Clarus dropping "in this economy?!?" In random places once per video is actually pretty funny the longer it goes on
Don't encourage her...
I laughed, god help me
Like when I answer to doing anything with, "With _my_ back?!"
It's only funny to me, though. Lol
It shouldn't be funny but it gets me every time
Just like Sigourney saying "for free ??" for those who get it 💅😂
FUN FACT:
The actor who played Kathleen's main henchman, Perry ( Jeffrey Pierce ) in tonight's episode voiced Tommy in the video game.
So Joel is in the same city as Tommy is in right now but just doesn't know it. lol 😂
Kathleen is one of the girls from the Peter Jackson movie Heavenly Creatures.
I gotta say, he is one of the most badass/dependable looking dude I've ever seen
lol when i was watching the ep i was like "damn he sounds like tommy" not knowing it was the actual voice actor
@@xencmo4346the actress is currently starring In Yellowjacket
When Joel hits the car into the building and he frantically asks Ellie if she's hurt anywhere. He's thinking of Sarah. When the car accident broke her ankle.
You can see him thinking, "omfg I finally started caring about someone and the same thing is gonna happen again..."
"YOU HAVEN'T EVEN HEARD THE PUNCHLINE," he yelled, over the punchline
Clarus needs to find more ways to drop "not in this economy" in more videos.
You guys have become one of my favorite reacts channels because you guys really show the emotion of these episodes without shame. I relate to them very much. I also love the love between you two.
I presume Joel's far too aware that others could be around and come out of nowhere so you would still be wanting to check your mirrors to make sure you're alone.
You have to forgive a Canadian for not knowing a coffee chain outside of Tim Hortons. They are almost two feet apart up here. Not much room left to put a Starbucks.
The "you're not funny" "yes I am, you're laughing " is a conversation that has happened in my household more than once!😂😂
They don't realize we are laughing at the ridiculousness of it! Lmao
2:53 Fun fact, that's actually not true. In reality we don't actually know why siphons work. It was thought for a long time that it was atmospheric pressure like you mentioned, until scientists found that siphons still work in a vacuum. Current prevalent theory iirc is that it has to do with gravity, and the liquid being "pulled" through the siphon acts like a chain with the leading bit of water pulling the bit behind it and so on and so forth
Well damn that is crazy. Thank you for the info!
Yeah I remember hearing something about that recently (the siphons in a vacuum bit), it's called the Mould Effect or colloquially the "chain fountain" when specifically referring to chains/linked bearings. Definitely one of those things where it's like "well it does this because I don't fucking know why".
Clarus "in this economy" is one of the best things lol
Starbucks was definitely a thing in the early 2000's for me. My mom would make a stop every morning and then drop me off at middle school and I would walk in with a caramel milk steamer and thought I was better than everyone LMAO
Definitely was a thing seeing as they started in 1971, had around 140 stores in the early 1990s and easily had 430+ stores in the early 2000s. Some reactors try to have unlimited knowledge lol. They also forget its a story and an adaptation.. the world didnt actually stop in 2003!! The inconsistencies OMG....🙄
@@de68a What does your last line have to do with anything....? If they made a reference to TikTok is that how you'd justify anachronisms, "the world didn't actually stop in 2003!!" ? Literally makes no fucking sense with your Googled information.
Yeah I graduated in 03 and that comment felt like a personal affront. We certainly had Starbucks then. Jeez.
But was it a hipster thing back then? A reason to feel you're better than others because you picked up a caramel milk steamer like you're middle-management at a big-wig Manhattan firm? Honest question, I think that was opop's point. Maybe Starbucks was always hipster crap, until hipster coffee shops stole their hipster thunder, perhaps.
I mean it's not like they invented coffee. The point is the presumption of being more sophisticated than everybody else, that's not something people associated with coffee shops, until perhaps Starbucks and later hipster joints, or maybe beatnik-wannabe coffee shops in the early 90's. I dunno.
Not to be a Shrek meme, but shrek 2 had the joke of two Starbucks on one street in 2004, so it must have been at least relevant in 2003
I've heard from toilet cleaners that public women's restrooms are way worse, because they tend to sort of "stand" on the toilet and then have the tendency to piss and shit all over it and the floor or even the walls because of it.
