It's spooky season, and that means it's time to cover one of my favourite games ever made, Silent Hill. This month, a Tool-Assisted Speedrun of Silent Hill that had been in the works for over a year is finally finished. In this video i go through what the TAS does to save time over a regular any% run, some of the issues Andyrion had to face when TASsing Silent Hill, as well as general gameplay trivia that you may be unfamiliar with. Enjoy as always
Special thanks to all the Silent Hill runners that helped me in making this video possible.
All music used in the video is from Silent Hill's original soundtrack.

🎃 Happy Halloween everybody! 🎃
Doing a video on this TAS has been on my bucketlist all the way back in March of this year. When i heard it was being released in late october, i really wanted to get it out on halloween night. The Silent Hill community were all so kind in helping make this video become a reality, so huge props to them. I apologize if the bit rate of the game kind of goes to shit when it gets really dark, youtube compresses the quality of this game really badly unfortunately. Hope you all enjoy regardless, and don't forget to try and guess the time of the TAS in the comments, see if you can nail it like i did 👀
Thanks again for being patient with me, the creation process is long and exhausting at times, but all worth it in the end.
- Ricky
Can't wait to watch it
I mod for andy and didn't even know about this vidya.
Can't wait to watch it all once I've got some free time.
Honestly would be pretty cool to see more TAS explanations outside of Halloween, for some other interesting TAS's
Found this channel recently so you might not reply to this, what's a Tool Assisted run? Could you explain
"Without the need for any jumpscares."
Me: "Wasn't there a jumpscare in the locker-"
*locker flies open*
"Except that one."
I noped the fuck out of SH1 as a kid after that. Couldn't handle any more of it.
I bust out laughing at that moment (in this video).
SCIENCE NERD HERE!!! The gold medallion would almost certainly NOT melt due to the chemicals poured on it. Gold comes from the group of metals including platinum, palladium, rhodium, and osmium, among a few others, These are called the "noble metals". One of the things that makes this group stand out is its lack of reactivity. Gold really likes just being gold, and doesnt want to form compunds with other elements and chemicals.
In terms of acid, in order to melt gold, you need a special mixture of Nitric and Hydrochloric acid. This is called Aqua Regia.
When gold is mined, mercury metal is used because it also likes to mix with gold and can be used to pull it out of ore. Mercury would do exactly diddly squat nothin' to a clenched zombiehand.
SO! unless you used a bottle of Aqua Regia, your gold metal would likely be totally fine. Youd just have to wipe off the hand goop.
Thanks science nerd
Why thank you science nerd!
That's so interesting, thank you!
Thank you atheist science nerd
Or its only gold plated medallion, just saying

Harry gives no two craps about anything going on, he has a mission and nothing will stop him.
"HAvE yOU sEEn A LiTTLe GiRL aRoUNd HeRE?!?!"
He was a real American badass.
what a gem. a whole documentary for free. as someone obsessed with the silent hill series, i love the idea of trying to speedrun it. definitely seems like one of those game series that would fight hard against speeding through it.
Carcinogen did it pretty well without tas
Nothing is free
They are way past trying to speedrun it.
This reminded me to sub, since yea your right this is high quality and free. I respect that
It definitely seems like the opposite, one of the rewards is obtained by beating it in under an hour and half (plus a bunch of other things)
Silent Hill: Ah a new victim to- What is he doing?
Harry going across town like he knows this place picking up every plot item: WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER!
*Monster:* "Muahaha I am the personification of yo-HEY WAIT WHERE ARE YOU GOING? COME BACK!!!"
@@RubberDucky757 funny but sh1 is the personification of alessa's suffering from her being burned almost to death
@@samsniper2000 "the personification of your adopted daughters past fears"?
Cos Cheryl is Alessa.
