I'm not a "deadhead", so I didn't know that Elvis Costello had jammed with Jerry. The pairing sounded exquisite to me, but then I listened and enjoyed it. And reflected, hey, both of these artists had/have a love for country music, so it works!
I remember listening to a radio interview with Jerry in about 1978. They asked him about which New Wave artists of that time would last, and the first name that came to him was Elvis Costello.
When I was 14 I went to my first concert with my brother and it was Elvis Costello and the Attractions at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Fast forward 30 years and I'm a deadhead playing, among other things, lots of dead songs in a band. This video ties the two ends together for me. Thanks!
Sorry, Malcolm, but that's a Jazzmaster. It doesn't have Jaguar pickups or the Jaguar selector switches. Doesn't look like it's the shorter Jaguar neck either.
Holy frijoles! I've had them swapped in my mind -- since the '60s! How the heck does that happen? Thanks for setting me straight after all these years.
Elvis Costello was always a bit of a Dead-Head EC Hero-Worshipped Jerry Garcia in a big way. The chance to play with him was a "dream come true" for Mr. Costello.
ImetCostello’s mother backstage at a Bridge Concert at Shoreline. I was introduced to his mother and when she found that I worked for the Grateful Dead she got excited and said that “Elvis loves the Grateful Dead...when Pigpen died Elvis put a black bordered picture of Pigpen on the refrigerator door.” During a solo tour/slide show Costello had a running joke when a photo of a skeleton popped up he would say, “I’d like to play a Grateful Dead song!” And then play one of his songs instead. This happened at every concert until he played in San Jose. When he got to the skeleton photo, he actually played “It Must Have Been The Roses->Ship Of Fools->It Must Have Been Roses.”
Is that JB onstage? Lord, mothers keep your Telecasters close! JB doesn’t know licks, he invented most of them! Even Garcia went to school some nights.
Elvis Costello actually had his name placed on the fretboard, which overshadowed the fret markers, so apparently Jerry had a hard time getting a hang of the guitar.
Now if you're tired and a bit run down can't seem to get your feet off the ground maybe you oughta try a little bit of LSD. Shake your head and rattle your brain maybe act just a bit insane. Give your psychic energy to me Eat flowers and kiss babies..L.....S.....D. For you and me. Wow, I don't think I've heard this stuff since 1970.
It amazes me how Jerry's playing is like a voice. I can identify it any time I hear it even if I have never heard the track before. I still miss him.
Totally!!!
He’s groovy
I still cry sometimes
@@keithshaw6725 👍When I hear Stella Blue.
@@FunnyHaHa420 Best all-time Stella was Cleveland Coliseum. A few years ago
I love that Jerry is playing Elvis's guitar and full rig - but he still sounds just like himself. Beautiful.
James Burton was like "Jerry, hold my beer". Incredible.

Jerry is playing Elvis Costello’s guitar!
That's the best that particular Jazzmaster ever sounded -- I bet it never wanted to leave Jerry's hands.
How can anyone hate this?
So well done on this old country hit!!! Leanne
Hank Williams may be the best song writer of all time. Excellent cover! RIP Jerry.

I agree! Nobody is 100%, 100% of the time. We all have made the worst of it,even on our best days.
What a fun pairing! prefer Jerry's vocal though...but nice for a change.
Where is Jerry Lee when you need him?
NICE!!!
@DoctorSapperstein Hey "Doc" -- EC's vintage Fender Jazzmaster TM is hardly a 'shit' guitar. I wouldn't exactly use one as a doorstop.
james and jerry sure shared some grateful juice before this jam
"Costello and this bunch of people are no match to jam with Jerry Garcia."
Yeah, that James guy, who'd he ever play with I wonder.
PSYCHE!!!!

@e4hookah Elvis has done some fine work but I have to agree. He has slaughtered this song.
Surely you're joking?
There's Elvis Costello dressed as a priest!