And Joel was obviously checking the mirror for… you guessed it… people. A working car loaded with cargo is big fat target. Humanizing the hunters is definitely not quite new though, as they've done this in Part 2 already, as it was quite important to the story as well. Ellie paralyzing the guy and then having to listen him beg and scream for his mom was rough though.
Yeah they clearly haven’t seen some of the filthier women’s rooms
My god I had actually blacked out the memory of Pedro Pascal being in WW 1984😂
Nah, that was Donald Trump.
So great to see Melanie lynsky having a moment getting some more serious roles of you guys haven’t watched yellow jackets I highly recommend she’s incredible in that and her performance might not even be the best one
yeah she's fucking great in yellowjackets.
i think it's funny when people are like "she doesn't seem like that type though", when her first role in film was as a murderer in a movie about a true crime that happened here in nz, and she was kinda unhinged.
@@ISavant Absolutely, she was great in Heavenly Creatures (1994).
"In this economy" is hilarious xD Do it more!!!
The guy with the beard is one of the voice actors from the game (Jeffrey Pierce aka Tommy)
He's crying about how hard it is for that guy to walk around with that thing between his legs
I’m excited that next episode is coming early!!!!!!! Ep 5 drops on Friday because of the superbowl!!
Omg is this true?!
@@Glo419 ye
Society doesn’t need to break down to see the worst. A charismatic leader can make people do some pretty awful things.
Pedro Pascal was Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones. He was also in the 2018 movie “Prospect.”
Ok but being sponsored by AdamandEve is both on brand and kind of awesome xD
Starbucks first big expansion came in the 90s after going public in 1992, so, yeah, they probably would have had several cafes in the Boston area by the early 2000s.
Fun fact, in Kansas, the Arkansas River is pronounced Ar-kansas, so Clarus would fit in if she visits.
i need you to know i actually laughed Out Loud to "bill was gay!" "WHAT?! in THIS economy?!", and i have the loudest, screechiest laugh, so the neighbours are definitely aware of how funny i found that joke lmao
I'm 43 I can remember starbucks being popular as far as 99/2000.
Checking rearview mirror: He's checking they haven't been seen/aren't being chased by raiders.
Starbucks has been around for quite a while. I was a young teacher in 2003 and we had plenty of Starbucks in DFW
I laughed, Clarus. I don't know what Nerdy's problem is.
Because she’s trying to watch the damn show and keeps getting interrupted 😂
I've come to realize the best description for this show and game series is "visceral" and this show is only making the game and universe better imo
I heard two people saying about Starbucks not being around since 2003, it opened in 30 March 1971, in Seattle, Washington
9:15 Ellie is learning much more around Joel than at FEDRA School.
19:25 She said: "No sign of them... you?" to which a perfectly valid answer is: "Yeah"! 😉
I’m from Boston and I can confirm …. In 2003 I lived in an abandoned Starbucks in that exact QZ
The women's bathrooms are definitely the worst. When I worked retail, there was ALWAYS a mess to clean up in the ladies' room. When we worked in office, my wife would tell me the horrors that she would walk into in the ladies' room. The puns are puntastic. Pretty sure I have that joke book, and my wife hates it. The scene where Ellie shoots the kids is so well done, just wow. Also, she risked hitting Joel with the angle she shot at. "We'll deal with it later..." trope...always bites you in the ass
I think it's down to the amount of kids a business attracts. Just what I've noticed over the years. 👍🙂
I'm pretty sure he's talking about sports stadiums, where 90%+ of the bathroom traffic can be in the men's bathroom and it all happens in bursts during breaks in play.
oh yeah the stories of used up tampons, pads, period blood in general
Women sometimes 'hover' because they don't want to sit on the seat, causing the issue they don't want to sit on the seat in the first place (piss on the seat).
Also clogged toilets because for some reason they flush tampons
That pun was the opposite of solid... I'll see myself out.
get that adam and eve bag yall happy for you!!
I agree with you, Nerdy. Nevermind the guns, the ammo, the food... SAVE THE COFFEE
So, Shrek 2 came out in 2004 and it had a joke about a Starbucks being destroyed and everyone inside running across the street to another Starbucks. So, I guess it was popular enough.
I like all of your videos, but I specifically liked this one for Clarus's 'in this economy' joke. Because it was perfect.
“In this economy?” I love it
A world without coffee is no world at all !