@@FFKonoko I assumed he was referring to the personification of harrys fears like how SH2 is the personification of James' guilt and fears, but also cheryl doesn't share memories with alessa as far as i'm aware
@@samsniper2000
From what I could collect of SH1 and 3, she does share some of those memories but has suppressed them also from what I can collect, her having some of those memories are a direct result of this game, but again, she suppressed them.
When I was 10 years old I kept turning the game off in frustration when the little stabby kid monsters killed me at the beginning. I kept thinking I’d missed a weapon 😆
Love that lmao, how old were you when you finally had the idea "wait, maybe this is scripted"?
I stopped playing for a long time when I reached the piano puzzle.
You are not the only one! I did as well. I kept getting sad lol.
@@Althalus2010probably figured it out after watching this vid 😏😂
Exactly what I needed this late halloween night - one of my favourite video games being torn into pieces and then narrated by Ricky
Harry sure didn't waste any time to get his daughter outta there.
Edit: It's really weird seeing a TAS speed through this game after I pretty much took all my time and made sure everything was dead lol
Who kills everything in a sh game do you know how hard that is to do in the first one
From otherworld school it’s a myth onwards
@@RUclipsdeletedmyoldhandle I did it when I was 9. The game seemed like it was endless. Took me almost a month to finish the normal school
probably wouldn't click this if it wasn't uploaded by you, but the amount of effort you put in really shows. You're like a David Attenborough calmly talking me through the game, making me excited about something I didn't know I was.
Honestly these are the type of comments that make me want to keep doing this
@I_Commission_DSPriscilla_Art Ty!
You have a wonderful rhythm and commentary style. Plus, it's really clear that you love Silent Hill and that made it all the more enjoyable to watch. Thank you for the excellent video!
Thank you! Yea this game is great, I think it helps that I played it recently as well
I got a special place in my heart for commentary videos on tas or speedruns. This one was no different, and was just as great as the others. Thank you for the video.
Something I always found so weirdly unnerving about the first silent hill was how wide the roads were. That plus the fog making you unable to even see the other side of the road, just made you feel so tiny and isolated, even in the middle of the town.
Can't wait for TAS guy to do a face reveal, with him dominating the competition in every game so much so that they gave him his own speedrunning scene.
(PS: Nice video!)
Tas isnt a normal person
Tas is Chuck Norris playing games first time blindfolded
@@Wolfenstein1942 only using his left hand
25:05 I recently played this game for the first time in PS3, and that 4th floor thing is probably my favorite moment in the game. The way it just suddenly appears after you check every other floor sent a chill down my spine.
It's even more chilling if you're Japanese, as the Japanese words for "four" and "death" are homophones.
@@Althalus2010 I never made that connection. This game just gets better and better.
10:27 Gold is pretty acid-resistant, still good job noticing that tho lol
These are much more entertaining when someone is giving a play by play.
Just watched this again and man I can't tell you how much I love your commentaries. I've been speedrunning since 2003 and have watched literally thousands of runs. Until now I mostly enjoyed AGDQ vods, but always wanted a more quiet explanation commentary of a more serious and direct nature. Vids like this are the cream of the crop imo, shoutout to Carcinogen's commentaries too!
Your narration in this one is perfect man. I really love the way you, for instance, preface the glitches coming up in some time, but then say "but for now, we got a bit to go until then.". When you narrate in the present tence like that, It really adds to the atmosphere and hooks the audience. I'm really a fan of your wording here. Dope!
"In the Café, we're going to be picking up the Fleshlight"
this TAS guy is pretty good
"Loud bang #2; the sequel is not as good as the first, we all know that". Is such an underrated line
Unless we’re talking about Terminator 1 and Terminator 2 😁
literally discovered you the other day, nearly watched your entire channel since XD honestly, the quality you put out brings most big channels to SHAME, also hospital music in this game actually terrified me....
