to use them, and sharpness is not necessarily relevant for me great video, thanks for creating it. Happy new year to you and your family👌 Lg Anderl
I mainly shoot street and landscape and have both the Ultron f2 and the Summicron v3. Which one I select depends on the look I’m hoping for that day. Film is almost always the Ultron unless I need great flair. Digital is almost always the Summicron v3, unless something has to be brutal sharp. So, i guess my answer is, it depends..
Nice video Matt! As you might guess, I like the Nokton. 🙂 As a M9 user I like the extra light of f1.4. Bokeh is great, colors are ok. Size/performance is awesome.
Never really looked into the voigtlander before but this is a pretty good sales pitch for the Nokton! They should offer morę lenses with this single coated look.
I own the summicron asph and a zeiss biogon 2.8. I love both. The Leica is a good all rounder. The biogon has a beautiful pop. I’d love to own the FLE some day.
once again a nice a video thank you. I actually own both lenses and use them about the same, just depending upon what I am shooting to be honest. cheers!
very good comparison ... but I prefer 35mm Ultron f2 and Simera Thypoc 35mm f1.4 if I need the extra stop ...but I then I have the extra size and extra weigth 😞 so Ultron is my fav !
ok but if you have a 28 and 50 do you need a 35? same question about the 75 if you have a 50 and 90... or a 28 if you have a 21 or vice versa... or a 135 at all... do you find yourself swapping between these focal lengths in the field? i've had all of them but found myself just using 28, 50 and 90
I have the mc version of the Voigtlander which I bought second hand. It is affordable and very competent. Because I mainy shoot street on film, I would like to look into the Zeiss C Biogon 35mm 2.8. The analogue photos I saw are sharp but not too clinical. It is small, light and is perfect on my M2 to walk around with. Do you think there are enough differences between the Zeiss and Voigtlander to justify buying another 35mm lens? Is there a thing called the "Zeiss Look"?
@@chenyang5448 I have the Zeiss 35mm 2.8. Beautiful rendering. It has a nice pop and has character. To me, looks good for both people and places. The only downside is the 2.8.
I’ve been using the Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4 ZM and I am blown away EVERY time. Previously I shot with the Voigt Ultron 35mm f2 and loved it too for a year or so but the - dare I say it - cinematic rendering of the Zeiss is above even the Leica 1.4 FLE which (to my mind and eye) beat it. But then I prefer how Zeiss corrects scenes. For the Leica glow, you’re right, go Leica. I’m sticking with the Zeiss. Oh, shooting M10, btw.
The Distagon 35/1.4 ZM from 2006 still is better, than anything with 35mm F1.4, Leica does have to offer - still into 2025. Especially 3D Pop & microcontrast. Shooting Zeiss since the late 80s, but i don't own this Distagon.
I have too many 35mm lenses 🙂 - a Zeiss Biogon f2, Voigtlander Ultron f1.7, Nokton f1.4 MC, Color-Skopar f2.5 and a Summaron f3.5 in LTM. I can find a reason to use each of them and use a glimmer glass on the Zeiss when I want less cutting sharp with the M10 and straight up with film on my M2 or CL. Perhaps I should consider a Cron as a do-it-all 😉
Well, no surprise, another well done review. ;o) I have the MC Nokton and it is good but a bit too sharp on the M9. I like the CV 35 f/1.7 a bit better, softer images and more glow. Perhaps it has something to do with coatings. I do not know. But you always have good reviews and plenty of food for thought. Thanks.
Why the SC version, Matt? The MC is much better, in terms of lens flares. And the Cron is multicoated for real, also F2. No offense - but a interesting review would be the Voigtlaender Ultron 35 F2 vs. the Cron 35 F2, and here, things are good for the Ultron. I don't own it, but i will someday... i am fine with my Voigtlaender Heliar 40/2.8 currently, way happy with that little gem.
There’s not much difference between SC and MC it seems and I just used what I had access too. I know my Ultron is sharper so that’s better for film. Maybe I’ll recap that in a future video.
I've owned/tried most of these lenses you mentioned in the video and the Ultron f2 is my fav. It is such an amazing value. So small, well-built and sharp.

I use the Nokton MC and am very happy with it.
Nice! Yes I used one for years and was happy
A comparison between the Nokton and Summilux 35mm F1.4 v2 pre asph would be interesting as I understand the Nokton is based on that lens.
Yes agreed, I think the same!
I have the SC Nokton and love it. Thanks for the comparison.
Nice! I particularly liked the warm flare look

Spot on! That’s exactly how I will use these 2 lenses.
Nice video Matt! As you might guess, I like the Nokton. 🙂 As a M9 user I like the extra light of f1.4. Bokeh is great, colors are ok. Size/performance is awesome.
Thanks for the lens loan Tobi, yes 1.4 is better for M9 and film users . Love the size!
Never really looked into the voigtlander before but this is a pretty good sales pitch for the Nokton! They should offer morę lenses with this single coated look.
Thanks Thomas! Yes the SC coating gives a nice filmic / lower contrast look for sure.
I still love my 1st gen Ultron 35mm 1.7 LTM. An amazing lens!
Nice! Yes a different optical formula to the 1.7 M I mention so it's own character.
Did you say prehistorical lenses? Or maybe pre-aspherical?
Haha pre-ASPH*
I own the summicron asph and a zeiss biogon 2.8. I love both. The Leica is a good all rounder. The biogon has a beautiful pop. I’d love to own the FLE some day.
Nice! Yes Zeiss glass has more pop.
once again a nice a video thank you. I actually own both lenses and use them about the same, just depending upon what I am shooting to be honest. cheers!
Thanks, great, yes the SC impressed me being close in some areas to the Cron
very good comparison ... but I prefer 35mm Ultron f2 and Simera Thypoc 35mm f1.4 if I need the extra stop ...but I then I have the extra size and extra weigth 😞 so Ultron is my fav !
Thanks Grom, yes Thypoch are good but bigger!
VM 35mm Ultron f2 is my go-to lens, how is the new VM 35mm f1.5 Nokton ?
Nice. I wasn’t blown away by the 1.5 so I skipped that one.
My 35mm Summicron V2 (Canada) is threaded for filters.
Bought it about 30yrs ago from Sherry Krauter in NY.
Interesting thanks! Leica have so many off record variants it seems.
ok but if you have a 28 and 50 do you need a 35? same question about the 75 if you have a 50 and 90... or a 28 if you have a 21 or vice versa... or a 135 at all... do you find yourself swapping between these focal lengths in the field? i've had all of them but found myself just using 28, 50 and 90
Yes just carry the combo you need for that trip/ day. If 2 lenses I do 28/50, if 1 often a 35
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I have the Voigtlander 21mm f4 Color-Skopar and the 40mm Nockton Classic which are a nice small two lens 'walkabout' combo.
I’m a big fan of Zeiss 35mm Biogon F2. It’s got a bit of that classic glow at F2 but then turns into a modern zeiss at 2.8 onwards. :-)
Thanks Greg! That’s still on my to review list

I still want to try the Zeiss as they are normally impressive yes but from what you describe the Ultron would tick your boxes and smaller.

I love my Leica Summilux M 35mm FLE a lot! My favourite Lens for M cameras. But I can understand that not everybody can afford one.
Very nice, great in low light too

Sorry Matt but a F1.4 is not the same as a F2 lens 😊
"surprisingly similar"
@davidellinsworth3299 sure 🤣😜
Yes it’s just a video I’ve promised for ages so I was glad to tick it off. Both are a similar size and both popular.