I feel like Joel might be looking in the rear view mirror during that monologue because he's ''looking back'', the entire monologue was about why you go on and in his mind it's family, which would be Tess which is now in the past
Starbucks was huge in the early aughts, especially in Boston.
There was a Simpsons gag in 1998 about all the stores in a mall turning into a Starbucks so it fits the time.
"What, you guys are married? I thought you were her gay best friend."
1. Humorous you actually quoted that.
2. I think it's on absolutely every sane person's relationship goals list, to find that person you can truly be blatantly yourself with.
Starbucks was founded in 1971 (before i was born, but i was a baby of the 70s) made a large expansion nationwide in the 1990s and was pretty much a USA/Canada staple before 1997.
As to navigating... they are using an atlas. It has at best 2 11x17 inch pages to represent each state. All the minor highways and definitely the county roads are not going to be easy to reference. Sure you can jump on state highway 94 40 miles from the city, but then you dont kniw where youre going and guessing which exits or roads will connect you back to the highway shown on the atlas. That coukd end up adding 300 miles to your trip, guessing. And then you're backtracking a lot, you don't have a source of fuel aside from other cars that *might* have gas. And you'll find a lot more cars on the majir highways than on the smaller roads. How'd you like to take a guess and then have a 20 mile hike back to your last known location? Im from the llains states (Missouri and Kansas are fairly close to where i live.) I can tell youbfrom firsthand experience, your vehicle shuts down in some places, theres not a house or a gas station within an hours walk in the real modern world. Think about a 3 day hike to find anything useful, and being without your vehicle after.
"You know who else is from Kansas?" Immediately my first thought was Dorothy 🤣🤣🤣🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Finally someone mentioned Narcos! Such a quality show, Pedro was outstanding in it
Bryan "f**k around and find out" Raider
Looking forward to the next installment of what made Nerdy cry. He's a good man.
fun fact, the bearded ''grunt'' that is with the militia/ambush group is the actual voice actor behind Tommy in the videogames!
In 2003 - I lived in Houston and there were 2 Starbucks on opposite corners of a busy intersection, so yeah, they were definitely popular then.
They were popular when I was in high school in the early 90s
Starbucks was founded in 1971, by 1980's started to grow and by early 1990's went public.. the rest is history
the show isnt set in 2003, its 2023. in last episode Bill's note was dated August 2023

I am NOT a gamer but I own a PS4 for just these 2 TLOU games, and though I have watched a lot of game play with my daughter and her friends growing up and also here on RUclips, this is the only game I know of that was created in such a way that you can tell Naughty Dog intended the player to feel remorse for killing many of the 'bad guys'. Many of the walkthroughs I prefer watching really don't like killing those they don't have to, especially the dogs. Most other games don't make you feel anything when you go on a killing spree. Kudos to Neil Druckmann and the others at Naughty Dog for that!
SPOILER ALERT!!! DON'T READ BEYOND THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW THE WHOLE STORY FROM THE GAMES!
Another thing they changed from the game is when Ellie tells Dina who was her first kill, it was the hunter that was about to kill Joel, but in this version she says that wasn't her first. The sad part is that I think we're going to find out her first kill was Riley after she finally turned. I could be wrong, but she was only bitten 3 weeks before she met Joel and Tess so to fit in this time frame that doesn't leave many people that she could have shot. Really heartbreaking if you think about it.
This part is not so much a spoiler but in the game version Ellie was reading a comic book in the back seat when she complained about the comic book she was reading was a 'To be continued' leaving it at a 'clif-hanger'. So what did the people at Naughty Dog and HBO do to us? Leave this episode off at a 'CLIF-HANGER!!!'
"in this economy?" is HILARIOUS!
The "guy in the beard" is Tommy from the game.
The thumbnail is so funnny I can’t stop laughing lol
Weird thing to get emotional about, but especially as it's hiv awareness week I can't think of a better sponsor 💜
Also excuse me being so late, I'm reliant on my sister for access to these episodes and that happens once or twice a week at best 😅
When my husband and I watched this episode, and Pedro Pascal mentioned Kansas City, I thought of the musical Oklahoma too 😄
bella ramsey was in game of thrones as well, she played lyanna
1:36 100% calling bullshit here (maybe it's exclusive to the stadiums though) as I've worked in enough retail locations to know that the women's restroom was also the worst one to clear. The amount of hair, tampons, pads, and straight up trash just strewn about everywhere with blood just left sitting on the toilet seats is just ridiculous. I'm not even going to mention the people that shit, somehow, on the wall because that's not mutually exclusive to men or women -- both do that inane shit for some reason. The most "cleaning" I've had to do that's exclusive to the men's room has been product trash because dudes steal more (or at least women take the evidence with them) and "graffiti" aka random ass middle school poems on the stalls. ("Here I sit broken hearted, tried to shit but only farted. The other day I took a chance, tried to fart and shit my pants.") Hands down women are the worst to clean after.