I've been playing Silent Hill 1 sooo many times, that I never though about speedrun. This is my first time seeing a SH1 speedrun, and how you just manage to go through the school is just... insane. And not to mention the hospital run! You deserve a Golden Pipe for this run! :D
This be a TAS, or tool assisted Speedrun. They're usually perfect runs, owing to the creator having the ability to go through it frame by frame to put in just the right inputs(often allowing them to manipulate the RNG substantially)
"Without any jumpscares!"
*Jumpscare happens*
Me: Except for that one
"Except for that one"
Me: *laughing*
exactly the same for me lol
Reddit moment
Harry is a fast valve-twister. I respect that.
So many of my favorite channels uploading awesome work today, I love thorough breakdowns of TAS stuff and for how much work goes into them they deserve spotlights like this more often!
Love that ending lol, I was 15 seconds off on my guess at the time
A true TAS wouldn’t have lost his daughter in the first place smh
Man THIS is the game we need a REMAKE OF! IT WOULD BE AMAZING!
Fuck we are all screwed, a RUclips comment I agree with
Not a Silent Hill remake, but the leaker who knew about God of War: Ragnarok before it was announced said Hideo Kojima and Konami came to an agreement and Silent Hills is being recontinued. Not confirmed of course, but the leaker was spot on before.
*cries in Silent Hill HD Collection*
Every old game. There's always a comment:
" wE nEeD a ReMAke oF tHIS!!11 "
And always, we say:
No, we don't.
Do you want modern gaming companies to fuck it sideways seven moons to Mars?
No you don't. Just play the old game and stop asking modern gaming companies to rape your games.
Imagine,
" DLC AREA, CHERYL'S SECRET EXISTENCE ONLY 5.99$! PLAY AS OLD HARRY MASON " _i'm ooold! Cheeryyl! " ONLY 9.99$ ! WHAT A BARGAIN! "
No, thank, you.
@@Zeithri Dude it's not gonna ruin the game. If the remake is bad just continue playing the old game.
It's absurd that it's essentially impossible to play this classic legally anymore.
What do you mean?
I own an origional cd but idk or think that's what you mean
@@Project-gr6zy they don't produce the original game anymore. The only 2 ways I know to play legally are too but a ps3 play it on there, or buy and original dvd and ps1.
@@busybird7149 I was pretty dissapointed they didn't allow it on the ps4, my disc works but if you find the drill it stops, it does have some scratches so it is in my case I just play my emulator
i bought the cd of it back in probably 2006, it was going for $30 on ebay... now it's more than doubled for that.
After revisiting this video, I would definitely be up for a similar video on Silent Hill 2 for this year's spooky season.
I've been following you're content ever since that "what's 9 + 10" Jak 3 speedrun, and gotta say, you always deliver on quality.
just a small thing about your comment at 10:28 the game says when you examine the acid that it is "concentrated hydrochloric acid." considering the medallion is made of Gold, based on the name of the item, hydrochloric acid by itself doesn't have enough strength to corrode Gold. Aqua regia, a combination of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, can, however. its one of the only (if not the only) acid that can melt gold and platinum
Yes always a good night when tharixer blesses the feed with a video
Always loved watching Punchy's runs of this game at GDQ.
Never knew about you before this video. I had to sub. Thanks for the informal video on one of the best games ever made.
Thank you!
I cried the first time I played the demo since it was my first encounter with a horror game. My sister told me it was hecka fun so my first impression was "why is it foggy? What's that red stuff on the floor?" then cried when the gray kids stabbed me. Then I got hooked on horror games thereafter. Mom would read the walkthrough book, sister had good memory to remind me where rooms were and I was the player. Great times
god bless brah those memories of gaming with the family are to be cherished. much love.
@source *God
God bless you, bro 🙏🏻
I sometimes like watching tool assisted speedruns. I respect the dedication to normal speedruns more but there is something about the flawless perfection of TAS that is just interesting to watch every so often. Your commentary added so much more to it, I look forwards to watching your next Halloween Silent Hill 2 video.
"Let's all pray that RUclips doesn't age-restrict my video after that puzzle" got a good chuckle out of me.
10:28 Gold requires a specific compound called Aqua Regia to be melted, in the game only hydrochloric acid (same stuff as in your stomach) is poured on it, having no tangible effect on the medallion
19:44 I had to look this up, I didn't believe you! The movie has ash in it, but in this game it's snow. Super cool info, earned my subscription.
I've become obsessed with your style of commentary! I am not familiar with speed running at all, but the way you present the topic, the people who play the games, it's all so interesting and fun at the same time, I love it!! I get so relaxed watching your videos, and I really do look forward to the next uploads!!
I love how you talk about how Silent Hill doesn't rely on jumpscares in the locker room. Great commentary.
32:27 that's kind of spooky and uncomfortable. Seeing the character becoming so small and insignificant, surrounded by darkness. It will be interesting if some horror games implement this in one of their sections.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
Such an awesome TAS, gotta come back and say thank you for making this for Halloween!
This is genuinely one of the best and most digestible ways to enjoy SH1 in video form. If i wanted to show a friend why I love silent hill, for the art, sound and atmosphere this video does it in the best way possible. Pauses in commentary show off the sound, and the gameplay and commentary speaks for itself. If you don't want to try this game after a few minutes of watching this video I don't know how
"Tool-Assisted" is an understatement.
Hey man, this was a fantastic video! It's my first video of yours, and your comment timing and explanations are on point! It was fun to hear about the skips and optimizations done for the run. I'm glad I have a new great channel available for me to watch, will check out your other uploads! Cheers and hope you stay healthy!
Thank you so much for the nice comment, hope you enjoy my other videos!
You know it's gonna be good when it's a 50 minute ThaRixer video
exactly
Silent Hill 1 is a weirdly cozy game to me. Something about the fog, the snow, the PS1 graphics, the weird momentum of the game, I find it such a nice game to curlp up in a blanket and enjoy a warm beverage with.
That was FANTASTIC! You should totally make a video like this about SH2!
Seeing you upload an almost hour long video made my day, and boy oh boy what a great video!
Filling up the few parts where nothing was happening with your experiences with the game and easter eggs was such a good idea. It made the pacing of the video the best it could have been!
I also loved the part where you showed the map from a top down view.
You never disappoint Ricky. You always manage to strike the perfect balance between interesting, entertaining and funny. I'd love to see more videos like these in the future, as well as your classic ones, of course. They are all nothing but great!
Also, congrats for guessing the TAS time, that was sick!!
Great watch. Would love more of these videos.
Watching this is interesting because I always thought of survival horror movement like driving a car, and the TAS very much proves that
Regarding the hand gripping the gold medallion: while aqua regia (hydrochloric + nitric acid) does melt gold easily, that bottle (as stated in its description) contains hydrochloric acid alone, which would not harm gold in any way, so it is actually scientifically accurate. Loved this detail when i replayed SH as an adult.
Kaufmann just tells you it's snow when you first meet him
Luved it Ricky. Tomatoanus better watch his back.
19:50 Also Kaufman straight up says "it's snowing".
Amazing work. I've never seen a run being commentated like this and it works so well. Usually speedrun commentaries are constant talking but this one actually focuses on the run and only explains important parts.
Outstanding video. Narration, editing and production quality is on job. I can't wait for more content, cheers !
this was one of my first ps1 games as a kid, can't remember how I got my hands on it so early.
thankfully the obtuse puzzles and whatnot kept me from going too far into the game
TAS are a big favourite of mine, like a scientific research into the limits of a videogame.
Bruh
This video is great, why was this not recommended to me sooner!
More please!
This was pretty fun to watch, and somewhat... Relaxing. I've never played silent hill and though I was getting anxiety from the gameplay, your voice kept soothing me, lol. You're a good gamer and speaker, a rare duo.
came for the tas stayed for the vibes
Great video and commentary, I was glued the whole time.
That song in the beginning sent me into a mind fuck cuz I knew I heard it somewhere else. It’s sampled in a song by The Submarines “1940”
Yes! Cover Silent Hill 2, TOO! :)
i like how the speedrunners involved in this has a creepy image for pfp, not dissapointed
Great video please do more explanatory videos
Great vid! Isn't overly technical nor boring while still explaining a lot
This is pretty much how I got into these types of videos. I was getting an oil change and this got recommended and I just remember being amazed at the concept. Now I know speedruns for too many games and watch 3 hour docs on ledge clipping lol
I first played this game only a few months ago. That school was one of the scariest levels in any video game ever. I made it worse for myself though by missing the map on the way in, so I was running blind the whole time.
I did that in the hospital! Ended up drawing my own map in my sketchbook. It made it a lot scarier
@@Eebers fuck dude the transition to the other world in the hospital fucked me up. I remember thinking I was lost, having explored every floor, and then I get in the elevator and there’s a new button that wasn’t there before. Holy guacamole that freaked me out for some reason, I had no idea what pressing that button was going to do to me.
This one 60fps Part when burning the vines always bothored me 😂
How did I ever beat this in my youth
You didn't. You just think you did.
This channel deserve more subs. Hilarious speed run!
Great video and amazing take on the run !:
At first I didn’t think I’d stay an hour watching this but I did. Pretty good! I hope SH2 is on the way
They have now released one for Silent Hill 2
@@RudraakshSurongSharma I watched it! I’m a bit more experienced with SH2 speedruns so I really enjoyed it
I looovee this video and the commentary was spectacular
Man how the heck did you make 54 minutes feel like 10. very fun to watch.
47:25 The Feels...
I remember playing it few years ago, the music that plays during walk between hospital and antique shop caused me a headache. Good thing it only plays in that one segment.
Man, I can't stop watching this video, it's so entertaining!
Amazing vid. Speedrun watched it all.
These WR history videos are the best shit. I love to watch these videos! Keep it up my man!
You already know that a lot effort has been put into this when the maker of the video spent hours between research and playing the game again for himself.
For sure! We already knew a lot of effort was put into the video after we learned a lot of effort was put into the video, I agree
What a gem of a video! Excellent commentary, both very entertaining and informative. I'll eagerly wait for Silent Hill 2 next year if it really happens!
Theres no tas for sh2 yet so if one doesn't get made I reckon we'll just take a look at the current world record of the game when the time comes ❤
Your commentary was interesting and clever. Good mix of explanation and humor. Nice work!
Analog allows for voltage variance, hence why the cursor is allowed to move faster. Its speed is capped on the digital D pad.
Exactly. D Pad is just 1/0 input, either you're moving or you're not, at the speed the D pad is set to. Thanks for pointing this out.
I just beat this again for the first time in years, love this tas
bruh i watched all ur videos but the silen hill i didnt se all of 2 videos now im watching and enjojing
Nostalgia hits me much. I remember when I was in elementary school and playing SH 1at age 12. The school location was nerve-wracking, and puzzle with piano was serious obstacle for me.
I was using school computer to find solution since English is not my first language.
I wish I could time travel...
this was fun, good job.
awesome breakdown dude.
This special was a great watch. Would be happy to see the follow up
I have a suggestion as to why the Analog Stick is quicker than the D-Pad in the Arrow Puzzel things:
The Analog Stick didn't exist when the game was first released. PS1 Controllers didn't have any Analog Sticks and I feel like the hardware changes that came with the Analog Sticks probably made a difference with how these things were handled by the hardware itself rather than the software.
Analog controllers came in 98 but maybe you are right
@@shovelest6861 i am fairly certain they weren't on the original PS1 controllers. I know that because I still own 2 of them from when my dad bought the PSone ages ago.
Man that ps1 intro sparks up fkin nostalgia like mad
that ps1 boot up sound tho... it's like... asmr...
You are on an easy way to 300k + subs friend keep up the great job.
Me: never played Silent Hill in my life
Also me: watches entire video