I usually instinctively like a video when I particularly enjoy a moment. For this video, that moment was when Clarus said, "in this economy" hahaha.
@Nerdy Nighty - Dude... You talked over/completely missed so many CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT and FAN FAVORITE moments in this episode... You´re way more focused on your own comments and thoughts, than in the stuff you watch. PAY. SOME. ATTENTION. MAN!! Or at least PRETEND to do so! xDxD
Having worked in the area of Boston that they set their QZ in that time period. There were already like 4 starbucks in a 5 block radius.
Starbucks was everywhere in 2003 lol. Even the 90s
Now I wonder how far north the fungus would be able to move before it became too cold for it. Would it only reach the border of Canada before it gave up and turned around or would it be able to move up to even artic regions and survive there?
If it’s housed in the perfectly warm body of a human then I think it would have no prob. But maybe not?

Hope id be safe here in Sweden lol
19:40 That Guy with the Beard is Game Tommy 😂
Tommyception
Superman was from Krypton, you're welcome for the air-drop of knowledge AYY-YOOOOO.
19:38 - That guy it's actually Tommy from the games.
The last episode had more to do with Joel's character than many realize. Even if you haven't seen him. Bill and Joel are both bitter and alone. However, the development of Bill clearly showed the differences, as one of them was willing to let a person into his life. As a result, despite the almost similar mindsets at the beginning, Bill got a long full and happy life. Joel, on the other hand, is stuck. So yes, the episode was important and not just because of the farewell letter at the end. It showed that there is hope, even if Joel doesn't have one yet.
This episode showed that people are important to be happy. We are usually herd animals.
As I understand it, Henry is responsible for Kathleen's brother death by betrayal. I guess he betrayed them because Fedra threatened Sam. I think Kathleen's brother was the leader of the resistance movement and she was probably the mom of the troops. That's the only reason I can imagine why the troupe follows her at all, so insecure and focused on revenge she seems. The bottom line is that she has absolutely understandable reasons. Just as good reasons as anyone else on the show and Joel wouldn't do anything else. Shows again that no group is good or bad.
The only criticism so far is really the lack of brutality shown by Joel, because that is very important. Firstly, Joel was brutal and ruthless and secondly, it makes Abby more comprehensible in her actions in TLOU part 2. Which is the whole point. It's not about killing a lot of people, it's about how he does it. I think it is a mistake not to show this in all its brutality. The show still has to improve and I hope it will be later. It just has to.
Btw... I still believe that Ellie pocketed the two grenades that fell at her feet when Tess had her heroic death. I think the bloater will get to eat them.
I mostly agree but lack of brutality?! In the first episode he punched someones face until it was mush and in this one is able to callously ignore someone's pleas for life and despatch them with their own knife. He's also admitted he's been on both sides of ambushes so Ellie knows how brutal he is when it comes to survival.
@@A-small-amount-of-peas It is not shown that is the problem. What Joel does so far or to what extent they are willing not to show it is out of all proportion to what will happen in part 2. But this is important, otherwise the other side will be portrayed disproportionately worse than Joel.
@@TomTomson81 you have to remember there is still 5 episodes to go, I can't really remember them showing much of how brutal Joel was when they left Lincoln in the game either, mostly self defence kills but before that it's mostly relying on stealth.
I think they've done a great job so far as if you go too graphic every episode you run the risk of losing a lot of the audience by making the show a little too dark
@@A-small-amount-of-peas I talked about brutality and not about justified self-defense. And you did have brutality early on in the game. Tess executes the arms dealer. Or the scene here in the store... Ellie is attacked and Joel rams the hunter's head so hard through the table that he dies. In addition, there are slit throats. All this was visible. What do they show here? A long-range shot and an off screen kill. Joel was portrayed by Robert as brutal and terrifying. Not much of it has really been seen so far. But as I said, I'm still hoping for it. So far, I believe in a stylistic decision because it's a series. And since it's a series, it has to improve to stay interesting. So I hope that the absolute explosion of Joel will come. That it gets really hard, the more important Ellie becomes for Joel. This should then also be presented accordingly.
@@TomTomson81 I disagree I think they've done a more than adequate enough job of that after episode 1. I've played the game multiple times and honestly him killing that soldier sticks in my head more than the examples you listed from the game . I did'nt think Joel was that twisted in the game until he has to interrogate people a bit later on.
Plus if they followed your advice they'd lose a lot of viewers fairly quickly, the world they've created is dark enough that it doesn't need one graphically brutal act from Joel every episode and they have plenty of time before TLOU 2 to add more. If you go too hard too fast then it kind of leaves you nowhere to go except more gruesome and that's not really necessary and will turn a lot of people off.
They have to walk such a tightrope to please game fans and new fans but also appeal to people who would never watch anything based on a zombie video game. I got my own mother to watch it by deliberately not saying its based on a zombie apocalypse video game as I knew that would turn her off, she also abhors bad language but once I got her to watch the opening scene she's been hooked ever since so for that I have to give it up to Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, they've managed to get people who wouldn't normally watch this type of show as regular viewers so my hat is off to them in terms of the job they've done so far in appealing to as wide of a demographic as possible
Any service employee can tell you that the worst bathrooms to clean are always the women's. Hovering is bad, ladies.
Yes Starbucks was popular in 2003, I was in college and we hung out there and played Uno while making our drinks last for hours.
Yes, Starbucks and other coffee chains being everywhere was already a punchline even in the 90s.
i can't speak for other areas, but having lived in MA my whole life, i can attest to the fact that Starbucks definitely existed in Boston and the surrounding areas in and around 2003.
I have been in the bathrooms at McMahon. Haven’t changed in 40 years.
So Starbucks got big before 2000. So much so Lewis Black had a stand up about two corner to corner Starbucks in Houston The End of the Universe is Lewis Black's second album, recorded at The Punchline in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, on two separate date ranges: August 24-26, 2001 and March 8-10, 2002,
I heard and saw Lewis Black while I was living in Pinehurst, NC.
I heard this familiar voice as he was talking on the phone and I was walking nearby. Passed him and thought to myself, "that was Lewis Effing Black...."
in all honesty, they should have taken exit 8B to merge onto I-435 to avoid downtown and go around the city. Probably got screwed by a crappy 2003 Mapquest printout.
I wondered about that, myself.
I mean, this chapter in the game is set in Pittsburgh, and that's a lot more geographically constrained than KC MO, so it makes sense, there.
Kansas City has so much open area around it, I'd think they could've easily found a way around, using state highways or even county roads.
It is only inconvenient until you want to spell your name in the snow.
"Yeah no or no yeah or yeah no yeah?" LMAO an everyday struggle!
Wait Clarus looks like Anya Taylor Joy.
I had the exact same look on my face at the end as Nerdy, if you played the game you know one of the best parts is coming up.
They’re puns. They’re not meant to be these absolutely hilarious jokes.

It depends on the canopy, I guess.
Starbucks was around in 2003. It started getting big in the 90s. Source: I graduated college in 2002 and it was around then.
Edit: In hindsight I was wrong. Starbucks did exist in 2003, but if any coffee purveyor is going to survive the apocalypse in *Boston* it's going to be Dunkin Donuts.

Starbucks was huge, even in 2003.
Starbucks became mega famous from the 90s. It rose outta Seattle with Grunge.

Starbucks est 1971 in Washington (the more you know) =P
19:00 I mean, David Boreanaz exists. Buffy, Angel, Bones, all excellent shows. And maybe Seal is a good show too, but I've never seen it so I dunno
10:40 - C is totally right here. No way Joel gets close to a city.
"I was 11 in 2003"...
Starbucks started to grow in 2003
Hm. That's an interesting point about Joel's hearing actually. Giving him a hearing issue when in the game, you obviously had the "listen mode". I wonder if that was intentional.
Perry is the voice actor of Tommy
The Starbucks line was pure product placement. It should have been Dunkies.
Thanks, Nerdy! Thanks, Clarus! 🌇 #NerdyNightly #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO
